So if you look at my works, mga pelikula ko, even my novels, very strong ang aking mga nanay. I always come up with strong mothers na mga characters. Pinupunuan ko yung mga wala. I'm trying to recreate my mother every time in every mother character. And even if minsan hindi ako conscious about it, subconscious na ang gumagawa pinupunuan niya yung wala sa loob ko.
This is an excerpt from the first few pages of Ricky Lee's "San Nagsisimula Ang Kwento?"
I think it stumped me how, in every writer, there's a void in our soul we are trying to fillāwhether itās longing, love, being understood, seen, or a sense of belongingāand that void manifests into a character, like in Ricky Lee's case, a strong image of a mother.
From what I remember, I read a famous author, Mina V. Esguerra of Romance Class, here in the Philippines as to why Romance is an important genre; it's a lens through which we learn how to love and how to be loved.
Mayhap there was a time romance writers were treated with cruelty paraded as love and decided that it was enough, and sat down, and wrote how to be loved.
But no. You can't just simply give steps to find love.
You have to lay it all properly.
A story needs to be told because, to introduce characters, show who they are as a person. There's a journey of growth through love. not merely outlines from start to finish, but rather an emphasis of real struggles and worries. This isnāt about using heartbreaks, misunderstandings, and moments of joy as mere plot devices; instead, itās about magnifying the messiness of human intricacies, celebrating the beauty of vulnerability, and confronting the fear of taking risksāa mirror of our own complexity in stories. Through their trials and triumphs, we recognize parts of ourselves, and that truly beguiles me because I said "a mirror of our own complexities" but instead of seeing just myself, I find the author staring back, like my struggles are seen and have been felt by someone else.
Earlier, someone asked me what were my favorite tropes. My head immediately couldn't think anything but I sat on the thought pondering and decided to google. It became clear to me what tropes resonated with me, and how my favorite pieces of literature had those elements in them, one way or anotherāand how they are present in the stories I write: friendships, found family, and adventures.
Even when I struggle with it, writing is a beautiful thing. It both fills in the void that is empty within us while also embracing others who feel the sameāproviding comfort of being understood.

He gives her an ultimatum, forcing her to choose between him and Adam, the boy she loves. Dalia's heart is torn between the two men, and she finds herself struggling to make a decision. As Dalia's boundaries and courage are tested, hearts are broken in this epic love story. The novel explores themes of love, friendship, and self-discovery as Dalia navigates the complexities of her relationships with Ryan and Adam. Throughout the book, readers are taken on a journey of self-discovery as Dalia learns to trust her own instincts and follow her heart. The novel is beautifully written and is sure to leave readers feeling uplifted and inspired. "Kiss and Cry" is the first book in a series of free romance novels by Mina V. Esguerra. The book is a must-read for fans of romance novels and anyone looking for a heartwarming story about love and self-discovery. ExcerptĀ : Dalia sat on the cold bench in the ice skating rink, feeling more alone than ever before. Her left leg was wrapped in ice, and the pain was excruciating. She had always loved ice skating, but this fall had left her feeling broken and defeated. As she sat there, lost in her thoughts, a tall, handsome stranger approached her. His name was Ryan, and he had been watching her skate before she fell. He introduced himself and offered to help her. At first, Dalia was hesitant. She didn't know this man, and she didn't want to be a burden. But something about Ryan's kindness and sincerity made her trust him. He helped her to her feet and offered to take her to the hospital. As they walked to his car, Dalia couldn't help but feel drawn to Ryan. There was something about him that made her feel safe and protected. But at the same time, she couldn't stop thinking about Adam, the boy she had been in love with for years. Ryan noticed Dalia's hesitation and gave her an ultimatum. He told her that he was interested in her and wanted to pursue a relationship, but he wouldn't compete with Adam. Dalia was torn between the two men, but she knew she had to make a decision. As the car pulled away from the ice skating rink, Dalia couldn't help but wonder what her future held. She knew that whatever decision she made, it would change her life forever. And with Ryan by her side, she felt ready to take on whatever challenges lay ahead. Download Book Read Book Online

