On this day in 1906, the Fairmont Coal Company mine in Monongah, West Virginia, exploded, killing all but five of the 367 miners inside. The disaster left over 1000 mostly Italian children in the town fatherless and would inspire the first Father's Day in the U.S. the next year.

Van Gogh and Revival: A few events in the history of Christianity in the Mons, Borinage region of Belgium
I'm fortunate to live in another fascinating place where God has been at work. Please take a few minutes to read about how the Holy Spirit has moved here in Mons, Belgium.
I move house a lot, which is partly why this blog is called ‘Dislocated’. My husband and I have lived in nineteen houses over the past 25 years, and right now, we find ourselves in the southern part of Belgium. The area has a bloody history; within walking distance of our house is a plaque that marks the spot where the first shots were fired in World War I. Tragically, the memorial was unveiled…

lrb i do think things like hashtags and language should definitely be credited and contextualized, for instance, #sayhername (begun by Kimberlé Crenshaw and her team) is originally about how the police-sanctioned murder of Black women specifically is often glossed over. especially when the idea is about how a group is forgotten in conversations, an idea's origin should be remembered and credited, and prevented from being decontextualized, in conversations that use it.
the post i just reblogged did qualify this, though. and when it comes to entire movements, and the successful methods they use and the lessons they learn, it isn't theft for other movements to be inspired by them or to use those methods for their own causes. no one's situation improves if we keep ideas from each other, but if we share ideas, build on them, and help each other bring them to life, we have more solidarity, understanding, connection, and, ultimately, success.
#to clarify i *am not saying* that a specific phrase like sayhername should be used for other movements#since it has a specific context and purpose#but for instance. protests for freedom in one country inspiring and motivating and lending ideas#to a protest for freedom in another country#is an example of people coming together. not of theft of ideas#like with the hong kong protests and black lives matter in 2020#or with how the irish and the choctaw tribe have supported each other#or how the lgbt+ community and the mineworkers in the uk supported each other when thatcher was in power#(the plot of pride (2014))#all of these events inspire me a lot and i think we can always use more of this solidarity and connection#and of course we do need to be careful when it comes to information sharing#don't give ideas to fascist or otherwise bigoted movements - learn their signs and dogwhistles

STEPS: 56.
SEED: 3162744506.

Don’t mind me, just uhhh, just sharing this.
It’s cheesy alright, and tropey and corny and basic and the melody is simple with a not too complex message and the animations pretty good and some of the lyrics are a little off because they have to fit this into the context of minecraft but god I love this, as well as other stuff mineworks has made. I’m embarrassed to say but when I was younger this fucking touched me. It really just resonates with me, you know? I never lost my sense of wonder and love for the world, and I still think everything, from its animals, and, environments to its people, are beautiful and worth cherishing, and this song starts and ends with such beautiful and wonderful optimism and it just touches me because I grew up running around all kinds of environments and places and it really instilled a deep love for the world in me, and beyond the environmental messaging, I really relate to this song on a personal and spiritual level. And the chorus kicking in about how beautiful the world is, even while our protagonist character is being attacked my monster’s because of their curiosity and sense of adventure, and the song still says it’s a beautiful world, and none of these scary things take away from its beauty, it’s the removal of things that take away its beauty, and we have to add as much into the world as we take, for ourselves and others and it’s beautiful and a story about young naivety and growing and learning but also not abandoning your love and wonder for the world and working to fix it with others, and it just gets me everytime…

PRIDE (2014) dir. Matthew Warchus In 1984, after realizing that they share common foes in Margaret Thatcher, the police and the conservative press, a group of LGBT activists decide to raise money to support the National Union of Mineworkers during their lengthy strike. There is only one problem: the Union seems embarrassed to receive their help. Based on the real life Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners campaign. (link in title)

any time any media describes jacob zuma as a "left wing economic populist" there should be a legally mandated disclaimer describing that his anc govt massacred 40 striking mineworkers and then tried to use the courts to pin their deaths on their comrades as murder until public outcry put an end to the prosecution

On this day, 15 July 1984, the group which became Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) held their first meeting at founding member Mark Ashton's flat on the Heygate Estate in South East London. The meeting was advertised in the newspaper Capital Gay, and called for lesbians and gay men "interested in solidarity work… to set up an organisation" to support a nationwide strike of mineworkers in opposition to a pit closure programme of the Conservative government. The meeting began at 4 PM, and was attended by 11 people. The group would go on to grow significantly around the UK, raise huge amounts of money for the miners, and build lasting links between the working class movement and the LGBT+ community in Britain. Their work ultimately resulted in the official trade union movement, and subsequently Labour Party policy, declaring their support for gay rights, and the London Pride parade in 1985 was headed by a column of miners. 19th century IWW organizer: look mineworkers, if you organize and picket outside this silver mine you can get some better working conditions and fair pay
19th century factchecker: 5 pinocchios rated FALSE, that would be illegal and the mine owner would not be obliged to improve your pay if you break the law.

