TL;DR – It is a solid action film and one of Jason Statham’s best roles in a while. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 3.5 out of 5. The Beekeeper (15): Ludicrous Statham Action Flick... Which Actually Gave Me a Buzz.
#OneMannsMovies #FIlmReview of "The Beekeeper". #TheBeekeeper. Mindless action nonsense with Jason Statham... but actually quite fun! 3.5/5.
A One Mann’s Movies Film Review of “The Beekeeper” (2023). In terms of ‘leave your brain at the door’ cinema, “The Beekeeper” is high up there on the list. Sometimes this type of film can leave you weeping into your popcorn. Amazingly, this one felt like a fun ride. (But, I mean, it’s still not bloody Shakespeare). hi stupid question idk where to ask. where do you get kandi? i feel weird just buying it on etsy or whatever but is that fine? idk
you make it yourself with beads! or trade for it/trade kandi you made for it! you can also buy it on etsy if youd like - i think some people might say that's not necessarily the "spirit" of PLUR but i also think that kandi making is its own lil artform and supporting other ravers IS in the spirit of PLUR, so i think its ok. honestly anything to keep the spirit alive. you can find supplies for making kandi at like, any Joanne's or Michael's or whatever. or check out beadtin.com!

Today's compilation:
Can't Beat the Music Vol. 2 1992 Pop / Adult Contemporary / Pop-Rock / Techno
This is such an incisive window into just how utterly strange the early 90s were in multiple parts of the world when it came to popular music writ large. Like, this is a very Australian comp here, but it deals with the same exact dynamic that was present throughout the US at the same time too, which was this very apparent, herky-jerky push-and-pull between soft and anodyne adult contemporary traditions of pop and rock, and brasher, newfangled, upstart sounds that were appreciated by and targeted more directly at the youth. Last year, when I wrote about Technotronic's pretty goofy, yet deeply important dance classic, "Pump Up the Jam," which managed to hit #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in January of 1990, I mentioned that the only song that had kept it from the top back then was Michael Bolton's "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You," which meant that all throughout America, nearly thirty-five years ago, people were getting bludgeoned by this literal one-two punch in the dead of winter on their local contemporary hit radio stations—a slow and sappy, mom-aimed pop ballad, followed by the first house tune to ever break big in the country's history. Pretty fucking absurd if you think about it.
And it appears that the *same exact* thing was happening in Australia at the same time too, as the sequencing on this album ends up yielding such strange and sudden vibe-shifts that rock from an entirely instrumental version of 2 Unlimited's silly arena Eurodance-techno-raver, "Get Ready for This," to a special 1992 duetted edition of Tina Turner's "The Best" that features Aussie adult rocker Jimmy Barnes, in order to promote the then-latest season of the New South Wales Rugby League 😵💫.
And there are two other songs that I think are worth highlighting here as well—one that I think is remarkably terrible and cringe and another that I think is pretty neat for what it is if you can appreciate early 90s radio pop.
So today I discovered one of the single-worst songs that I think I may have heard in my entire life: "Kickin' to the Undersound" by the Sound Unlimited Posse, which if you couldn't tell by that awful title, is a hip hop tune by Australia's first ever rap act to get signed to a major label. Feast your eyes and ears upon this early 90s monstrosity that does its very best to outdo all the embarrassment that was brought upon by people and acts like Marky Mark, Vanilla Ice, and C&C Music Factory:
youtube
Good grief; I would gladly take every single weirdly aggro Eurodance rap verse that was about sweat over 96% of whatever this was. The only thing worth saving about this song is its breaks-infused, instrumental bridge. Everything else, including the super tacky and very unsubtle sampling of Aussie new wave heroes' Men At Work's "Down Under" on the chorus, can be hauled off the side of an ocean liner for all I care 🤮.
But OK, let's now wash that down with something far less grating, with a song from Australian pop group Indecent Obsession called "Kiss Me." If you like legendary Swedish synthpop duo Roxette, then I think you'll like this tune too, because this has the same softcore, heavy breath throbbiness of Roxette's sound, a surging and extended contemporaneous radio ad-jingle-type chorus like lots of Roxette singles do, and a bridge that sounds a whole lot like the catchy 'na-na-na' part of Roxette's own "The Look" as well. Cross all that with someone who sounds a little like George Michael and you've got this pretty well-made pop tune that is very much of its early 90s time, with a hollow and compressed sound to it that makes it feel like it was solely made to be played on FM radio back then, which I don't really think is a bad thing!
