Monday morning, the nerves were long gone, her prep work was largely done and the magnitude of the looming moment finally hit Michelle Crechiolo hard.
That night, when the Penguins battled the Philadelphia Flyers, she would become the first female broadcaster to ever call a regular season Penguins game.
When Crechiolo realized that morning that she would be a trailblazer and perhaps an inspiration to other women in hockey, her thoughts drifted to one of her favorite photos — a picture of her when back she was playing in Mini Mites.
“It’s making me emotional thinking about it now,” she later told the Post-Gazette, her voice quivering. “I’ve got the Jofa gloves, wooden stick. I’ve got on a little pink turtleneck under all my equipment. And I’m just posing and cheesing, and I’m missing a tooth. And I’m just so happy to be a hockey player.
“I’m just thinking about what that little girl would say if I told her that I was doing this, doing color commentary on a Pittsburgh Penguins radio broadcast. It’s just so surreal. It really is. I stuck with hockey because I loved it, and it’s led me here. And I just couldn’t be more grateful to be in this position. It’s wild.”
Around 10 a.m. Sunday, Crechiolo received a text message from Leo McCafferty, the Penguins’ vice president of content and production. He told her they believed she would be a great option to step in for Phil Bourque, who was sick. He asked if she would be up for taking his place on the radio broadcast.
“I was like, ‘Oh, hell yeah,’” she said with a laugh. “That was my response.”
When she hung up the phone, she had a brief moment of nervousness, wondering what she had just gotten herself into. But then she just felt “pure excitement.” She rushed downstairs to share the news with her boyfriend, Chuck.
“That’s when it hit me. ‘Oh my god, I’m going to be the color analyst on a National Hockey League broadcast between the Penguins and Flyers,’” she said.
Not only that, Crechiolo is the first woman to do play-by-play or color commentary on a local TV or radio broadcast for any of Pittsburgh’s three big-league teams.
Once Crechiolo calmed down, she went about her business as usual. She headed to UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex to watch practice, then in the locker room she gathered as many “nuggets” as she could for Monday’s broadcast.
Sidney Crosby, Jake Guentzel, Tristan Jarry and Rickard Rakell were among the players who gave her support and advice — or a good-natured ribbing.
When they began broadcasting her quick hits up on the Jumbotron, Crechiolo was anxious about stepping into an on-camera role. But something coach Mike Sullivan said about a player making his NHL debut resonated with her.
“He said, ‘It’s not about putting pressure on yourself. You’re there for a reason. It’s about getting excited for the opportunity, because you’re just doing something you love to do,’” Crechiolo said. “And that was how I felt about this.”

Remember to read about the contestants before voting!
Whip-Poor-Will
The Whip-Poor-Will has a distinctive call that it puts out during the night time, when it is the most active. They are also known to lay their eggs based on the lunar cycle, and on average eggs will hatch ten days before a full moon. The nestlings will often move themselves about while they are in the nest, as a way to make the nest harder to rob. Learn More!
Secretary Bird
With big, voluptuous eyelashes, the Secretary Bird lives in Africa. They are known for their long legs, used to strike down snakes, lizards, insects, and other small creatures. Although we often think of them as eating mainly snakes, that is not actually a large part of their diet. It consists mainly of insects. They will strike with 5 times their own body weight, and will sometimes hunt in small groups. Learn More!

One think that irks me a little bit is how much people are quick to associate animal traits to stereotyped gendered traits in human society. Like, we've all probably heard the wolf = masculine and cat = feminine thing at some stage, but may I present to you the secretarybird:

Credit: Michel Bourque, eBird. Image ID in alt text.
Male and female secretarybirds do not exhibit dimorphism- they look identical. But the amount of times I've seen people refer to them as 'queen' or 'she' or otherwise feminine just annoys be a bit. I get that 'long eyelashes', 'long legs', 'elegance', 'good hair' and 'makeup' are seen to be feminine traits, but ugh. As a trans person, not a huge fan.
And I suppose the name 'secretary', a job that is stereotypically gendered to be female, doesn't help either.