West Virginia miners, for various reasons, were slower to unionize than their counterparts in other states. This was true not only in comparison with northern Appalachian miners in the states of Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, and Indiana (labeled the Central Competitive Field), but also in comparison with those in Alabama and other parts of southern Appalachia. They gave only partial support at best to national strikes in 1894, 1897, and 1902–1903. However, as many analysts have noted, they were eventually to become the most fervent of union supporters. There were several interrelated reasons for these two characteristics. First, a larger percentage of West Virginia miners in the early 1930s lived in small, isolated towns (93% in towns with fewer than twenty-five hundred residents) and in company housing (75%) than in other coal mining states. Second, fear of the union led coal miner associations to hire hundreds of Baldwin-Felts guards and "detectives," so that by 1910, there was not a coal town in West Virginia in which they were not stationed. Whereas in earlier periods, union organizers moved around relatively freely in West Virginia, by this time not only union organizers but sympathetic miners were commonly harassed, brutalized, and murdered.
The growing militancy and solidarity of West Virginia miners was on full display when, in April 1912, Paint Creek and Cabin Creek miners struck. It was objective conditions (unsafe work, cheating on pay, company control, and sheer brutality), not southern or mountaineer culture, that led them to become a model of solidarity (a class solidarity so paradigmatic that it stimulated IWW (Industrial Workers of the World or Wobblies) songwriter Ralph Chapin to write the union anthem "Solidarity Forever". The mine owners were determined to crush the 1912 strike with force. Baldwin-Felts guards "built iron and concrete forts that they equipped with machine guns throughout the strike districts," evicting miners from company housing and destroying their furniture. They then began to murder striking miners singly and in groups. In the most celebrated instance, they drove an armored train, dubbed the "Bull Moose Special," through the mining districts, machine-gunning strikers and their families in tent colonies near the tracks. The miners, to be sure, fought back in kind, shooting mine guards and detectives with six machine guns and one thousand high-powered rifles supplied by the national union. Women in the company towns were equally combative, engaging in gun battles alongside the men. It was women who prevented the "Bull Moose Special" from returning by tearing up the railroad tracks and who often attacked strikebreakers, driving them away. According to Wobbly Ralph Chapin, this was the appeal of famed United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) organizer Mother Jones, "who might have been any coal miner’s wife ablaze with righteous fury". Mineworker families not only fought, but in the tent colonies sang and danced, creating a new union solidarity culture, making the union "an intense, emotional unity".
The Paint Creek/Cabin Creek strike lasted a year and was never broken, despite the declaration of martial law and the arrest and jailing, without trial, of hundreds of miners, while the mine operator and gunmen who drove the "Bull Moose Special" were never even questioned, much less indicted. Rank-and-file coal miners and their local leaders rejected a settlement brokered by district officials, UMWA national president John White, and Governor Henry Hatfield, continuing to strike until all their demands were met. They then demanded the replacement of all their district leaders, finally forcing the national union to call elections.

Oh my god Pride(2014) is sooo good. Queer activists in solidarity with Welsh mineworkers during Miners' Strike… Like how was Michael Sheen not in that film?
I’m so convinced he would have been in that if he wasn’t playing the lead in a high budget and all consuming American tv show at the time

