Metro RP2350 is wrappin' up testing ✨🐢
This week we got our Metro RP2350 boards
https://blog.adafruit.com/2024/11/11/metro-rp2350-now-with-bigger-better-rp2350b/
back and after fixing the pin direction and rerouting
the whole thing, it came up and pretty much works perfectly! Just one component needed a swap - we were able to test all GPIO, analog inputs, MicroSD slot, PSRAM, LEDs & NeoPixel, user button, I2C/SPI/UART, aaand power supplies. The 5V supply is great, we got a nice clean 5V out at 2A+ from 12V DC in. The last thing to check is the HSTX port, which gives us DVI access, and it works, thanks to this festive turtle demo!
We're aiming to get this into the shop before the end of the year, wouldn't that be smashing?

i mean, sure. sure you can definitely give the price it would cost to buy enough of these 32 gb microsd cards in order to weigh as much as a stick of butter.
at this point it does make me wonder what the cheapest amount of capacity it would be to bulk-buy if you really really needed 100 grams of microsd cards specifically, especially since all the really small capacity ones can be more expensive to source than larger ones cuz nothing needs them anymore

Tumblr media
Samsung Galaxy A56

The A56 is a must-see for anybody searching for flagship-like capabilities at a lower price. Samsung is pushing the limits of mid-range smartphones.

feels weird to go looking for micro SD cards and know i don't actually need something with more than like 8 gigs of memory for what i'm thinking about doing but trying to find anything smaller than 64 gigs is like looking for a needle in a haystack. is this how my mom felt when i was a kid and bugged her to buy a Cool Flash Drive with a whole gigabyte of memory on it? is this how people just a few years older than me felt when gigabytes became the "standard" measurement, with terabytes being "only for BUCKWILD MASSIVE use cases" and megabytes being "nobody makes these anymore, why would they"?

love the data compactness
dunno who but some dude found that carrier pigeon + 1tb mircroSDs was faster than internet for bulk data transfer
also pretty sure they wear out faster or something (maybe?) compared to low capacity cards
I can’t believe 1TB microsd cards are like a thing that exists, thats like crossing a line, thats alarmingly close to playing god, where the FUCK are they PUTTING it

Rasping
I maintain and publish a couple open-source libraries that are cross-compiled for 32-bit Linux-on-ARM platforms such as the Raspberry Pi. I think it's important to test the code I publish. Unfortunately, my test machine (a Pi 400) can't execute those binaries because its operating system is too old: in particular, its "stdc++" library isn't recent enough.
A colleague in Cairo, Egypt told me various ways to upgrade the library by installing a newer compiler on the Pi. I tried them last night without success.
My current plan is to install a newer version of the operating system. This involves downloading a disk image and writing it to the Pi's MicroSD card. To do that, I need a USB-MicroSD adapter for my HP laptop. They cost about $10 or $20 online, but I'd rather not wait for shipping. So I'm running out to Staples this morning to buy an adapter.

PSA: Samsung microSDs with A2 rating don't support Command Queuing (CQ) on Raspberry Pi 5
All Samsung microSD Cards with an A2 rating currently ( 12/2024 ) don't support the new SD Command Queuing feature of the Raspberry Pi 5 devices.
The CQ feature is enabled by default in the latest Raspberry Pi OS images ( tested on 2024-11-19-raspios-bookworm ) and needs to be deactivated for EVO Select, EVO Plus, PRO Plus and PRO Ultimate Cards.
Adding the line:
dtparam=sd_cqe=off
in the file
/boot/firmware/config.txt
does the trick.

We designed and prototyped an RP2350 Metro a few months ago, and it worked OK, but we were really short on pins, which meant a lot of annoying compromises - so we ended up only fabbing the RP2350 Feather to start. With that design flying off the shelves, It's time to revisit the Metro. We wanted to jam-pack this design, and with the extra GPIO on the B we have plenty of peripherals: the 22-pin HSTX for DVI output, Stemma QT port, NeoPixel, JST 3-SH SWD debug port, 16MB flash, an extra spot for PSRAM, MicroSD card with SPI or SDIO connections, and 5V buck converter that can give us 2 Amp easily, which we'll need since we also have a USB Host port pinout for connecting USB peripherals. We even managed to get a couple of niceties like switchable power for the USB host power, a USB boot button as user input, and an SD card detect GPIO.

Preface: The micro sd card in question is a SanDisk - Ultra PLUS 128GB microSDXC UHS-I Memory Card Phone is Galaxy A15 5G The problem: Got done with a hike. Was going to share some pics here but notice a segment of the pics I just took were not showing their preview images (yet still had a file name). I then restart my phone and when I reboot none of my pics are showing up. Only small fraction of the card's data is showing up. I then look at the drive on windows, nothing in the DCIM folder on the sd card is showing up. Out of curiosity I take the microsd, plug it into the adapter and run recuva on it. Hours later it comes up with about 60k deleted files and a good portion of it is recovered. I still have to go through the damage because there is still a lot of pics missing. I'm just curious on why it happened in the first place. I've got some ideas but I'm up for more theories. Even the outlandish one like someone was testing out terror superweapons in a hiking park in Bergen County.
