Hello! In your post about Makoto and Ken, you mentioned movie Ken is your favorite. As someone who’s only played the game, I was wondering what subtle differences there are between movie and game Ken?
hey there! I'm very honored and glad you asked cause I feel like movie Ken is an underrated aspect of his character because of one key substantial difference: He actually was close to Shinjiro and admired him... before learning the truth.
Tumblr media
spoilers for Midsummer Knight's Dream!
In the games, it's clear that the catalyst for Ken joining SEES was after he found out Shinjiro was the killer of his mom right before summer vacation was to end and he was supposed to go back to his elementary school dorm. So, he entered SEES (in his eyes rightfully) hating Shinji and with the goal of getting strong enough to kill him. Shinjiro joins right after, Ken himself being his reason, and they literally never talk... the tension is so palpable! There's also this trifecta of sorts that the developers wanted to convey which is pictured above... how Ken admires Akihiko, while Aki admires Shinji, while Ken hates Shinji. the monorail scene in Full Moon, Full Life is symbolic for this.
The movie's take on it though.. provides a slight nuance to this.
In the movies, a handful of characters become narrative foils/parallels to further develop Makoto Yuki's character such as Chidori, Natsuki, Takaya, Pharos obviously, Fuuka, etc. But one that's always stuck out to me was Ken Amada.
Right off the bat, Mitsuru assigns Makoto as Ken's bodyguard because they "share similar backgrounds". Both are orphans who lost their parents to the Dark Hour. Ken is aimless at this point, wandering about during the Dark Hour to kill time. He declines living in Iwatodai dorm even. But then, he thinks he found out the killer of his mom is actually the shadows, specifically a large one with a hulking body and blond hair. This is during the attack on the shrine where Koromaru protects it (cool thing about the movies is that we see the actual moment Koro-chan fights, instead of just the aftermath this time!). Ken's resolve is made and he joins SEES to eradicate shadows. Akihiko looks away quietly in this moment. Shinjiro rejoins SEES except it was Strega that gave him the info that Ken joined. The tension is still palpable, except this time Ken is none the wiser.
Ken immediately takes to Shinjiro because Shinji protected him during a Full Moon attack. He's so strong, everything Ken wants to be. (Nevermind Shinji's own reasoning for jumping in was his brand of punishment...)
Tumblr media
This brings me to my final point. It's no secret by now that my favorite is Makoto, and the way that Ken's words echo Makoto's own thoughts about his mom is so quietly tragic to me that provides a layer of depth to both their characters we never really get in the games. They were both driven by their own mothers' influence and deaths.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Life was not worth living after they were orphaned, but now, they can finally live again... recently in Reload the Ken and Makoto parallels I mentioned were that they basically share the same dread, and self-isolation tendencies but I like this sentiment in the movie that there's healing to be found in the little things again :( Makoto and Ken were both healing...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
anyways uh. since this is Persona 3 we all know how this ends which I will not spoil because I really, really like what they did with Makoto and his role in Shinjiro's death in the movies (+ the aftermath of it) but! I'll leave with these insane af frames
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is after Ken finds out that the large shadow with a hulking body and blond hair was not, in fact, a shadow at all - but someone's Persona.

i've been doing a bunch of tartarus runs in reload lately, and it got me thinking about how i miss certain ways FES's clunky gameplay can characterize minato… (ramble about the great clock mechanic + leveling up party members in reload vs fes under the cut)
when i got to yabbashah block in tartarus (block 3), i remember commending the developers for adding the great clock mechanic. it's a much more convenient way to keep party members at the protagonist's level- so when you think about p3 from the perspective of trying to make it easier for people to play, the mechanic succeeds in this respect.
but now that i'm in adamah block, and that i've done lots of my once-a-month tartarus runs… i think that i got a little too dependent on it, and the way that i played through reload feels like a vastly different experience from how i played FES.
in reload, my party's levels are very lopsided. minato, yukari, akihiko, mitsuru, and fuuka are all level 90+, meanwhile junpei and aigis are at level 79, and then… poor ken and koromaru are at 71 and 64 respectively. (i never got to have a great clock for them…)
meanwhile, in FES, my party's levels were much more evenly distributed and were at least level 90. i did all of this manually for every monthly tartarus run because i enjoyed having options available for the taratarus guardians and monthly operations.
with how i perceive minato, i feel that the way i played FES feels more in-line with his character than me dawdling around waiting for the great clocks in reload.