Animal of the Day!
Secretarybird (Sagittarius serpentarius)

Conservation Status- Endangered
Habitat- Africa
Size (Weight/Length)- 1.5 m; 2.1 m wingspan
Diet- Insects; Snakes; Crabs; Small mammals
Cool Facts- The secretarybird has long legs and it knows how to use them. Upon first glance, the secretarybird may look more similar to a fish eating heron than a dangerous bird of prey. Capable of flight secretarybirds prefer to run, up to 32 kilometers in a single day. During this time, they search for food. Upon finding a mouse or snake, the secretarybird will stomp on it. Each kick delivers 195 Newtons of force on the small animal, 5 times the secretarybird’s body weight. This usually kills their prey in a single kick, the animal then being eaten whole. Due to habitat loss and overgrazing from livestock, the secretarybird is loosing habitat and prey quicker than it can keep up with. Luckily, zoos participate in captive breeding programs and their numbers are still strong in the numerous wildlife preserves across Africa.
Rating- 12/10 (We’ve seen some long legs but daaaaaammmmn.)

if anyone wants to read remy’s application ! the characterization is p much the same.
BASICS :
hello i’m rick, rick astley, but u can call me kviii or kviiilyn. jk im iris and this is my crib. i’m 21 years old, living in the PST timezone and i use she/they pronouns.
TRIGGERS :
i have an admin lux trigger, so if she could tag herself that’d be grviii thx.
FULL NAME with maiden name, if applicable : moon juim remy bourque
CURRENT AGE : 23
GENDER AND PRONOUNS : cisfemale, she/her
LOYALTY : neutral but lbr the destler men are daddies. ( #DestlerDaddy )
OCCUPATION : secretary to michel lefèvre ( aka Daddy #1 )
CRIMINAL OCCUPATION : none for now but she probably unwittingly gets herself into some shit.
FACE CLAIM : son naeun
INSIGHT :
I was torn between a few of the characters that were released before her, but after reading Remy in bed the night before my first final of the semester, I knew that she was the one for me. Everything about her biography, from her two left feet, to the little fuzzy roommate she sometimes throws a stiletto at when it catches her off guard, to the fact that she’s “disliked by everyone”, made me fall in love with her. I could instantly see myself spending the rest of my days with this Certified Mess™ of a woman. I know it sounds like I’m proposing to marry her, but I would gladly do so if it saves her from tripping along the cobblestone paths on the way to her work. She’s oddly charming, the kind that you didn’t think you would like, and she’s just not afraid to be herself. She doesn’t have a filter and she may rub people the wrong way, but that’s their problem not hers. All she wants in life is to be happy and carefree, is that too hard to ask ?
HEADCANONS :
MI CASA, SU CASA ; Remy was her sister’s roommate first; having let herself in one night with her large pink suitcase in tow after having had enough of their family home in the 20th Arrondissement. How tacky was it to still be living at home at twenty-one, when her sister had moved out years ago to attend university. So she sauntered over early in the evening when her sister was studying and wheedled her way into her heart and her apartment. From then on, she crashed on her sister’s couch for over a year, and then when Remy’s sister started dating this cute intellectual from the history department of her school, it was like Remy had the apartment to herself — especially during the lovers’ honeymoon phase when they would go out into the city almost every night. It was nice that her sister was dating and happy, at least until he decided to move into their already cramped space. He always tried to clean up around the house, namely in Remy’s little area, and always pointed out some cheap rooms for rent or studios to her. ( “That’s such a cute space ! But I don’t think it’ll fit all three of us.” ) But then they started to get even more domestic and suddenly Remy felt like the ultimate third wheel, which is not ideal at all. She’s a pretty young ( single ) thing in the city of love, and if the offer ever came up, she couldn’t bring someone back to an apartment that had all the accouterments of a serious relationship. There are pictures of her sister and her boyfriend being cute and kissy for goodness sake ! Not at all the bachelorette vibe she wants. So she applied for the job at the theatre for the money and finally moved out. And her sister and her boyfriend were so nice about it too ! They helped her pack her things and move into her new flat, and even brought her a little housewarming gift.
