BEST MODERN FAIRYTALE ADAPTATION! ROUND 1C, MATCH 2 OUT OF 4!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Belle (2021) is based off Beauty and the Beast; No Slipper for Cinderella by Mildred Lawrence is based off Cinderella.
Propaganda Under the Cut:
Belle (2021):
[None Submitted]
No Slipper for Cinderella by Mildred Lawrence:
my feelings on this book are all over the place like. the plot isn't the most substantial as far as Cinderella adaptations go but I do love that the protagonist is a plus size girl who intends on putting her college education before other wants, that was pretty unheard of for the 1960s!

…Okay, this is wild.
In the Lloyd household, Christmas was no small affair, kicking off before Thanksgiving and eventually becoming a year-round experience. In the early days, the groundskeeper of the Green Acres estate in Benedict Canyon was responsible for the tree’s construction starting in October, and would buy several pine trees, wiring the branches together under Harold’s supervision to make one enormous tree that would be the canvas for the family’s ever-growing collection of ornaments. Lloyd and his wife, actress Mildred Davis, and their family would then spend the next two months hanging thousands of ornaments right up until Christmas Eve.

"angel, would you like a refill too?"
princess yn's little hands wrap around either side of her ceramic teapot, pouring imaginary liquid into her white cat's cup. she giggles, conversing with her pet and her toys as she leans her back against the large tree that stood in the middle of her family's large palace garden. the little princess smiles joyfully as she fixes the miniature tiara on her teddy's head, her own one tilting slightly as she moved around. a sudden rustle of leaves from behind her shakes her out of her make-believe tea party, she sighs softly when she hears a pair of feet getting closer to her. they stop for a moment, a shadow appearing over the green grass as the figure hid behind the tree.
"ha~yA! en garde!" the voice of the boy that jumped out in front of her was squeaky and loud, the voice that belonged to none other than the child of the neighbouring kingdom, prince leehan. he stood before her, his fencing uniform on and a small sword made of wood, that pointed straight at the stuffed toy, in his hand. "is this little teddy bear bothering you, yn? if it is, i shall battle him to the death!" the young princess rolls her eyes at her friend's words, not giving him, or his loud actions, much of a reaction as it happened almost every single time. "first of all, teddy is a she. and she's a teddy bear! she's not gonna hurt me, leehan" the prince sighs in defeat, slumping himself down right beside her against the tree. she hands him a cup, filling it up with the imaginary beverage and he thanks her, playing along. "but how am i supposed to protect my princess if no one is harming her?" the boy displays a big pout on his lips, taking a sip of nothing out of the ceramic cup. she giggles, "you're so silly, leehan" yn strokes a hand through her cat's head as it crawls onto her lap. "you promise i can save you from all the bad guys when we grow up, right yn?" leehan's eyes are big and shining, looking straight into her own sparkly ones. "of course! after we get married!" the boy nods quickly at her response, "we are gonna have the best wedding! we can even have an aquarium in our wedding!" the girl laughs at his weird obsession with fishes, "and we can have a chocolate fountain!" he nods again, "and lot's of presents" the prince's eyes are gleaming as he looks into the future, his thoughts shaken when her little hand pushes against his shoulder. "a wedding isn't like a birthday, silly" he frowns, "i know one thing we have to have at our wedding though..." she nods, as if she knew exactly what the boy was thinking. the two little royals turned to each other at the same time, speaking in unison.
"a hundred tier chocolate cake"
the young boy and girl shared a laugh, quieting down for minute to listen to the rustling of falling leaves and the purring of the feline in her lap. "but i really really want something at our wedding" and he turns to face her again, head tilted off to the side to let her know he was listening. "i want to have a billion blue butterflies to fly around when we kiss" the princess says, eyes wandering up to the sky as she smiles at the thought of her dream wedding. the prince blushes slightly, "i like the butterfly thing...but do we really have to kiss?" yn rolls her eyes, slapping his arm, "of course! that's what all adults do!" leehan nods in agreement, "i can't wait to be married" she mimics his head movements,
"me too"
just then, the sound of a bell removes the two children out of their daydreams, the voice of the princess' helper entering into their little ears. "princess yn! prince leehan! oh, there you are..." the young woman's name is mildred, she's been helping with the princess since she was a wee little baby. "mildred!" yn cheered, getting up to give her a hug. the woman gladly returned it, fixing the back of the girl's frock that began to wrinkle up in the process. "are you here to join our afternoon tea?" the princess asked, smiling up at her helper who just shakes her head softly. "no, no. while i'd love to, prince leehan's parents are searching for him. you've got to go home now" she directs the last part of her sentence towards the young boy who was beginning to get up off of the grass. "but why? can't he play a little longer?" the two children shared the same frown, "no, princess. he's got to get home! c'mon, grab your teddies, i'll take angel" the girl obliges, turning to collect all her toys as the woman picked her white cat up from the ground. the boy waited for his princess, politely reaching a hand out for her to take so they could walk together, back into her family's palace.
"oh, there you two are!" edmund, the young man that served the little prince exclaims as the two children came into view. "edmund! my humble servant!" leehan cheered, puffing his chest out to imitate the way heroic king's stood. the man chuckled, grabbing onto the boy's playing sword and greeting the princess as well. "let's go, your majesty and your highness are waiting for you" he says, signalling for them to follow him into the main throne room.
"papa!" yn smiled, running over to the king and the queen. "hey, darling. how was your tea party, hm?" the older man asks, standing tall with a pretty gold crown sat atop his head. "it was fun...but why does leehan have to go home so soon?" she whines, turning to face the rulers of the neighbouring kingdom he had come from. "i'm sorry, princess. leehan has some prince-ly duties to fulfill...he'll come again soon, okay?" the boy's mom spoke sweetly, tapping a cold finger against the little girl's cheek. "okay" she sighed, a frown grazing against her lips. "bye, my princess! i've got hero duties to do!" leehan announces, grabbing onto the girl's hand and pressing a kiss against it. yn rolls her eyes once again, giggling at the feeling.
"bye, my silly prince"
the two royal families finally part ways, the king and queen waving off the other pair as they waltzed away into their limousine and off to their own side of the evenly distributed lands. the queen smiles as she picks her daughter up from where she stood on the palace grounds and into her arms. "mama, you know what?" the young princess asks, grabbing the attention of her father as well. "what is it, darling?" her mother asks, looking at her intently. "leehan and i are gonna get married! and he'll protect me from all the evil bad guys with his diamond sword!" her parents laugh, "is that so?" the king continues their chat, entering the dining room as they did so. "mhm! and! and we'll have a hundred tier chocolate cake!" the princess' parents giggle.
"i can't wait! it'll be the perfect-est wedding ever!"