Margaret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness Thatcher
LG, OM, DStJ, PC, FRS, HonFRSC (née Roberts; 13 October 1925 – 8 April 2013) was a British stateswoman and Conservative politician who was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990 and Leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990. She was the longest-serving British prime minister of the 20th century and the first woman to hold the position. As prime minister, she implemented economic policies known as Thatcherism. A Soviet journalist dubbed her the "Iron Lady", a nickname that became associated with her uncompromising politics and leadership style.
Thatcher studied chemistry at Somerville College, Oxford, and worked briefly as a research chemist before becoming a barrister. She was elected Member of Parliament for Finchley in 1959. Edward Heath appointed her secretary of state for education and science in his 1970–1974 government. In 1975, she defeated Heath in the Conservative Party leadership election to become leader of the opposition, the first woman to lead a major political party in the UK.
On becoming prime minister after winning the 1979 general election, Thatcher introduced a series of economic policies intended to reverse high inflation and Britain's struggles in the wake of the Winter of Discontent and an oncoming recession. Her political philosophy and economic policies emphasised greater individual liberty, the privatisation of state-owned companies, and reducing the power and influence of trade unions. Her popularity in her first years in office waned amid recession and rising unemployment. Victory in the 1982 Falklands War and the recovering economy brought a resurgence of support, resulting in her landslide re-election in 1983. She survived an assassination attempt by the Provisional IRA in the 1984 Brighton hotel bombing and achieved a political victory against the National Union of Mineworkers in the 1984–85 miners' strike. In 1986, Thatcher oversaw the deregulation of UK financial markets, leading to an economic boom, in what came to be known as the Big Bang.
Thatcher was re-elected for a third term with another landslide in 1987, but her subsequent support for the Community Charge (also known as the "poll tax") was widely unpopular, and her increasingly Eurosceptic views on the European Community were not shared by others in her cabinet. She resigned as prime minister and party leader in 1990, after a challenge was launched to her leadership, and was succeeded by John Major, her chancellor of the Exchequer. After retiring from the Commons in 1992, she was given a life peerage as Baroness Thatcher (of Kesteven in the County of Lincolnshire) which entitled her to sit in the House of Lords. In 2013, she died of a stroke at the Ritz Hotel, London, at the age of 87.
A polarising figure in British politics, Thatcher is nonetheless viewed favourably in historical rankings and public opinion of British prime ministers. Her tenure constituted a realignment towards neoliberal policies in Britain; the complex legacy attributed to this shift continues to be debated into the 21st century.
Reputation
Thatcher's tenure of 11 years and 209 days as British prime minister was the longest since Lord Salisbury in the late 19th century (13 years and 252 days, in three spells) and the longest continuous period in office since Lord Liverpool in the early 19th century (14 years and 305 days).
Having led the Conservative Party to victory in three consecutive general elections, twice in a landslide, she ranks among the most popular party leaders in British history regarding votes cast for the winning party; over 40 million ballots were cast in total for the party under her leadership. Her electoral successes were dubbed a "historic hat trick" by the British press in 1987.
Thatcher ranked highest among living persons in the 2002 BBC poll 100 Greatest Britons. In 1999, Time deemed Thatcher one of the 100 most important people of the 20th century. In 2015 she topped a poll by Scottish Widows, a major financial services company, as the most influential woman of the past 200 years; and in 2016 topped BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour Power List of women judged to have had the biggest impact on female lives over the past 70 years. In 2020, Time magazine included Thatcher's name on its list of 100 Women of the Year. She was chosen as the Woman of the Year in 1982 when the Falklands War began under her command, resulting in the British victory.
In contrast to her relatively poor average approval rating as prime minister, Thatcher has since ranked highly in retrospective opinion polling and, according to YouGov, is "see[n] in overall positive terms" by the British public. Just after her death in 2013, according to a poll by The Guardian, about half of the public viewed her positively while one third viewed her negatively. In a 2019 opinion poll by YouGov, most Britons rated her as Britain's greatest post-war leader (with Churchill coming second). According to the poll, more than four in ten Britons (44%) think that Thatcher was a "good" or "great" prime minister, compared to 29% who think she was a "poor" or "terrible" one. She was voted the fourth-greatest British prime minister of the 20th century in a 2011 poll of 139 academics organised by MORI. In a 2016 University of Leeds survey of 82 academics specialising in post-1945 British history and politics, she was voted the second-greatest British prime minister after the Second World War.

