"I don't think I care for Superman," Billie muttered. "He makes no sense." None of this made sense. Then again, most media didn't make sense unless it was a documentary or educational program. Perhaps Billie just missed the person she'd been sharing most of this stuff with. It was fun to lean into the silliness, the unbelievability, of things like superheroes or dinosaurs when you were appreciating it with someone important. She started to nod; she knew what a wolverine was. But then Efe mentioned yellow suits and claws, and she groaned. "I don't know a wolverine like that."

Billie laughed a little. "I think some of them have ways to communicate inside them, though I'm admittedly not an expert in scuba gear. I've never needed it." He was right, though. There was little in comics that was actually realistic, and Billie was beginning to think that, perhaps, that was the point. "I think that... excitement is subjective. What you find exciting might not be what others do, and that's perfectly fine. I feel like there's enough... excitement in this town most of the time that extra is almost unnecessary." She was, quite frankly, exhausted by excitement. If she didn't force herself to do other things, Billie was quite certain she'd simply stay at home, in her bathtub, and sleep. Or scream underwater. She wasn't certain. "That's kind of nice, not having to interact with things. When I was younger, I'd try to find websites that would... let me watch recordings of musicals," she murmured. "Documentaries would be nice. About anything?"

It was hard for her not to hunch in on herself, shrugging. Was this place actually safe? Safer. Maybe. "Thanks. I'm not-- I'm not like that anymore," she said softly. She appreciated the turn of conversation, latching onto it. "Do the names of the vessels mean anything, or are they just supposed to be... fun? But I agree. I think that history is hard, though. Some people don't want to reckon with the past."

Efe cocked his head to one side, his brow shooting up as he spoke. "Well, Superman can also...fly in space, I think. So he's just impervious in general. He's an alien of some kind. His weakness is kryptonite. It's, like, this glowing green rock that takes away his powers." Pursing up his lips, Efe gave a low hum. "They're another group of superheroes. I think maybe they go to a secret school or something? Do you know Wolverine? Like, the guy with the yellow suit and the claws? He's one." He laughed, ducking his head. "Ah, well, I insist you were."

Efe smiled. "I don't know. Do scuba suits have little radios in them or anything? Maybe they could talk to everyone else who's also wearing a scuba suit. But between you and me, I'm not sure comics care very much for what is and is not realistic." Thinking for a moment, Efe allowed his features to harden. He gave a weak shrug. "I'm not sure, though. To be honest, I work in what a lot of people would consider an exciting job, I guess, but at the same time...I don't think I really do very many exciting things. I'm sure someone must give lessons around here, but...I don't know." He shrugged, deflating a bit, before giving a nod. He worried, quite often, that he was boring. "The good thing about YouTube is you don't actually have to interact beyond watching if you don't want to. But sure. Some are like movies. Others are more like...podcasts. Or documentaries maybe. Just about any topic you could ever want."

Efe crossed his arms, shifting a bit in place. "Ah...Yeah. I had this buddy, who...well. I'm glad you're here and safe." Said friend and he did not really talk anymore, after Efe had reacted badly to the revelation of a hunter's upbringing. He was trying to give more benefit of the doubt in this moment. "I..uh, read this book about the USS Tang? It was my dad's really. But then I picked it up and started thumbing through, and before you know it, I was reading another one about the USS Alligator, which was the American Navy's first submarine. I just think history can be interesting. We repeat what we don't learn from. Every damn day, to be honest."

I was in a secret military run organization that experimented on teens and tweens and broadcast their screams in Red Rooms. My karate teacher, my color guard captain, even my own mother didn't believe me. There was also a TV show based on the organization.

TASK #23 THANKFUL

I'm thankful for my life.

Despite the fact that we have no relationship, I am thankful for the fact that my parents brought me into this world, that they loved each other enough to decide to have children, that they gave me three siblings who are my family. I'm grateful that their families settled in Merrock, that they called this place their home so that I can call it home, too, and build my life here.

I'm thankful for the lifelong friends that I made in the military. For the lessons that it taught me, the man that it shaped me into being today. The discipline and in some ways, the compassion. The fact that I know how to make a bed better than anyone else that I know, too, that helps. I'm thankful for the friends that I still talk to, and the ones that I pray to at night, who are no longer with us. And, today especially, all of the veterans who came before me and came after me, and will always come along.