⋆౨ৎ˚⟡˖
"ugh why'd i sign myself up for this?" princess yn groans, head banging against the long wooden table that sat in one of the many rooms in her palace, the sound and impact causing the old white cat that laid down across from her to jump right off. prince leehan chuckles, moving to hover over her from behind, looking down at the pieces of paper scattered in front of her. "that doesn't look bad at all, love" he says, hands rubbing circles softly against her shoulders. "and besides...you were the one who insisted on hand-written letters for the guests!" his comment makes her roll her eyes, "ugh, i give up! let's just...hire someone to do this along with the other wedding favors" the guy laughs, tightening the grip he had on her shoulders. "i already did that, love. i was just waiting till you gave up, to let you know" her mouth drops opened, turning her head around to face him with narrowed eyes. "you..." yn starts, her eyebrows that were knitted together beginning to soften when she's met with his handsome face. "you know me too well" she sighs, watching as her fiancee smiles, his eyes turning into moon-shaped lines as he did so. a chilling sensation takes over her body when he presses his pink lips against her own ones.
"oh! i'm so sorry to have to ruin this moment, your highness" an old woman interrupts them, entering the room. "no problem, mildred. what's up?" the soon-to-be bride asks, smiling at her helper who's been by her side since she were little. "your gown has arrived for a fitting!" the woman's words make her eyes go wide and she turns to her prince with a joyous look, hastily getting up with excitement. prince leehan waits patiently behind the door, bending down to pet angel on her forehead, only entering the dressing room when he hears a gasp and a squeal of joy. he leans against the door, watching closely as his princess turns around to face him. the boy's mouth hung wide opened, his eyes beginning to gloss up at the sight before him. "wow..." he says, slightly out of breath. he steps towards her, taking her hands in his own. "so beautiful...my princess" she laughs, blushing a little. "thank you...but you know, i'll be your queen soon" he smiles that same smile that makes his eyes disappear into crescent shapes, taking another step closer to kiss her on the lips again.
"oh...i'm about to cry!" mildred's voice rang through the air as she began to tear up. "no, don't! i'll cry as well if you do!" the princess whined, a pout taking over her previous smile. "i swear just a moment ago you two were having an imaginary tea party under the tree...and now...you're getting married!" the royal couple laughs at the old woman's recollection of their childhood, shooting each other happy smiles as the princess wraps her helper into a warm hug.
just then, the familiar face of leehan's own helper enters the room. "your majesty, your presence is requested at the garden...it's for the butterfl-" edmund gets cut off by the prince's loud cough and wide eyes, "yes! i got it, thank you edmund. i'll be there in a second" and he turns over to his fiancee, who wore a curious look on her complexion. "i gotta go check this...this um...thing out. i'll see you tonight, yeah?" he says, holding her hands and looking straight into her eyes. "mhm, and we'll be married tomorrow!" her excitement makes him giggle, "that, we will be. i love you, your highness" leehan says finally, ending his sentence off with a dramatic bow to which yn rolls her eyes, "i love you too, your majesty" he kisses her hand, nodding towards her helper and dressers in the room before they parted ways.
"so...what do we think, your majesty?" prince leehan smiles widely, "it's perfect...i can't wait for her to see this tomorrow!" the boy nods, shaking the hands of the wedding organizer as he thanks him profusely. edmund pats the royal's back softly, "your big day...it's finally coming true, hm?" the butler asks as he and the soon-to-be groom stared off at the garden that was being fixed and decorated for their reception that awaited them in the morning. the boy nods, "i can't believe it..." he says, his voice softening towards the end. "i hope she likes the surprise..." now the prince's voice come out shaky, his nerves suddenly taking over his body. edmund just chuckles, a firm grip placed against his majesty's shoulder. "you're making her biggest dreams come true..."
"i'm sure she'll just love it..."
that night, after sharing a meal with their parents who were ready to give them the responsibility of the throne, the royal couple take a walk alone through one of the many pathways within the castle grounds, taking a moment to be with just each other before their big day.
"i can't wait for tomorrow..." yn says, hands intertwined with leehan's as she looked up at the starry night sky. his eyes are fixed on her, a smile against his lips at the simple sight of the love of his life. "me neither" he says, his voice a bit more quiet than usual, so as to not wake the sleeping horses in the stable they had walked by. "that thing edmund asked you to check in the garden, what was it?" the princess wonders, looking to face him now. the prince stutters softly, not expecting her to bring it up. "um...it's nothing...ugh" he sighs, stopping his feet and grabbing onto her other hand, staring right into her eyes. "what if i say i managed to make your childhood dreams come true?" she furrows her eyebrows, "darling, i've had a thousand different childhood dreams, which one are we talking about?" he chuckles, continuing to walk again. "it's a surprise...but it's something you once told me under the garden tree" the girl's eyebrows remained tied together, racking her brain as she tried to remember every single thing her younger self had told him before.
leehan laughs, moving the hand that was intertwined with hers to wrap his arm around her shoulders and pulling her into his grasp. "don't think about it too much, love" he says, pressing a kiss against her hair that smelled of daisies. "you'll see it in just a few hours, anyways" yn pouts, leaning deeper into his embrace. "i don't know if i can wait that long...especially since we aren't allowed to see each other until the reception tomorrow" the boy nods, "i wish they'd let us sleep together, i don't know if i can even sleep tonight" she continues, and he just listens, the same way he always did when they were kids- when she'd talk her own ear off, allowing his to take in all her words.
they made it back into the palace, sharing one last kiss before they were to separate, forbidden from being with each other until the event that awaits them tomorrow. the biggest event to take place in the kingdom for that month. an event that only happens every few years or so...
the royal wedding.
⋆౨ৎ˚⟡˖
"mildred, i might cry! i've never been this nervous in my life! what if i slip on the floor? what if i accidentally say the wrong words? what if-" the bride is stopped by her helper's hands against the exposed skin of her shoulders. "your highness, yn, it's all gonna be just fine. don't worry too much!" the old woman reassures, earning a worried nod in return from the princess. "excuse me, mildred. do you mind leaving us for a moment?" the sound of the queen's voice spoke from the near the door, the king standing tall beside her. "yes, of course! your highness, your majesty" she nods, bowing down as she leaves the room.
"hi, darling..." the king speaks, making his way over to sit beside his daughter who had slumped herself down on the soft velvet sofa, her mother on the other side of her, and the old white cat purring silently on the floor below them. "how are you feeling, my princess?" the man asks, a hand gently pressed against her shoulder. yn sighs, "i'm most excited for this wedding. it's like my biggest dream coming true..." she trails off, eyes wandering over to the mirror that stood close to where they sat. "but?" the queen asks, stroking a hand through her daughter's hair that got caught against the zipper of her corseted gown. "nothing. i just can't help but be a little nervous, that's all" the royal parents smile softly at their one and only child, her mother shifts slightly before getting up, pulling the bride up with her.
