#MidnightMonologues (I am sure it is midnight somewhere in the world) Technology robs us of some of the most beautiful things. Like family albums. There was always the one Japicha with a bicycle who would ride around the hood taking photos of families for 40 bob. Then the production would take like a week as he goes to wash the photos. In fact, they were not called Photos or Images. Those are terms that came with the advent of smart phones. Those things were called Snaps. They came with a Negative stuck on the back. That was before they invented cameras that can capture your future. In those days, when the Japicha was coming, you would shower, apply Vaseline until you shine like polished shoes and then pose like it is the last time you will ever pose. Like many families, we had booklets of these snaps, organized in chronological order. There are those moments we'd sit with Karua, flipping through these albums and I kept asking "Who is that?" "That is your uncle." "Which one?" You know how in Africa, anyone from your village who is not too old was either an Uncle or an Aunty, and they used to come visit you in your town home every so often. Sometimes we were asked to give up our beds for them and sleep on the sofa, and that shit sucked...admit it, it is true. Or those times when you had to take them round the hood, or to the CBD. Who ever liked such errands when there was Conan or Sinbad to catch on Sunday afternoons? Family albums are a rich family history that you can hold. A bank of memories, if you please. You do not show your family albums to a girl unless you are serious about her. Otherwise, if she is a passerby in your life, there is no point of her seeing you wearing an oversized Kaunda suit over Fubu sneakers. Today, Facebook and Instagram have taken the place of these booklets of memories . The Snapchat generation of kids will probably never understand what I am talking about, and that is such a sad, sad thing.

I'm 27 today and I've never been so thankful for my life. In the years to come, I will weigh important decisions better, to never discount my independence, to never settle for less, and to continue to value the most valuable currency in this universe; time.
