Why you should book your trip to Cuba right now. And other things you may want to know.
Tumblr media
There is a LOT of interest in what’s happening in Cuba right now, with the last Castro brother stepping down as president and ending the infamous Castro regime. Naturally, the whole world has its eyes on Cuba and the potential opportunities.
For Americans, many are wondering if travel to Cuba is still permitted under the new administration’s regulations. Well, I’m happy to report that Americans CAN travel to Cuba, and I highly recommend it! Here is my story…
I first visited Cuba in May 2017 with a group of girlfriends and had an AMAZING time! I fell in love… literally! It’s been a year since then and I have been back to Cuba more times than I can count on one hand! You could say I’m a local at this point, since I’ve been recognized walking around the streets of Havana!
So for other Americans wondering: Can I go? What about the visa restrictions? Do I need a tour? etc etc… YES YOU CAN GO! There are multiple visa options you can select, such as “educational, "journalistic,” or my favorite vague “support for the Cuban people.” I have never had any issues at US customs on the way back, and have only been asked the usual, “where did you go, why did you go” and the occasional “did you bring me back any cigars?” lol.
You do NOT need a tour. It’s perfect for a solo getaway or a group trip. You can easily book an Airbnb for accommodations (I recommend staying near Old Havana) or if you’re on the wild side and want to look around, then there are “casa particulares” everywhere (which you will easily recognize with the sign that looks like an upside down anchor)- I believe there are websites for those too, I’ve just never had to use them. And there are apparently hostels too- again, I’ve not used them. If you’re worried about safety - I feel safer walking around Cuba than I do in the US. It is super safe, everyone is so friendly, and you will make friends along the way!
So… some of my favorites and highlights from my many trips… I hope this helps!
Depending on how much time you have, I would say spend 2-3 days (at least!) in Havana, and you would still have more to explore! Highly recommend a visit to Viñales which is tobacco farmlands. They have some cool caves, you can go horseback riding, check out the tobacco farm, and see the process. It’s really neat. Beautiful scenery. Small town countryside, very peaceful compared to Havana. One night there is good. Spend the day exploring, that’s all you really need. The other option is to the east of Havana a few hours to a beach town called Varadero, that’s the touristy resort beach city that’s popular. It’s really nice though. There’s also a closer beach in Havana, called Santa Maria Del mar. That’s the locals’ popular beach, so be aware- it’s not as “nice” in terms of fancy beach set up, chairs, and stuff like that, but it’s closer so if you’re short on time and want some beach time, that’s an option. Then Trinidad is also one of my faves so far- cute colonial rural town. And on the way maybe do a quick stop in Cienfuegos (but not the end of the world if you skip Cienfuegos, as there is not much there). But if you have time, definitely go to El Nicho waterfall!
As for things to do in Havana, it’s endless! They have some really cool museums with history and art. They have the traditional cabana show called Tropicana, and there’s another one called the Parisienne. I think there’s probably some other ones as well. Those are the two most popular and I would recommend Tropicana. The Malecon is the boardwalk, and you must stroll down it during the day, and I would also say at night because that’s where all the locals gather at night to drink and just have fun- it’s really cool to see. During the days, you can spend hours strolling around the streets of old Havana taking photos and admiring the architecture, people watching, etc. There’s a lot of beautiful churches. A little outside of Havana, like 30-40 minutes or so is a cool art space called FusterLandia. There’s also Callejon de Hamil, which is an Afro-centric inspired art area and they have dancing and parties during the day, but beware - it’s really crowded and Sunday noon is the busiest time I think. I’ve heard to be wary of pickpocketers there, but I’ve never had any issues with pickpocketers in Cuba. Then there’s all the other touristy stuff, like Hemingway‘s house, his local bars he used to go to like La Floridita, the National Theatre of Ballet (catch a show if you can!), etc.
Other general tips:
Take euros! The exchange rate is better and should be one euro for one CUC. If you use US dollars, there’s like a 10% tax, so you would get $0.80 for one CUC or something like that… no good.
THIS IS IMPORTANT:
Tip everyone who provides you with a service, if you can. They rely on tips to make ends meet, and the average Cuban makes maybe $20 or $30 a month (just imagine!) and that’s ONLY IF they have a good job. :( So I always err on the side of tipping- a little goes a long way for them.
Take hand sanitizer and toilet paper whenever you go out, because the bathrooms will not always provide this! Also, sunscreen!
Shoes-wise, be comfortable. Everyone is pretty chill there. You will do a lot of walking on uneven ground. Even for going out, I just wear some cute sandals.
As for going out, there is the famous art factory (Fabrica de Arte or “FAC”) which is a cool warehouse turned art museum/bar with live music — definitely check that out! Then there is the Casa de la Musica, which has live salsa music. That place is cool but I don’t like it so much because there wasn’t really a lot of room to dance. But the music is good. Then there’s this old fort bar near the water called 1830, and they have live music sometimes and lots of salsa dancing too. There’s also King Bar which is kinda small and gets pretty crowded, but it’s great dancing and fun. :)
And if you’re short on time and want to make sure to hit all the highlights, or if you want a personalized tour with a local expert, my boyfriend works for one of the best tour companies in Cuba. He can customize a tour for your interests and can be as involved or hands off as you like. And if you just want someone to help maneuver around town, translate for you, and take you around so you don’t get too ripped off - it’s a good option to hire a tour guide. Feel free to message me and I’ll provide his contact info so you can be in touch with him about his tours. :)
I know you’re going to love it! Please comment with any questions and your experiences traveling to Cuba, and feel free to share this with anyone who you think might be interested! Happy planning!