"come to the mirror, i have something for you"
the princess meets with her reflection, smiling adoringly at the most beautiful gown they had gotten custom made to suit her taste. like most wedding dresses, it was white. her shoulders and neck bare as the tulle material of the sleeves fell lightly against her forearms. the corset around her waist tightened to just the right amount so she could still talk without getting out of breath. the skirt of her gown sat atop her petticoat, an abundant amount of fabric layered on top of one another to create a slight train at the very end. her hands had been adorned in a pair of lace gloves, matching the lace hanging off the ends of her bustier. a satin sash in her kingdom's colours wrap around her body and her arms move up to straighten the tiara on her head and she makes eye contact with her mother through the mirror, breathing heavily as she awaits the gift.
the king had gotten off his seat as well, standing right beside his two beloved girls as he watched his wife pull out a shining silver necklace out from the velvet pouch it was previously kept in. "this was my grandmother's...and then my mother's and then mine...and now..." her mother trails off, yn's eyes gleaming at the piece of jewellery that touched against her neck. a cold chain, and in the center an entanglement of metal that encased a single pink gemstone, forming the shape of a heart. "now it's yours" the queen smiles, almost bursting into tears at the sight of her beautiful princess about to be married. "mama..." the bride coos, twirling around to embrace her mother into the warmest of hugs, an arm waving off to the side to invite her father into the moment as well, a loud meow in protest from her pet who seemed to have wanted to be included as well.
"oh...our princess" the king says in between sniffles, "you're going to be an amazing ruler, i just know it" he finishes, earning nods from the now tearful bride. the queen sighs when her eyes make contact with the clock, "we better get to our seats...we'll see you out there, love" she says, giving her daughter one last hug. "c'mon angel, your mother is about to be wedded!" the man says, picking up the feline from the ground. yn smiles, "i love you guys" they shoot her a pair of sweet eyes,
"we love you more, our princess- no, our queen...
good luck out there, we'll be waiting for you"
no longer than thirty minutes more went by, the sound of triumphant cheers coming in from outside the palace walls ringing in the wedding attendees' ears. the guests all rise as per requested by the host, the sound of royal trumpets blasting from each side of the large garden as the groom entered the reception. prince leehan wore a proud smile on his face, bowing and waving as he walked down the carpeted aisle. his tailored suit fit perfectly onto his body, a small handkerchief the same colours as his kingdom's flag peaking out of the tiny pocket near his chest as well as a sash in the same shades crossed over his body from one of his shoulders. the groom's hair was slicked in pomade, neatly tucked behind his ears, his handsome face crystal clear for everyone to see. leehan shakes the hands of his own parents as well as his bride's, standing up straight beside the wedding bearer at the elevated end of the aisle. he sighs nervously, staring at the floor for a second as he awaits his soon-to-be wife.
the loud trumpets were long gone and replaced with the sound of soft piano. he's familiar with the tune for it's a part of the soundtrack of one of her favourite films. the piano duet that victor and emily shared in the corpse bride. he chuckles lightly to himself when he remembers their conversation a while back. as they were watching the movie in his room at his own palace, a smile on the girl's face as she told him how badly she needed the song to play at her dream wedding as she walked down the aisle. the way that it did here now. the sound of the garden's large gates opening caused the boy to look up, a look of awe washing over his face as the beautiful girl he gets to marry today is finally revealed.
princess yn trots slowly behind her two little cousins who scattered a variety of flowers onto the pathway in which she walked. she waves at the guests who's eyes were all locked onto her, a smile growing against her pretty lips as she finally makes it over to him. "wow..." the groom whispers, mouth agape as he stares into his bride's bright eyes, his own ones almost bursting into a billion tears. the girl giggles slightly, a blush beginning to grow against her cheeks. the couple is about to share another laugh at how the garden filled with a sudden silence, the reality of their wedding hitting them hard on their heads like the pitter-pattering of rain against windows, but the sound of the wedding bearer clearing his throat and beginning to speak interrupts their otherwise blissful moment.
"beloved guests! today we celebrate a special day of togetherness. the day we join two kingdoms' hands, and form one! the wedding and coronation of our future rulers..." the man's voice is loud and clear, as if he were speaking into an invisible mic. the pair about to be wedded can't help but stare at each other, their ears threatening to blur out the sounds of their surroundings. "prince leehan and princess yn, please proceed with your vows"
the groom steps forward to pick up both of the princess' hands, staring deeply into her eyes once more before he began to speak. "yn ln...i've known you since that day we met at a royal ball when we were just three years old. for years after that i'd cherish every moment we spent, circling my palace or having tea with your teddy bears under the tree..." the girl can feel the tears trying to escape as she listened intently to his every word. "when we were five i swore to protect you from all the evil that came in your way, sticking up my wooden sword up in the air when we agreed to get married. and here i am now...taking your hands in my own, and asking you to be my wife" he ends his sentence softly, turning for a moment to retrieve the ring from it's cushion that the bearer held. leehan smiles at her once again, trying his best not to cry as he slipped the ring onto her finger.
it was the bride's turn to speak now, though after all of the things he had just said it seemed her vows flew right out of her head. "you know...i grew up having about a dozen new dreams for every second that i stood awake. but within those ever-changing wishes lied one that remained the same, until now." her voice began to shake, she blinks rapidly to prevent any form of liquid to seep out of her eyes. "i've always dreamed of our wedding, the day you would be mine forever. and even though it always felt like it was set in stone, i still can't believe i'm standing here before you. just mere seconds before becoming your wife, for real!" a laugh escapes the groom's lips at the tone of which she spoke, his eyes opening up again as she turns to pick up the second ring that sat on the same cushion. "i love you, kim leehan. thank you for making my dreams come true" her vows come to an end as she, too, slips the ring into his finger. the prince smiles at her, an oddly suspicious look pressed against the features on his face. the princess cocks an eyebrow up in confusion.
"i have one more dream of yours to bring to life"
before she could even question him, the boy turns to nod at the wedding bearer who smiled at him cheerfully. "i officially announce you husband and wife! you may now, kiss the bride!" the man exclaimed, followed by the blow of a loud whistle he had taken out of his cloak. "what?" the girl was cut off as her groom pulled her into his chest, both hands against her face as their lips smashed into each other's. their eyes were closed for a moment, basking into the loving atmosphere before they separated. yn's eyes opened, a gasp escaping her lips at the new scene that surrounded her.
about a thousand blue butterflies had been released, fluttering over the whole garden, decorating the skies of their reception. she turns to face him, the tears just a second away from bursting out of her eyes. "remember..." he says, moving closer to wrap his arms around her waist. "you once told me that something you really really wanted at our wedding..." both their eyes wandered off to the sky, "a billion blue butterflies...i couldn't get a billion, so please make do with the thousand" the boy laughs but yn can't hold it in anymore, a single droplet dripping from the side of her glossy eyes. leehan chuckled, cupping her face and wiping away her tears. "i love you, my queen" and she just smiles, leaning her forehead against his, a butterfly landing against her shoulder.
