26 Ways to Feel Mortal - M: Morning

26 Chapters based around experiences that newly arrived Geno experiences while trying to find the Star Pieces.

Morning: (noun) The period of time between midnight and noon, especially from sunrise to sunset.

Geno stroke the small campfire to keep it alight, as Mario had instructed before falling asleep. The newly arrived Star doing his best to keep an eye on everything. In case something tried to jump them while Mario and Mallow slept. Even if the human said they would be fine.

The strange quiet was honestly unnerving. Sure, the rustling leaves, whistling wind, and nighttime creatures were easily heard. But, it was different than the quiet from his home. The roar of comets flying by. The gentle whispers of hopeful wishes as they were categorized. The contentment of hearing his fellow Stars while they worked. 

Geno was used to ‘noisy’ quiet. 

This was not the normal quiet he was used to.

How homesick he felt.

Sure, Geno did this to himself. Even after being warned what it meant leaving to gather the shattered pieces. He knew in order to get his home back, someone would need to go down to gather what was destroyed.

It didn’t make him feel better about his current choices. The entire situation made him feel…weird. 

Geno blinked when he realized the world was growing lighter. At first panicking in thinking that he’d allowed the fire to burn out of control. When that (thankfully) was not the issue, Geno followed where the light was coming from. 

He winced when his eyes landed on a bright orb of light. Using his hand to partially block it to get a better look. 

The sky was a beautiful display of pastel blues, pinks, and yellows. White clouds seem to reflect said colors perfectly. The sun barely over the horizon as if slowly waking the world to a new morning with warmth it produced. 

After the initial shock of the bright light, Geno took in the amazing sight before him. “Wow…”

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”

The puppet jumped hearing a new voice. Turning to find Mario approaching with his hands raised. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you.”

“You’re fine. I just thought you were still asleep.”

“Probably should be,” the human said casually as he sat next to Geno.

“So…why don’t you?”

“It’s not that easy, really wish it was though. But, I woke up and decided I wanted to join you seeing the sunrise. This is your first one, right?”

“Yes.”

“Anything like this up in space?”

“No, there’s no day or night cycle up there. It’s all very…beautiful.”

Geno’s eyes were on the sunrise. Not seeing Mario’s warm smile aimed at him.

“Yeah…beautiful.”

The first MC-related thing I wrote, and retroactively became the MC theme song. This was actually a remake of a midi I made years ago intended for part of an RPG a friend was making, until the RPG was cancelled. It's mostly the same, except that I went back and made it more jazzy (added saxophone and a swing rhythm). The original title of it was "Seriousness".

Author commentary:

The Midnight Crew have item/weapon duality, just like in Problem Sleuth which is the fictional realm they originated from. But it's almost a hybrid inventory system adding a dash of Homestuck, since the items that become weapons are always playing cards (you know, kinda like captchalogue cards). The four aces in the deck represent their primary weapons: the horse hitcher, the car antenna, the table leg, and the pool cue.

The Felt are the MC's adversaries in the actual Homestuck intermission. Fifteen members (plus their boss) each representing a billiard ball. They are all time travelers, and mostly a bunch of incompetent goons. The surface of a pool table is made of felt, hence the name of the gang. Also I guess they are a little reminiscent of a bunch of green puppets, so there's that.

Makin: 1031 is just a reference to the flash being posted right after Halloween (10/31 in the american date scheme). Also, did you ever notice the Felt's name tag is actually a pool table?

Barney catches up with Gordon on the tram ride 'home.' He's sitting instead of standing, head leaned back against the window, arms wrapped protectively around his torso. He looks for all the world like he's in pain, but Barney's about seventy-percent sure he's not. Gordon, despite being mute, doesn't seem to internalize anything-- if he's hurt, he whines about it.

So maybe he's just sleeping?

"Hey, Doc," Barney starts, quiet. "You good?"

And Gordon shudders, cracking one eye open, then the other-- he's drowsy, then. His jaw cracks as he yawns as wide as he can go.

