A Queer History of the United States by Michael Bronnski:

I'm…conflicted on my feelings about this book.

On one hand, it had some excellent stuff in it; some that I had heard before and some that I hadn't. It was excellent on context about purity politics in the US, their active and ongoing impact on US culture, and how the gay rights movement interacted with that; that was very clearly the main thrust of the narrative the writer wanted to tell.

On the other hand, for something calling itself a *queer* history, it was almost entirely focused on gay and lesbian culture and politics, and how this affected "mainstream" culture.

Not only did it have minimal focus on actual *people*and their lives, particularly working class ones who did not have the money and status to affect the larger culture, but trans, gnc and intersex people were basically erased from the narrative, plus, frankly, the author calling everyone queer “homosexuals" even while talking about the complex and difficult history of medicalisation, and dismissing even openly bi celebrities such as David Bowie as "claiming they slept with both men and women" was a bizarre and concerning choice.

Primarily a missed opportunity here, I feel. While noting how gay culture affected menswear trends in the mid-twentieth century is interesting, it doesn’t replace a huge swath of missing information about trans, gnc and intersex folk, and, honestly, the fact that Marsha P Johnson and Sylvia Riviera were mentioned *once* and Marsha’s transness was not mentioned at *all* while there was swathes of information on the cis respectability politics clubs of the period cannot but feel like erasure.

In this view, the founding of modern society was predicated on the creation of minority groups whose only purpose was to be vilified as unclean and persecuted for the illusion of a comprehensive sense of societal safety.

This idea, based on anthropologist Mary Douglas's widely accepted theory of purity and danger, is helpful in explaining broad trends in European and American culture. The idea of purifying religious and secular thought and society was at the heart of Puritan identity. These ideas were continuous with the long European tradition of a persecuting society and emerged at a time of grave political and religious disruption that neatly dovetailed with the impulse to stabilize society through persecution."

in this leap, sounds like the author could have been more accurate to call him a man whom other men loved, hahaha. I am so far liking this book (A Queer History of the United States by Michael Bronski) but it was a gift so I haven't read any reviews of its technicality when it comes to presenting history. Narratively, I feel his presentation makes a lot of sense and contextualizes queer history in the U.S., whereas many historians on the subject have a goal of proving the existence of queer people prior to the 20th century (which I hope academics are past... but anyway).

The misunderstanding is on me for not digging through the sources before shitposting about André's sexuality (or mannerisms) because I do think I took out of context what Bronski was saying in this chapter. Bronski was explaining the emergence of the first true American literature post-revolution, of course with examples of stories like Washington Irving's "Sleepy Hollow." In this literature was the culture of a New American Man, defined by his gender and machoism in ways men of England were not. Nobody put it better than Bronski himself, I found as I tried to summarize, so here's the whole excerpt:

Paradoxically, as westward expansion made the country geographically larger, new technologies— the invention of the telegraph in the late 1830s, the growth of a national railway system, and the telephone in the 187o-facilitated travel and communications, making the country smaller and more cohesive. In these conditions we see the eventual flourishing of a distinctly American intellectual and literary culture. Washington Irving's 1820 short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" promotes the ideal of robust, decidedly heterosexual masculinity, as embodied by "Brom Bones" Van Brunt, over that of the lanky, effeminized schoolteacher Ichabod Crane.

Both men are courting young Katrina Van Tassel until Brom Bones frightens Crane out of town. Irving's gender and sexual message is clear. Crane's first name means "inglorious" in Hebrew, which Bible-literate contemporary readers would know. And as literary critic Caleb Crain points out, much of the action of the story takes place by "Major André's tree." This is a reference to Major John André, the British officer-generally thought to be a lover of men- who collaborated with Benedict Arnold and was hanged by George Washington as a spy in 1780. For Irving, nearly four decades after the Revolution, the new, clearly heterosexual American man was an imperative.

Because he explained earlier in the chapter (and goes on to continue this explanation in the next) the interchangeability of queerness and overall being different from society very well might have led people to believe André, as a polite and cultured British officer who liked the fine arts and had a lot of admirers even in the enemy, was "queer" in this sense though that doesn't mean he necessarily was attracted to or had relationships with other men. So I agree, the implication Bronski leaves here is misleading and most importantly, not true to the source from which it is derived. maybe bro wrote down some notes that mistranslated poorly. (but no excuses!! be thorough when publishing academically, obviously!)