FES's gameplay loop left me with the very strong impression that minato has to work twice as hard as everyone else in SEES does. it makes sense because, yeah, he's the leader, but something about having minato run through tartarus multiple times with different groups of people just to make sure that they are adequately prepared speaks volumes about his character, to me.
and while the tired mechanic is present in reload to some degree, most notably with allowing you to freely raise your courage stat when you visit edogawa after school… the tiredness system doesn't hit the same way that FES does, i think.
the way your party members in FES will call it quits when they return to the entrance floor at tartarus when they're tired, versus minato, in spite of all his tiredness and sickness, still pushes through tartarus because it's his responsibility…. idk!!! i miss that! i feel like this really hammers home the difference between minato and the rest of SEES, how minato doesn't really see himself as a human with needs worth respecting as long as he's useful to someone.
i don't think that tartarus being tedious (in FES especially) is not what most people would describe as fun, and i can respect people thinking it's a slog. but, regardless of how it feels to play, it doesn't change that FES's gameplay loop is a fundamental building block in how i perceive minato…
of course, i do recognize that you can just opt to NOT use the great clock in reload (and it's great when players are offered the choice to not partake in mechanics)! i definitely think that if someone really wanted to, they could manually level up party members, but i do feel that kind of playstyle isn't necessarily "incentivized" to the type of people who are into playing games for Having a Good Time. it's kind of like… "why would you do that when there's a much more convenient option available to you."
in any case! despite my woes, i do want to emphasize that i'm glad that reload has a much more smoother gameplay loop than the original P3 did, because it does make the game more accessible to people. having played both FES and reload, it feels very strongly apparent to me how the core gameplay formula of persona has really been refined in the past 18 years (to think og p3 was 2006 and reload is 2024.. time flies!). and reload has made revisiting a story that i love so dearly much, much easier because the gameplay just bops!
at the same time, due to my "i miss characterization informed by weird and dated FES gameplay quirks" woes, i still think that playing FES is worthwhile. (really, i feel this way about all iterations of p3! i think it's worthwhile to see what each version and side media has to say even if it doesn't Land™ for you.) but i also understand why people wouldn't want to play it, so i will keep writing posts about things i liked from FES's gameplay because i'm still very fond of FES (especially in respects to minato. these mechanics are so telling about him!!!) 💪

PERSONA 3 SHOWDOWN, GO!
All propaganda and what each competitor is from under the cut (tw for suicide mentions in Makoto's propaganda)
Makoto Yuuki/Minato Arisato (Persona 3)
He’s suicidal but also an allegory for Jesus Christ. He is also a door. He can also date a robot. He’s my special little guy. He is Orpheus but also Thanatos but also not. He’s got autistic swag. He doesn’t care. He saves the world
The loss of his parents informs everything about his character. His lack of fear in regards to death, his struggle to form attachments, his apathetic attitude to his surroundings… And, yet, the game is about overcoming that and making friends and learning to live and love and care about people. It's a game about Makoto learning to be a person again.
I could write a several page essay but I will try not to. He was orphaned at like 7 years old. His parents were killed officially in a car crash, I believe, but unofficially shadows (the enemies of the game) were involved. Immediately after this, and I mean Immediately, he had the shadow of Death Itself sealed inside him. Then carried that around for a decade, before returning to the city this happened in. (It's implied that he was passed between relatives and didn't have a long standing residence but I can't remember how Canon that is specifically in the og game). he sacrifices his life to save ALL OF HUMANITY and I love him dearly
The coolest bitch on the planet.
Look at him. Very gender AND very depressed. Also, his parents are brutally killed in a car accident that leaves him with severe mental health problems and a lack of regard of his own life. Eventually, he grows out of this mindset and learns to love life until his own tragic end :( a vote for him is a vote for door jesus and the world being saved through love 👍
Mitsuru Kirijo (Persona 3)
Her father dies in her arms during the course of the game. Her mother had died years beforehand. Mitsuru had always wanted to make her father proud and relieve his burden, but then he dies. She struggles with this for a long time in-game before her girlfriend breaks her out of it, but yeah. Vote for this depressed lesbian. She really needs all the help she can get :(

This is from the smut portion of Chapter 2
So to give context: Minato had just drank the blood of junpei from a blood bag in front of Junpei, prompting him to be horny. The two already made out and are about to go to the next step when this happens.
Junpei shrugged as he mouthed at Minato’s still-clothed erection, getting a reaction out of Minato, who let out a soft gasp at the sudden contact. As he turned his head away from Junpei, he noticed the cards of both Orpheus and Hermes floating away from their place in their pockets and slipping under the door. “Did those two just-” Minato asked. “What?” Junpei wondered. “I could’ve sworn I saw our cards slide under the goddamned door!” “Yeah, you forget?” “Riiiight, they feel the same things we do.” “Now who’s the dumbass?” “Junpei, a good chunk of my blood is in my dick, do you think my brain is working right?”

