Hip-hop's love of alter-egos and pseudonyms - Mac Miller, Kendrick, MF DOOM
Through the decades, hip-hop artists have had an obsession with creating music under pseudonyms and alter-egos, mostly to enforce the idea of them rapping from the mindset of a different character or to dip their fingers into another genre, without people knowing it's them and to avoid their sound getting judged as if it's'being produced under their mainstream name. This common obsession of multi-layered artists, who can produce, rap and sing has ended up in multiple jazz and R&B projects or hip-hop albums with a different concept and from a different persona, rather than what you'd expect from MF Doom per se.
Speaking of DOOM, he's probably one of the most notable artists when thinking of rappers with multiple alter egos. Although easily distinguishable by his mask, whenever you're listening to his voice, you're never sure if you're listening to MF Doom, Victor Vaughn or King Geedorah - when collabing with Madlib, the secretive rapper even created a special persona for the album they were forging and hence Madvillian and one of the best rap albums of all time, Madvillainy. Although his rapping style doesn't change from alter-ego to alter-ego, each of his personas has a specific concept he attaches it to appropriately and as such, listeners who know these personas know what to expect.
When it comes to Madlib, the legendary master of production has an alter-ego of his own, but unlike DOOM, he prefers altering his voice to not be easily recognizable and create a disguise for himself - pitching his voice up when rapping and making it sound very much like from a childish cartoon, Madlib created the persona Quasimoto - occassonally he'll use his real voice when rapping under his moniker, allowing you to easily distinguish his real voice and the cartoonish sound of Quasimoto, such as in "Real Eyes". Another legendary producer, Flying Lotus, adopted the name of Captain Murphy to drop a mixtape named DUALITY in 2012, dropping a very experimental and obsessive project, which originally aired as a short film, which showed archived footage of cults, pornography, cartoons and 1980s films.
Sometimes artists drop the alias and use their real names to create unknown music - R&B's very own Blood Orange, known for his soft, romantic sound, creates music under his real name Devonte Hynes, focusing on much darker and mellower beats and showcasing his ability to produce, such as in his recent project named Fields.
Mac Miller would regurarly take on alter-egos for his music and production - when producing he would do so under the moniker Larry Fisherman, having production credits on his own projects, as well as on Ab-Soul, SZA, JID, Earl and Vince Staple's music. In 2013 he took on the name Delusional Thomas, after originally using it in Watching Movies with the Sound Off, to create a horrorcore inspired mixtape, explaining that "everyone has shit in them" and this was his way to deal with his internalized issues. On a happier note, in 2012 he created 22-minute jazz album under the pseudonym Larry Lovestein & The Velvet Revival, giving back to the genre which made him fall in love with music.
Many rappers have used nicknames as a form of showing their artistic growth - Kendrick Lamar famously dropped the nickname of K.Dot before dropping his 2010 mixtape Overly Dedicated and then went on to become a cultural phenomenon under his government name and later Kung-Fu Kenny, which he used to signalize that he had mastered his craft in songwriting, like a master in Kung-Fu. J. Cole put down the moniker of The Therapist in 2011, Sylvan LaCue found succes once he dropped his stage name QuESt and Anderson. Paak became one of the biggest names in the game only once he let go of the name Breezy Lovejoy.
Sometimes fans don't let you take on an alternative persona though - Killer Mike could never escape his famous persona, much to Mike Bigga's dismay and Lil Ugly Mane took on a handful of monikers, before once again going back to his original name he's mostly known for and Donald Glover will more than likely always be known as Childish Gambino, even after saying that his next project will be the last one under that nickname.

Are you cursed when it comes to technology? >> Not at all.
Do you enjoy horseback riding? >> I’ve never been.
Have you ever ridden a horse without a saddle? >> No.
Do you like your tea sweetened or not so much? >> Some tea I like unsweetened, but usually I put honey in. If it’s a choice between sugar or unsweetened, though, I’ll choose unsweetened every time.
Do you like rollercoasters? >> I did the last time I was on one, which is so long ago at this point that my opinion may well be different next time. Bodily tolerance to such things tends to fluctuate with time.
Would you rather go skiing or snowboarding? >> Never done either, so I have no preference.
Do you enjoy travelling? >> Yes.

Do you tan? >> No.
Where's your favorite place to shop online? >> I don’t have a favourite online vendor.
At what age did you recieve your learner's permit? (driving) >> I never did.
For you, what's the ultimate adrenaline rush? >> I don’t know.
Is there anything you need to be getting a birthdya gift for soon? >> No.
Did you have a nice childhood? >> I wouldn’t call it “nice”, exactly. It had its fun moments, but moments aren’t really enough.

