General (platonic) Es Headcanons

(🍁) I really love Es so here are some headcanons :3 You both are in high school btw!

-> Es who is an advanced English/Psychology student. Generally takes all their classes as advanced as they can. You aren't sure how they handle all the homework but somehow they do...

-> Es enjoys studying with you! As long as you don't ask them unnecessary questions, they will gladly help you with your homework as well! Of course they're going to tease you the whole way but it is genuine help.

-> Es' weakness is any science class. But they still get amazing grades so it's barely a weakness. Their teachers want to get along with them so bad but they do not give a shit.

-> Es sometimes falls asleep for the entirety of a class period, and absolutely no one can wake them up. Teachers just assume their tired from studying that they let them sleep.

-> Es who sometimes just disappears from school. For how long always changes, it's never for the same amount, and they'll return like they were never gone.

-> Es cannot be reached outside of school. You have their phone number but they don't respond often and if they do, it's hours after and it's dry as hell. You've given up on texting them.

-> Es doesn't do clubs. They've been constantly recommended to the debate club but they view it as a waste of time. And they would never do a sport. That's for people grasping for an ego.

-> Es really enjoys being your friend. They want to be a little selfish, they don't want this friendship to end when you guys graduate.

Despite her romantic tendencies, you enjoyed passing free time with Mahiru. She never made you feel uncomfortable, and ever since her injuries from her judgement, you’d been walking with her from time to time. Mahiru liked taking walks, but ever since the judgement came, she hated doing so alone- After Kotoko’s attacks, nobody was the same. Everyone was on edge. Even Es.

Today was no exception to your newfound tradition of accompanying her throughout the prison hallways- you were happy to do so with her, and she seemed much more cheerful when she had someone to go with. In your mind, it wasn’t odd at all if she linked arms with you- she was injured, so it was all perfectly normal for her to need a bit of help walking. And you were never bothered by her absentminded flirting- it was in her nature as a hopeless romantic. 

You knew she harbored no feelings for you, since she spent half her time rambling to you about her wonderful boyfriend. That part did concern you, but you decided it’d be best to leave that up to Es to mention. You were fine with it if she hugged you before going back to her cell, or even if she gave you a goodnight kiss on the cheek- it was all completely platonic. Mahiru was grateful for your friendship and your understanding of that fact, but the one thing you failed to realize was how it might look to others.

And lord knows your incapability to notice how a certain person was taking it would get you in all sorts of shit.

“Goodnight, Mappi!” You said, not hesitating to return the gesture when she stood on her toes to hug you. She smiled as she gave you her typical goodnight wishes, reminding you to drink water as she gave her a kiss on the cheek and then hurried back off to her cell. It really didn’t mean anything to you, as you turned on your heel and started absentmindedly strolling back to your own cell- Until, of course, you heard the familiar sound of your cell door creaking open.

You snapped your head up as you heard shuffling fabric, but the dim lighting in your cell didn’t do much to help your god-awful eyesight in figuring out who the fuck was in your cell this late at night. You were already sitting on the low-quality mattress of your cell, just staring dumbfounded in the general direction of the door as you felt a bit of fear settle into your body.

“H…ello……?”

Your voice was quiet as you spoke, slightly afraid- it was past curfew by now, and if Es found someone in your room, they’d get some sort of penalty. Which sucked, because you were actually really chill with every other prisoner and would much prefer to not have any issues.

Your thoughts were interrupted when you heard a voice that was undoubtedly Mikoto’s, as he inched closer and sat down on your bed. “Sweetheart.” His voice was colder than usual, like we was upset, although you were unsure as to why. “C’mere.”

Although you hesitated for a moment, you inched closer to the end of your bed, close enough to him where you could see his face a bit better. He had an almost confused expression on his face, like he couldn’t quite sort his emotions. He glanced at you, eyes softening once they fell on your face.

“What’s the deal with you and Mappi-chan-….?” He asked slowly, staring at you without ever letting his gaze falter. He sounded confused, and maybe a bit upset, but was careful as not to seem accusing.

“Mappi-..? She’s my friend, just like all the other prisoners here..? You know that….?” You ran through what had happened that day in your head, trying to figure out what he was talking about- absentmindedly lifting a hand to your cheek to where Mahiru had given you an innocent little kiss, which was really a terrible decision. The moment you did so, that was all it took for Mikoto to… change.

He narrowed his eyes at you, which made you feel things you probably shouldn’t have in that moment, but you shoved those thoughts away as fast as you could.

“That’s not what it seemed like.” His voice was noticeably deeper, and sounded gravelly as he spoke, his tone of voice changing dramatically. He reached forward, grabbing your hand to bring it away from where your fingers where still gently tracing the spot Mahiru had kissed you.

Suddenly, everything caught up to you.

You felt your face flush a deep shade of violent red as he stared down at you, some emotion in his eyes you couldn’t quite get a good grip on when he was staring at you so intently like that. He didn’t say anything, just watched you as your breath and heart rate started picking up.

“You… know you’re mine, right..?” He asked, voice low as he spoke. You nodded shakily, not really being able to say anything.

Talking to Mikoto was one thing. But talking to… him? You knew he was different right now, and whenever he was like this, the tension got almost suffocatingly high.

“Then I should be the only one to kiss you.” He huffed, almost sounding pouty.

You breathed out a barely audible “That makes sense.” as your eyes started to wander, now barely able to control the rapid speed at which your heart was beating.

He stared at you as the room fell back into silence for a moment, just… watching you. Watching the way you got fidgety under his gaze, watched the way you took quick breaths, watched the way your eyes darted from place to place through the room, meeting his every now and then before darting away again in your rush of jumbled emotions.

Well, there was no turning back now, right?