a part of you lives on in me
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
pairing: makoto yuki / minato arisato x gn!reader
summary: during a visit to makoto's grave, you think you're hallucinating when a certain blue haired boy appears next to you…
tags: established relationship, angst with a happy ending, reincarnated!makoto yuki, mentions of s.e.e.s. (+moving on), hurt/comfort, wholesome fluff, reader & makoto's lives are connected
Tumblr media
“i miss you more than i thought was possible”
ever since makoto's death, you came to visit his grave every day. while the other members of s.e.e.s. often accompanied you at the start, slowly less and less tagged along with you. they were able to move on, while you weren't yet.
after all, makoto had been your boyfriend. he meant a lot to everyone, but what the two of you had was special. losing him was a pain unlike any other. a pain that never seemed to fade, only growing as time passed.
“if there's any chance for us to meet again… maybe in another life. maybe in death. then please… please, let me see you one last time.”
you were clinging onto a dream that wasn't realistic. wishing that you could see makoto again. even when you knew that it could never happen, you prayed for it every day. until eventually, your prayers were answered.
“you still come here, every day?”
a familiar voice reached out to you. for a moment, you believed it to simply be your own imagination. you didn't even turn around, as you answered:
“i'll continue to come here, every day. it's the only place where you and i can still be together…”
“you never were the type to let go that easily. you never give up, even when things seem impossible.”
there that voice was again. as you finally turned around, a boy with blue hair, covering half of his face, stood next to you, looking down at the grave.
“perhaps it was that will of yours that brought me here. or my own longing to see you again one last time…”
you stared up at the boy, frozen in place. you could barely see his face, with his hair covering up most of it. but you were sure that if you could see it, that it would be…
“makoto…?” you whispered, scared that you may be wrong. “it is you, isn't it…?”
as his head turned, a breeze hushed through the graveyard, blowing the hair out of his face. and as his face was visible to you, you could see those kind eyes of the boy you loved and lost.
“it's been a while.” makoto said with a small smile, as he sat down next to you, in front of his own grave. “i never thought i'd get the chance to see you again…”
“why are you here? are you…?”
you reached out your hand, longing to feel makoto's warmth. to see if he was real or not. yet the idea that he was just a figment of your imagination scared you too much and your hand lingered close to his own, not daring to touch him.
“i couldn't move on.” makoto confessed. “i should've made my peace with what happened. i thought i had. but a part of me still clung to life. it clung to you, wishing i could be with you again. i thought i was ready to die… but i wasn't. not when i was leaving you behind…”
“and… what does that mean for us?”
makoto carefully reached out his hand to hold yours. when they touched, you could feel how warm he was. he was real. he had to be real.
“as long as you're here, i can't move on. i can't die, when you're still keeping me alive. i suppose… i got a second chance to live. a second chance to be with you.”
it sounded too good to be true. all those months, you had wished for makoto to come back to you. yet when he did return, you couldn't believe it.
“and if i'm gone…?”
“if you die, i'll die. we're connected.”
makoto's hand squeezed your own. he could see this was a lot for you right now. your life had changed so much since his death. and now that he returned to you, it would all change again.
“makoto…?”
after a moment of silence, you turned to your boyfriend. tears lingered in the corner of your eyes and you held tight onto his hand.
“welcome back…”
makoto smiled softly, wiping away the tears of relief that began to run down your cheeks. he pressed a gentle kiss onto your lips, before whispering:
“i'm home.”

Guide to Persona MC names
Just a small guide to help newcomers understand all the names and nicknames/fannames for their fav Persona MCs. Keep in mind this is main games/nameless MC's only (so I won't list Aigis in the P3 but I will mention Maya as well as the notes at the bottom, this is due to how I structured P2 vs P3 sections) (Edit: may add to this list later but it's pretty complete for now)(Edit 2: Note that Shunjiko translates as Protagonist/Hero/Main character):
Persona 1:
P1MC: shorthand for Persona 1 Main Character
(P1) Hero/Shunjiko: Japanese generic title
Boy with Earring: In-game moniker
Naoya Toudou: Manga name
Yuuya Narumi: (one of the) DramaCD names (note: other dramaCD is just labeled "protagonist")
Jihei Suzakuin: Novel name
Persona 2:
Tatsuya Suou: MC for P2 Innocent Sin, can be renamed and it'll carry over in EP (and Katsuya's last name will change as well)
Maya Amano: MC for P2 Eternal Punishment. Cannot be changed, just like Aigis
Kazumi Kiba: MC for the manga Persona: Tsumi to Batsu. (not really related to the games but it takes place right before P2EP, Edit: mentioned him because I've seen some people think he's suppose to be an adaptation of Tatsuya or something when he's just a different character all together)
Persona 3 (Male):
P3MC: Short hand for Persona 3 Main Character
(P3) Hero/Shunjiko: Japanese generic title
Kitaro: The Japanese Fanname, due to his resemblance to the main character Kitaro from Gegege no Kitaro.
