having a ton of different productions of newsies is cool and all, like it’s awesome that it’s been adapted into so many successful shows with such amazing cast members, but .. but the issue comes with fanfiction.

i am reading a javid fic and it’s nice but then suddenly my brain decides that corey cott is cuddling with ryan kopel?? the next scene comes, i’m like ok let’s stick to one version of newsies— ah shit it’s michael ahomka-lindsay and ben fankhauser.

jack kelly as a young black man, a black kid, has forever changed how i see his character and i will never imagine him any other way. michael ahomka-lindsay and the newsies uk casting directors deserve so much praise for it. it adds so much to his story, his relationship with katherine especially—his line, “i know girls like you don’t end up with guys like me” is so much more poignant. pulitzer’s disrespect in calling him “boy and “kid” becomes so much more sinister. the abuse his father faced from his employers suddenly carries even more weight. like are you kidding me. how the hell did nobody think of this before!!!!

i think we as a newsies community need to respect vocal choices that aren’t just vocally dangerous opt ups

“i can’t spend my whole life dreaming” being spoken and then “though i know that’s all i seem inclined to do” being sung bc one is reality (spoken) and one is this desire/feeling jack still stands by (sung). do u understand like. what we can have goin on. when it comes to like storytelling>MT sillies

I’m watching uksies rn, just paused at the end of Santa Fe to write this post.

My brother and me are biracial, my brother much more obviously so than myself. He’s generally viewed as Black (I’m generally viewed as what the heck).

my brother came into the room (he had heard the newsies music, he knew I was watching newsies) and he went “who’s that?” And I said, “that’s Jack.”

So he just looks for a second and then goes, “I didn’t know he could be Black.” I nodded and was like Yk yeah isn’t it awesome and he said (this is the part that gets me) “it’s almost kinda weird because I’m so used to seeing White people in shows that I forget that Black people can be in them.”

Representation is so important, you don’t even realize. Me and my brother, ESPECIALLY my awesome adorable little brother, have faced a good deal of racism. And it’s so magical to see someone like you, even if not exactly, onstage and onscreen. To know that no matter what people say to you you can still make it. You can still do great things. People like you exist and always have.