After making his decision, he wasted no time in placing his hand firmly on the back of your neck, which sent your eyes straight back to him as he leaned in. His lips were soft, although they pressed against yours with unimagined fervor as he pulled you closer.

You felt your arms wrap around his neck as you gave in to the way he kissed you, almost greedily, one arm settling around your waist to support you. His eyes fluttered shut as he continued needily pressing himself against you, letting out some sort of muffled sound through the kiss. The moment your lips parted, you feel his tongue darting out, and your mind went entirely blank. All you could do in the moment was tighten your grip around him, him doing the same while he pushed you up against the wall. You could barely breathe with him against you like this, but you were still trying to pull him closer as your blush intensified so much it was a wonder it didn’t burn you.

He pulled away for just a moment, only long enough to breathe out the word ‘mine’ before leaning back in. His hand on your neck slowly moved up to your hair, ruffling through it in a way that was almost calming.

You weren’t quite sure how far this would go with the way he was holding onto you, but all your racing thoughts were cut short as you felt a flashlight, bright against your face.

“Hey, it’s past curfe—-“

A long silence, omitting the slight panting that came from the man who was now just hovering over you.

“God fucking damnit.” Annoyance was evident in Es’s voice as he simply glared at you. “You would think that in prison people would be able to control themselves, but noooo. Fucking hate this job.”

As you fumbled your walking you kept on hitting the wall from time to time. Every single prisoner saw you hit the wall and got a little concerned for your state.

Mahiru helped you walk but you insist that you could walk on your own, then nearly fell down to the floor. Your eyebags were definitely visible, it worried mahiru so much that she brought 10 heating packs that she requested from es.

Shidou himself got worried too, he tried to check if you had anything bad but it turned out you were completely fine! If anything you were just a 'little' clumsy.

And finally, Es. Es was the most worried out of all of them. Not that you matter the most out of all of them, but if you keep bumping your head multiple times you might start forgetting about your own murder!

When Es interrogated you in the first trial, you always had your eyelids half open and Es would always snap their fingers to wake you up. You always end up apologizing though, so maybe it's okay.

But they wish that you took your crime a little more serious, considering how laid back you were, Es have always thought that you didn't feel guilty at all.

But maybe they were just over reacting. Sure you always (accidentay) hit your head really hard on the table or trip every once in a while, but you still tried to reassure people that you were okay.

Everyone has gotten used to it and let you do your own thing, but Es was still always worried every time you fell. Kotoko pointed out how Es had 'favourites' then looked at you for a good minute.

Es denied her comment and told her how they take care of each and every prisoner equally with no favourites whatsoever.

Sure they've helped you lead your way while holding your hand so that you were okay once, but that was only because you had a bruise on your left leg. And if you fell again you might even get an even worse bruise than before.

And that time they hugged you when you started shaking during their interrogation with you? That was just so they could calm your mind down and get an easier video to observe.

Es doesn't have 'favourites'. Only people who weren't favourites during their life are the ones who would have 'favourites'. That's absurd, Es would never do such a thing.

Es might not know you autistic until you tell him or Shidou does, and definitely not Jackalope that rabbit probably didn't know until Es told him

As for how they act, Es will try his best to use more simple words, to you in case you don't understand them, they genuinely want to communicate with you correctly

That especially goes if you are a prisoner, Es wants you to understand them correctly, so they can understand why you are in Milgram, and if they want to vote you innocent

Es is decently patient but they aren't sometimes, they are more patient with you so you can tell them everything at your own pace, and Es will try to follow you pace too

Es would secretly ask you to tell them every interaction you have with other prisoners, why? So they won't manipulate you since autistic people are easily manipulated(not all of course)

Es isn't really sarcastic, and even if sometimes they say something they didn't mean, they will tell you their joking after that though as I said, that rarely happens

Now if you have vocal stims, Es will make sure you won't mask them but slowly of course, by for example repeating them with you so you feel safe

Es wants to learn what sets you off so, it won't happen (if you ask they might ask Jackalope to get you some fidgets, they will still do it later if you won't ask)

And if your vocal stim happened because Es did something, They will try to do it again just for you to be happy or say something if that's the reason

Es will also like spending time with you, and listening to your rants about your favourite subjects, they're genuinely interested(also Es will definitely have the love look)

And because of the ranting part everyone will suspect that Es has a crush on you, will they agree? No will they confess to you? Yes

Es will be in denial, telling themselves that you are a prisoner and they are a prison guard so they can't love you, it will probably take them a little bit of time to just say "Fuck it I'm just in love" and confess

Also Es will probably accidentally make you, think they don't like you because they are just standing there mumbling to themselves about what if they say something wrong

Anyway once you are dating Es, his soft spot isn't shown around others only in private

Es is decently clingy, they enjoy hugs and kisses after they had an interrogation, because honestly those prisoners make them lose sanity

As for pet names, Es doesn't use them around others but in private they will use some but mostly "love" with extra gentlest "Well it's time for the interrogation how are you feeling my love?"

Es will make sure to ask if the material on your uniform is fine, if not they will ask Jackalope if there's a chance to get you a new one with a material you will like

Es will gladly become your personal translator/they need to when Shidou isn't around but even if they do, they don't mind doing it

If something exciting happened for example you were voted innocent, Es will not mind you grabbing their hands and start jumping around with happiness, they will be really happy since you are happy

Es will do research on autism but also ask you about it, since not everyone has the same traits

As for the voting part, Es will try to vote fairly but put the fact they learn about autism In case it's a big part of the reason you here

If Es is in between what to vote, they will vote you innocent, you being their partner breaks the tie + Es think is adorable when you get excited for being voted innocent

Now if you get voted guilty, Es would either 1. Act more cold just a little bit though or 2.talk to you about it to find out more about it, it mainly depends on how long you were in a relationship and which trial it is

Even if they were to act cold, Es would be worried once he sees you being beaten up by Kotoko and would immediately hug you

Honestly Es doesn't change much with autistic reader but still tries to be more soft towards them+ look after them

“Aren’t you a little baby?”:

They would spot the cat during one of their walks and automatically run up to them, cooing over how cute the cat is. They would also take a lot of pictures while the cat just keeps meowing.

