After the safehouse, Pete goes back to underwater restraints training. It hits differently. commentary: pete just wants to feel that haze of nothingness, drift away. but chan and porsche won't let him -- and they've got conflicting interests. this fic is secretly a bit of a study of all three of them, and it doesn't pull its punches.

I got tagged by @sitp-recs and @wolfpants, thank you, loves! 2024 was not great for me: I got a new job which means much less time for fandom. I read less, created less, had to stop QQR halfway through the year, didn't make any reclists. I wish to change that in the new year and make more time for what brings me joy despite being busy IRL. On a more positive note, I got closer with fandom friends and made new ones. I feel like I have a space here and that makes me very happy. I made art and wrote (at least) microfics. I co-modded two excellent fests. That's not nothing; so with that in mind - happy new year everyone. May it bring you everyhting you wish for.

so in my reclists for @spnficrecfest i haven't been including many fics that are very "big destiel."

this is partly because i've been trying to keep the kudos count lower (though obviously this hasn't been absolute), and also because i actively did not include any "post empty destiel fix it" type fics in the dabb era reclist because they're kind of a genre unto themselves. nor have i intentionally made space in other reclists for fics that have a particular destiel romance novel vibe. obviously there's some, but those tend to dominate reclists, and i wanted to highlight smaller fics.

so this is my "big destiel" reclist, except i still did not include anything that had >2k kudos, because those are generally speaking pretty well known already.

a mark of cain fic with chefkiss angel stuff. a recent favorite of mine. really put this author on the map for me.

(these are all rated gen or teen unless otherwise stated. most of these contain ships, but they all provide good insight into owen as a person)

I saw you mention sickfic in your tags - might I suggest Tea and Sympathy by osprey_archer? Unless that's the one you read. It's Owen/Ianto, and it's a bit weird and cracky, but Owen's cute and frumpy in it. The author marked the fic as t-rated, but Chapter 4 is mature, jsyk.

5 Kisses Owen Doesn’t Talk About by pocketmouse - Owen/Team... This fic's a really beautiful exploration of his relationships with everybody. The Suzie, Ianto, and Tosh sections are romantic - the Jack and Gwen ones are platonic (and fantastically sweet). The Jack one's a particular favorite of mine, because lord knows those two are never that sweet in canon. The fic's mostly t-rated, I'd say, though the Ianto section's a bit spicy.

Three Times Owen, Tosh, and Ianto Slept Together, and One Time They Were Caught At It by Sholio - despite the title, this one's pretty tame (when it says they get caught, it's them all cuddling - oop, spoilers). This is, in fact, one of the cutest fics I've had the pleasure of reading in the fandom. The whole final part of it is so precious it's not even funny, and it's one of my favorite scenes in any fic ever.

with a bit of a mind flip by ariya167 - a gen bodyswap fic! Owen and Gwen, this time. It's really IC, you can hear all the voices. It's got a cozy vibe to it to me, for some reason - I think because Owen in it reminds me a lot of his Big Finish self, like how he is in the Owen & Andy audios, and that Owen has a specific vibe to me. Anyway, I like it a lot.

There Is Nothing Here Worth Saving by heddychaa - a lot of people have tried their hand at fics about Owen's childhood and his mother. I haven't read too many of them, because I don't have the strength, but this is a good one. Mind the warnings the author included.

I'm a big Owen/Ianto shipper and I've read just about every fic in existence of those two, so I hope you don't mind, I have a few recs for them as well. None are overly shippy, they're just sort of explorations of Owen and Ianto as people and in relation to each other, with an emphasis on Owen.

For starters - Clinging To The Wreckage Until I Got The Message by paperclipbitch. I adore this fic, and I adore this author (who has much more fic on LJ; I highly recommend all of their work). It only really gets romantic at the end, too; it's mostly just Ianto taking care of a self-destructing Owen, and them learning to understand each other by the end.

Experiments In A Minor by paperclipbitch. Another really fantastic one - Owen being self destructive again. Very lightly O/I; mostly friendship. They provide drunken insight on how fucked up they both are. It's brilliant.

A Trip, a Punch, and Willing by ThisBeautifulDrowning - there's not an author's note on the ao3 posting, but I also found this fic on LJ and the author said the prompt was simply 'Owen + flirting'. This is a Owen/Ianto fic that kind of touches on Owen's compulsive need to flirt, and it's done really well. It's also sort of The Last Beacon written at least five years before TLB was even released - they end up in the countryside again and share a hotel room. There's also a pillow fight. It's fun. I love this one a lot. Also, the M rating is unnecessary imo - I'd say it's a T. Probably only marked as M 'cause of Owen's potty mouth. Okay, that's the last of my O/I recs, I swear.

But He'll Get Me by paperclipbitch - I did say they were my favorite author. This fic is tagged as Jack/Owen, but it's extremely light (like, one line at the end, and even then it doesn't have to be read as romantic honestly). It's an exploration of if Jack had actually retconned Owen after End of Days, and the two of them air out some things out. Really good stuff.

Teething Problems by paperclipbitch - last one, I swear. This one's gen, and was written between s1 and s2 when everyone thought Owen would take over as leader.

Ceaseless by pocketmouse is a great study of how Torchwood further fucked Owen up. This author's one of my favorite TW writers, they really Understood him.

JeSuisGourde writes a lot of Owen-focused one-shots and drabbles.

Sholio also writes a lot of hefty-sized team-focused fics, with an emphasis on Owen.