"When'd you get here, Calhoun?" He asks, sitting up straight.

"Just got on. Hey, I've got lunch for ya," Barney replies, taking a moment to put together the signs before setting the paper brown bag on his lap. "Even you have to eat."

He watches Gordon rummage through the bag, pulling out what looks like an elaborate sandwich and a thing of vegetables. The doctor bites into it with a surprising vengeance.

"What's on your mind, Doc?" Barney chances to ask, taking a tentative seat beside him. "You've got your thinkin' eyes on."

The other doesn't respond for a while, focused on eating. There's a tension in his shoulders that translates to rigidity throughout the rest of his body-- he's on edge, like a finely sharpened knife. Barney pays close attention.

"This is what Kleiner eats," is the first thing he says. "He ate it in MIT, too. Never saw him eat anything else during lunch."

Barney nods. "Kleiner's, uh, he actually asked me to give that to you," he admits. "Says you-- didn't eat lunch?"

Again, that guarded look. Then Gordon shakes himself and it's gone, leaving nothing but bright eyes and a pinched expression. His hands dance-- finally waving around to clear everything he tried to say, curling up against each other in his lap.

Barney smiles, gentle. "You don't have to tell me anything, ya hear? Kleiner was your professor in MIT, right? Y'know, he talked about you even way before you first got here."

At that, Gordon flushes, embarrassed. "That doesn't sound very professional."

"No, I guess it ain't."

The tram shudders around them. Vibrations underfoot intensify as the rails underfoot grow dirty and mal-cared for, which triggers an automated response from the tram itself. Barney mimes along to the robotic message, using his right hand as a puppet to mouth it.

There's a strange, raspy splutter beside him-- he looks, just in time to see Gordon laughing.

Barney feels heat strike his cheeks, the world swaying around him. The laughter is mostly silent except for some errant squeaks. His shoulders shake and one hand grips Barney's knee as an anchor, the other pressed against his mouth. A giddy feeling rises in his chest-- he's never seen Gordon laugh before.

Not like this, anyway.

Dumbly, he thinks it's the most beautiful thing he's ever seen. He almost says as much but his voice comes out incoherent, sentences jamming into one another. Besides, over the violent tram ride, it's impossible to hear anything...

The automated response finishes unparroted by Barney.

His skin is on fire even after Gordon removes his hands, apologizing profusely, and Barney just--

"Why are you apologizin', Dr. Freeman? By golly, if you think I'm funny, I ain't gonna tell ya otherwise! Hey, what do you know about aliens?"

Barney grins wide enough to hurt as Gordon puffs up real big, a keen look in his eye, and launches into a tirade.

you sit in your room, wrapped up in darkness, and think about barney calhoun. you think about black mesa. you think about college, and what your life was like outside these walls. you think about the people you met, the friends you never had, and the deadlines taunting you from the other end of the week. it all comes back to calhoun in the end.

he's an unknown. you can't compartmentalize him with the rest of the security team because he's become an individual. you know his face, could pick his voice out from a crowded room. he's got hazel eyes with more green flecks than brown. he swears at you in sign.

he remembers what you say.

he remembers what you do.

that's new. the last person to do that was kleiner.

(and look what you did with kleiner-- you attached to him like a lost puppy; you've become a dead weight to his career. every time you meet there's disappointmentregretpity in his---)

pain radiates throughout your hand as you squeeze the edge of your blanket. you double down on your hold for as long as you can stand it, taking comfort in the heat of your injury. the bandage restricts your movement somewhat, but you stress that too, willing the maelstrom of negative feelings to go away.

they abate, eventually. you're left feeling somewhat relieved, but mostly ashamed, slightly numb.

you wonder what calhoun is up to.

you wonder if it's too much to text him.

you decide against it to the tune of the kettle whistling on your stove. you let it ring for several moments, piercing the stale air of your Black Mesa apartment. it's the little things, you think. the handle is hot, and the water steams as you pour it into a mug.

the water quickly darkens as the teabag's contents leeches into it-- nothing to do now except wait.

the clock hands read midnight, maybe a few minutes past. your tea steeps, impassive and uncaring to the exhaustion in your bones. what time was it when you tried to go to bed?

nine pm? something to that effect. you wonder what calhoun is doing. he could be sleeping himself, or working graveyard shift. that makes you smile.