Target spotted. Cat petting activation mode on. They would gently reach over and let the cat sniff their hand, keeping a calm expression. When the cat rubs against their hand, they swore they could have died in that moment. “You’re so cute! And soft….”

“Why hello there kitty. I must say that I have no food for you right now. Today is a nice day, isn’t it? Where is your home?” They continues the one sided conversation as if the cat was actually saying something. They read the cat’s movements as the cat meowed back conversationally.

Responds in cat language:

“Meow?” The cat said.

“Meow meow!” They replied with such a look of contentment on their face. They talked to the cat so much, it would look like they actually know cat language.

“Oi! What’s a lowlife like you doing here in my way, huh?” They would tower over the car, making the cat hiss and back away slowly. They would just keep their arms crossed as a satisfied look appeared on their face.

Es x Prisoner!Reader (GENDER NEUTRAL)

“Don’t expect much from this place. It’s a prison.” The warden’s footsteps flood the dimly lit corridors, a rabbit-like creature following at his side. “You no longer have the right to freedom, you’ll be caged up just like everyone else.” Keys jingle as a creaky metal gate opens, pressure pushes against your back as you feel like you’re falling into nothing, the last thing you see is their face.

That’s all you remember. Well, until the blinding lights awaken you, and there they are, the warden, towering over you as everything starts to make sense.

You’re stuck here now. No matter what you do, you can’t leave.

Es gently holds your face as they rub under your eyes, gently shaking your arm while whispering. Your eyes slowly open as you recognize their face.

“They’re up, be gentle with them or I’ll deal with you myself.”

They stand up, glancing at you before leaving the room, the sound of their footsteps echoing the room before the door slams shut.

“So you’re the new prisoner, huh? I’m Kashiki Yuno, it’s nice to meet you!”

She extends her hand out to you, helping you up as it seems as if everyone’s eyes are on you.

“Thank you, Yuno.”

“Of course! This is Kazui, we’ll be around if you need us!”

The man nods, following behind her as they leave.

You can’t tell how long you’ve been here after a while, days blend together and turn into what feels like months or years. You get along with the other prisoners fairly well, although since the first trial Kotoko’s become violent, Yuno’s become less social, Amane seems to hate Shidou now and Fuuta and Mahiru are more battered and bruised than ever, although somehow Mikoto’s fine but besides them, everyone’s changed, including you.

You don’t remember much from your interrogation, although you remember one specific moment. Es holding your face in their hands exactly like they did when they first found you.

“Freedom is a privilege, angel. Even if you’re a prisoner, I’ll do anything to give you that freedom back.”

i've been meaning to write for milgram since i'm big about character pieces and i do love milgram's overall premise. writing about es is pretty challenging for me (but i do love a challenge hihi)

“Try these on for me, I put a lot of hard work into making them so you should be appreciative of it!” You remarked proudly as ES took the garments from you going back into their room to change.

Es came out hunched over as you smiled, taking off their hat and ruffling their hair. “Essie!~ Oh your so cute like this!” Es scoffed, rolling their eyes as they swatted your hand from their hair;

“How many times have I told you not to call me that?”

001 SAKURAI HARUKA

It’d been a few months since you’d given Haruka a piece to wear, you’d been thinking about something to make him when you remembered an idea you had months ago.

“Haruka! C’mere I wanna see something!” You called for the blue haired boy, holding something in the small of your hands; he came into your cell with a small ‘huh’ sounding noise as you placed a blueberry pie themed hat onto his head.

Look! It’s a hat I made! You want it?” You asked gingerly as Haruka pulled the hat from his head flipping it around in his hands.

“Mhm.. can I keep it..? Please..?” He’d look at you with expecting eyes, his brow noticeably tugging upwards as he did his best to hold eye contact.

“Yeah of course! I made it just for you!” You’d grin as you watched his face light up, a wobbly smile on his face as he hugged you. “You're the best [Name]!”

002 YUNO KASHIKI

“‘Nother dress for me [Name]?~” Yuno chuckled as you came into her cell with another dress for her to check out. You’d made fairly simple dresses for Yuno as she seemed like the kind of girl to like simple dresses but this time you wanted to be a bit more extravagant.

“Yep! I think you’ll like this one too!~” You smiled, handing Yuno the crinoline lined dress, it had an iconic cupcake shape and special hand threaded lacing on the front, it complemented her hair color.

She gave you a cheeky grin running away to go try it on; coming out shortly after with her uniform in hand and a large smile on her face as she spun around.

“I might just steal this from you [Name]~”

003 FUUTA KAJIYAMA

Fuuta didn't understand the purpose of you bringing him outfits but as time passed he’d ask you to bring him one every few weeks or months, this time around he had come with a request.

You handed over the bunny sweater watching him pull the large garment over his head as he smiled admiring the feeling of the soft fabric as he felt it through his fingers.

The rough-edged boy seemed dull at that moment, holding your new creation with as much care and delicacy as possible, muttering words of thanks and gratitude as much as he could.

“Thank you.. [Name].. it's fucking amazing..”

004 KUSUNOKI MUU

Muu was never one to ask you for much, she’d never really talk to you either, Muu had been simple and timid when it came to your ability to make clothing for her she wanted to make your life a little bit easier.

She explained the concept of a yellow chiffon-like dress which she had thought about before not knowing how to make or get one.