Do you have a favorite football team? >> No, but I’m obligated to support the Saints. (Sorry if you meant football-football, and not American football.)
Do you work out? >> No.
Have you ever bought anything from Hot Topic? >> I’ve bought a lot of things from Hot Topic.
Is there any one thing you claim to be your world? >> No.
What do you fantasize about? >> Whatever comes up, I guess.
How do energy drinks affect you? >> I don’t know, I stopped drinking them years ago because they started to disgust me.
How's your self-esteem? >> It fluctuates.
Are you ever going to grow up? >> I don’t know, nor am I particularly concerned.
How many band tees do you own, and for what bands? >> I own several. Since I don’t feel like getting up and riffling through my drawers, I’ll see if I can name them off the top of my head: Behemoth, Trans-Siberian Orchestra (x2), Volbeat, Amon Amarth (x2), Wovenhand, Hozier, Cradle of Filth, Fall Out Boy, David Bowie... I think that’s all of them. But I’ve probably forgotten like 2.
What bands/artists have you seen live? >> Oh god, that’s a long list and I don’t feel like racking my brain for all the concerts I’ve been to right now.
Do you have a Blu-ray player? >> Well, we have a PS4.
What's your favorite animal print pattern? >> None.
Have you ever purposely killed your Sims? >> Maybe once, but it didn’t thrill me as much as it seems to thrill others. They’re more fun to play with when they’re alive.
Do you own any Mardi Gras beads? >> Yeah, I have the silver and red strings that Eli gave me for my birthday last year. Oh, and there’s still a few hanging off the mirror from the 2017 NOLA trip.
Do you ever write in cursive? >> I mean, yeah, sometimes.
Do you believe unicorns ever really existed? >> No.
Do you listen to J Bigga? >> No.
Are you getting the most you can out of your life? >> Yes, I’m getting the most that I can, with my limitations all considered.

Posted @withregram • @cormega 21 years ago I unintentionally and reluctantly changed the trajectory of east coast independence. If you’re a fan of me thank JLove he’s the one who nagged me to make an album. I was content doing what I was doing and he persisted. I gave in thinking I’m only doing this so I can say I made an album. No manager negotiated this deal I did it. No investor invested in us we invested in sweat equity. I applied the same hustle mentality that I learned from the street. JLove started it Sha Money XL ended it and in between Havoc, Alchemist, Spunk Bigga, Goldfinga, Big Ty, Ayatollah , Jae Supreme, came through and delivered. Mike Moves ,Trev, Robert Perry and Joe worked hard behind the scenes. This album happened for a reason and I love the fans like extended family I will never flex on you because everything I have is because of you. Salute. History has a way of rewriting itself but I can never be written out this body of work is for the ages. DJ KSlay said this was album of the year. Here we are 21 years later Rest In Peace Slay I will blast the new one so you can hear it in the essence. Salute The Realness 2 is on its way https://www.instagram.com/p/CgauV-ErQCf/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Yooooooo, issa real bigga birthday today! A fave, a young Queen, Uncle Mike’s least favorite niece, young shawty Lo! Wow, you’re such an old lady today. 100 and counting? smh. You gotta slow down with the growing girl, lmfao. In all seriousness tho’, I wanna wish one of my many favorite people a very special happy birthday. I love this girl as if she were my blood sister. Even though I still hate her guts for graduating and leaving me in the hellhole to ‘suffer’ she’s taught me several things. One being to chase your dreams and not letting nothing stop you ahead. Cliché and corny, but it shows how much she was someone I could always run to for such bomb ass advice whether I was being serious or just playing around. It’s weird for someone like myself to be sappin’ this way, but it’s only right for an amazing woman like you. Happy Birthday, Uncle Mike’s least favorite niece! B.Cup loves ya’!@onthelo

Michael Santiago Render, more commonly known as Killer Mike, is an African American activist, rapper, singer, record producer, and actor. Recently, he spoke at his barber shop in Atlanta, by the name of The Swag Shop that he co-owns with his wife Shay Bigga. In honor of black history month, the Run the Jewels member did a story with Rolling Out Magazine and talked about several controversial topics including: sports, music, politics, music, education, crime, capitalism, and religion. Although he strongly advocates his beliefs, especially with the platform his barber shop, he still allows all and everyone’s opinion to be apart of his discussions.
Killer Mike identifies his music as alternative hip hop and conscious hip hop. Conscious hip hop is a subgenera of hip hop the emphasizes the struggles in social issues and conflicts among society. In class we talked about themes in hip hop and within conscious hip hop there are themes including: religion, Afrocentricity, aversion to crime and violence, culture, the economy, and the struggles of ordinary people. Although Mike’s music is more southern and mainstream, he shares some similar qualities in his music to west coast, in-your-face, gangsta rap/hip hop. In fact, in his song, “Ghetto Gospel,” he uses many religious/testimonial themes in the song. The hook being, “Oh Lord, Jesus, glory, Oh Lord.” He is expressing his struggle with his faith. He tells the Lord he prays, but asks him if he is even listening. Render’s music highlights the struggles of his childhood and family life growing up in Atlanta. In the music video, it depicts him going to church, as well as doing stereotypical rebellious acts. This shows his battle with his faith and how he feels as if his prayers are unheard.
In an episode of his Netflix series, Trigger Warning, he discusses religion and faith and shares his view on the idea of the White Jesus Christ. He believes that Blacks will have a hard time loving themselves when their God is White (Shaw, 2019). Mike finds the idea of worshipping a deity that resembles the oppressor as a challenge in his faith. He further explains this belief by explaining his view,
“How can you see divinity in yourself if you don’t see yourself,” Killer Mike said. “If you’re looking at an image that looks like the image of the oppressor and you’re told that this person is the image of God, then you are being told to subconsciously think your oppression is ordained by God. You subconsciously believe that in order to get to God, you have to participate or cooperate with your oppressor and you don’t see divinity in yourself. And because you think you need an intermediary between you and God, you disconnect what you’re already connected to. I don’t participate in any of the big three religions. I don’t think it’s good for Black people to period, to be honest” (Shaw, 2019).
His opinion on challenges of faith within the African American culture also reminded me of the concept of nihilism, which we learned about in class a week or two ago. Nihilism is the idea that life is meaningless and anyone who identifies themselves as a nihilist, disregards all ideas of religion/beliefs. Although we learned about Nihilism in West coast hip hop, it can be found is other forms of hip hop as well.