Pity the Freak by emmy_award — this is my all-time favorite steddie fic and i don’t see anything topping it anytime soon so it probably will be forever. i’m always so surprised i never see anyone else talking about it! i came out of this one Changed. i maxed out the text field with my comment which i didn’t think was realistically even possible. this is a must-read and if me saying this convinces even just one person to read this fic then i’ve won

kissing the beehive by slowmoon — one of my best friends, tiff, wrote this in the summer and fall of 2022. they’re one of the most talented writers i know — it was a huge privilege to work on this with them and i had a really fun time editing it. if you like vampire!eddie this one is right up your alley :-)

keep with me forward by shortcrust — this has been a favorite for a long time — it’s simple and sweet and incredibly well-written. a few of the lines were so moving that i still think about them regularly. beautiful!

Calamity’s Child by glorious_spoon — something i value probably more than anything else in a fic is good jokes and this one’s chock full of ‘em. this is like tears in your eyes level funny. i think about “okay, nancy reagan” basically every single day. i too am a massive fan of outsider POVs and this one captures dustin’s voice perfectly

Three Days on the Red Planet by CaptainHoney — as a lover of the sci-fi genre i’ll read any sci-fi au you throw at me. in this case i am throwing this one at y’all. the concept and the setting for this fic are super interesting and well-executed and i could have read hundreds of thousands of words of this. delicious

He Knows Only Two Stories by teddywesworl — you know those fics where eddie is just like…slightly off? like there’s something weird about him. (think Looks like we’re in for nasty weather by prufrocks or Heal Your Shrinking Soul by how_about_no, or maybe even The Train Fic by novemberthorne) this is one of those and it’s soooo good. i only recently realized i’m very much drawn to There’s Something Wrong With Eddie as a genre but this is the best of ‘em, i’d say. and obviously you can never go wrong with farmer!steve. i’ve never read a fic i didn’t love from this author and this one is no exception!

The Storm Series

Top Gun, Iceman/Maverick, E

Eight years after Maverick and Iceman meet at TOPGUN, Maverick is running the program and Iceman is badly injured in combat, which finds him sent back to Miramar to teach until he's fit to fly again. Things move pretty fast after that.

I'm proud of many things about Storm. It was my first major work for Top Gun, and I'm really happy with the characterization. The way the characters and their relationship evolve through the series—I'm proud of that, and I'm proud that I was able to pick up the series after eight years and write two more installments that belong in the universe with the first two. Despite all the ways I had changed as a person and a writer in the time between, I was able to slip back into it like an old coat, and that is something you strive for as an author.

Dreams of Impact

Top Gun, Iceman/Maverick, M

Maverick's trip in Darkstar takes him further than he ever imagined possible.

When I was a baby writer, I wrote a lot of really long stories. For several years, I worked with another writer on a collaboration that surpassed 200k words, and we never finished it. That was by far my longest work, but many of my stories pre-2010 are 10k, 20k, 50k.

Now it's rare that I write something that long. Part of that is that I learned how to say a lot without that many words. Pithy was a word I heard constantly in grad school, and I needed to learn how to do that. I have, and I'm a much better writer for it. I'm proud of that.

There are a lot of other reasons that I don't write long, multi-chapter epics anymore, everything from writing professionally to my health, and to be honest, sometimes I miss it. Dreams of Impact offered me a wonderful opportunity to get back to that kind of writing. I enjoyed writing the story very much, and I'm proud of how it turned out. The longer, more-plot heavy story muscles had not been flexed in a while, but I guess I still got it.

Magic leaves a trace, and part of the curse stayed in her blood, and Sorsha never forgot what it was like to be the wolf. Even after her mother transformed her back, the wolf lived still, tucked behind her breast.

I love magical realism, and I love making things into fairytales, and I love finding ways to fit discordant things together so they seem completely natural. I did all of those things very well in this story. It was also a gift for a dear friend who is also an excellent writer, and she absolutely lost her gotdam mind when she read it, and I am proud of that.

This story is a standalone piece, but it was also—for me—an exercise (an exploration, maybe) in two very specific things. (It doesn't matter what. What does matter is: Not long after I had posted this, I talked to a couple people—dear friends but also writers I respect—about it once they'd read it, and they both told me how well I had done those two things, even though I hadn't mentioned them anywhere. I'm proud of that. It's extremely gratifying to know you can hit a target even if it's a target no one else can see.)

The BEST gabenath fanfic of all time and I will defend it until the very end щ(゜ロ゜щ) It never fails to make me tear up, and I could read it over and over without getting tired of it, I am constantly hooked at everything that happened in here and more. It's very hard-hitting and emotional and digs deep into my chest and I could sing praises of this fic all the time. Rated M.

2. Calamity Dusk by 11JJ11 (@graaythekwami)

The first fanfic I have ever read for gabenath. In fact, I've read this well before I was ever in the gabenath ship. It's such a fresh take on the series and on gabenath in general that I find myself going back to it over and over again just to get that feeling in my system. The action! The drama! The suspense! It's just 😙👌! Rated T.

3. Birth by carolatavs (@carolatvs)

Every so often I say to myself, hmm, I would like to read Birth again. I would like to feel Gabriel's utter confusion again. I would like to see him struggle with Nathalie. I would like to read it and fantasize about hitting him round the head with a baseball bat ( •̀ ω •́ )✧ Rated T.

A late addition to this list since I last made one but this fic nestled deep in my chest and wouldn't let go. It's an episode on its own! There's a good intro, a good setup, and frankly well-executed battle scene, and that ending! That finale! I reread the whole fic just to get sucker-punched by the feels of the final parts. Rated T.

5. The Beginning of Goodbye by dishwater_blondie (@dishwater-blondie)

Yes, it's the whole series. Yes I meant all of them. Why not? This series is gut-wrenching, action-packed, devastating, and cathartic—there were many times in the series where I had to put my phone down to go scream silently and digest it all because it's that good. Rated G-T.