Minato Arisato: Manga name
Makoto Yuki: Movie name (*gets adopted later into games)
Sakuya Shiomi: Stage Play Name
Leader: Generic Name for MC in Drama CDs and such
Roger: A name used in AtlusUSA marketing (maybe related to this line in the game?)
Door-kun: (English) Western fandom joke nickname, spoiler reasons.
Gettaro/Tsukitaro* Yamada: provisional name for P3MC in the movies' script. A play on Kitaro. (thanks @aliliceswonderland for reminding me, as well as the other's! TToTT)
Persona 3 (Female):
P3FeMC or just FeMC (sometimes/old variations FeShe or MShee): Shorthand for (Persona 3) Female Main Character. Since SMT if/Tamaki, Maya, and Aigis have fixed names (in Persona canon), this one is usually who people mean when they hear "FeMC." Though some might use this word as a "what if" for P4/5/6 having a female protagonist. But it's usually for the P3 one.
Leader: Generic Name for FeMC in DramaCDs and such
(P3) Heroine/Josei Shunjiko : Japanese generic title
Hamuko (Arisato): The Japanese fanname, IF Arisato is used, it's derived from the P3MC's manga name.
Minako Arisato: The Western Fanname, derived from Minato Arisato but making it "ko" since a lot of females use that name (note: Minato is actually a unisex name to begin with)
Makoto Yuki: P3MC's movie name. SOME adopted this name after the movie was release due to being a unisex name)
Kotone Shiomi: Stage Play Name (*only official name she's gotten, and unlike P3/4/5MCs whose names were taken from anime adaptions, she's the only one to have her's taken from the stage play).
Door-Chan: (English) Western fandom joke nickname, spoiler reasons.
Canon-chan/Non-canon-chan: (English) Western fandom joke nickname, usually in regards to her canon status. (answer: she is canon)
Lunako Gekko: Name used for Famitsu article
Persona 4:
P4MC: Short hand for Persona 4 Main Character
(P4) Hero/Shunjiko: Japanese generic title
Leader: Generic Name for MC in Drama CDs and such
Bancho(u): Japanese Fan Nickname (he's also called this in Arena's files, short hand for his Arena fighter title)
Souji Seta/Soji Seta: Manga Name
Yu Narukami: Anime Name (*was later used for games)
Various Stage Names: Unlike the P3MCs who have a fixed stage play name, P4's gimmick was to change the name each showing. The ones used in the DVDs are: "Yuuya Seta" for the first one, "Hayato Asakawa" for the second. (complete list, at least for the 2nd stage play coming soon)
Charlie "Chuck" Tunoku: Giant Bomb Endurance run of P4 (I think this is the more famous one)
Kenpachi Ramasama/Ramasama Kenpachi: Two Best friends play P4
Chad: (English) Western fandom joke nickname, something something blame the anime (originated around it's run) esp the scene with the King's game. He got all the chicks or something.
Persona 5:
P5MC: Short hand for Persona 5 Main Character
(P5) Hero/Shunjiko: Japanese generic title
Joker: His in-game code name
Akira Kurusu: Manga name
Ren Amamiya: Anime Name (*was later used for games)
Various Stage Names: Like P4, they adopted the gimmick of doing different names each showing. The ones used on the DVDS are: "Itsuki Onda" for the first one, "Naoki Toudou" for the second one, "Nozomu Akase" for the third one, and "Kaito Shinno" for the forth/last one. (complete list here)
Chair-kun: In reference to the original teaser for P5 (there were a lot of chairs)
Pego: Fan nickname for P5MC, usually english fandom from what I've seen. Stands for Pe(rsona) and Go (aka 5 in japanese). It's a very common one and I...literally forgot TT0TT
Akiren: Alternative fan nickname for P5MC, for fans that like both Akira and Ren's names but don't want to choose I suppose.
Persona 5 X:
P5XMC: Short hand for Persona 5X Main Character
(P5X) Hero/Shunjiko: Japanese generic title
Wonder: His In-game code name
Fun facts/other notes:
FeMC is the only one who breaks the streak of using anime names (due to not having an anime adaptations), it also causes P3 to cross between two different kinds of supplementary canon. (see more on this reblog)
Not all of P4's various stage names are known, namely (haha) the first stage play. If you dig you can find all of the 2nd ones (I should really post that list one day DX)
Despite P1MC not having a consistent chosen name, Atlus seems fond of Naoya, specifically using Naoya/Kazuya together (Devil Survivor 1 manga and P5 Mementos Quest mission) with characters. If you read the P1 manga you'd understand why they put those two names together.