"The only reason I volunteer for graveyard shifts is to look for aliens," Barney had told you, only a few days ago. "I swear to god we have them. Black Mesa's hiding them in the lower levels."

you had looked at him askance, a little put upon. "go on," you told him deliberately.

"Black Mesa's hiding them! That's why we have the military on call. Shit, my last exercise was headed by a Marine. That's weird, Doc! And, and, and," Barney had punctuated his words with a snap of his fingers, then pointed at you with conviction, "I hear some guards are issued RPGs. What the hell do we need RPGs for in a goddamn research facility, Doc?"

you hadn't known. you still didn't know, but you also didn't want to think about it. scientist though you may be, there were some things that were better left unknown.

no matter how much effort you put into the strange crystals that constituted your research here. where they came from mattered not-- this you tell yourself to maintain sanity.

"Why don't you tell me?" you had invited him, because letting Barney talk had been the safest option.

and talk he did.

you're surprised to feel yourself smiling as you remove the teabag, carefully depositing it into the waste bin. the conversation had lifted your spirits then, and it seemed it was doing the same now. but calhoun always seemed to have that effect--

which makes you feel guilty for doubting him at times.

the peppermint tea scalds your tongue, stealing you away from another spiral.

Once again, Barney finds himself staring down Gordon's door, their conversation having carried them off the trams and directly into the science team's dormitories. He laughs, then sobers up fairly quickly, cutting a look at his friend.

"This time I really do need to get home," he starts, "but if you need anything, just call, ya hear?"

"I hear," Gordon replies, looking some kind of way. Embarrassed, maybe? Or just tired...

"Tomorrow I'll come by to help ya with the new workout routine. You had some questions, right?"

Gordon nods, looking relieved. "Thanks for helping me with that. I hope it's not--"

"You're not troublesome, Doc," Barney says earnestly, effectively cutting him off. "Get some sleep. See ya tomorrow."

I Remember Harry Potter

It’s been 20 years since Harry Potter was first published. I was 11 years old (and still waiting on my Hogwarts letter, haha.) At first, I didn’t bother with it. In fact, I didn’t read the first book until Goblet of Fire came out. However, I’m glad I waited, because then it gave me more time to appreciate the books. To think of what I would be like in Hogwarts. To write my first HP fan characters. To crush hardcore on Severus Snape (and still do, but for entirely different reasons.) And I remember...

I remember working at a bookstore when book 7 came out and dressing up in my Hogwarts robes and wand and having a ball with kids and adults alike.

I remember buying Order of the Phoenix at its midnight release and staying up until 3 in the morning reading it. And how the spine bent when I threw it against the wall when Sirius died.

I remember spending every last penny I’d saved buying a special edition of Half-Blood Prince, even though after I read it, it became my least favorite book. (Still have the copy in its plastic though!)

I remember watching the Prisoner of Azkaban movie 3 times in one week when it came out in theatres.

I remember not knowing how to pronounce anyone’s names when reading the book, then being shocked when I watched Sorcerer’s Stone for the first time and was like, “So THAT’S how you say it!”

I remember in 2003, I went overseas to England and I desperately wanted to buy all of the UK versions of the books, but I could only afford one and I chose Chamber of Secrets. I still have the paperback.

I am someone who equally gets Sorted into Slytherin and Hufflepuff. I am a Slytherpuff, a Potterhead, and proud of it.

I remember seeing the Potter Puppet Pals, the fanmade videos, the music, the fanart, the fanfics, and how my first online RPG was a writing board dedicated to Harry Potter.

I remember when I first questioned Harry as a character. It was when I was in my early 20s and I started delving more into the subject of abuse. It’s when I realized Harry was an abused child, but nothing was ever said about it. Nothing was ever done about it. And then I questioned more.