Otherwise, I'm about halfway through and really enjoying the read. I recommend it if you haven't read it and I'm sure there will be plenty more paper-trails to follow into detail and potentially pick apart.

I feel like a lot of internet folk would have a stroke if they saw colleges with queer studies courses and professors. Because that’s the accepted academic term. But those people also don’t trust academia even when it’s full of queer people, so they probably don’t know nor care that colleges even have those programs.

Coming from someone who was VERY LUCKY to have cable/satellite TV while growing up in my native United States, I watched a documentary on countertenors. (It was originally a South Bank Show episode, but with the part when Melvyn Bragg introduced it cut off. It featured on Ovation TV.)

As a 5th grader - BELIEVE IT OR NOT - I was starting to become an early music fangirl at the time. (Blame Messrs. Koopman and Goodall, as well as Classic Arts Showcase - they exposed me to the historic forms of orchestral instruments, harpsichords, and early pianos!)

When I watched the documentary, I started fangirling countertenors - DOUBTLESSLY. And a snippet of this above music video was featured in it!

And that was in 2001, WELL BEFORE kids asked their parents to ham it up for TikTok by grooving to that 1984 hit by Bronski Beat (led by one of the guests of the documentary, Jimmy Somerville). So, Ovation TV got me to “Smalltown Boy” WELL OVER TWO DECADES before the social media platform did!

The docu on Ovation TV wasn’t my first time seeing AND hearing countertenors on screen. A VHS of a 1991 production of Christoph W. Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice (featuring Jochen Kowalski, who wasn’t one of the featured performers in it) I rented from the library was my first time hearing and seeing one.

Oooooh thats a great question that I’m veeery happy to answer to !!! I actually have three playlist on Spotify specifically on this (Byler, Mike and Will)

So bear with me I will try to make it short x’D

Byler

For them the first that come to mind is Heroes by David Bowie no one can convince me that’s it’s not their canon song in the serie, the lyrics are just perfect and I could bet money that they will kiss in season 5 with this music in background “And we kissed as though nothing could fall” it’s just way too perfect. Secondly I associate them a lot with Seven by Taylor Swift, the lyrics are just so perfectly them !! Or even Spark Fly, a lot of Taylor’s song are very byler coded to me- Like I said I have a whole playlist with songs like Daylight by Taylor Swift, Me and Michael by MGMT, The light that never goes out by The Smiths and such, for a long time I could listen to nearly anything and still link it with them x’D

For him I actually have a few song that I can’t listen to without thinking about him; Tarzan boy by Baltimore and Smalltown Boy by Bronski Beat The first being in the serie and the second on Mike’s official playlist, they’re literally about gay boys trying to live in the 80’s, wishing for liberty and escaping their city to live freely (and find love) These songs are Mike‘s, i do also think about him when listening to songs like Dollhouse by Melanie Martinez, the lyrics really describe the wheeler family, but there’s so much more songs that I can’t add because it would be too much x’D There’s so many song like Michael in the bathroom that I associate with him because if edits

Again for him there’s so many song that I can’t listen to without thinking about him, firstly and obviously Should I stay or should I go by The Clash and Boy’s don’t cry by The cure as the first one is canonically his song and the second very much hinted to be important 👀 so honestly no need to explain those very much except the fact that the lyrics speak by themselves. Secondly I do think A LOT about him listening to nearly every Conan Gray song there’s an invisible link between them I can’t shake off, Heather, Family line, Summer child ??? So Will coded !! And songs like Iris by the goo goo dolls or Elastic heart by Sia ?? ALL TOO WELL BY TS ?! Forever linked to will in my head because if edits and fanfictions 😭

I swear there’s so many songs that remind me of him, of Mike or of both of them I can’t even start to list it, those two gays really rot my brain for so long that every song was a byler song if I tried hard enough (most of the time I didn’t even try I just listened and “oh very ____ coded” and that for monthhhs, now it’s not the same anymore as I have more diverse interest and I think of diverse characters listening to music but I swear there’s so many song that could have been written for them 😭🫶