Kitaro and Hamuko were used as place holder text for the P3MC and FeMC chars names for PQ2.
Banchou was used for P4MC's mocking title card in Arena/Ultimax, it was translated as "Kingpin" in english.
Some other chars I didn't listed as having "Leader" could very well be called "Leader" at some point.
Shin Kanzato is the MC to the anime Persona: Trinity Soul, a series that takes place 10 years after P3. It's in it's own separate canon from the P3 we know, Edit: but I'm mentioning him because of it being the original sequel of P3 for a brief period.
Aigis' name obvie can't be changed just like Maya, but she is the MC of both The Answer, as well as the Aigis: The First Mission cellphone game. (sometimes fans refer to her as a "toaster"...bc she's a robot)
Edit: Anna is the MC of P2's novel adaptations iirc, and Naoto and Yosuke are protagonists of their own books/novels/manga. There are most likely others but I will probs end it there (as I just wanna stick with games/original MCs and having Aigis/Kiba/Shin was a bit dicey)
Similar to Pego, P3MC may also be referred to as Pesan, and P4MC as Peyon. I haven't personally seen it (considering the other more prominent names they've had) but I wanted to list it just in case.
To update: Since I mentioned Roger, it's only fair I dig for all the other ones used for other characters (it's just Roger is the most popular, and it's not used often even at that).

I know that I post many protagonists tags for Persona series (mainly the 25th anniversary ones), but for those who didn't know I will explain the origins of their name and what names I refer to the most in this Tumblr. Sure, you can use the other names as well, and for different names than those mentioned below you can search on the internet if you want.
Persona 1 Protagonist: While he's mostly unnamed in official media, most fans refer him as 'Naoya Toudou' from the manga, which had more personalities than in other adaptations.
Persona 2 Protagonists: The two heroes, called 'Tatsuya Suou' and 'Maya Amano' are already canon at the beginning, so no need to add more. You can rename Tatsuya if you want to in his game, though.
Persona 3 Male Protagonist: There are two canon names that I usually add when posting/reblogging, which are 'Minato Arisato' from the manga and 'Makoto Yuki' from The Movie. But I usually use the movie name though because it was used for Dancing in Moonlight and Portable remaster (if you change the language of the game) too, just like his female counterpart below for the latter. Though I use Makoto often for anything about him, sometimes I'll refer him by his surname Yuki to prevent confusion to Persona 5 character with the same first name.
Persona 3 Female Protagonist: In general I don't use stage play name for the protagonists, but 'Kotone Shiomi' is the only official name she had (names like 'Minako Arisato' and 'Hamuko Arisato' are fanmade names), so sure, I'm including her name here. This was even used in Portable remaster too.
Persona 4 Protagonist: Same as P3 Hero, with manga 'Souji Seta' and anime 'Yu Narukami' as one of his famous names. Since the latter is used the most for spinoff games and Golden remaster, I'm gonna call him Yu too.
Persona 5 Protagonist: Same as the two male protagonists before him, with 'Akira Kurusu' for the manga and 'Ren Amamiya' for The Animation, Dancing in Starlight and Royal remaster. I usually refer him as Ren in most occasions.

A Burden (One They're Glad To Carry)
Summary:
“Maybe we should go back. We’re close, yes, but I don’t know if it’s worth the risk.”
Akihiko paused in fixing his gloves, gaze locking onto Makoto.
“I think we can do it. Let us try, leader.”
“I don’t like agreeing with ‘im,” Shinjiro slowly got up from where he sat, rolling his shoulders as he stood at full height, “but I think we got a good chance. Just ‘cause I’m a lil tired doesn’t mean I can’t fight. I know when to focus. If we come back we gotta go through all these god awful floors again.”
“Yuki-san, if they both believe we can do it, I do too. I trust you to call a tactical retreat, if we need it. I can keep fighting.” Which was only slightly a lie. Ken was getting tired from overusing his buffing skills, but if he focused on keeping back and shooting, Makoto would never know! Perfect plan!
As Makoto closed his eyes and thought, they all shuffled. Usually he was quick on decision making, he must really be unsure…
“Alright. We’ll try. But the moment anything goes wrong, we’re out of there.”
All three nodded in acknowledgement. Too bad none told the others they were gonna ignore that order.