Reluctantly you made it for her, adding long droopy sleeves and slimmed boning, finally, you handed it over to her the expression on her face reading of both shock and happiness.

005 KIRISAKI SHIDOU

He’d seen your work with Mahiru and Fuuta, so much so that he wanted to get something from you as well.

You’d look over to the purple patterned fabric lord knows how many times as you stitched it to the inner side of the coat, sighing deeply as your fingers held the needle tightly.

You questioned your ability as you gripped the fabric, feeling your shoulder become warmer with a tight yet soft grip.

“The coat looks good.. I can't wait to see the finished product.”

006 SHIINA MAHIRU

Mahiru had always been fashionable, looking so dolled up even in her prison uniform. Now Mahiru cuddles up to you while you make her a new dress.

“This fabric is so much cuter than this one.. oh! But this one is so much softer!”

She doted over the fabrics you'd placed in front of her as she felt the difference between them.

“[Name]!~ Help me pick out one of these!~” She’d squeal as she hugged your shoulders playfully, nuzzling her face into the crook of your neck as she smiled at you.

008 MOMOSE AMANE

Throughout your time knowing Amane she had never once asked you for anything large, majority of the time the only thing she'd ask of you was just if you could patch up the uniform they supplied her.

Amane seemed to be working with her impulses today instead of usually working against them, coming up to you requesting a green and blue dress.

As to your surprise she wanted to watch you make her dress, not only that but she wanted to be actively involved in it as well, even going as far to ask for large changes throughout the process.

Horror movies weren’t exactly your forte- you could withstand them, and you wouldn’t be loosing sleep over some cheesy plotline- but in the moment, you knew full well you were weak to jumpscares. But tonight you were watching a movie with the other prisoners too, which meant you were ready to take every measure necessary in order to not make a fool of yourself in front of the others. 

After at least 20 minutes of wasted time with everyone scrambling about to get settled under layered and fluffy blankets, most everyone seemed comfy and content with their spots, except for Amane, who had adamantly insisted that she would not be partaking in the movie. You yourself were covered in blanket upon blanket, so much so that it was almost hard to see you underneath them, next to Mikoto, who had a bowl of popcorn propped carefully on his legs. His eyes were narrow and harsh, and he was mostly silent, a general sign that it wasn’t exactly Mikoto, but rather… the other Mikoto.

You had discussed the topic of Mikoto’s… other versions with Es multiple times, but as close as they ever came to caving and giving you more information, they simply shook their head and muttered that they couldn’t help you. And you couldn’t blame them- as prison guard, it was no surprise they weren’t able to tell you the details of the situation.

You let out a quiet sigh as a hush fell over the other prisoners, the screen illuminating itself as the movie started up. It stayed mostly quiet throughout the room, save the occasional whine from Fuuta about how unrealistic the special effects were (despite the fact that he had a death grip on his blanket). 

It was a basic horror movie plot, completely predictable, and, yes, the special effects were shitty- what you would expect from a movie night in prison, although you could still feel the way you got uneasy any time it fell too silent. Every now and then, it would go completely silent on screen, the protagonist walking into a trap so obvious it almost bothered you how stupid they were. An obvious setup for a jumpscare.

You knew it was coming, but at the same time, you were absolute shit at preparing yourself for it.

The moment you heard the noise, you jumped noticeably high, letting out a squeak that was thankfully hidden by Fuuta’s much louder yelp. Instinctively, you reached out to grab whatever was closest and most convenient, since usually, at home, this object would be your precious Ikea shark- but, alas, as fate had it, you did not end up wrapping your arms around a Blahaj, but Mikoto’s arm. 

Shame that felt even worse than being jumpscared settled over your entire body, and you felt your face flush red as you prayed desperately that nobody else had noticed. You watched for any sort of reaction from the man beside you, but he didn’t flinch, or even let his gaze waver from the screen. Shakily, you turned your head back to the screen, although you felt it was far too awkward to try and move now. You felt your body slowly calming down, heart rate going back to normal as your racing mind slowed…

Until you felt a slight shift, and in some sort of response to the way you’d jumped onto him, Mikoto wrapped an arm around your waist and pulled you up against him. He was subtle about it, making sure not to make any sudden movements in hopes of nobody realizing. Once you were secure against his chest, he placed a hand in your head and you leaned onto his shoulder a bit. Your nerves were going crazy from the sudden intimacy, but you couldn’t deny that it was nicer.

Part of you wanted to ask Mikoto what he did that for, but his mood was much more fickle when he was different like this, and you knew that if you brought attention to the two of you in a position like that, Mahiru would never let you hear the end of it.

You just stayed, sitting against him like that, practically overflowing with warmth, struggling to pay attention to the movie at all any more. You felt another jumpscare building up, but in the back of your mind, you couldn’t really react in time.

But he did.

His grip on you tightened the moment anything popped up on the screen, and as the night progressed, he continued to behave like this, glancing over at you every so often to make sure you weren’t too scared. The way he held you so carefully, you could almost mistake it as him wanting to protect you-

As you pondered around the ballroom, you spot someone that was around your age. They had grey hair and greyish blue eyes, and looked pretty short.

You walked up to them and briefly introduce yourself, startling them a bit. You apologized and asked how old they were, they looked at you weird before you reassured them that you were (maybe) the same age.

They looked at you weird (again) before sighing and telling you what age they were. Your guess was correct and they were around the same age as you!

You held both of their hand out of joy and also cried tears out of joy, while they looked at you with doubt in their mind. You invited them to walk around the garden, leaning closer than you should have.

They stepped back a bit and hesitated, before agreeing to your offer. You squeal in excimenet as they covered your mouth to lower down your voice.

