New article: The Day of the Jackal: Who is Eddie Redmayne?
As he takes on the role of the ultimate assassin, here’s everything you need to know about The Day of the Jackal’s leading man, Eddie Redmayne.
Who is Eddie Redmayne?
Eddie Redmayne, born in 1982, is a British actor born and raised in London, England.
His great-grandfather, Sir Richard Redmayne, was a civil and mining engineer, credited for his work in improving mine safety and for his advocacy of the benefits of a five-day working week on employees, helping make weekends a more standard practice.
Wanting to perform from an early age, he attended Jackie Palmer Stage School from the age of 10 and made his screen debut in an episode of kids TV series Animal Ark in 1998.
He later landed a music scholarship at the esteemed Eton College, attending the same year as Prince William.
Going on to study at Cambridge University, he made his professional debut as an actor at Shakespeare’s Globe in 2003 in a production of Twelfth Night.
From that point on, he established himself as one to watch on the British stage and later pivoted to film, where he took on dramatic roles in films including 2007’s Elizabeth: The Golden Age, The Other Boleyn Girl and The Yellow Handkerchief in 2008, and My Week with Marilyn in 2011.
In 2012, Redmayne grew international acclaim for portraying Marius in Tom Hooper’s Les Miserables, and two years later landed his first Oscar for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in biopic The Theory of Everything.
He continues to act on both stage and screen, earning another Oscar nomination in 2015 for his role of Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl, and leading the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them franchise as Newt Scamander.
The Day of the Jackal is his first major TV role in 12 years.
On stage, he has most recently led revivals of Cabaret in the West End and Broadway, starring as the elusive and mysterious Emcee.
He has been married to wife Hannah Bagshawe since 2014, and together they have two children.
Who does Eddie Redmayne play in The Day of the Jackal?
The Jackal is a notorious assassin who lives a normal double life away from his murderous career path.
A natural chameleon, The Jackal has an innate ability to blend in with a crowd and change his appearance at will, meaning his targets never see him coming.
He is a man who prefers to work alone, considering each of his missions an art form.
Little is known about the character as we’re introduced to him, with his ability to camouflage himself leaving him free to do his work undetected.
The role was portrayed by Edward Fox in the 1973 movie adaptation of the story.
Find out more about the other cast and characters from The Day of the Jackal here.
Where have I seen Eddie Redmayne before?
Eddie Redmayne has become one of the most sought-after British stars in the world, with an enviable list of previous projects.
Here are some of his most notable roles to date:
My Week With Marilyn (2011) - Colin Clark
Based on the memoir of Colin Clark, My Week With Marilyn follows the aspiring filmmaker as he travels to London in 1956 to land a job with the celebrated Laurence Olivier.
Landing a position on The Prince and The Showgirl, Colin finds himself working as an assistant and pseudo-protector of the iconic Marilyn Monroe (played by Michelle Williams), who is having trouble in her personal life and marriage to Arthur Miller.
Across a fateful week, Colin and Marilyn grow closer as the Hollywood star adjusts to England, her current life, and her work with Olivier.
Les Miserables (2012) - Marius Pontmercy
Based on the book by Victor Hugo, Les Miserables is an adaptation of the musical of the same name.
Redmayne plays Marius Pontmercy, a compassionate young man who is a member of the revolutionary group, Friends of the ABC.
He instantly falls in love with Cosette, the adopted daughter of leading man Jean Valjean, upon meeting her.
This causes the heartbreak of his best friend Eponine, who is secretly in love with him.
Devoted to both his cause and his love, Marius is torn on his loyalties as the revolution turns violent and he leads the rebels on the barricades.
The Theory of Everything (2014) - Stephen Hawking
This biographical drama depicts the early life and first marriage of the legendary Stephen Hawking, detailing his work, health, and romantic life.
First meeting Hawking as an astrophysics student at the University of Cambridge, he meets young literature student Jane Wilde and falls in love.
Together, they will navigate the success of his career and his diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive form of motor neurone disease that leads to slurred speech, muscle stiffness, and difficulty breathing.
The incurable and eventually fatal disease would eventually confine Hawking to a wheelchair, where he would communicate via a computer for the rest of his life.
The show is based on the 2007 memoir Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen written by Jane, who married Hawking in 1965.
The Theory of Everything is available now on Sky and NOW.
The Danish Girl (2015) - Lili Elbe
The Danish Girl is a story loosely inspired by the lives of Danish painter Lili Elbe – who became one of the first recorded people to have gender-affirming surgery.
Lili’s story inspired the novel of the same title by David Ebershoff.
Starting the story in the mid-1920s, The Danish Girl tracks the awakening of Lili’s transgender identity.
Married to portrait artist Gerda Wegener (Alicia Vikander), Lili comes out as transgender after posing as a woman for one of her wife’s paintings.