"i love you too, my king"
the guests all stand up to cheer, as did the residents of the kingdom that still stood crowding the outside of the palace. the parents of the newly wedded couple get up as well, embracing each other and their children in hugs and kisses, joyous at the joining of their families through the young love of their off-springs.
⋆౨ৎ˚⟡˖
the newly weds watched from a corner as their guests continued to dance and drink till the skies got dark, giggling softly as they caught mildred and edmund dancing in tears together across the room. yn shivers slightly, the wind of the evening brushing against her bare shoulders. leehan smiles, taking off the blazer of his suit and gently wrapping it around her. "thank you" she says, leaning her head against his side. "no problem, love" he replies, placing a hand on her back.
"the butterflies were amazing, i can't believe you remembered that" the girl laughs, her gaze now fixed onto angel, who was busy trying to claw at one of the pretty insects. "i'm glad you liked them, they were a pain to organize though" he complains playfully, nuzzling his nose against her hair causing the crown on her head to tilt off to the side. "it's perfect" she says, eyes trailing around to follow the way her guests waltzed around the area. he's doing the same, glancing to the scene and then back at her every now and then. "yeah...." he starts, voice quieting down before picking back up again. "it's missing something though..." leehan says, turning fully to his wife who began to nod along with him, as if she knew exactly what her husband was thinking. and then they opened their mouths at the same time, giggling when the exact same silly sentence left their smiley mouths.
"the hundred tier chocolate cake."
the future king takes his future queen's hand in one of his own, the other one pointing towards the dance floor. "your highness, may i please have this dance?" leehan speaks in a so-called heroic voice, his chest puffed out the same he used to when they played make-believe together as kids. yn giggles, nodding along to her husband's act and playing along with him.
"of course, your majesty"
and they lived happily ever after...
the end.

Pet Shop.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
includes— hawks x reader. minors dni. fluff.
warnings— gn!reader. you and keigo visit a pet shelter to adopt! so cute!
Tumblr media
"What would you think about getting a bird of some kind?"
Walking alongside you beneath the hot of the June sun, Keigo doesn't allow himself to be distracted by the way you tap at your lips, pursed as you think aloud; not for too long, at least.
"You're kidding. Please tell me that was a joke," he whines into your shoulder, mirthful and light to match your satisfied laughter.
When Keigo told you he never had a pet to call his own before, you knew it was about time to take your relationship to the next step. Moving in together months ago was commitment, sure; but you knew bringing a little friend home would be just domestic enough to bite at Keigo's achilles heel, hidden to all but you.
He swats the word family away from creeping up his mind, intent on being completely and utterly normal about this.
The shelter you arrive at is painted a fading shade of steel blue, chips peeling off the sides of the wooden planks; sturdy, but old. Quaint. Though it creaks, the raised porch seems stable enough underfoot, with winding stairs leading down each side. One path leads toward the cobblestone road, another toward a dirt trail you assume is meant for daily walks for dogs. Surrounded by trees and foliage, a little wooden sign by the path reminds, "don't forget your treats and baggies!"
A tinny bell clinks overhead as you both step through the glass door, arm in arm. The door is nearly as creaky as the steps, and just as so, stable enough.
Your eyes meet one half of the elderly couple you quickly figure runs the place; "the better half", she would answer, had you been bold enough to ask.
The woman is tall and speaks like a mouse, a unique match to her stoutly husband. He shouts and startles you from down the hall, over the sound of startled dogs.
"Mildred! The damned bell, someone's at the–"
"Oh, hush, will you," she smoothes down a dusty pink apron as she speaks, trotting her way to the door and pinching the bell to stop its ringing out.
You and Keigo both glance to your left simultaneously when you hear the man grumble in response. He slaps his mop down where the larger dogs paw at metal kennel doors. His voice reminds you of the canines that yelp and bark beside him, you decide; not in an unwelcome way, but in a way that makes your lips quirk with the threat of a smile.
"What can we do you for, darlings," the woman asks.
"We want to adopt," you explain. Keigo shifts on his feet like a child at the way you say we. The way you say adopt.
"We're not sure what we're looking for yet. One suited for apartments, maybe? But we're not picky, as long as they don't tend to chew on..." You glance at the red plumage to your left, then back at her.
The mousy woman eyes the both of you in your youthful excitement, the wide of your doe eyes. She takes a long look of approval at Keigo's golden smile that beams authenticity, even with the slouch of his stance.
"Follow me," she says.
The both of you make your way down the thin hall that seems to stretch on and on, adorned on either side by large plastic windows into cages and habitats. As if to give some privacy, the woman turns her heel as soon as you reach the beginning of the hall's winding carpet.
You catch a look at domesticated animals of all kinds, from the avarage housecat lazing about, to skittish, exotic lizards perched on fake branches.
As you walk, you're able to skim the nametags and descriptions for each critter.
"I'm a family cat with a lot of love to give," one reads.
"Don't tap the glass, or I'll make it the shelter owners' nightmare!" Says another.
While you peruse with each step forward, Keigo's legs suddenly stop at a particularly brazen, sunny yellow cockatiel. It puffs its wings at him with a tilted head— the picture of miniscule dominance, all thirteen inches of it. It hops on its feet as it it were dancing on hot coals, presumably to appear a bit taller than cockatiels are predisposed to be.
Keigo puffs his wingspan back with an audible flap, the tips of his feathers nearly grazing the ceiling. With a regretful squawk, the bird shrinks.
"Kei'! They have ferrets here!"
Once he catches up to you, he places two palms firm on your shoulders, peering over you to get a better look at the two little rascals wrestling below.
"Uh, should we step in, or," Keigo asks with the swish of a hand, watching the tubes of fur scramble over each other with their roughhousing. You kneel to get a closer look, and he quickly follows suit.
"Are they supposed to do be doing that?"
"Yeah! That means they're having fun," you exclaim. "You have to get them in pairs, I've heard. They thrive best with a partner. A lot of people think they can get just one," you hold up a finger, "but if you leave them alone for too long, they get lonely."
Keigo understands. He nods.
While you gleefully watch them play, he rises and takes a step over to a nearby enclosure where two rabbits are having their daily exercise. While the larger one sits and loafs, the smaller seems to be encircling the space with dominance. He leans his arm over the bars, allowing the critter with floppy ears and a patchy coat to hop to his foot and examine his fingers.
"This one kinda looks like you, babe," Keigo calls out over his shoulder, reaching out to smooth the ears down on the thing. By all accounts, a rabbit should cower under the gaze of a hawk, but this one seems to welcome his gentle touch. He tries not dwell on it.
As if on cue to interject his thoughts, the tinny cling of the bell rings and echoes again, causing the dogs to erupt into barks and howls and—
Keigo's ears pick up on a whine.
As if they have a mind of their own, his legs carry him down the hall toward the kennel, past the pristine pelts of alaskan malamutes and german shepards, down toward the edge of the room where the lighting seems to dim.
