Plant of the Day
Thursday 6 March 2025
Originally found in a church yard in Oxfordshire by Alan Street, Galanthus nivalis f. pleniflorus 'Blewbury Tart' (snowdrop) has a very distinctive appearance. The double flowers face upwards producing a display of dark green rosettes surrounded by narrow outer segments.

Ok might have to have a rethink about hydrangeas. This “Eclipse” variety is one dramatic goth plant.

June 2
The dreaded, beloved shade garden. I've just been throwing things in it the last couple of years, and it's survival of the fittest.
5 hostas (some are camouflaged in the grass like lion cubs on the savannah 🤣 they're shy and sense a threat, sorry) and a naked lady are the returners. New to the roster is the hydrangea (Third. Fecking. Attempt. with these things), the begonias, and the moonflower. May the odds be ever in their favor.

Plant of the Day
Monday 24 February 2025
At Edinburgh Botanic Garden, Scotland, a group of Eranthis hyemalis (winter aconite, winter wolf's bane) were flowering in late winter. This small perennial has a cup-shaped yellow flower, surrounded by divided leafy bracts. The basal leaves are divided into several lobes. This plant is ideal for planting under deciduous trees and shrubs.

The new front garden concept. Since it's so shady I wanted something that feels cool and lush, with lots of native plants but a sort of slightly moody cottage vibe.
Got some affordable little hostas today that are just big enough to divide right now, but which will be great big old silver-blue beasts you see above eventually. Got the clematis for $4 last fall and it survived. Got 4 blueberry bushes from a friend who dug them up from his parent's rural woodland.
I have been hunting down the rose for a YEAR and it's finally coming Tuesday.
I'm hoping to organize them in a slightly formal, Victorian manner, because I think natural, lush plants done up with rhythm and pattern is the whole vibe.
Plant list:
Ostrich fern (hoping to get some freebies from neighbors)
Northern Exposure Silver Leaf Heuchera
Boneset
Little Bluestem grass
Souvenir du Dr Jamain rose
Mammoth Blue hosta
Heart leaf aster
Swamp milkweed
Honeyberry (Hacksap berry)
Wild lowbush blueberry
Honeymoon helliborus
Virgin's Bower native clemetis

Three years ago, I planted a bare root of Virginia bluebells (Mertensia virginica) at my parents’ house in their shade garden. They were not interested in it, it never leafed out, and I figured it hadn’t made it. Today, on the very first day that my first ever nibling was born, my dad texted me the above picture. It had never even put out leaves before, I think it might be growing well because this is the first year I’ve convinced my dad to just leave the leaves in place and not disturb the beds. It’s just one stem and another further back but I feel very happy, I’m sure it will spread into a drift.

🌻🌿 Make your garden pop with vibrant marigolds! But, did you know that not all marigold varieties can thrive in shady areas?
If you're planting in an area with less than six hours of sun, make sure to choose a shade-tolerant variety for the best results. 🌞
Let us help you pick the right one! 🌼