The film tracks the barriers Lili had to face in order to get the surgery, and the support Gerda was throughout the transition.
The Danish Girl is available now on Sky and NOW
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016) - Newt Scamander
An extension of the Harry Potter Wizarding World, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them follows Newt Scamander decades before the original Harry Potter series.
Newt is a ‘magizoologist’ who travels the globe to document the wizarding world’s magical creatures but finds himself in trouble in 1926 New York City when his suitcase gets into the wrong hands, with animals let loose across the human city.
Now he’s on a mission to gather them all or risk exposing the entire wizarding world – but as he does so, he finds himself dealing with growing unrest that could prove a more devastating threat on the world as they know it.
The franchise has since had two more installments: Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald in 2016, and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore in 2018.
The Trial of the Chicago Seven (2020) - Tom Hayden
Based on true events that occurred in 1968, The Trial of the Chicago Seven follows seven men as they are arrested and charged with "crossing state lines" to incite a riot during an anti-Vietnam protest at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
As the trial gets underway, it becomes apparent the judge has a prejudice against them, with ongoing issues, stunts, and uncovering of brutality turning the courtroom into a circus.
The film was widely praised and was even nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture, at the 2021 Academy Awards, as well as three Baftas and five Golden Globes.
The Trial of the Chicago Seven is available to watch on Netflix....
The Day of the Jackal coming 7 November exclusively on Sky Atlantic and NOW.

All very valid reasons for us to not be able to befriend H and L! Simply a curiosity of mine 😌
But now I come off anon to throw my theories into the ring:
T or L is Fox, no particular lean either way.
H is Rabbit, and I swear I have my reasons, which are innumerable and I will not weigh down my comment with them.
E, if they are even a mask, is Butterfly because Butterfly is the only red flag mask that isn't TUG, and I think a mismatch would be even *more* of a red flag.
It was a valid question! I hope I will be able to make Henrietta/Henry and Lucia/Laurence feel fleshed out enough so that the lack of personal relationship the MC can have with them won't leave them feeling too unknown.
Ohh you've really thought these out!

What would they do when they play Minecraft {Gamer Group AU}
———
Kitty
The first to bring it up and offer to play the game together {Java Edition mostly}
Immediately tries to find a cat or a wolf (without anything prepared besides quick food-)
After that, she makes them homes and sets some traps around their town.
The one literally spamming snow golems in a single storage room that is called "a mini snowman town- by Kitty :3"
The lucky to finds so many allays and brings them to the town for everyone(literally has TNT and fire with her to explode the cages lol-)
Likes to summon iron golems too- despite that it's sometimes a waste of iron if the town is so huge to protect,,, So she often places various blocks on the ground to avoid mobs spawning from the ground but at the same times making sure that the road looks ✨photogenic✨
Rosalyn
Super conscious with what surrounds her.
Keeps dying from explosions and creepers-(like she just can't even hear them until she feels like she's getting attacked by something -)
The one who decorates the group's little town with flowers and many trees.
Teaches Akihiko how to make a bonsai, japanese man is now pleased.
Always takes some flowers in the way, wants the town they'll make to be a bit more nature like.
Owns lots of bunnies and snowman thanks to Angel and Kitty's help,,, she just loves them and finds them so neat-
Has the habit of spending her time on making the town's ground look at least plain, no block shall be looking like a hill-/ih
Angel
Big fanatic with making architecture in the game, one would come up to him and ask for help with building something(and they would help him by lending the materials he recommends)
The first to start building a wall surrounding where the group is settling once Laurence and Eiji decided it make a little town for everyone,,, neat.
When mining, he gets super excited when seeing a diamond, emeralds or a lapis.
Silently judges at the villager's fashion sense and the armor design of the game -
Eiji
Freaking takes the main lead in the enchantment table, likes to work a lot with improving everyone's armor and making potions too.
He even created an aesthetic witch cabin for himself-
Angel, Laurence, and Eiji are business partners when it comes to trading building blocks, despite competing who is the best at building.(Angel doesn't take it too seriously tho since he's most focused with improving the town's walls most of the time)
DEFINITELY CREATES A MINI CHINA TOWN AREA-- plus a house for Rosie bc he somehow heard her mutter wanting a Chinese home near a cherry blossom tree in the voice chat before- :DD
When discovering that there's a banboo forest somewhere far when going out of the town, he just right away records the coordinates and start making a "silk train road" from the group town to the forest-(wants to keep pandas close to him somehow-/IH)
Confidently makes a nether portal and makes a safe post for everyone to enter safely without getting attacked by nether mobs(big mvp-)
Laurence
Helps Kitty bring a lot of wolves to the town by rope, and make everyone in the group at least tame 2 dogs for self protection/ih
Came up with the idea to have a city, but Eiji convinced him that despite being like 7 people, they don't have a lot of people to make a city within a short time.