LEARNING TO FALL BY @minavesguerra
A cute novel about your life goals, your motivation, your choices in life... And living your life like it's a novel. And falling in love to someone WHO ISN'T YOUR TYPE.
I've been looking for this book around NBS before the pandemic. Likely, I found a copy on Shopee. Some parts are clichƩ, but hey! It's cute and sexy and romantic. It also introduced me to the sport, Rugby (not that orange adhesive glue, BTW) it can get you out of boredom. It's a little motivation to pursue what your heart wants, if you're late, do not stop until you get it.

Some Romance Novel Recs for Valentineās Day
I donāt think many ppl who follow me read romance novels, but! for anyone who does, or who would like to try some bc they like shippy fanfic or want to try a new genre, here is a list of recs for Valentineās Day, a day of romance. I tend to like romances with high levels of conflict--melodrama, thriller subplots, etc--but a few of these are also fluffy. Kind of a mix.
F/F
With This Ring by Cynthia Dane**--high society lesbian marriage of convenience
Off Limits by Vaness North--forbidden romance with a bar singer
A Treason of Truths by Ada Harper--sci-fi queen/spymaster ship, lots of intrigue
Rulebreaker by Cathy Pegau--sci-fi corporate espionage romance
Hungry for It by Fiona Zedde**--forbidden romance with a friendās mother
M/FĀ
Wanna Bet? by Talia Hibbert**--Player FMC and her best friend whoās been pining after her for years
Against the Dark by Carolyn Crane--Secret agent and safecracker pull a heist and fall for each other
That Kind of Guy by Mina V. Esguerra--Exes reconnecting. Mellow, largely about FMC considering what she wants from life.
Redemption by Kenya Wright--FMC escaping abuse meets a man with a dark past who offers her protection
Ante Up by Christina C. Jones--Rich alpha male gambler meets not so rich but better than him female gambler, sparks fly. Actually very angsty and pretty dark. I read this book tonight :) Itās definitely a pageturner.
M/MĀ
The Undue Arrogance duology by Cole McCade**--Two books, both about rich dudes with issues who want to get dommed
Curses, Foiled Again by Sera Trevor--A vampire and an unintimidated witch
Any Old Diamonds by K.J. Charles**--Victorian diamond heist with BDSM in the background
Reason Number One by Briston Brooks--Intensely tropey college romance. (I read this a while back and donāt remember it super well, but I remember it was sappy and fun.)
Other
One Night in Boukos by A.J. Demas (m/m and m/f)--Two dudes search for their boss in a fantasy city, and find love instead
From Scratch by Katrina Jackson (m/m/f)--Sometimes you move to a new town and start a bakery and hook up with two different guys I guess
Iāve only put one book per author here (otherwise this list would be a lot longer), but Iāve starred a few authors! These authors are faves of mine and honestly Iād recommend anything by them. Cynthia Dane (aka Hildred Billings, as she has two pseudonyms) is excellent for f/f millionaire romances with alpha females who can be kind of jerks. Fiona Zedde is good for f/f that isnāt afraid to get dark, uncomfortable, messy, vulnerable. (Actually my fave book by her, Nightshade, is more erotic thriller than romance and so did not make this list, but sheās great in general.) Talia Hibbert writes m/f romances with characters you just have to root for, relationships that feel warm but MCs that feel complicated. Cole McCade I mostly know for his Criminal Intentions series, which is a mystery series with a gay romance subplot--Iād absolutely recommend that series but know going in that itās really dark and the burn is slow as hell. And K.J. Charles youāve probably heard of, as sheās well known for her m/m historical romances, and the hype is deserved; her books are really just a ton of fun.
Anyways, I just thought Iād throw these out here since itās Valentineās Day :) If anyone wants to recommend me romance novels, feel free to go ahead.