You realized you haven't asked for their name. When asked, they were quiet for a but, before answering. ".. Es. Es is fine." That name sounded familiar to you but it didn't matter now.

You had a friend who was finally around the same age as you! How awesome is that! You smile and take their hand, leading them to the garden of flowers that you so adore.

Es was out of your perspective, but they were a little glad because of it. If you ever saw them smiling at you, you would've definitely teased them for it.

A few months have passed by and both you and Es have grown fond of each other. The two of you were nearly inseparable if anything! Sure there are ups and downs but you both always find a way to make up.

And somehow, Es is a lot more affectionate than you are! Which shocked you at first. Es would always hug you from behind or suddenly hold your hand out of nowhere.

Then they would randomly say "you're the best thing to ever happen to me." Then walk off and pretends it never happened. These kind of things always makes you a little flustered.

So imagine your surprise when you asked Es why they've become more affectionate these past few months, then get hugged by them.

"I don't know. It just felt right." They let go of the hug and held your hand.

"Come on. You said you wanted to check out the garden today." They smiled at you, before dragging you to the garden while laughing quietly.

Time to take the idea that Kazui knew he was lying to his spouse from the beginning out back and put it down. Surprisingly not with my feelings but hard evidence and statements Milgram has been making about Kazui's crime/sin from the beginning.

Coming from someone who doesn't even think his crime is a result of divorce in general but actual murder just like I do with all the prisoners.

Yet, I'm not going to unpack that anytime soon. Simply because certain logic to justify voting him guilty based on the idea that his honesty led his ex to taking their own life is pissing me off. Also, because it's funny to me that no one else has figured out what he did yet when it's incredibly obvious to me.

Okay well, how do we know that Kazui was not lying when he married his wife initially? Despite him visually showing some misgivings around it in Cat.

Simple all of Half tells us so with lyrics such as,

"The curse of reuniting with you puts a dagger in my heart. I imagined that you saying, "See you" is the same as "It's over”. Only if your heart would change but that’s not possible. Please, tell me what I should do, my heart will float away and disappear."

Through a beautiful thing called being an active reader we can learn a lot from the lyrics in all the Milgram characters' songs. As those themselves are a form of storytelling.

However, only if one is so inclined to. Active reading and one's ability to do so are heavily impacted by the biases one already holds or how averse to the material being discussed one is. The relationship between active reading and bias has been noted many times before.

It's been stated that actively reading or engaging with material of any kind is a good way to have individuals of any age confront their personal biases but it can also reinforce those biases as well.

Bias not only impacts how one interacts with reading, but most communications related concepts.

A timely example in this case would be how if one already has an aversion to hearing about lgbtqia individuals coming out and divorcing their spouses or in Es' case as stated in the voice drama have a,

It’s a personal dislike of mine. People who act based on their sexual urges like that, that is.

"It’s personal?"

Yeah. That’s right.

"That’s strange. I did think that, despite being neutral as a Warden, you had some things you dislike, but…"

An individual with those preconceived biases is already not going to engage in the text fully simply because it's something they dislike.

The first step to reinforcing a preconceived bias is dismissing or trying to cover up the fact a bias exists. An example of this,

"I don't think people should compare Kazui's case to any of the other prisoners actually because those to me are different things."

Active readers and listeners rightfully should interrogate this statement by asking and trying to conceive why this case is different.

Not just when it comes to the audience's perception but when it comes to Es as a character who states their personal dislike of those who act on their sexual urges.

Why is Es stating this when it comes to Kazui but not Yuno?

"The result of doing looooots of sugar-daddying: …abortion."

!

"That’s probably my murder. Well, please go ahead and partake of the truth."

…

"How is it? Satisfied? Then, can we be done already?"

Yuno…you….

"You don’t surprise much, do you? As I thought, you knew it from the song extraction."

Well, yes. As one possibility, I thought it was likely. That, going by Milgram’s scope of interpretation for murder, it was possible.

Could it be because,

1.Yuno was doing what she did not just for sexual gratification but monetary gain as well?

Despite Yuno stating-

Trial 1 Voice Drama

"For example, news outlets. They always make a big fuss about adultery, inappropriate comments, immodesty and so on, right? then they start criticizing the people who make an appearance there. Don't you think it's so ridiculous? There's no end to how much other people punish one another outside of the law."

Umbilical

"Just the two of us I finally found it. The lies are endless."

Trial 2 Voice Drama

"Hm…well then, should I tell you what I heard the voices saying in my head? “Because she’s pitiable.” “There’s no mistake that she has some kind of reason.” “She might have become like this because she had some kind of hardship in her past.” “She’s become like this because there’s some problem in her home life—because she doesn’t know love yet!” “Because of that…I’ll forgive her.”."

It’s true that I arrived at those kinds of analogical reasonings.

"Ah, yes yes. Well, this is going to be purely—purely—personal opinion but…I find those kinds of assumptions preachy and unpleasant! They’re worthless! Arbitrarily deciding that I’m pitiable. Arbitrarily making up a backstory for me. Creating a personally idealized version of me. Creating an acceptable version of me. They really exist, you know, those kinds of people. And in particular, those kinds of people…won’t do anything for me."

Yuno….

"I’m not pitiable. My family gets along super well. And I’m not particularly struggling for money. I decided, of my own free will, to do it because I felt that it was necessary for me."

So, reason one doesn't make sense. Because any active listener would have heard what Yuno was saying taken the message in then gone, I hear you our assumptions were wrong and have caused clear emotional harm to the point of upset. Instead, Yuno's views and statements on her own life were completely ignored in favor of going well she was just reckless or it's her body and choice she has the right to get an abortion. Once more highlighting one acceptable aspect of Yuno and running with it.