Curled up near the corner against the concrete, fenced off by a gate, is a rather large, scraggly mutt of a dog. It practically smells of fear, smacking its jaws and keening in its throat.
"Hey, hey, it's okay," he soothes as he crouches down, reaching two fingers through the bars. "It's alright, boy. Not gonna hurt'cha..."
The fellow slowly gets up, collar clinking with its hesitant steps and paws making little pap, paps against the chilled floor. While its head raises to allow its watery eyes to meet the golden gaze reflected back, that tail remains pointed downward.
Keigo blinks down, unmoving save for the tilt of his head; and to the creature, he looks unfamiliarily kind.
He can't get the visual of the caged thing running somewhere lush and green and free out of his head. It sniffs his hand, giving a tentative lick and another whine.
"Let's get you home, yeah?"

Frank Castle x OFC! Abigail Miller
Summary: After his first visit, Frank comes to town more often. As the days go by, him and Abby get closer.
Notes: Still just some good ol' pining for this one folks. It's a slowburn, I'm sorry 😆
But we get way more Frank in this one and some not so pure thoughts. But really... who could have pure thoughts around Frank Castle?
There's also a little nod to Matt Murdock in here 🤭

Part 1 - Masterlist - Part 3
Tumblr media
Two weeks. It had been exactly two weeks since Abby had last seen Frank. Some days she caught herself looking at the door, hoping he would walk through.
Which in itself is really silly. First of all, Mildred said he rarely comes to town, always keeping to himself. Secondly, she had barely talked to him. So why did she think about him?
Well, she had to admit his eyes were kinda pretty. Okay, they were downright beautiful. And thinking about it, his lips were kinda plump and… really kissable.
God, was she really thirsting over a man she barely knew? It really had been too long since she had gotten laid. And how old was he anyway? Definitely older than her, but the beard probably made him look older than he actually was. Abby shakes her head, finishing putting some freshly baked muffins in the display.
Thankfully it’s a slow day, so Abby has lots of time to do some much-needed chores around the store. Browse for new recipes, put the delivered goods in the cooler or storage. Just as she puts the empty boxes away in the backroom, she hears the bell from the door.
“I’ll be there in a sec” she yells cheerfully. When Abby re-enters the store, she sees him. Frank Castle. Well, you know what they say. Speak of the devil and all that. Without thinking, she instantly smooths down the folds of her apron, before she walks towards him.
“Mr. Castle, what can I do for you today?”
“I wanted some more bread. And maybe some cookies too.”
“You came to the right place then.” she smiles softly, hoping he takes no offence by the playful tone to her voice. She walks towards the counter, gesturing to the selection she has, waiting for his order. When he walks closer, she is reminded of just how tall he is. And broad. God, he is broad.
She forces a smile, looking up at Frank with an innocent face, like she didn’t just think about him. “So what tickles your fancy?”
He doesn’t answer, just looks at her with an intense gaze. His eyes trailing down her body and up again, where they once again meet hers. Abby suddenly feels shy, strangely exposed under his gaze.
“Do you have more of that corn loaf?” He asks, his deep voice calm and soft.
Surprised, Abby’s lips quirk up into a smile. Figures he would be a man of habits. “The same bread again, Mr. Castle? You don’t want to try something new?”
“Just call me Frank.”
A sudden warm feeling washes over her at the prospect of getting to know Frank better. It’s not much, but it’s a start.
“I do have one left.” Abby says softly, as she walks to the bread and put it in a bag. As she types the order into the register, Frank just looks at her, studying her quietly. Once she had added the cookies, she looks at him again. Not wanting him to go yet, but still not wanting to push too much, she gestures towards the coffee machine.
“You want a cup of coffee before you go?”
“No.” He says a bit too hard. He frowns quickly before his face turns softer. “No, thank you.”
It’s strange, as if he’s been alone for so long that he’s forgotten how to interact with people. Abby doesn't mind, though, but the thought makes her sad, makes her wonder why he keeps to himself.
He lingers for a moment, looking to the display, before his eyes find hers again. “You don’t have any red velvet cupcakes?”
“No, but I can make you some.” Abby smiles softly, suddenly eyeing an opportunity. “If you leave your number, I can call you when they’re done?“
Frank nods softly, taking one of the notepads on the counter. As he scribbles down his number, Abby notices how small the ballpen is in his hand, how small the notepad is against the other. God, his hands are huge. Just like the rest of him. Before she can stop herself, Abby looks him up and down, before scolding herself. Down girl. She doesn’t even know him yet. And even if she did, she wouldn’t know what to do, hopeless around men. Truth be told, she’d never had a serious relationship, always been a little shy. Or she just never found the right one. But… Doesn’t hurt to look, does it?
She forces herself to look away, biting her lip in shame.
Frank hands her the block, before he puts his hands back into the pocket of his coat. Silence falls between them. Abby fidgets with the block, while Frank looks at her. He opens his mouth, as if he’s gonna say something, but no words come out. He looks away, nods and turns towards the door.
“Have a nice day, Frank.”
He gives her a quick wave and leaves the store. Abby looks after him until he reaches his car, wondering what he wanted to say. She looks at the block in her hand, smiling, before she returns to her chores.
Tumblr media
The next day, Abby and Mildred are sitting in the couch area, when Mildred spots something outside.
“Well, will you look at that? Frank is in town again. Twice in one month.” She takes a sip of her coffee, her eyes following him as he walks towards the shop. “Don’t think that has ever happened before.”
“Actually…” Abby starts softly, biting her bottom lip. Mildred looks at her, scotching closer. “He was here yesterday.”
Mildred looks at Abby softly, raising her brow, as a shit eating grin spreads on her face. “Hmm… I wonder what’s suddenly causing him to visit more.”
She nudges Abby’s shoulder playfully, before she puts her cup down, walking towards the back room.
“What are you doing?” Abby asks, confused.
“Leaving you alone with him.” Mildred blinks, before she disappears behind the kitchen door, just in time for Frank to enter the shop. Abby turns to face him, a blush slowly creeping up her cheeks. Frank walks towards her slowly, a faint smile on his lips.
Huh. A smile. Would you look at that? Abby can’t help but imagine how he would look with a full-on smile, how it would light up his face.
“I was wondering if my cakes were ready. Was heading to town anyways, so…”
“Oh, yeah. I… I was just about to call you, actually.” She smiles softly, fighting the urge to smile too much. Mildred couldn’t be right, could she?
Abby gets up to get his cakes, already packed up nicely in a little box. As she hands him the box, he has a faint smile on his face, his features softening ever so slightly. Looking softer, he’s not that intimidating. Sure, the hair was a little long, and that beard could use a little trim, too. But it really wasn’t that bad.
As he walks to the door, Abby softly wishes him a good day, even though he never reciprocates. Frank stops in the door, looking out into the street, before he looks back at her. His brown eyes are soft, as they look into her green ones.