So sometime in the latter part of the 90s, the adult contemporary wing of the pop music landscape began to get relegated off of contemporary hit radio stations and onto its own specific adult-oriented formats. And in AC's absence then came much more youth-oriented music, but before that gradual and significant shift ended up occurring, the top commercial pop stations appeared to have been suffering through an identity crisis; one that forsook any sense of fluidity in their playlists for trying to simultaneously appeal to both oil-and-water youth and adult demos alike. I'm not sure which thing happened first between AC not selling as much as it once did and then that causing it to get less rotation overall on top-40 radio, or if a decision was made by top-40 radio programmers to cut back on the AC, which then caused AC sales to sag; but what I do know is this: contemporary hit radio and popular music were insane in the early 90s, and it wasn't just in America, as this very strange Aussie comp so clearly proves. Maybe it felt more banal and normal while it was happening, but looking back on it now, the idea of hearing some maximally cheesy, high-powered commercial techno-rave tune lined up back-to-back with, like, a heart-poured Bette Midler ballad, is a very ridiculous and surreal thing to have ever happened, and yet it did, on both radio and comps like this one, without any discernible hint of irony.
Highlights:
2 Unlimited - "Get Ready for This" Tina Turner & Jimmy Barnes - "The Best" Baby Animals - "Ain't Gonna Get" Indecent Obsession - "Kiss Me" The KLF - "What Time Is Love" R. Kelly feat. Public Announcement - "She's Got That Vibe"

Helloooo! 🤗 Just wanted to say that I love your Rockstarion fic so so much! Do you have specific artists in mind that influenced your take on him - and maybe even Estelle as his groupie / girlfriend to be?
Thank you for your work and I hope we'll see more of Rockstarion soon ❤️
Hoooiiiii ヽ<(^Ѡ^)>ノ゙
Thanks so much for your ask!
One particular piece that influenced Rockstarion was this artwork by @snottiesnot:
the 80s vibes are ✨immaculate✨ and I immediately felt the roaring of the stage and the cheering of the fans. (and his happiness just radiates through <3)
When it comes to music, mainly The Ballad Of Buck Ravers by Samurai but also the artist Prince is a big influence. Especially his Purple Rain era fits so so well with him. Michael Jacksons Bad era sneaks in too from time to time :D
I do listen to some modern pieces or 90s rock too when I write, but it has to fit the vibe.
When I write him, I have a mix of musicians in mind and their struggles. And anxiety is a big part. The 80s were full of wild stories, but the 60s and 70s had tragedies too. Losing Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Elvis Presley etc. And I try to capture this fantastic 80s energy, as it was an influential decade. Dirty Dancing might be a little bit of an influence too 🤭
It's so much fun to imagine his character as a rockstar in a modern-ish Faerûn. Astarion in general is just too fun to write.
When I first wrote Estellé I listened to Dirty Diana by Michael Jackson (a song about groupies haha) and that's how she came to life. Then for the long fic I tried to imagine who she is and what struggles she has. And since she's a student, she has a different world view than a seasoned rockstar. She wisened up a little bit working at a hotel, but she's still about a decade younger than him and has different experiences growing up.
Don't worry, we haven't seen the last of him yet 👀 As soon it's not the 9th layer of Avernus I might be able to concentrate better on writing the next chapter :D
Thank you ever so much with keeping up with this fic!

Kandi Summers: Meeting S3RL
I didn’t know it then, but the warehouse was calling me. From the dark halls of Osbourne Industrial Park, it called all who were Ravers. It called us to fill it with light and music and dancing. It called S3RL when he was still making techno tracks on his N64.
And now it was calling me, a loser, into its centre.
Nellie opened her box of colourful beads, all simple, all unapologetically plastic. “Kandi.” she said. Raving attracted a stigma. If you wore Phats you could expect the word “faggot” yelled at you from a moving commodore.
It was in high school when I clicked, by sheer luck, with friends slightly cooler than me and suddenly I was in a world of flouro tickets, Michael’s Blue SS speeding through the night, djing, vinyl and raves. Underground warehouse Raves. Location unannounced, to keep the cops confused. My pupils widened.
We sat in Nelly’s room and watched her dance in her gators while we dipped into a bowl of pony beads to make kandi in preparation for the rave.
Taking the train to get to the rave, we ran into some comrades, some new ravers wearing the phat-pants, kandi and gators for the first time. Comrades. We were all gravitating to the warehouse, every suburb emptying out, every person who knew the secret.
I had listened to Darude to try and picture what my first rave would be like, snapped a glowstick and watched the chemicals mingle to produce light.
Every warehouse was unique. One had its ceiling stuffed full of hundreds of plush toys staring down at you. One was a tiny box stacked on another tiny box, with an impossibly steep staircase. The energy in there was like a nuclear bomb going off in a small space.
While I was in awe of a PHD raver flicking his phats in the lasers, effortlessly flipping and spinning, S3RL was out there somewhere in a warehouse perfecting his dance. Laser lights blossomed behind my eyelids, turning into interlocking leaves, dots from a dot matrix printer.
inevitable really, when you had drugs and young girls showing off skin. We didn’t go to raves to hook up. That would be defiling something pure. We danced because it was fun to improve our technique. We spent hours sewing pink gators and beading and designing our Phat Pants to flicker in the laser light. We hugged our raver sisters and our raver brothers, and wore pacifiers on a string of beads for something to chew on when we had the gurns, but mainly as a fuck-you to gender norms.
