Hi! You still looking for art blogs? My art is tagged under "My art"! So original! 😅
Hey, if it aint broke, don't fix it! I am a fan of practicality, personally :D Oh shit!! Your lines are crisp. Nice!! I love that you have art from such a wide timespan here! Honestly, I'm really impressed with your progress over the years. I think one way that is particularly noticeable is in your solid drawing/construction/3-Dimensional aspect to your work. It really feels like clothes are wrapping around limbs and that guns exist in 3D space. That's hard!!
Tumblr media
Also, excellent taste. I love the Grumps, and the game Gyaru designs are so cute. I'd love to get a T-Shirt sometime (I gotta offload some of my other ones first, though...) Also!! Yasha 🥺 You draw shoes really well!! That's also something that's not easy to do. You've got some really fun character interaction in your newer work as well. Thanks so much for sharing!!

J.J. & Jeff (TG-16 Mini)
Tumblr media
If you're launching a console and don't have any major characters of your own to push it, the next best thing is to license some until you do. SEGA used this to great effect with the Mega Drive, using Mickey Mouse, Joe Montana, Michael Jackson, and so on to drive interest until they hit on Sonic. For NEC and Hudson's part, they also nabbed a celebrity license. Kato Cha and Shimura Ken, former members of rock band/comedy group The Drifters, had a hot new show on Japanese TV. Kato-chan Ken-chan Gokigen TV was a variety show featuring the comedy stylings of the pair, with a viewer-submitted home video segment notably proving as the inspiration for America's Funniest Home Videos. Is that still on? Okay, I just checked. Yes, it is. That means that show has lasted around thirty seasons longer than Gokigen TV, which finished its run in 1992 after six seasons.
Kato and Shimura's careers were just beginning, and Shimura in particular became one of Japan's most well-known TV celebrities until his tragic passing in 2020. So in some ways, grabbing the license for the duo to use in a title for the 1987 Japanese launch of the PC Engine was a huge get for NEC and Hudson. There were a couple of issues to work through, of course. The first being to figure out what kind of game could be made from a comedy variety show. One of the recurring segments on the show cast the two as largely incompetent detectives, and that must have seemed like sufficient meat for Hudson to do what it was doing best at the time: a platformer.
I must once again remind everyone that this game originally released in late 1987. It predates Mega Man. It's not that far out from Mickey Mouscapade. Just a year after the original Wonder Boy, which is where it seems to draw much of its gameplay inspiration from. The game came out in North America in 1990, and that combined with the decent presentation mask its age at first glance. But this is indeed a relatively early scrolling platformer, which explains a lot of its shortcomings. It's really difficult, has a lot of opaque secrets, keeps a score, effectively runs on a tight timer, and requires a trick to continue if you get a game over (I+II+RUN). It plays a lot like Wonder Boy/Adventure Island, but with more scatological and absurd humor. You can also choose between two characters, but it's recommended to use J.J./Kato since he has better grip. It's a slippery enough game as it is.
The other issue with the license is that Kato-chan and Ken-chan were really only famous in Japan. When NEC decided to bring the PC Engine to the North American market, this game needed some reworking. The celebrities were swapped out for original characters, J.J. and Jeff. A lot of the juvenile humor was replaced, likely so as not to upset parents. Some things from the show were kept and seem even stranger with their context stripped out. By the time the game arrived, the platformer situation in console gaming had dramatically changed. This really wasn't up to expectations gameplay-wise, but its bizarre stylings allowed it to find some fans anyway. This, by the way, is one of the many games on the mini-console to only offer one version, and Konami obviously chose to go with the one that didn't require any expensive re-licensing. A lot of Japanese fans were very annoyed that the J.J. & Jeff version was the only one available here.
My feelings on this game are that within its context, it's fine. It's not especially good, but it's not awful either. The presentation and constant stream of gags help it stand out, if nothing else. Considering it was just the fourth game on the system, I think it's alright. I'd certainly have preferred getting this over The Kung Fu/China Warrior. And as for its place on this mini-console, I think it's a good pick. Like it or lump it, J.J. & Jeff is tied in with the system's identity.

Today I beat Mickey Mousecapade. Another game covered in Nintendo Power #003.
I was mildly obsessed with Mickey Mouse as a kid, I loved him and all his friends, and I thought Mickey and Minnie were a really cute duo that I didn't get to see together in the cartoons often enough, I was a lot more drawn to Mickey than Bugs Bunny. I kind of did a complete 180 on that when I grew up though, I much prefer Looney Tunes now and it's hard to even look at Mickey and not think about Disney's nasty corporate side. But there's still some fondness for him deep down. But anyway.. as a kid I always wanted to play the games based on their box art, but I didn't really rent video games in the NES era.
Tumblr media
Nintendo Power's coverage of the game was pretty worthless. They stopped just short of the levels that actually would need some hints, as it was a lost woods style maze with an invisible door you need to shoot a few times to reveal. The game was a mid level platformer/shooter. Mickey and Minnie gain the ability to shoot stars in the first level for some reason. It's deceptively tough and requires you to practice caution, as hazards can suprise you pretty quick. There's no continues here. I saved between levels, but a skilled player could probably pull this off, it's a very short game with only 5 levels, and level 2 and 4 being incredibly short.
The game has you control Micky, but Minnie follows behind and copies your moves. Kind of like Tails in Sonic, except without the path finding part where Tails will move on his own to go back behind Sonic. Minnie can't take Damage, which is nice, I actually exploited the AI to take out the level 4 boss with her and avoiding damage... but if she falls in a pit, you both die... and it's a cool concept but it can be very distracting and throw you off.
The game is apparently set in Wonder Land, as you can see from Mickey finding Alice I guess? But only the final area has any familiar enemies from that movie, the Card soldiers, and the Walrus as a miniboss... the final boss is actually Maleficent.
You can tell this is a Hudson game, it's got a lot in common with the look and sound of the Adventure Island games, the hud is pretty similar too but it doesn't deplete over time. Do not recommend to the casual player but could be fun for people that want a short and tough NES game to try and run through. I didn't hate it but I'm unlikely to replay it. Magical Quest is still my Mickey Mouse game of choice but i've not played much of the others.

Red! I’m finally watching Game Grumps. I started with the Resident Evil 7 VR playlist since I recently played through that game, and I’m really enjoying it so far :) and its definitely cause of you that I decided to give them a try!
I am going to hug you very hard and kiss you on the cheek maybe even the neck area too who knows there’s a lot of love happening.
Also we’re officially friends now you’ve completed the ritual.
There’s a lot to watch. Like insane amounts of content. Here’s some iconic fucking stuff tho:
Action Girlz Racing aka Dan is an old man and has problems driving.
Literally the whole of Mario Maker is pure gold.
The one time they ate gross beans and it was funny.
The one time they ate a giant gummy bear and it was also funny.
Mickey Mouscapades aka that one time Arin found a voice so funny and stupid the video is nothing but Dan trying not to die from respiratory problems caused by laughing too much.
The Teletubbies game. I can’t…explain this one.
Battlekid. This one is… this is the one.
Mario 64 was all worth it for the Mark Zuckerberg story alone tbh.
And uh………..expert level watch; that one time they did Pole Dancing with Markiplier.
Congratulations you’ve found….whatever the fuck this show is about. Welcome.
I love you.