____________________________________________________________________________
You had been walking for hours without rest. You couldn't allow yourself to stop. Not yet. The fear, you felt when he looked at you with these cold and passionate eyes, was still present. The way he showed up at your parents house, convincing them, that going with him was the best chance you would ever get in life, made you furious and afraid at the same time. It had been easy for him to find out, where you and your family lived, even if you only met a couple brief times - and that scared you. That meant, that ether, he had been watching you without you noticing or that his minions did. You didn't know which thought was more disturbing.
The sun was slowly setting and the first stars showed themself. You start to wonder, if you will get any sleep this night. The past days had been rough. After your escape from his residence, you had magically survived the freezing cold of snezhnaya and had made it to the docks, continuing your trip by ship. You had arrived at Liyue Harbour, aiming to get to Sumeru as fast as possible, seeking help of a friend, that you had met during your stay at the academia. Hopefully your friend Cyno could provide some protection or, if fate was on your side, a new identity with his position as general mahamatra. You were currently on your way to the chasm, the only way you knew of. Even tho the salesman hadn't been very specific, he mentioned a small pass, leading through the mines. Hilichurls had attacked your last choosen camp and had followed you for the next few days, which is why you were exhausted and at the brim of falling asleep while walking. It had become dark by now and you saw the lights of the mineworkers camps. You had been warned about some recend activity of the Fatui in this area and you knew, that you couldn't ask the workers for help without risking their safety.
You decided to rest near the entrance to the chasm, hidden within a nearby forest. It would be safer to explore and pass through the area by daylight. You needed to sleep as you had stayed awake for the last two nights. But sleep didn't reach you easy. Your fear to be cought by him or his minions was to great. Tartaglia hadn't notice your escape immediatly after you left, but began his search first thing the next day, trying to find you via missing-posters. It had made your arrival at the docks pretty hard and fearsome.
The next morning you woke up with the feeling of being watched. It made you feel uneasy. You knew, you had been spotted. You packed the little of things, you managed to take with you, as fast as you could, almost fleeing towards the entry to the chasm as fear struck you. He had found you, you were sure of it. You tried to calm yourself. Panicking wouldn't be of any use. Panic made people slopy and frantic, thus more likely to fail. You tried to confuse your stalker by taking turns while passing the chasm until you finally reached the tunnel, that lead to the nation of Sumeru. By then you thought you had lost the unwelcome follower. You entered the dark tunnel, which was occasionaly enlighted by lamps, that were left by the workers. You felt hope flowing through every muscle and bone. While the academia didn't wait at the other side yet, you knew that a friend of Cyno was living nearby.
As you saw the light of the end of the tunnel, you heard a noise of something breaking behind you. Panic filled you and you started running. You didn't need to look back, to know who caused the noise. You heard him cursing quietly. You needed to reach the trees, in order to have chance to hide. Due to the nearby exit, it didn't take long until you saw the first gigantic trees. You quickly jumped behind the big roots and ran as fast as you could in the direction of the nearby village, hiding behind the trees and roots.
"Oh come on, my love", Tartaglia shouted. "There is no reason to keep hiding, although this game has been fun." You could practically hear his grin. "This game is over, my love. Let's return home", he continued to shout, without knowing, where exactly you hid. You decided, that the game was over, when he cought you in his arms. 'Home', wasn't anywhere near, where he wanted you to be. The place he wanted to return to wasn't your home anymore. Not at your parents, who ignored the fact, that you had already been in a happy relationship, when they practically sold you to the 11th Harbinger, and not at his residence. When he took you with him, he threatend to unalive your partner, if you wouldn't come with him. But that wasn't the reason, why you left. You wanted freedom, the one thing Tartaglia coudn't grant you.
You finally stood at the step that lead to the village, when you suddenly felt his strong arms wrapping around your waist and his head lovingly resting on your head. "Found you", he wispered relieved. Your body stiffened in shock. You felt like you couldn't breath. Your hope vanished.
Suddenly you felt rage filling you and you tried to fight his firm grip. He sighed exhausted, took something out of his pocket and seemingly drank it. Afterwards he turned you around an kissed you passionatly, allowing the substance to flow into your mouth. You tried to resist the urge to swallow, but he held you head high until you were forced to drink it. Suprisingly you didn't pass out - you expected that much - but insted felt weirdly light, no longer able to fight. "Even though I really enjoyed this little adventure, I don't understand, why you ran away. I gave you everything a person could ever wish for.", he wispered while nestling his nose in the crook of your neck as he held you firmly against his broad chest, not allowing you to fall to the ground. He didn't sound like he was accusing you. It sounded like he was genuinely trying to find out, what he could change, to make your life with him more comfortable. Even if you were barely by yourself, you tried to answer him, unable to filter your words, to prevend him from getting angry. " You see,", you start slowly, "I wanted the world and you gave me the sun."