THIRD EYE ; If you ever cross Remy on the street, there is a 75% chance that she will pull you aside and tell you about your aura or your zodiac that day. She’s got a certified third eye for these kind of things. There was this old lady in the park that Remy would pass on the way to school growing up, and she would always talk about prophecies and read the little lines on her palm. Remy always found it charming. In fact, she even asked the sweet lady to teach her. In her high school years, Remy spent most of her allowance money on crystals and medallions and how-to books from the incense filled shops on the outskirts of town. She would watch youtube videos and search sketchy websites about astrology and tea leaf readings. The hobby has died down years ago, she’s not that adamant about it anymore, but she’ll still turn to giving unsolicited advice and palm readings to whomever she feels has a good vibe.
JE M’APPELLE ; She changed her name the moment she found out she could, all chubby-cheeked and sparkling eyes. It’s not that she didn’t like the name Juim Moon ( or was it Moon Juim, she’s seen her mama write it both ways on forms that she’s not sure which ways is proper anymore ) it’s just that she didn’t FEEL like a Juim. She never really did if she were to be honest. Which makes her sound like an ungrateful brat, her grandmother named her after all, but when you don’t feel it you don’t feel it. When she started secondary school, she introduced herself as Remy — a new brand to distance herself from the mess and a half that was a 14-year-old Juim. She was a new woman, with a new name and a new moniker. Remy Bourque. Both chosen from things she came across in the streets, a street sign here, a clothing label there. She tested and selected various variations until there was a combination she could see herself sticking with. It was cute and utterly French-sounding, things that she saw herself as, and she wouldn’t want anything less.
QUESTION ONE : What was your childhood like?
‘ Well, ’ she straightens up in her seat, flipping her hair back and clearing her throat just the slightest like she’s getting ready for a speech. ‘ I was born and raised in Paris, believe it or not, just across from the Square Jardin Gare de Charonne — well, not really just across, but like in a complex near the gardens. My papa was a pharmacy tech and my mama tried her hand at a bunch of jobs over our childhood. She checked groceries at one point, and worked in a flower shop, and did some clerical work for a law office. Really simple stuff that got her out of the house when me and my sister were off at school. And my sister and I, ’ Remy gestured with her hand, her wrist limp, ‘ we were just close as can be. I mean, she is just fantastic — she’s in school right now, she wants to be a pharmacist like our papa. She’s a real smart one, you know ? It’s just too bad she’s gotten kind of boring over the years. ’
She makes a full stop, then looks at the others in the room, ‘ Oh please don’t tell her I said that. I love her and all, it’s just that the stuff she talks about can be a bit dull. ’ She gives a small smile, grateful for the discretion. ‘ Okay, back to your question. Um, ’ she thinks for a second, trying to gather her thoughts, ‘ my childhood was great — in a word. I come from humble beginnings, my parents never spoiled me, and I think I turned out pretty great. ’
QUESTION FOUR : Where is your favorite place in Paris?
‘ Oh this is easy ! ’ A full smile stretches across her face as she leans in, ‘ There’s this café on the way to the Theatre that I pass every morning. It’s usually not that crowded when I walk by, just a few commuters going in and out for breakfast, but I always just have to stop and smell the freshly baked croissants and the coffee that they just brewed. Every time I get my paycheck, I go in for a baguette and their special pâtisserie of the day. It just reminds me of all the things I love about Paris, you know ? ’
QUESTION SEVEN : What is your favorite way to pass the time?*
She looks at the others sheepishly, like she’s holding a secret, but let’s be honest, she doesn’t hold many secrets to her heart. ‘ People always give me strange looks when I say this, but I love people watching, ’ she admits. ‘ It’s kind of a weird, guilty pleasure that I’ve had for as long as I can remember. Like I just get so invested into these people’s lives when they walk by, and I come up with these histories and motivations for them. It’s like a game of Sims, except I can’t tell people to go into a pool and then take the ladder to get out away. ’ She giggles, the noise high and flitting, ‘ Gosh, that’s so bad to say. It’s fun though, if you have nothing else grabbing your attention. ’
EVERYTHING ELSE :
do u want to see the resume she submitted to michel ?
( jk here’s the actual resume. she pulled an elle woods and sprayed it with her perfume to make it scented )