2.Is it because Yuno is younger than Kazui making her behavior easier to interpret as general carelessness regardless of what she says on the subject.

"The wanted wanting the wanter. The overlap, isn’t that some sort of perfection? “Poor naive little girl”? So, off the mark, what’s it to you? It’s just absurd. Like really, who do you think you are?"

"I’m the one who chose, let you and you and you all in."

"Hooked up till the morning to this sweet “Umbilical Cable”. Let’s just do it, please smile?"

Hypothetically Yuno's age could easily play into how seriously people take her words on her own experiences. It's easy to simply state she's still young, mistakes happen, and if it's just abortion then that's nothing to punish someone who was only eighteen when they were brought here for. In fact, one could go even further and assert that they think it's bad Milgram is working on the assumption the audience put forward and even alluding to the fact that she could be in here for abortion that's kind of small minded and says a lot about the writer's views.

Yet, again, active reading and listening would inform anyone this is not the case from the beginning Milgram said,

"If you forgive this sin you’re as good as an accomplice." - "If you say INNOCENT, you’re complicit and weak."

We learn in trial two that the prisoners can hear what we are saying about them. Meaning any defense of a character's actions created by fans can be heard and used by the cast to make themselves look more innocent.

The audience has been discussed or directly spoken to by characters many times over the course of trial two. Something that's been ignored simply because confirmation bias is something that can blind people from the truth of the matter or be used to manipulate others or circumstances. Simply put, the best way to get someone to agree with you is by telling them what they already want to hear or showing them what they already want to see.

This is why in I Love You Mahiru's boyfriend's body is put front and center from the start and despite how Yuno expressed the information she had an abortion it was easily accepted as fact. So, Yuno being young could very well play into how she was treated in comparison to Kazui even though she expressly admits to acting on sexual urges as well as romantic ones.

"I feel the emptiness inside me. We agreed to seek each other, I wish we could do something about it. Future." - "My cord’s being pulled but nothing’s ever enough. Contractual desires, oh what to do. FUTURE."

3.She's a girl.

Yuno not only being young but a girl makes it likely for people of all genders to not take her statements on her situation seriously or at face value. No matter how she delivers the information coldly or warmly it's just more likely to be looked over. For as much as people talk about believing women everyone is rather unlikely to do it when a woman is telling them something they don't want to hear.

Yuno brings this concept to the forefront in her first trial interrogation expressly talking about how these types of people don't do anything for her.

"That’s right- You know those sorts of people who just want to convince themselves; so, they stick their nose into the affairs of others knowing it’s not their place? I despise those sorts of people the most. They’re only getting involved to make themselves feel better, right? In the end they never actually accomplish anything."

Yuno…

“No matter how many chilling memories I had to endure, those people never gave me any warmth. He-he I ended up going off topic there! Um, what did I wanna say again?”

On top of reiterating it in her second,

"Arbitrarily deciding that I’m pitiable. Arbitrarily making up a backstory for me. Creating a personally idealized version of me. Creating an acceptable version of me. They really exist, you know, those kinds of people. And in particular, those kinds of people…won’t do anything for me."

Something that has caused her continual upset to the point where she seemingly projects her personal feelings and issues onto someone who appears to be or who she thinks should be more troubled than she is.

Amane: What is it… Kashiki Yuno. Don't go out of your way to sit close to me. Go away.

Yuno: It's a shame you've started feeling that way. But Mahiru's finally fallen asleep. Have a chat with me while I have a break. Oh hey, on the subject, Amane do you think it would be better to have not been born? I'm lucky I can still sort of have a good time, but it seems you're more troubled. I wonder, what do you think?

Amane: I don't think so. To be born into this world is the first miracle and should be rejoiced. No matter how much suffering comes afterwards it won't lose it's value.

Yuno: Hmm, well, happy birthday, I'm not sure how to put it, but I'm glad you were born safely.

So, that's a bit of what being an active reader and listener can tell a person. So, how would that apply to Half. Well let's go back to the lyric from the beginning.

"The curse of reuniting with you puts a dagger in my heart. I imagined that you saying, "See you" is the same as "It's over”. Only if your heart would change but that’s not possible. Please, tell me what I should do, my heart will float away and disappear."

the line the curse of reuniting tells us that Kazui has reunited with someone. So, there's someone he hasn't seen in a while that just reentered his life. However, their reunion is causing him nothing but turmoil as it's described as putting a dagger in his heart. So, they may not have left off on the best of terms from his perspective or there are things he regrets about the relationship.

This is expanded on further through the lyric "I imagined that you saying, "See you" is the same as "It's over"." implying the unsteadiness of this relationship. Kazui internalizing that this person saying see you a term that usually means you will see each other again at a later time as a "It's over" something that one usually says when they don't plan to meet with another person again.

This uncertainty around the term probably being related to how often this individual comes in and disappears from his life. Something also alluded to by the lyric, "My heart will float away and disappear."

These are all things that would not be a concern if he was in a committed relationship with the person being referred to. Someone we're shown him being around on the daily basis throughout Half and cat. These lines are also sung far before we ever see his wife take the stage. Alluding to the idea that the relationhsip being discussed predates the one he is in now.

This is something supported by the number cards in Cat as well.

Something that highlights the order in which events took place. The first one being him realizing the futility but not being able to stop dreaming, the second him acting on that dream and after that crushing his love and lying until it gets better. All showcases that he confessed to someone else before his wife and was attempting to move on after how that worked out.

Being a rebound to some won't make it any better but people move on from relationships in their own ways and that's far cry from just lying to someone straight up about liking them. Again something that from the beginning is implied to have not been the case through the lyrics of Half.

"If I were to make sure and suffer, I would rather be by your side. Laughing together, side by side, this distance in our relationship is misleading me, is this what happiness is? Where did I go wrong, probably from the beginning."