He created the writing news board in the center of the village which helps people requests what they need or announce something important.
Already planning to build a skyscraper before everyone, of course, Eiji and Angel are trying to compete with him with their shrines and palaces-
The ones who mainly leads in the group with the equipment and weapons- teaches beginner Rosie and Akihiko how to use the long range bow and shield for defence purposes. As they can barely even survive with just a diamond sword,,-
There was a time he placed a untamed fox for Rosie and Kitty each as gifts since he heard them mentioning they love foxes. But the biggest oof was that Rosie owns bunnies loose in her house and Kitty has a recently found untamed wolf at that time so it went so bad for Rosalyn's bunnies and Kitty's supposedly new fox :'3 Laurence ended up apologizing to Rosie mostly tho- Kitty doesn't have to know/ih
Akihiko
Likes to prefer stay inside the town, walls keep him safe usually.
Would cook for the group, even make a big storage room filled with food or certain blocks that looks like a konbini(convenience store)
Helps Rosie with cleaning around the town and make the ground look flat for people's future building projects.
Literally makes a little japanese area sect in some part of the town, and the rest of the group would place a sign in front of the japanese bridge entrance that says "Japan Village 02"-
Does a lot of building tricks when making furniture- watches a lot of furniture diys.

Quote
as the tide of 90s social liberalism has ebbed, it has also revealed another group of people (primarily older, white homeowners and pensioners) who had never bought into the consensus in the first place, and are aggressively hostile to its newer, more radical iteration. We all know a member of this demographic: alienated by the modern world and displeased by change, they are fond of complaining that “You can’t say anything any more!” – even as their opinions are widely reproduced in the nation’s print media. Perhaps they spent the 2000s retreating into the Daily Mail columns of Richard Littlejohn and his contemporaries, or simply feeling lost altogether. They are the people that have enabled Brexit and Donald Trump to succeed, and have since transformed themselves into the base of a potent political movement. Having spent so long feeling silenced by the liberal consensus, people in this group have been given a new lease of life by the right’s new insurgents. Not only were they correct all along; they were actually victims, zealously persecuted by an oversensitive and censorious society. It is this righteous indignation that lends their antipathy to wokeness a defiant and almost celebratory quality. As a friend of mine puts it, we are living in "bigot Christmas." On the right, it is common to argue that the backlash to wokeness has arisen because identity politics has gone too far and rendered itself impenetrable to the majority. (This is an argument sometimes echoed in parts of the left and centre.) This argument is usually accompanied by outlandish examples of identity politics, such as a paper that suggested Greek yoghurt has been culturally appropriated, or a blogpost decrying “white veganism”. There’s no doubt that these examples would indeed be incomprehensible to the majority of people. But the idea that ordinary people are being driven into the arms of authoritarianism because of an excitable article they read on the internet is facile – and any progressives adopting it should ask themselves why they are parroting arguments that are largely advanced by the far right. Indeed, if the political claims of people of colour and women really had gone “too far”, the distribution of power and wealth in the world would look very different. Ultimately, Laurence Fox and others like him don’t want to hear about “white privilege” because it makes visible what has always been hidden – their power – and forces them to justify it. Power is nice, and liberating, and those who have it tend not to give it up without a fight. Progressives need to wise up to the fact that they are losing this argument and decide what they are going to do in response. If they don’t, they may soon find that the future they always assumed was theirs is being made without them. Or as Florian Philippot, senior strategist to Marine Le Pen, tweeted after Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton: “Their world is collapsing. Ours is being built.
Ellie Mae O’Hagan, “The anti-woke backlash is no joke”

Top 10 songs I can’t stop listening to: I tend to listen to playlists more than songs except for moments like yesterday when I had to listen to Just Like Heaven by The Cure at top volume on repeat after @notajoinerofthings and I had a revelation that it’s about Crowley and Aziraphale. Other than that I’ve been listening to this one playlist of mine that consists of The National, Frightened Rabbit, The Weakerthans, Daughter, and Laurence Fox for literally months now.
Favourite Colour(s): Green and purple.
Favourite Ship(s): Lewis/Hathaway, Aziraphale/Crowley, Max/Morse, Jimmy/Duncan, Freddie/Bel
Lipstick or Chapstick: Chapstick. Always. There is never not a stick of unscented lip balm in my pocket.
Last Movie Watched: In the theater? Avengers Endgame.
Currently Reading: The Shadow Land by Elizabeth Kostova (I’m very much enjoying it but it’s taking me forever to finish because I keep getting distracted by Good Omens fic).
Tagging: @lucyemers, @unfortunateshape, @mylastvow, @thetimemoves, @daisyfornost and anyone else who wants to play.