You were born to fly. When you were still small, your mother told you at night, her cool thin fingers brushing dark hair away from your forehead, that you took a bow after your first breath and nearly somersaulted out of the doctor's arms. She said that was when she knew, right at that moment, that you would be something extraordinary, that people all around the world would covet the person you were to become, but you mustn't let them clip your wings. 'My little Zvezda. Such a pretty bird.' she would croon as your tiny restless form would fight against the weight of sleep pressing you to your bed. You used to insist you were wide awake right until the moment you suddenly weren't. You still do. You always want to be awake, moving, alive. You want to experience everything that life has to offer you. But what's always come most natural is the The feeling of the wind against your face, throwing your hair back and stinging your cheeks. You were in gymnastic classes when you were four, acrobatics when you were nine. When you were fifteen you became an aerialist. Now the posters with your name on them boast a stage persona you know your mother would be proud of, something that she dreamt of when you were no more than a foot tall. Miss Fleck! they say, The aerial exoticism! Half bird, half woman! You appreciate the half-bird portion of that more than anything else, you think. Though bird might be a bit of an exaggeration, you're certainly no more than half woman, and it's nice to have all of your own very real identity made public, acknowledged in a way that, while you know it's not understood as you mean it, is still a comfort.
Those posters were made before Erik found you. You had another manager once, though you think you've forgotten his name. He came up with that tagline, printed it on old fashioned posters and plastered them around town. One show at an old circus venue halfway out of the country and then he was gone. Took all your earnings from the show as well as his promotional and advisement fee with him. That was how Erik found you, really. Penniless and broken, wondering if you'd ever fly again. You like to think that his calling you and your siblings special was only directed at you. It was really quite a shock when Sebastian started to sing, busted out with some golden deep baritone you'd never known he had. But you were still Miss Fleck, and that would never change. It might be awhile before you really get your wings back, but for now you can do acrobatic tricks on Erik's stage as he helps you collect your feathers once more.
associates: antonin petrovic, erik destler, gigi destler, kristos vallas, lea jammes, lisette sorelli, lucien rousseau, meg giry, rahim ahmadi, and xavier carmen

CHERRY LANGLEY, ODESSA FAUST, AND REMY BOURQUE
Every girl needs a good group of gal pals, and it's never been hard to find yours, no matter where you are. The theatre was no different, and it's even a little funny that you're the glue holding your little group together. Normally they'd never mesh well together at all; Odessa's too self-absorbed, Cherry's too tender-hearted, and Remy's too gossipy. But you make it all work, and they can only all get along if you're there. It's comforting in a selfish sort of way, knowing that they'll never run off and go have fun without you simply because it isn't possible. But together the four of you have great misadventures, causing mayhem and getting into trouble. You and Cherry particularly have gotten into more than your fair share of trouble for it with Erik, being warned not to draw attention to yourselves, not to break anything, not to hurt the soul of the theatre or some other bleeding heart nonsense. You both love Erik but really, he's such a grumpy old man sometimes. But he is your boss, after all, so you nod along dutifully and then scamper away giggling. It's alright. You'll just sneak into his office the next time he falls asleep in there and put his hand in a bowl of warm water.
GREGORY RENARD AND SEBASTIAN RENARD
Your two older siblings. You love them with all your heart, you really do, but this new thing Sebastian is doing where he's trying to edge his way into your spotlight isn't sitting well with you at all. Of course, you can't let him know that; he's always a nervous wreck, and that's even more obnoxious than anything else you could possibly think of. Sometimes it does cross your mind that the way you think of him, the way you treat him, is more than a little selfish; he has been raising you for the last five years, after all. He did invest all of his heard-earned money into your career only to watch it crash and burn when your old manager ripped you off. But you really do love him, and Gregory too, in your own way. You just think maybe you only have room for one emotion at a time or something, and lately those emotions have had to be focused around yourself. There isn't really a whole lot of room for anyone else in such a tiny body, so there's certainly no use feeling guilty about it.
MADALENE GIRY
For whatever reason, Madalene blatantly despises you and your siblings and, no matter what Erik says, you're not having any of it, so you're giving that bitter old woman a taste of her own medicine whenever you get the chance. She says something nasty to you, you say something nastier right back. She makes a comment about the way you dress, you knock that stupid cane out from under her and hope she falls on her face. You have no idea why she hates you so much, but she does, and so you hate her back. That's just the way it is, those are the rules.
THIS CHARACTER HAS A FLEXIBLE FACECLAIM AND IS TAKEN BY ADMIN B

