San Michelle Aveva un Gallo, 1972
The titular character ere, Giulio Manieri, is sentenced to 10 years in solitary confinement. To pass the time, he play acts as different members of his anarchist (internationalist) group.
I love this scene! Each character is so well defined despite being the same actor, and the concerns they're airing out about the political movement are interesting and challenging.

"The mother of Pope Clement VII remains an enigmatic figure. Pieraccini cites a record of the Pazzi conspriacy by Antonio da San Gallo in which he wrote that Giuliano had a son, aged one, by the time he was killed in the Pazzi conspiracy in 1478. The mother was ' a woman of the Gorini, his friend. The said Lorenzo went to see him and then gave him to the care of the same Antonio, where he stayed until his seventh year. The said son had the name of Giulio and was born on the 6th March 1478. Seraccini is cited as stating that she was Fioretta di Antonio di Michele di Iacopo del Ciptadino corazzaio. Pieraccini however states that the mother's name was certainly 'Fioretta', but that all else is unknown.
An unpleasant paragraph then follows outlining the importance of knowing who the mother was, owing: ' on the laws of hereditary biology, the knowledge of whether Fioretta was daughter of nobles or plebs must be important, for example, to recognise the inheritance of particular refined talents or dispositions, presumably more developed in the Florentine upper classes than in the lower ones.' Giulio had himself declared legitimate during Giovanni's cardinalate, saying that his mother had been secretly married to Giuliano. The eighteenth-century Jesuit antiquarian, Giuseppe Richa, in an attempt to ensure the Medici pope's legitimacy to the throne of S. Peter, repeated this claim of a secret marriage. Hibbert follows the Gorini reference, and identifies her as Fioretta Gorini. 'This boy, whose mother soon afterwards died, was adopted by Lorenzo'. Young identifies her as Antonia Gorini." - Women on the margins: the beloved and the mistress in Renaissance Florence

Preaching Blues
Good-for-nothing man's blues
Jean-Michel Basquiat
Text by Kunichi Nomura

Those who grew up in the 80s will be familiar with Basquiat's paintings. His style is somewhat primitive, as if a young child with paint and brushes splattered color onto canvas or pieces of wood. These works, in which names and words dance across the canvas like codes, were imitated and consumed in all sorts of settings. When I first saw Basquiat's paintings, my reaction was similar to when I saw a Picasso painting in art class at school: "Even I could draw that." As a child, I couldn't understand why Basquiat's paintings were so highly acclaimed.
Basquiat was a superstar born out of the New York art scene of the 1980s, which was booming during the bubble economy. Born in 1960 to a Haitian father and a Puerto Rican mother in Prussia, Basquiat spoke English, French, and Spanish from an early age, and when his son showed signs of artistic talent, his parents gave him a gifted education, taking him to art museums. After his parents divorced and his son moved to Puerto Rico, Basquiat went to high school and started a project with his friends. Using the name "SAM ○," an abbreviation of "Same Old Shit," they tagged poems and phrases as pseudo-religion on walls downtown. This activity, unlike the tagging that was rampant on subways at the time, attracted attention from those around him as it evoked poetry and philosophy. Having wanted to be famous from an early age, Basquiat decided to drop out of high school, ran away from home and was disowned by his parents. He started working as a postal worker, hanging around friends' houses in Manhattan to make money. He began making and selling cards and T-shirts. In the late '70s, No Wave and graffiti were popular in New York, and many clubs and discos were filled with creative, ephemeral energy. Basquiat played freely in the New York nightlife. He went to the Mudd Club and studios, hung out with the then unknown Madonna, and formed a band with Vincent Gallo called Grey, performing at venues such as CBGB and Max's Kansas City. It was around this time that he appeared on Glenn O'Brien's cult show TV Party and in a Blondie music video, steadily spreading his name as the face of Downtown.
For Basquiat, a major turning point in his life as an artist was his participation in the group exhibition "Times Square Show." His unique style of work was brought into the limelight, and after a review of his work was published in an art magazine, he signed a contract with gallerist Annina Nosei, held a successful solo exhibition, and rose to the top of the art world as a darling of the times. The art world, which had been suffocated by conceptual art and minimal art, enthusiastically supported Basquiat along with artists such as Julian Schnabel and David Salle, a group known as Neo-Expressionism. And as if in response, Basquiat painted nonstop. Partying day and night, endless drugs, and money was all around Basquiat. The dreadlocked Basquiat painted while dressed in expensive Armani suits. Basquiat was a star not only in New York but also in Europe.
He was successful in the art world, and soon, at the suggestion of a gallerist, he began working with Andy Warhol, who was his hero along with William S. Burroughs. This collaboration, a masterpiece, a product of commercialism for money, and controversial, attracted more than enough attention to make an impact on the world. However, Basquiat believed the rumors that Warhol was using him, and he began to distance himself from him. This was perhaps Basquiat's peak, when he appeared on the cover of The New York Times, marking the peak of his career as an artist. However, the more success he gained, the more people around him distanced himself from him, and the more drugs he took. He was an imaginary star created by gallerists, a flower in the twilight of an era dominated by commercialism. Warhol was the only friend he had who could understand him, but when Warhol died of an illness in 1980, he could no longer see anything ahead. Basquiat died of a heroin overdose in his New York studio in August 1988. He was 27 years old, an age considered a dead end for rock stars, and his life was one that would never allow him to progress beyond that age.
Basquiat's thousands of works are still printed in large quantities and scattered around the world. It is unclear whether they were real art or fabricated fiction. However, in recent years, major retrospectives have been held in Brooklyn and Paris. The real paintings on display at these major retrospectives are full of a sense of dynamism that cannot be felt in prints, with paints dancing and exploding, and long lines form every day in various places in order to see the real thing.

