The Black Sisters ventured up the stairs, casting uneasy glances at the house elf heads hanging on the wall.

“If we are not good, we will end up like this too.” the eldest of the siblings affirmed, pointing out the horrors exposed.

“Stop, you’re lying.” Andromeda replied, who had nevertheless turned a little pale.

“I'm just warning you.” The dark-haired girl said, before changing the subject.

“They are talking about grandmother.” Bellatrix said, referring to the adults who had gathered in the living room and closed the door behind them.

"Why?” Andromeda asked.

"She is going to die. Father said this Christmas was her last.” she replied simply. The seven-years-old girl barely understood the concept of death.

"Is it very serious?” asked the younger girl with big worried eyes. She hugged Narcissa a little tighter.

Her eldest didn't answer, her eyebrows furrowed, not really knowing what to answer.

“Bella?” she insisted.

"…No don’t worry.” her older sister reassured her, to Drom’s great relief. Bellatrix knew it was a bit of a lie but she didn't want to make her sad.

En tant qu'ainé d'une fratrie avec des petites sœurs en bas âge, il n'est pas rare que je voie défiler dans mon fil d'actualité des photos de mes sœurs postées par ma belle-mère. Certes, nous sommes loin du statut de « kid influence », mais il n'en reste pas moins que, déjà à un si jeune âge, elles ont une présence numérique. Cela m'a fait réfléchir sur l'impact de la visibilité sur Internet sur la vie privée des « kids influences ». En voyant ces enfants grandir sous les projecteurs numériques, je ne peux m'empêcher de me demander si leur vie privée est vraiment respectée. Sont-ils vraiment conscients des implications de leur présence en ligne ? 

Les enfants influenceurs représentent une nouvelle facette de notre société numérique moderne. Dans un monde où les frontières entre la sphère publique et privée s'estompent de plus en plus, l'émergence de ce phénomène sur les réseaux sociaux soulève des interrogations fondamentales sur la protection de leur vie privée. Ces jeunes sont confrontés à une singularité moderne : leur célébrité numérique les expose à un public mondial, certains sont même placés au rang de personnalité publique, mais en même temps, ils restent des enfants qui ne dépendent que de leurs parents, qui sont souvent à l'origine de cette exposition ? En effet, comme le soulève MilkMagazine, en 2024 « certains pères ou certaines mères, notamment les influenceurs, dévoilent le quotidien de leurs enfants sans aucune limite, du petit-déjeuner au coucher, les sorties en famille, les anniversaires. » Leur présence croissante sur les plateformes de médias sociaux soulève des questions sur la protection de leur vie privée et sur les conséquences de cette exposition précoce à un public mondial. 

De plus, le rôle des adultes dans ce phénomène est central, car c'est grâce à eux que l'enfant a accès à ce monde numérique. Les parents (ou tuteurs) jouent un rôle crucial dans la gestion de la vie des enfants influenceurs, mais il est difficile de déterminer si leurs actions sont motivées par le bien-être des enfants ou par des intérêts financiers ou encore une volonté de se faire connaître personnellement. Cette ambiguïté soulève des préoccupations éthiques fondamentales quant à la responsabilité des adultes dans la protection de la vie privée et du bien-être des enfants. La justice et ses institutions semblent prendre ce sujet au sérieux avec une nouvelle proposition visant à renforcer la loi actuelle visant à garantir le respect du droit à l'image de l'enfant, en particulier sur les réseaux sociaux.

WRITING CHINA IN COUNTRY Poem - Campus

‘Writing China in Country’ is an exclusive milk series which showcases the thoughts and creative writing pieces from Bath Spa University students who studied in China last year. Writer Alex Wilbraham paints an image of the Beijing scene and shares their poem ‘Campus’.

Although we covered most of Beijing’s well-known sights, the image that always comes to mind is our countless walks across the Beijing Foreign Studies Institutes North Campus. To get to the campus we had to walk through an underpass – which probably saved us from many a road accident – and brought us past elderly ladies and gentleman selling Bric a’ Brac and flower paintings. Treading once again above ground we strolled across to the campus and back and forth many times throughout the day.

We would head to the canteen for a breakfast of foods with varying degrees of recognisability, and come back after a day of sight-seeing and wandering past men and women doing their evening laps and hearing the thunk of rackets hitting tennis balls.

The paved lanes, frequented by humans of all ages, mopeds, and vans, lit by bright street lights. We always saw a group of women in traditional dress twirling fans and silk scarfs as they danced to seemingly the same track each evening – their children often joined in, however slightly less gracefully.

I often felt as though the whole of Beijing gathered together at the university. Which actually might have been true. Because that campus was massive.

Campus

I hear the cars on the ring road

the ring road coughing,

as I walk under the ring road

the ring road walking.

Salesmen under the ring road

the ring road talking.

Red light acceleration.

Pedestrians crossing the ring road

the ring road crossing

slow motion.

100-meter racing

racing across the ring road

the ring road racing.

Chasing,

the smell of diesel fuel

leaking under the ring road

the ring road choking,  

choking up the dense air

furballs from diseased lungs,  

mucus spitting.

Stray dogs,

crystal ball eyes,

waiting outside the café

the café waiting.

Local students sipping

watermelon,

watermelon sipping.

Before sunrise running

running around the track,

basketball in the shadow

of a Chinese oak.

Curving streaks of sunshine

streaks of sunshine curving

across man-made webs

green turf.

Dancing to lullabies

under the streetlights,

summer air weaving

weaving summer air

with silken shawls.

Crossing the ring road

the ring road crossing.
