Patti Labelle's solo career didn't show much promise as her early albums, such as It's Alright With Me, do present her as a professional, but that is about all. Look, one could assume she had a case of where-to-go after her being a part of a successful group for so long. To be honest, she was and is not the only one with these problems, because one can tell how tough one can strike on one's own. Still, she kept getting better at her work, which also meant she gained more chances thanks to that. However, she didn't reach her potential until later, though we shouldn't dismiss the LPs we discuss. They do present us with someone who is unsure on herself, yet when she noticed what she could be all about? She went there to show that.

Things that have not been lost on me:

Both my favourite TV show and my favourite movie (which is an adaption of my favourite book) both have graphic, yet gorgeous, queer sex scenes that look like works of art and also have beautifully tender scenes that take place in museums.

Both have a very multicultural cast.

Both have an impeccable soundtrack.

Both are about overcoming odds against an archaic entity based in London.

I have great taste as both were unmitigated global phenomenons (fuck you, Reed, this strike is exactly what you deserve).

Coincidentally, both have a Latino with a Z in their last name who was forced out of the closet by a jealous asshole, but that actually led to the prior getting better career opportunities in their respective public-speaking fields and being able to be public with the men they love.

Both were created by trans/non-binary individuals so maybe let us tell more stories!

Just finished Narcos: Mexico a few days ago, and wow, both shows are great! Good plot, good characters (so many of them😭), and the action and dialogue is incredible!

The future is female in Patel’s F1 novel! 

“Offtrack” follows Diana Zahrani, Formula One’s first female driver, and Miguel de la Fuente, World Championship favorite, as they race through the season. But when sparks fly, they must decide for the sake of their team where their priorities lie: on track, with the championship, or offtrack, with each other. 

I loved reading from Diana’s point-of-view because she is such an empowering character! F1 is a male-dominated sport, so to see her persevere despite the misogynistic culture and the obstacles imposed on her is inspiring. She does not do so without struggle. Her perspective highlights the immense pressure she experiences, yet her love for the sport never wavers, which made her more real in my eyes. 

Diana’s fellow competitors do not take her seriously. Miguel, however, recognizes that she is a fierce competitor and that is what I love about their relationship. Beyond that, the romance definitely takes a back seat to both characters’ 2022 season. Normally, I am totally okay with subtle relationship development, but because of the slow placing, that aspect of the story lost me. It paled in comparison to the well-researched F1 elements and almost felt forced, especially with the dreaded third act break-up that occurred with ten chapters to go. Nevertheless, I appreciated the friendship that blossomed between them and the way they put each other in their place on the track.

“Does it hurt?” Amado tentatively pushes the barrel forward, just a tiny bit. His palm is sweating, giving him an unpleasant sticky sensation against the metal.

“No,” Miguel sighs, “you asked a minute ago, just fucking get on with it.”

It’s almost funny from an objective point of view. How is he the more nervous one?

He swallows and pushes the gun again, this time with more force. The barrel slides in seamlessly, the lube around it making scandalous sounds.

Miguel doesn’t say anything, but the muscles in his back are immediately tensed up, his hand grasping the soft silk sheet underneath.

Amado almost asks the same question again but manages to keep quiet this time, and simply waits for the other man to relax.

He doesn’t know why Miguel wants to do this. He has some ideas but he’s not sure, just like he’s not sure why they began to have sex at all about a year ago.

He remembers the dim yellow light, the bitter aftertaste of expensive whisky and the cool leather under his palm. They were sitting side by side on the couch and Miguel leaned in, their thighs touching and his heart skipping a beat.

“Do you want it or not?”

That was all it took back then for him to say yes.

And that was all it took today.

Amado lets go of the gun for a few seconds, relaxing his fingers and wrist. Then he takes a firm hold of the grip and pushes it all the way in.

This time Miguel can’t hold back a moan. Amado knows he must have tried, he always does. Maybe it’s a sense of pride, or more likely, a strange form of detachment.

Because that’s all this is to Miguel, isn’t it? It has to be. It’s an escape from the business and from himself, a delusion that he is willing to trust and give up control, to be a simple man that enjoys the most primal form of pleasure, even just for a few minutes.

But it’s not an escape for Amado himself. It’s a lot of things: a reward, a test, a fantasy, but never an escape.

Because even when he’s holding the trigger, there are no bullets in the gun. Whatever he does to Miguel in bed, be it gentle kisses or rough play, or even right now when he repeatedly thrusts a pistol in and out of Miguel’s body, he’s ultimately doing only one thing:

Whatever Miguel wants.
