Gravitation, Track Three

Finally! The highly anticipated (by at least three people, I’m sure) third chapter of Gravitation. I’m very excited share scans will you all. There were a couple of things I did fix from the Tokyopop version. Mostly centering the text in a couple of speech bubbles, but also I made one change to a mistranslated line. There are probably other places where the translation needs tweaking, but I don’t have the ability to dissect and fix every bit of dialog, so it will remain mostly intact from the original. One day maybe I’ll produce an improved translated version, but not this day. 

However, if you are interested in some of differences and inconsistencies between the Japanese version and official release, check out @sailorspazz‘s Tokyoslop posts (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) in which she goes into some of the details.

Gravitation Challenge: Day 2 - Favorite Female Character

Hmm. I don't exactly have a lot of options here, even if I grab from the manga too, but I think I'll go with Mika Seguchi. Sure she has a bit of a brother complex, but you would too if yours was casually sold for ten bucks, forced to commit murder, and had a mental breakdown as a result.

Overprotective as she is, she has a good heart, and she's always straight with everyone including Shuichi. That's what I like about her the most. She's going to tell you like it is and if you still don't like that, well, you can go to hell.

She's firm with Shuichi, but never cruel. No matter what else happens, she always makes sure she takes the time to sit him down, buy him lunch and explain things to him, unlike Tohma, who kind of just tells him to fuck off. With a smile, of course. But, Mika seems to like him despite the fact that she feels he's a danger to Eiri.

Not to mention, she's married to Tohma, the scariest little man in the series. Anger in the quiet types is always the most sinister. I should know; I'm one of them. Tohma is downright ruthless if he needs to be, and you know what? I respect him for that, in a weird way.

But anyway, Mika. She's married to the guy and she more than holds her own. I guess since they're both so obsessed with Eiri, the match just works for them. Which is really rather sad if you think about it. They blame themselves so much for what happened to him, he's all that matters in their world now.

There's girls in Gravitation?

I'm kinda torn between Mika and Rage.

I love me some Uesugi dysfunctional-family fun times, plus her fascinating match-made-in-mutual-affection-for-her-brother marriage to Tohma. She is basically Eiri with tits, so there's that.

But I also love me some "hey maybe Shuichi could have someone fall in love with him for a change and it could be a girl just to fuck shit up even more" PANDA ROBOT EXPLOSIONS fun times. It also amuses me to no end that Eiri totally kind of has a thing for her.

I...like these girls more for what they do for the story rather than their actual personalities. Well, no, I do like Mika's (re: Eiri + tits). Rage just kind of scares me, as she should.

IT’S THE CAULIFLOWER’S FAULT! 

This scene killed me the first time I read it a decade ago, and it still makes me laugh today. I just love the absurdity of it. The Very Serious Mr. Ohara. Poor Shuichi being unable to focus on the task at hand because his brain is still stuck on breakfast. Mika, just storming in and dragging Shuichi out of there (“Shindou, you stud!” lol!) The shocked classroom. Sleepy Hiro. And Shuichi still not comprehending what the hap is fuckening because his brain is still broken over that cauliflower.

I *get* why the anime wanted to avoid the implications of Eiri meeting a still school-aged Shuichi, but I missed the highschool antics of Shuichi and Hiro.