“Have a nice day” he says quickly, before lowering his gaze and walking out the store.
Once outside, he looks through the window, but when he sees Abby watching, he blushes and looks away. As Frank walks to his car, Mildred comes out of the backroom, practically snickering. She puts her arm around Abby, a wide smile on her face.
“That is something I never thought I would see. You got more than 5 words out of him. He must like you.”
She gives Abby a little squeeze, before she returns to her coffee, already talking about the county fair, even though it’s still a month away. But Abby’s mind is still on Frank. He couldn’t possibly like her, could he?
She shakes her head, walking over to Mildred, trying not to smile too much.
Tumblr media
The next few weeks flew by. Frank had come into the shop 3 more times. Once to pick up more cookies and twice for… Well, Abby wasn’t sure. He said he just wanted coffee, but the coffee couldn’t be that good, could it?
He was still very quiet, not talking much at all. A few sentences here and there, but one thing she noticed was his voice. He sounded warmer, more comfortable. Even his body language changes. He looks more relaxed, the tension gone from his shoulders, as he sits on the couch, enjoying a coffee while looking at the small bookshelves.
One day he casually mentioned he was reading Moby Dick as he was browsing through her collection of classics. It was nice to know they had that in common.
Sometimes they don’t even talk at all, just relax in each other’s company. Every so often, Abby would look up as she’s finishing up a cake, only to find Frank’s eyes already on her. And for every sweet smile she gave him, he would give one in return.
The bell to the shop rings. When Abby looks up, she is in shock for a second. Frank is there and in his hand is a bouquet of Gerber Daisies. Smiling widely, surprised by his gesture, she takes the flowers from him. “What is this for?”
“The shop's three-month anniversary.” His voice soft and… nervous? No, she must be mistaken. “It’s from my garden.” He continues softly, looking at her. Abby is one big smile, as she finds an empty vase and pour some water in. Once the flowers are in, she puts it right on the counter.
He couldn’t have picked a better flower, the Gerber Daisy being one of her favorites. She had always loved colors and could remember how her dad would always bring her mother a bouquet every Friday, filled with Gerber Daisies in all the colors the florist had.
“It… It reminded me of you.” He says softly, a gentleness to his voice that almost makes her heart ache.
“How so?” Abby asks softly, almost certain her face was flushed red at this point.
“You’re colorful.” He huffs softly, before looking down at his hands. With a shrug of his shoulders, he looks up into her eyes again. But before he can say anything, they’re interrupted by Mr. Peterson, the guy who owned the flower shop next door.
“Hello Miss Miller. Here with your flowers.”
When he sees Frank, he instantly smiles wider. “Mr. Castle, it’s such a pleasure you’ve been coming to town more.”
Frank nods and smiles, before he walks to the door in a hurry. Mr. Peterson just shrugs it off, before he begins replacing the flowers around the shop.
Abby looks down at the Daisies, gently taking one of the petals between her fingertips. So he thinks about her, huh? A warm feeling runs through her, her heart beating faster. Abby wondered what he was about to say, when they got interrupted? God, she wishes she knew.
Still caressing the soft petal, she barely hears when Mr. Peterson speaks to her. “I’m sorry, Mr. Peterson. What?”
“Just said I was done, Dear. Have a good day.” He looks at her hand, before shooting her a knowing smile. He snickers softly as he leaves the store. Great, now that’ll be all over town. But somehow, she really doesn’t care. She turns to the flowers again and then notices something on the counter. A wallet.
Confused, she picks it up and looks for an ID. A huge grin spreads as she reads the name. Francis Cast-… Castiglione? Italian? And a Francis, huh? Curious, she reads the rest. His address, birthday and… Wait… His birthday was only a few days away. Should she…? No, that would be crazy, wouldn’t it? He would probably hate it if she did anything.
If he wanted to celebrate his birthday, he would say so, right? But maybe he didn’t say anything because-
Before she can finish the thought, some customers walk in. As she helps them pick out some cakes, Frank comes back. He sees his wallet and gestures to Abby that he found it, before leaving again.
A week later, Abby is sitting in her car, heading down a small forest road. This was probably crazy, but she really wanted to do something nice for Frank.
The last few months they had gotten closer and dared she think, had become friends? And friends didn’t let another friend be alone on their birthday.
Finally, after 4 wrong turns and 50 checks to many with the GPS, Abby finally pulls into the driveway. As she looks around, she is at a loss for words. The cabin is beautiful, taken straight out of a travel magazine. Beautiful wood and stones, perfectly matched, looking gorgeous against the green of the woods. Near the treeline, there are huge stacks of lumber.
The whole place is really quiet, peaceful. She gets why Frank loves it up here.
From a small gap in the trees, Frank emerges, followed by two pitbulls. When he sees Abby, he drops his axe on a log and walks towards her car, a frown on his face.
Shit. Maybe this was a bad idea. As he strides towards her car, she braces herself. Ready to be scolded, told to fuck off. She slowly exits the car, smiling gently at Frank.
“What are you doing here?”
She can’t quite decipher his expression. A mixture of anger and shock is painted on his face. Maybe even panic. Abby gets it. She’s probably the first one up here in years, maybe ever. “Sorry, I… It’s your birthday, so I wanted to-”
“How do you know?” He demands, looking into her eyes, confusion written all over his face.
“I… I looked in your wallet. To see who left it.” She bites her lip, looking at the ground like a scolded child. When she looks back up into his eyes, his expression has softened.
“Sorry, I… I never have visitors.”
“And now I see why.” Abby smiles nervously, gesturing towards his intimidating posture. Frank instantly relaxes.
A small wine comes from behind him, and they both look at the dogs, sitting nicely, waiting to be called over. Frank whistles and the dogs rush to Abby, almost knocking her over. She’s always loved dogs, grew up with them and had actually been thinking about adopting one after she moved out here.
“Easy boy.” Frank says softly to the eager dark one. God, his deep rich voice always makes her heart flutter.
“They’re cute. What’s their names?” Abby asks curiously, her eyes never leaving the dogs. Always been a dog person, maybe even liking them more than humans. Dogs are honest, their emotions and intentions always clear. She liked that.
“This guy is Max.” He points to the dark grey Pitbull, before turning to the red one. “And this little boy is… Red.”
Frank shuffles slightly, scratching the back of his head, as he looks down at the two of them. “Max I rescued, and Red I got at a shelter. Named after someone I knew years ago.”
He smiles softly as he pats squats down and pat the young Pitbull’s head. Abby couldn’t help but wonder who this person was. Must’ve have meant something to Frank. Abby stands again, brushing the dirt and dog hairs of her fingers. Suddenly nervous, she smoothed down her dress, before gesturing towards her car. “I actually brought you something.”
Abby excitedly opens the door, pulling out the cake and a present. Her smile falls slightly, when she sees his face. Abby was expecting him to be surprised, but she never would have expected this.