I remember when I read my first “Dumbledore as great manipulator” fanfic and realized it wasn’t as far off as I thought. That he had condoned child abuse for generations. He knew about Tom Riddle’s abuse in the orphanage and did nothing, he knew of Severus Snape’s abuse by the Marauders and did nothing, and he knew of Harry Potter’s abuse at the Dursley’s AND DID NOTHING. That’s when I started to see Dumbledore as a terrible person.

I will never see Ron Weasley as anything but an abusive dickwad to people who should have been his friends. Bullying a girl thrown into a new world until she ends up in tears? Bullying her about a pet rat that he never liked or took care of anyway until she ends up in tears? Bullying her again after her first dance with her first date until she ends up in tears? And that’s just Hermione, don’t get me started on what he did to Harry.

I still remember my childhood love of these books. The wonder and the magic. I remember staying up til dawn reading the books, watching the movies, writing the fanfics. But I’m older now and while the magic is still there, it’s not the same. In the way that the Golden Trio grew up, so too did I. And, much like Harry, I’ve seen the wonders of magic, but I’ve also seen its pitfalls. Even so, I love these books and I will keep them with me forever.

Showreel Title - Time Wasting before Deadline but I’m HAPPY......

Started thinking about showreel many days ago. Although I always decided to make showreel after finish film but it needs ideas more earlier, my work style.

Actually I only need a ‘title page’ for it. Title page will have “Showreel” and my name. I drew some sketches, considered about “steam machine doors”, “puppets with boards”, “knights”, even “dragon dance”. Dragon dance was the most impossible idea, nice movement and feeling, but it’s still weird if there are words on dragon.

So I just ‘left’ it few days.

Than in one night, it was more after midnight. Something twinkling in my mind....not really. I think about why not make a title page like a video game? Maybe...a classical or typical or ‘old fashion’ pixel video game?

I mean, I’m extremely a video game fan, I always willing to show my love of video game in my works but didn’t get ‘suitable chance’. There’s a sentence “give a child a knife, he/she will try to cut everything”, I don’t want to be like that. I believe in everything must be used in ‘most’ fitting ways.

But this time it seem nice to have a title like that. It was really late so I just did some.....sketches.....

Looks like a fool rubbish game =L=. But fun. Of course I won’t use them.

After around two days, I clean my ideas. Decided to drew a pixel style title. And for this I have two ideas, one is a ‘flat’ simple title with a image background like Final Fantasy, the other is a more ‘RPG’ title like Dragon Quest and many main steam games. I choose the second one.

Started to draw it in Aseprite. If use full size of 1920x1080 it will be hard to notice it’s pixel so I decided to draw in a smaller size than turn it into 400%.

First night of drew it, sketch look nice.

Then I spent more than 1 hour clean the lines like unusual....simply colour it in grey levels.....

And soon I fond it looks.........shit........worse than sketch...........

It lost all the sharp edges.....clean but lost all feeling.....it looks like that kind....I usually don’t like ones.... feel really sad about it.... Led me fall into bed.......

After one or two days, I picked up it again. Back to the sketch I decided to keep all unclean lines, just follow its ‘rough’ style.

And the colour looks sucks.................

Looks better.........first time feeling tiny happy of the title.....although ‘showreel’ looks really NBA with this colours...........

And I wondered about whether to draw my names in red....because in China we usually avoid use red write names....old times only kings can sign in red, red means highest power. And mostly, in society name in red usually means he/she is death penalty, their lives will taken by highest power.

But now seems I haven’t another choice to save my colours. So just image I’m the king of infinite space.

With all these frustration, I have no patient drawing any background. Just made a simple, cloudy sky or complex flower sea texture.

I added some glowing effects in final showreel. It looks....better than my image.....lucky.....

I spent plenty time on a thing that only appear 1.5 seconds in my showreel......hmmmmm.....sound just like what I usually did.....