And I'm thankful to Maine. For the forests and the landscapes, for the wildlife and the quiet nights and the cool, crisp air that has comforted me a dozen times over when I've needed it the most. I'm grateful for Annabelle Lee and the home she has given me for years, and the Jeep that gets me from point A to point B.

Every morning, I am thankful for the air in my lungs and the thump of my heart against my rib cage. I am thankful to be alive.

there were a lot of people whom gi-hun felt grateful to see. several of them were soldiers, or makeshift ones, anyways. they'd done what they could together. they'd stormed towards and overthrown those pink-uniformed fuckers. so... when he saw his companion again? he thought that he was close to fainting. gi-hun would have hugged the other, but he was not sure if that embrace would be reciprocated, so he refrained from acting such a way. "young-il! oh my god, young-il, you're okay? did those soldiers get you? were you captured? i... i cannot believe that you are here and we have found one another."

Having faced challenges throughout his life, Briggs is resilient. He sees obstacles as opportunities to grow and is adept at adapting to changing circumstances while maintaining his calm and faith. A part of him has never quite felt like he belonged so he has always worked a little harder to try and fit in. There is nothing he wants more than approval from his adoptive family. They’ve never given him reason to feel any different than their biological children but he still feels lesser than at times. A part of that is because he a part of him has always questioned where he came from and why his biological family did not opt to keep him. He firmly believes in there being a purpose for everything and is content to trust in that plan. He is a natural leader but is more inclined to be a follower. He is humble and not above doing the hard work to get a job done. He enjoys engaging with diverse groups of people, sharing his experiences, and learning from others. He enjoys an active life style dividing his time between his spiritual studies, mentoring people in the community or just enjoying community events. BACKGROUND / BIO

The first three years of Briggs life are a mystery. He doesn’t know much about his biological family aside from the fact that he was born in Merrock and adopted into a local family. He always felt like the odd duckling out, knowing that he didn’t biologically belong to them but his adoptive parents were good to him and he had a decent relationship with his adoptive siblings.

In school, he was book smart. He did well in his classes and generally got along with people around him. People assumed he would be athletic and he was encouraged to try out for sports but they weren’t really his thing. While he did play some basketball, he was never that great and spent most of the time warming the bench. He was far better at nerdy things, preferring to hang out with the D&D crowd over the athletes, even if he would have been included.

At the age of eighteen, he decided joined the military serving in the Army. He enjoyed the routine and fellowship that came with basic training. While he wasn’t as skilled as some of his peers, he did the absolute best he could and gained respect of his peers for being someone they could trust. He spent most of his military career in Kuwait. Most of his service was spent during humanitarian work instead of combat. He was fortunate in that. Through the years, he saw plenty of others pass through who were not as fortunate as he. He also saw a lot of horror with refugees fleeing combat zones. These experiences were formative to the person he has ultimately become.

After spending several years abroad and the expiration of his service tour, he decided to return home. Feeling inspired by everything he’d seen abroad, he felt a calling to turn to a higher purpose. He enrolled in seminary school and has been studying to be a pastor. While he is working through school, he is working case aide for the local Department of Social Services, providing support and guidance to families in need.

the crazy thing about being a gay in the closet during my (obligatory) military service is just... hearing all the dumb shit cishet men have to say. i've adopted the habit of just nodding and smiling and joking around because going against these twats will make me a thousand times more miserable than i already am here. but. like. dude? do they really need to talk about burning lgbt flags? to insult and torture the few gay guys that are out? to insult trans people out of nowhere with venomous hatred? to talk about women as if they were less than, as if they were objects? is it at all necessary to be that shitty of a human being? surely i'm not surprised this way of thinking still exists (i'm not that naive) but my very point here is that all this hatred seems so... performative? like "look guys. i am not like them. i do not align myself with them. so i will perform until you recognize me as one of you, and not one of them." we got you the first time. the repetition is unnecessary. to me, this just reeks of weak-willed behavior. to live in dissonance with the normal and natural world that surrounds you, living in a delusion of what should be is just... crazy behavior to me.

Quite interesting what the American election might mean for Europe, because if Trump wins he's walking out of NATO and while Russia has some respect for EU + the US as a combined force, the military power of the EU alone is honestly not super impressive. (Not that I generally consider the US, the American military, military power in general or even the EU a force of good. All of the above institutions are worthy of criticism/not objectively "good")