He looks overwhelmed, like he can’t believe what is happening. Abby’s heart clenches at the thought. How long had it been since anyone had done anything like this for him?
He gestures for her to follow, leading her to the backyard. While he goes inside to get plates, Abby sits down in a lounge chair. She didn’t know what she expected his place to look like, but it wasn’t quite this. New stylish furniture that complimented the wood of the cabin. It was all very clean and minimalistic, but still somehow had soul. She looks towards the terrace door, dying to know what it looks like on the inside. Maybe next time.
Frank comes back with a tray, holding plates, cups and a teapot. But that’s not what has caught Abby’s attention.
While inside, Frank has taken his jacket off and holy fuck. Abby had never seen arms as his, suddenly feeling her throat dry up. Toned muscular arms, flexed, so thick. And God, the shirt. Until now, she had only seen him with a jacket or sweatshirt on, never really knowing what kind of body was underneath. But now, as his tight t-shirt clings to him slightly damp skin, nothing is left to imagination. A broad, muscular chest. Nipples perked in the cool afternoon air. Abs dancing under the thin fabric. She bites her lip, wondering what he would look like without it, sweat dripping down his chest as he chops wood?
It takes every ounce of willpower for Abby to look away, before she gets caught. Her head now filled with images she wouldn’t forget anytime soon, she clears her throat, pushing the cake towards Frank.
“I… I-“ she coughs, stumbling over her words. Damn, how could he affect her so much without even doing anything. “I didn’t know what flavor you liked, so I made carrot cake.”
“Well, lucky for you I love cream cheese frosting.” A wide smile plays on his handsome features. Just when she didn’t think he could be any prettier, he smiles.
Frank carves them both a piece and then they eat in silence, looking out over his grounds. A big field of grass surrounded by trees. To one side, there’s a big greenhouse filled with plants and raised beds with herbs. To the other side there’s bushes with berries.
All over the yard there’s flowers, making it a colorful space. But closest to her, in many pots on the terrace, there’s Gerber Daisies. Just like the ones he gave her, in all colors of the rainbow. “This place is really wonderful, Frank.”
He just smiles and mutters a quiet thank you through a mouthful of cake. Abby giggles softly, the sight of Frank with his mouth full priceless, his cheeks filled out like a chipmunk. “So, I take it the cake was a hit?”
“Best damn cake I’ve had in years, sweetheart.”
She’s so damn easy. One ‘sweetheart’ leaves his lips and she’s a puddle. But to be fair, that voice of his is something else.
Abby gently pushes the present towards him. Frank tears the paper away, smiling when he sees the book. Okay, sure, maybe she should have gotten him something else. But she didn’t know him well enough, and he did seem to love books.
“Looking at what books you eyed at the shop, I thought that you might enjoy ‘The Call of the Wild’.”
“I love it, thank you.” Frank smiles softly, opening the book, inspecting the pages. Suddenly captivated by the way his fingers gently dance over the pages, Abby can’t help but wish she was that book. To have his fingers dance over her skin like that. She swallows a huge lump, looking at his hands. How could such a big book look small in his hands?
After a moment's silence, he looks into her eyes, suddenly looking a little nervous. “Abby, you’re going to the county fair, right?”
Slightly surprised by his question, she tells him how Mildred coerced her into helping set up. “But my evening is free. Why?”
“Maybe… You’d wanna go with me?”
Abby isn’t sure he heard him right. But the way he smiles, she knows it’s true. She can’t hold back her smile, as she happily agrees.
She was already tripping. Did he just ask her on a date? As she looks up into his beautiful chocolate eyes, a soft smile on his face, her heart flutters. Saturday couldn’t come fast enough.

Cowgirls Don't Cry | Sean MacGuire x f!reader/f!OC
Fic Summary: A former fiddler in a traveling band reminisces on her short time in the Van Der Linde gang in the year 1889 through memories and letters. During a time when seeking a fresh start from a path of crime led to finding kinship, love and a hell of a lot more trouble.
Pairings: Sean x f!OC, implications of Arthur x f!OC
Characters: Sean Macguire, Arthur Morgan, Dutch Van Der Linde
Chapter Warnings: Violence, death. Mentions of prostitution implied.
Wordcount: 2,062
Notes: This is intended to be written about my OC but can be easily interpreted as f!reader x Sean. Just know the Prologue and the first chapter are OC backstory and that this fic is written in first person, past tense (with some chapters written in letter/journal entry style) and not Y/N ( I know this is usually preferred but I struggle to write this way).
I'm writing this to cope with my irl sadness over Sean's in game death 😭
I'm genuinely looking for feedback and welcome constructive criticism, comments, ideas, thoughts etc. Please tell me if you want more or would like to be on the taglist for future updates!!
Thanks for checking out my work!

[Prologue, 1904]
(Letter to Arthur Morgan, from “Jane M. MacGuire”)
Dear Arthur,
I don't know if this letter will ever find you. I have my doubts that Dutch is still receiving mail under the same name or if you're even still with him. If it does, I hope it finds you well. You'll have to forgive me for using an alias of my own, but I can't risk the shadows of my past following me.
In case you didn't realize, it's Mildred Donahue. That name ring a bell? The short time I spent with the Van der Linde gang seems like a life time ago, now. Some days, it feels like it was just yesterday, but I do hope you haven't forgotten me. You always seemed to have a lot on your mind, and rightfully so. Not to mention how time changes everything.
Little Sean is five now (I mentioned him in my last letter a few years back, if you got it.) and every bit like his daddy. Can't seem to find the will to sit still or stop talking to save his life. Loves to sing, just like him, too. I just know he's gonna be a handful for his teachers when he starts school. That's where I'm working now, in West Elizabeth. I underwent some schooling last year, (improved my writing, as you can see) and now work as a part time teacher. Not the life I would have ever imagined for myself, but it keeps a roof over our heads. Still doing my music, as well and help out at a few homesteads when I can. Life aint what you'd call easy, but shit, was it ever? Before Sean was born, I used to prefer it that way.
Just a few days ago, I was telling little Sean about the day I met his daddy. He's at that age now where he's full of questions. I may have left out a few details so not to give the boy nightmares, (as I often do when it comes to our past, though his fascination with gunslinger tales concerns me). My Pa use to say my memory was as sharp as a whip, and he wasn't wrong, despite the things I wish I could forget. Anyways, it made me think of you, since you were there...
It was a few years after our farm house burned down in Georgia and I had split from "the band" to start a new life for myself out West. Thought I'd find a way to get back on the "righteous path to Salvation" or earn an honest living at least. How young and foolish I was back then. Still fearing the eternal flames of hell for my wicked ways.
