Thoughts : Free Fire (2016)

There’s an old writing adage, known as Chekov’s gun, about removing elements not necessary to your script.  To paraphrase, it says that if a gun is introduced in the first act, it must go off in a subsequent act.  When Ben Wheatley decided to direct Free Fire, a film he co-wrote with Amy Jump, they skipped the economy aspect and took the adage literally.  The result is a wonderfully entertaining dark comedy, and another notch on the ‘elevator pitch film turned reality’ belt.

The cast of this film is stout... nobody truly could afford to be the weak link in an ensemble of this nature.  Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy, Armie Hammer, Sharlto Copley and Sam Riley, in particular, bring their A-games.  The allegiances that the character groups form are shaky at best, and with a massive amount of volatile elements already thrown into the mix, it’s a completely freak meeting which serves as the proverbial straw that breaks the camel’s back.

The premise of the film is simple : a warehouse full of people who don’t trust one another during an arms deal turns into a fire fight of epic proportions.  Wheatley and Jump manage to balance each character, their motivations for targeting others, their ability to deliver and avoid gunfire, and their confidence levels brilliantly throughout the duration of the confrontation.  We are not fed to a John Woo-esque bulletstorm, or a John Wick style bullet ballet.  What we are treated to is a very real depiction of what it would be like to be trapped in a football field sized space with nearly no cover and bullets flying from multiple directions.

In what could be an idea that quickly falls off the rails into the realms of indulgence and over-styling, what we are given is the gunplay equivalent of a Royal Rumble match.  The stakes raise at breakneck speeds to epic proportions, and things go so haywire that it is really and truly hard to pick someone to root for or place a bet on being the last man standing.  When all is said and done, what the viewer is left with is an exciting and hilarious thrill-ride that sticks in the mind for a long time.