When the movement peaked for me in 2009, in Perth, and then started to decline, we were happy, because people were coming for the right reasons again. The ‘superstar dj’ movement peaked but S3RL let the wave pass over him. He was only interested in making music.
The movement split apart. Small groups still danced in their living rooms, and we still thrived on Hardstyle, DnB and Happy Hardcore. Some people swapped their Phats for fisherman pants, their Exstacy for mushrooms and went on to join the Doof movement.
There was a silver lining though; Neko Nation, a ‘legal’ rave which had managed to weave together Happy Hardcore, catgirls, gaming, and kandi-raving. It was an addictive formula. Meanwhile, S3RL was going from strength to strength, touring the globe with his music. Happy hardcore isn’t as ‘serious’ as other dance music genres, it is energetic, cheeky and unselfconscious. It sounded good, and people actually danced to it, which was a rarity as Kandi raving was slowly replaced by Berlin style techno raves. Where other events worldwide were flagging, people were lining up to see S3RL. They wanted to hear Pretty Rave Girl. We didn’t want to stand around a dark warehouse in our Adidas listening to Berlin techno. We wanted flare. We wanted Pika Girl. We wanted every shade of coloured hair haloed in laser light. We wanted MTC. We wanted that cyberpunk soup of light and warmth and colour, the haze I had fallen in love with the first time I had stepped into the laser lights.
Then, two people died at Defqon 1 and the NSW Premier vowed to shut the event down forever. I laughed. We would survive this like we survived everything else. But it became difficult. The council started cracking down on the two companies in Perth that held warehouse parties. It became impossible to secure a warehouse without risking a police raid and huge fines.
It turned out that Phat pants, kandi, and the flicking, jumping and bouncing dance that we pioneered was something endemic to Perth. In a place that has very little to do and so little cultural depth, this was unique, it was something to do, and something to unite us. When it was gone, it left a vacuum.
When Neko Nation was announced for 2018, we jumped for joy, but it was bittersweet. It was going to be the last Neko ever. But S3RL was headlining.
When I filled in the little form on S3RL’s website I didn’t have high hopes. He was completing his last tour before his retirement, headlining at all the Neko Nations around Australia as he worked his way around to Perth.
“We have to see this,” I persuaded my friends. “It’s the end of an era.”
I had my Rick Sanchez shirt ready in advance, and my kandi, and Phat Pants. Was there anyone in Perth who still had the balls to wear their Phats? I hoped so. I needed to believe.
Three hours before the event S3RL messages me to meet at his hotel. Yes. Adrenaline rush. I race to the bottleshop to buy two beers and three Jack Daniels tall-ies. I race down in my Prado to the heart of the city, drive over the curb and squeeze into a city parking bay. S3RL greets me with a handshake. He has his signature piercings and seems relaxed, at ease. We go up to his hotel room. We have a beer together. We laugh, talk about the culture, discuss what the rave scene was in the past and what it was now. He was humble, and genuine. He spoke about his evolution in music, about evolving in his technique while trying to stay true to his original sound. We talked about his marriage. “Guess you found your ‘pretty rave girl’ after all,” I joked. The lift was coming up, S3RL’s set was happening soon.
“Should I play my Drug songs?” He winks at me. We go our separate ways.
I line up with my friends at the dancehall in the middle of the city after parking in the iconic car park where ravers had parked their STI’s for years, where we had drank and freestyled on break through all the other Neko Nations.
We get our stamps and pass under the UV lights.
Out of the woodwork crawl all these people, ravers, catgirls, gamers, furries, people we thought had disappeared, all lining up for S3RL, all lining up to see the DJ press play.
S3RL rocks the beat with both hands on the faders. The hardcore builds up to a crescendo as the lasers pierce us and the strobes explode in our faces.
The music builds up to an expectant pause. Silence. We close our eyes. Behind shut eyelids the imprint of the lasers blossoms, and we wait for what feels like an eternity.
Then S3RL flicks over the bass and the dancefloor erupts into a frenzy of motion. I’m taken back to where it all started, Michael djing and the flicker of light on a vinyl record.
When it was all over, S3RL waited to take a photo with every last fan. He even complied with the more outlandish requests, like putting on a Goku shirt and casting a fireball.
I was so excited, yet out of it, and asked to go back with S3RL to his apartment to get some last scoops for the book. S3RL was patient with me in my inebriated state, and let me come with him. I congratulated him on his set and he gave me a USB stick with all his tracks.
er biscuits. Ricy subaru’s. Dancing, practicing your dance moves everywhere, having “faggot” shouted at you from a moving car, gators, medic, pikachu, handing out lolipops, anime, pacifiers, zelda tattoos, Mario drug crossovers, cosplay, gas-masks.
S3RL said raving never really peaked and waned, that it went through highs and lows throughout its history.
Neko Nation and S3RL went off into the cold night with a bang. If the cycle ever does go round and Kandi Raving takes hold again, S3RL will be there.
And we’ll be there.