A line again said before we ever even see his wife on screen. He is however wearing his ring during the bar scenes. So, he's married at the time those took place. Hell if he's even actually married again this isn't information Kazui just admits in his voice drama Es states he is and Kazui just agrees to the statement.

In a voice drama where we were expressly told several times throughout the beginning of Milgram prisoners can lie in. Where he also says this-

"Would you stop just punching me in the face without hesitation? … Anyways… that’s how it is, huh? That’s how it is…?"

Hah?

"I didn’t even consider this a possibility… Personal impressions sure can be scary."

Then says this,

"Hahaha! But you know what? You’re wrong."

…? What are you talking about?

"You’re wrong."

…

"You said I was unfaithful – in other words, that I cheated or committed adultery of some kind."

Yeah. That’s what I deduced from your footage.

"It’s not true. It didn’t even turn into infidelity. It didn’t turn into anything like that. For me… In my case, you see."

All far before the idea of him being a married man comes up. Even when it does Es just asks Kazui to confirm an assumption that they and the audience made-

… You’re married… You’re a married man, aren’t you?

"Hm? Yeah, that’s right. Oh, right, I never told you, did I?"

You’ve taken off your ring.

"… Right… I did take it off, huh. Right…"

Yeah.

"Mh. … I do carry it with me, though. See? – I was forgiven. My feelings were validated. So… maybe that means that I don’t have to do this anymore? Thanks to that, I was feeling better when the second trial started… I really do feel sorry about that. Towards my wife."

During all of Kazui's second interrogation he's waiting patiently to figure out what we know so he can gauge how he should react. Jackalope didn't know how Kazui was reacting because Kazui to his own admission doesn't react to anything before knowing all the facts of a situation.

Futa: Old man, don’t just laze around so carefree like that. Haven’t you thought about how to break out from here? With your physique, you can probably take out the guard and escape, right?

Kazui: Ahh…… Ok, let’s put it this way. You got caught up in a bank robbery, and the culprit has blocked off the police. From a glance, they look pretty weak, and don’t seem to be holding any weapons. Would you try to arrest them yourself?

Futa: ……if it looked like I’d be able to, then I would. You said they’re weak and don’t have any weapons, right? Everyone else in the building’s life is on the line. Those who can fight should fight.

Kazui: Haha, I wouldn’t recommend that. Even if they look weak, they might actually be a lot stronger. They might have an accomplice hiding somewhere. And they might not look like they have a weapon, but could easily be hiding a gun. ……you shouldn’t act until you have absolute confidence in your assessment. So, for now I’m going to sit back and assess the situation. And on that note, I’m off for a smoke~

So, until he confirmed these beliefs for himself why would he show his feelings about them? This is something that's been consistently shown about Kazui from the beginning. That will be the only hint you're getting from me at what I think is actually going on here.

Back on track-

Throughout Half we are given lyrics that allude to Kazui not knowing his true feelings as well.

"I could try you, and also try to touch you but you probably won’t notice. I understand that this love is out of bounds, so nothing has to change. All these memories and you only if I could erase them. All this time till now has hurt me, the scales of my heart has decided to sway. If continuing to hide is called unhappiness, not even one word will get to you."

I could try emphasizing his urge to test this tenuous relationship he has but the futility of doing so because the other person won't notice. They'll probably laugh it off as a joke and the relationship would stay the same as it's always been.

"Er, so…… could you listen to what I say without laughing? I……"

Something that Kazui has been complicit in understanding that this love is out of bounds so nothing really has to change but still wishing to erase not only these memories but this person from his life. Because this back and forth, this misleading distance between him and this person, all of it for all this time, has hurt him.

However, if continuing to hide is only called unhappiness for himself then maybe it's fine to keep lying or better for no one else to ever know.

Trial 2 Voice Drama

"That’s ridiculous. If you can save someone by telling a lie, that’s what you should do."

Later in

"I’ve confided in others. I’ve tried to be myself! I’ve tried to just be the way I was born!"

…Hey, Kazui–

"It’s not my lies that killed her. She’s dead because I stopped lying to her! If I had just kept lying- She wouldn’t have died…!"

If the truth is what will end up hurting those who are already happy then is telling it really the most important thing to do in that moment.

Is it more forgivable to tell a truth that gets other killed or to keep lying to avoid unnecessary losses is the question Kazui's second trial interrogation posits throughout its entirety. If Kazui is being voted guilty for simply lying then everyone within Milgram now and throughout society are guilty of that sin.

Lying is wrong and one can hate the contents or circumstances around a lie but lying isn't up there with murder to me personally. Especially if once, he discovered he was lying not only to others but himself as well he decided to be honest about it instead of continuing to lie.

Something implied throughout both Half and Cat,

"So many things I wish I hadn't known, I'm just a coward. What I gave up a long time ago, why is it questioning me now? So many things that I should now have known, I'm just a coward."

Kazui states that there's something he wishes he hadn't known something that implies he's discovered it. Before questioning why something he gave up long ago is back questioning him again. Ultimately stating there were so many things he should have known something that "implies" a term I am using very loosely here because it'd be more accurate to say admits there was something he didn't know up until this point.

"I imagined that you saying, "See you" is the same as "It's over”. Only if your heart would change but that’s not possible."

"I could try you, and also try to touch you but you probably won’t notice."

All this to me gives off the impression that he was not intentionally being dishonest from the start but instead burying his feelings deep down in a haphazard and careless attempt to move on from troubling emotions. Something I can admit is still bad, but many people have gotten into rebound relationships, and honestly, using he lied as a basis for a guilty verdict in Milgram is just funny logic to me. Because everyone in this prison is a liar and has lied, so I'm really curious to hear how this lie is worse than these.