If you remember, I was all but penniless when you lot found me on that train I had hopped. I was pretty good at it, by then. Made it across three states without paying a dime for a ticket. (Hate to admit it, but I'm still rather proud of the fact). I knew that if I laid low in one of them cargo cars that had crates or barrels you could duck behind, the train officer wouldn't see me when they poked around. Other times, I had hid underneath those cars and held on for dear life, but it was early spring and far too cold for that.
I could tell by the drop in temperature that I was nearly in Colter. Lucky for me, those crates were full of fresh imported fruit, so I had something more to eat than the smoked venison in my burlap sack. That sack full of clothes (with a few of my meager worldly possessions) and my Pa's hunting rifle was all I was travelling with. I sat huddled, trying to stay warm enough to sleep and hoping by the time I opened my eyes, I'd have landed in Blackwater where I was headed. I'd barely closed them when the train suddenly screeched along the track and everything inside lurched forward. My heart nearly jumped out of my chest. My limbs flew out in all directions to steady myself or grab hold of something, but it was too late.
A stack of crates would have crushed me to death if one hadn't hit the side of the car just above me and busted open. I don't know what was more bruised: myself or the dozens of California peaches that buried me (My bet is on the former). After I crawled out from underneath that pile, I realized what had happened. Someone had pulled the damn emergency break. I happened to be near the kitchen car, and after a moment, I heard the panicked voices of the serving staff. Couldn't make out everything they said, besides "robbery" and "evacuate". I was more irritated that my ride had been delayed than I was scared. But I scurried out anyways, fearing I'd get caught stowing away with all the commotion. I hopped onto the next car, which was a flat deck, and crashed right into you, Arthur Morgan, as I was running across. Knocked me right on my backside, you did. You always were a big brute! Next thing I knew I was looking up at your bandana-covered face, that did little to hide how startled you were to see me, and down the barrel of your pistol. You took one look at me, and lowered your weapon. Guess you didn't know how intimidating I could be once you got past my willowy frame and baby face, but I can't say the same for Sean (Sr.). Who appeared behind you and shoved his damn cattle revolver right in my face.
"You there, girl! Hand over your money, jewelry. Whatever you've got." He bellowed at me in his thick Donegal accent. I didn't answer at first (he'd later blame it on my stubbornness, and was probably right) and he was less than amused. He fired a shot in the air and pressed the hot steel against my forehead. Trying to scare me, the damn fool. "Now! Get movin'!"
I reached up and shoved the gun away. "Do you see the rags I'm wearing? You think I've got any jewels on me, you half-wit?" That was the only time I can recall seeing him taken aback by my back-talk, and he looked to you, not quite sure what to make of me. That's when I heard another shot ring out, and watched a bullet sail a few inches past his ear. A lawman or train officer of some sort was yelling "Stop right there!" and I took the distraction as an opportunity to grab my rifle off my back. I had planned to shoot Sean, if I'm to be honest, but I knew that if it came down to between being shot by a shrimpy Irish thief, or hung at the gallows for not paying for a ticket, I'd prefer the bullet. So I quickly threw Sean aside so I could fire at the lawman. Poor bastard's head exploded and he dropped off the side of the car like a sack of bricks. A few others came scurrying onto the deck, one of which was (the legendary) Dutch Van Der Linde.
At the time, I had seen his face on 'Wanted' posters in nearly every state I'd been in. Though I didn't recognize it until her lowered his bandana. He addressed you, thinking you had shot the man."Nice shot, Arthur. Was he the only one tailing us?" Sean was peering over the edge of the rail at the carcass. The cocky demeanor I had seen a moment ago replaced with a boyish excitement I often see in my son today. "Damn right it was a nice shot, Dutch. Clean through the bastard's eye and out the top of his head! But don't give Morgan more credit than he deserves. It was-" Before he could complete his sentence, Dutch had noticed me. I will admit, I was frozen with fear this time (or perhaps a little starstruck). His dark eyes moved to the gun in my hands. "Where'd you learn to shoot like that, girl?" I mistook his admiration for suspicion. The gun was shaking in my hands. "I-I aint got nothing worth stealing. You can check my bag." He gave a greasy chuckle. "Relax, Miss. You can put the gun down, we aint going to rob you. Just wondered if you might be looking for work?" I was baffled and, frankly, insulted by the insinuation. When I thought about what I'd read about his gang and the horrible blood-thirsty maniacs the papers had painted y'all to be, I thought he surly was implying something unspeakable.
"I aint interested in the kind of work you're offering.", I said. He raised his palms as if surrendering and said "Suit yourself." Then he told you boys to grab the horses from one of your partners (Marston, perhaps. Who had been riding them along side the train) and started to estimate out loud how much money you had just stolen. As you all started to move before more lawmen came, it took me half a minute to consider the prospect of money, which I desperately needed, whether it was stolen or not. "Wait!" I called out, hopping off the car after you all. Dutch stopped and turned. "I aint gonna do anything vulgar to entertain you fellas, if that's what you're thinking. But I can shoot a gun. I can plow a field and rope cattle..."
Before I could continue, Dutch was already laughing. "You won't be expected to do anything of the likes, I can assure you. However, assuming the bullet you put in that man's head wasn't a stroke of beginner's luck, we, of the Van Der Linde gang, would be privileged have your company." (I remember being surprised by how well-spoken the man was. It certainly wasn't expected.) He asked my name. "Mildred, sir. Mildred Donahue. Most call me Millie." Dutch then turned to you. "Arthur, would it trouble you to escort this fine young woman to our lodgings?" You answered in your gruff American drawl, "I don't see why not." and offered me a hand to hoist me onto the back of the horse you were riding.
And just like that, I was part of the Van Der Linde family. The day that forever changed my life.
I could probably recall a lot more about what was said on that ride back to camp, and my first impressions of the rest of the gang I grew to love so much, but I reckon I have rambled on long enough, Arthur. This letter is already two and a half pages. Any more information, and it may rival the novel that I heard Mary-Beth is in the middle of writing about us (I still write to her, too). You know how reminiscent I get, Arthur. And how I tend to overthink things to death. I still wonder about the sort of life I might had led had I not followed you that day. Can't ever seem to let go of the past. But you once told me, that it was a part of who I am, and I couldn't agree more.
Wherever you are, Arthur Morgan, I do hope you're well. I hope you've found even a sliver of the peace of mind that I know we all desperately craved near the end of our turmoiled journey. For some of us it was those plans and silly dreams of Dutch's that were doomed to never manifest, and for the rest of us, it was simply the quiet, familiarity of a life that wasn't quite so hardened. I've certainly found that, or at least have begun to. But that doesn't mean I don't miss it sometimes or that I aint always on my toes. Old habits, I suppose.
I know I never got a chance to tell you, with the abrupt way I left the gang, but I very much owe you more than my gratitude for brighter turn of events in my life, Arthur. And I know that you'll understand why I say that better than anyone. I hope one of these days I will hear back from you, but if I don't, do take care of yourself, cowpoke.
Sincerely,
Millie Donahue. (Outlaws for Life!)