Fredericton shootings are fresh trauma for N.B., four years after Moncton attack
FREDERICTON -- Family members of three RCMP officers killed in a 2014 Moncton attack say the Fredericton shooting deaths will bring a fresh wave of trauma to New Brunswick -- and bring painful memories to the surface for many.
The shootings that killed four people on Friday -- including two municipal police officers -- come just four years after Justin Bourque's rampage that killed Constables Doug Larche, Fabrice Gevaudan and Dave Ross.
Daniel Larche, the brother of Doug, said news of the Fredericton deaths are difficult to hear.
"I can empathize with what these people are about to go through and hopefully they'll have the support and some of the tools they need to get through it," the 46-year-old said in a telephone interview.
"It's going to be tough. It's going to be hard for them."
Constables Eric Dubois and Darlene Goguen were also injured when Bourque went hunting police officers in a Moncton neighbourhood on June 4, 2014. Bourque had targeted police in the hopes of sparking an anti-government rebellion.
Angela Gevaudan, the widow of Fabrice Gevaudan, said in a telephone interview that she was feeling a sense of protectiveness on Friday for the families, knowing how they will be overwhelmed by emotions as they receive news of the deaths.
They will need to just receive simple information for a time, as they struggle to process the shock of the deaths of their loved ones, she said.
"It's going to take a lot of time to process, and the images, moments and memories and everything coming in is going to be difficult for everyone involved," she said in an interview.
"It's heartbreaking, and of course I'm thinking of everyone who is impacted by it and I'm just hoping that they'll get the support they need."
Since she lost her husband, Gevaudan has done volunteer work as an ambassador for Tema, a group that provides help and advocates for first responders who are suffering from PTSD.
She has also offered support and shared her experience with others suffering from trauma.
Gevaudan said she didn't really want to speak about her own reactions on Friday, saying she didn't want to make the latest deaths in Fredericton about her own difficult memories.
However, the former 911 operator said it will be important for first responders who are angered or upset by the latest deaths to let their emotions come out, rather than suppress them.
"Let emotions you are feeling be acknowledged and be felt. That itself helps you process the trauma and helps with the healing," she said.
Larche said the difficult memories of his brother's death continue to be powerful four years after the Moncton murders, and to hear that others in uniform have been killed is hard news to receive.
"There's an extra attachment I guess, or connection with first responders, given my own attachment to my brother," he said.
"People who step up try to do their best to protect people. A lot of things this country has is because people were willing to risk their lives for something better."
In addition, he said he believes many people in Moncton who witnessed the shooter moving through the city or who dealt with the injured or wounded police officers are going to struggle with resurfacing memories.
"It's tough for New Brunswick," he said.
"Had it happened in Moncton it would have been an extra trigger for people. There are lots of people who have still not recovered. It's still a traumatic event for people."
Meanwhile, across Canada, policing leaders sent messages of support and condolences on New Brunswick's latest tragedy.
Halifax Regional Police Chief Jean-Michel Blais tweeted his support. He said he had been in contact with the Fredericton force.
"I have spoken to Chief Fitch personally to offer her any support we can give. We stand with @CityFredPolice while they deal with this situation."
Saint John, N.B., police Chief Bruce Connell sent condolences in a news release.
"I want to extend our deepest sympathies to the families, friends and colleagues of the two Fredericton Police Force officers who lost their lives today in a senseless and tragic event," said Connell.
Gevaudan said those messages will be appreciated by the families over time. But for now those who are "darkly impacted" will need time and space, she said.
"One who is learning of this could be devastated for sure. It's violent. ... I think we have a hard time understanding how certain people can choose to do these kinds of things. And I think it adds to our sadness and devastation in this kind of moment."
"It adds to the trauma because it feels likes it's ... not right, and it shouldn't happen."