Mu stating that her crime was self-defense despite the position of the body in It's Not My Fault and how she attacked the party in After Pain both alluding to it not being that.

Futa claiming at the beginning of Milgram during his first written interrogation that he didn't kill anyone and then blatantly admitting he did in his second trial written interrogation.

Mahiru pretending to be stupider than she is based on hard evidence collected over the course of This Is How To Be In Love With You. Along with her own admissions in her second trial written interrogation,

Like I could go on and on about the lies told by every character here even Kazui's. They truly are as Yuno puts it endless. The difference is no other character has been voted Guilty on the basis of lying alone and not the ya know whole murder thing. So, this comes off as disingenuous to me and people really need to stop using the suffering of victims to push forward their own agendas when just saying you dislike the guy is right there and a perfectly reasonable and more preferable option in my opinion.

Because the people doing this aren't using actual logic they're just basing everything off their feelings and cherry-picking information that best fits with that. Something that is again totally fine but like don't pretend to be being reasonable with it or like one is saying something in the interest of the victim or for the benefit of divorcees.

eleventh: one more interrogation

eleventh prisoner series tw/cw: fighting, verbal abuse from es

"now. let's begin the interrogation, prisoner number eleven."

"you talkin to me?"

es sighed, rubbing their hand on their forehead.

"look around you. there's no one else here but you."

"but you're here. wouldn't it make sense to not exclude yourself? what is this place anyway? when can i leave? am i gonna be allowed to leave?"

"god can you shut up?"

es grows frustrated. after finishing interrogation after interrogation, they thought they finished with kotoko, and there just had to be another one.

prisoner eleven, on the other hand, looks quite content with the annoyance they caused. a sly smile grows on their face, not going unnoticed by es.

"keep smiling like that and i'm gonna beat your goddamn face until you can't."

the prisoner holds their hands up, maintaining a less than friendly smile.

"woah woah woah. no need for violence."

"huh? violence? you of all people. violence? from what jackalope told me, you're the worst out of all of them. we'll get to that later. anyways, milgram exists to-"

"to reveal the sins of you. whatever. heard it all."

"huh?"

"someone as smart as you should be able to figure it out. knowing what jackalope told you too."

es walks up to the eleventh prisoner and slams them down to the floor. their hand remains on the prisoner's body, knee and foot digging into their back.

"fuck. you got a problem or something?"

"do you have a problem? because i think you do. eavesdropping on the other prisoners' conversations. what reason would you have? you're just the same as them, if not, worse. only i can judge them."

"who says i'm gonna judge them too? i just wanna... learn about the other prisoners. we're all here anyways. might as well get to know them... deeper."

"i'm gonna wipe that shit eating grin off your face. keep pissing me off and we'll have problems."

es gets off the prisoner, but only after they made sure they dug their heel into their body once more. the prisoner groans before stretching and getting back up.

"we will begin our interrogation. prisoner eleven. what is your name and age? how is milgram so far?"

"acting as if you didn't slam me down. ok. i see how it is. whatever. erm. name? just call me whatever. age? guess. milgram so far? it's fun and boring at the same time. i can't really do what i want, but talking to the other prisoners is interesting."

"first off. fuck you. second off. fuck you again. give me direct answers. what do you want to be called? how old are you? don't tell me to guess. i'm interrogating you."

"i'm being serious. call me whatever you want. call me yours, perhaps?"

es gets up to punch the prisoner.

"do NOT fuck with me. i'm not in the mood for your dumb shit. i hope you know that you've caused nothing but trouble for me right now. nothing but trouble for this world actually. it would've been better for someone like you to actually be in a worse place than milgram right now."

albeit harsh, es was trying their best to get the last prisoner to break down. to become more vulnerable. to become more... malleable?

silence ensues, making es look down.

'was i too harsh? it shouldn't matter. they're prisoners. all of them. it's my job to reveal their sins.'

unfortunately for es' sanity, no harsh words went to the prisoner's heart. in fact, those words were taken as words of praise, and love, and affection.

"you really think that? es, you know just what to say to bring the mood up! guess my age! guess! guess! guess what i did while you're at it!"

disgust riddled the guard's face.

"i'm the one interrogating here. don't forget that. but i'll entertain you. sixteen? seventeen?"

"do you really think i look that young? gosh, you're such a sweetheart es! i'm actually..."

es waited. the prisoner was taunting them. they never had the intention to tell. this motherfucker. the guard decides to start ignoring the prisoner's antics. maybe that would get a reaction.

"have any prisoners caught your attention?"

"how rude. ignoring me. again. fine. from what i noticed, some of the prisoners' murders seem somehow related in a way."

es is caught off guard. so the prisoner can be serious.

"and how so?"

"well, when you think about it, yuuta and kotoko had the same intentions fundamentally, did they not? also, a kid who was raised to not believe in medicine and a doctor in the same place? interesting, isn't it?"

prisoner eleven feigned shock while es continues to think. it was quite interesting. perhaps prisoner eleven wasn't as much as a dimwit they originally thought.

"i lied, by the way! or did i? who knows? after all, you did tell haruka that lies could be told. it's just up to you on how you wanna interpret them!"

before es lands a punch on the prisoner's face, the bell rings.

"guess it's time! gotta sing my sins!"

es scoffs, but continues nonetheless, not wanting to deal with this nutjob anymore.

"prisoner number eleven. come now, sing your sins."

as es watches the video, only confusion emerges. what was happening? it was just. static. and the music. muffled.

"nothing came out from the interrogation and the music... this is strange. i don't like this. perhaps this is an error jackalope can fix."

"prisoner eleven, despite the physical and verbal abuse they faced, shows no change in personality. perhaps a guilty sentence would change them...?"