On se prend à rêver...

San Michelle Aveva un Gallo, Paolo & Vitorio Taviani, 1972
I'm starting to wonder if there is any movie from the 70s that isn't good? This is a movie about early anarchism in Italy, when there was still a monarchy there that details the life of one of the activists from that time. This clip here is as he goes to face the firing squad.
My perception towards "movies about politics" is a vaguely negative one, mostly because I imagine them to be boring, and again I'm proven wrong with this film.
These old movies have a very particular paired down sound design that I really love. In this clip, the directors play with the imagination of the character as well as with film as a medium as they insert the music on and off interspersed with his dialogue.
There's SO much narrative tension in this movie, and it really like!! you know!? if you haven't watched a slow movie in awhile you forget that they're really so much fun to watch. Everything in this film has such a sense of purpose and specificity that I don't think we really get in our more "maximalist" films of today.

Raza Jaffrey as Dr. Neal Hudson, an ER attending physician. A British-Indian former surgeon, his approach is quieter and more people-oriented, than his mentor Dr. Rorish. He connected with Christa during her first year of residency. In "Hail Mary", Hudson becomes a surgical attending, and is once again assigned to the ER (season 1).[7][8]
Bonnie Somerville as Dr. Christa Lorenson, a mature first-year resident. She was married with a son who died of brain cancer. Her experience and her divorce inspired her to attend medical school (season 1).[7]
Melanie Chandra as Dr. Malaya Pineda, a first-year resident (seasons 1–2). She went to medical school and did her internship at Angels Memorial, and is more familiar with the ER. She is a lesbian, who was once involved with a resident when she was a medical student.
William Allen Young as Dr. Rollie Guthrie, an ER attending physician with a very nurturing style; he takes Angus under his wing in his first days in the ER. Guthrie's wife committed suicide, a death that strained his relationship with his son, a surgeon. During season 2, Guthrie is diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, and undergoes corrective neurological surgery to delay the onset of symptoms. Guthrie had a daughter who died from carbon monoxide poisoning while Guthrie tried to save his son from a similar death.
Harry Ford as Dr. Angus Leighton, a first-year resident. His father is on the hospital board. He feels overshadowed by that and by the achievements of his older brother, a former resident, but slowly grows in confidence. In his second year he is encouraged to transfer and become a surgical resident.
Benjamin Hollingsworth as Dr. Mario Savetti, a first-year resident. He grew up poor and sees emergency medicine as his way out. He worked as a bartender before medical school.
Luis Guzmán as Jesse Salander, known as "Mama". A senior nurse who manages the residents, Jesse is tough but caring and supportive of the students. He and Dr. Rorish have a long-term, close friendship.
Boris Kodjoe as Dr. Will Campbell, Chief of Surgery. In season 2 he is assigned as the new Chief of the combined Surgery and Emergency medicine department in order to save costs, causing strife between him and Rorish. Campbell has a disabled daughter (season 2–3; recurring in season 1).
Jillian Murray as Dr. Heather Pinkney, a surgical resident who becomes involved with Mario.(season 2; recurring in season 1). He quickly ends it when he hears about her side relationship with Dr. Campbell. She gets in further trouble when it's revealed she's providing Angus with Adderall. When confronted by Campbell, she threatens to turn their past relationship into a sexual harassment case.
Noah Gray-Cabey as Elliot Dixon, a first-year resident in the ER (season 2-3).
Emily Tyra as Noa Kean, an ER resident and former dancer. She begins a relationship with Dr. Mario Savetti (season 3; recurring season 2)
Emily Alyn Lind as Ariel Braeden (season 3; guest seasons 1–2)
Shiri Appleby as Dr. Carla Niven, a former resident at Angels Memorial and Malaya's ex-girlfriend. She is diagnosed with leukemia while pregnant, and refuses treatment not wanting to harm the baby.
Christina Vidal as Dr. Gina Perello, the replacement Director of the Emergency Department at Angels Memorial, who takes over when Dr. Taylor is put on leave.
Gabrielle Carteris as Amy Wolowitz, R.N., a nurse in the Emergency Department.
Meagan Good as Dr. Grace Adams, returns to the ER after volunteering in Haiti. She is Dr. Neal Hudson's ex-girlfriend.
Season 2[edit]
