𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐞𝐥 𝐓𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐲 (𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟗) @𝐭����𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞⁣ My latest in an ongoing series of painted heroes, aimed to spark conversation among my students. Pictured here is my homage to Michael Twitty. ⁣ ⁣ I have the privilege to have known Michael since grade-school where our class voted him “Most Likely to Succeed” and I predicted that he would write the great American novel. Both divinations have become true. Mr. Twitty is a culinary historian, honored with Colonial Williamsburg’s “Revolutionary in Residence,” and a writer, authoring “The Cooking Gene”, winner of the 2018 James Beard Foundation Book Award. ⁣ ⁣ Pictured here is a triptych that I hope embodies the nature of Michael. The bottom-left scene shows Michael in action as a pioneer, simultaneously gathering knowledge while forging new ground. The bottom-right frame displays Michael in the midst of creation, the glow of his effort shinning bright enough to light his surroundings. The main focus is a portrait of Michael set in an original kitchen amongst his tools, staring directly at the viewer as if we had just asked a question, and he is about to grace us with his wisdom and knowledge. ⁣ ⁣ 12” x 24”. Harris, and Valerie Erwin gave a panel presentation on Southern Foodways hosted by the Free Library of Philadelphia. I missed the panel but loved the afterparty!
