Tomura and memories and ghosts.

Tomura who lived through the most horrifying thing possible and barely remembers it. Tomura who doesn’t remember his family but still grew up with their dead hands attached to him. Tomura who had a dog and a sister and sometimes gets sad for no reason when he’s alone. Tomura who sees Toga for the first time, a young girl with pigtails full of energy, and immediately likes her without understanding why. Tomura who sometimes falls asleep while holding a pillow roughly the size of an adult corgi and immediately feels better without knowing why.

Tomura existing surrounded by missing things. Tomura constantly feeling absence and holes around him. Tomura trying to live without realizing that the his past literally clings to his body.

The Chosen and the Child

Summary: Tomura's battle has been won, but at a hefty cost. A promise from a hero secured, Tomura gets a visit from a friend he hasn't seen in a long time.

Excerpt:

“My playthrough might be over, but I still have time to choose. I don’t have to let this be the bad ending.”

One step. Two steps. Three steps. God, when had walking gotten so hard? Tomura tried to activate Wings—if he couldn’t walk he would damn well fly there— but the wings just crumbled. The red rope still around his waist frayed a bit and he rolled his eyes. Figures. Old fashioned way then.

An eternity later, he’d made it to Deku’s side. Tomura would prefer to say he knelt down, but it was more like his legs crumpled beneath him and he ended up on his knees. 

“Hey. Hey, Deku.” Green eyes opened, dull like pond scum. “You listening?” A tiny nod. “Good. Cause you gotta do something for me.” Tomura put his hands on Midoriya’s chest as if he were about to start CPR compressions. Gently, so gently, he passed Hyper-Regeneration to the younger boy. He’d have to be careful. Midoriya’s body hadn’t been modified like his. The quirk would eat through him as it tried to repair him if Tomura left it too long. “I can’t be there for them anymore, so you have to do it for me.” 

Midoriya’s gasped, eyes flying open wide as the quirk started to work on him, and Tomura caught his chin, forcing him to meet his eyes. “They need a hero. All the lost ones. The abandoned ones. All the ones who fell between the cracks. The k-kids—” Tomura coughed and felt blood dripping from his lips and down his chin. Ew. “—The kids on the playground that no one else will play with. You have to find them for me, okay?” Midoriya’s face blurred as the tears Tomura had been fighting back spilled over. Or maybe he was losing consciousness? Wasn’t important. Focus on what was. “M-My friends. Please… Please take care of my friends. I… I can’t. Please, Izuku… take care… take care of them.”

He pulled Hyper-Regeneration back, and was pleased to see the color that had returned to Midoriya’s cheeks was staying in place. His green eyes were bright again, bright as sunlight through pine branches. He’d be okay. 

“I promise I’ll take care of them, Tomura,” he said in his squeaky, earnest little voice. Knowing everything this crazy kid had done to reach him, Tomura knew he could trust the brat. “I’ll be there for them.”

Tomura Shigaraki smiled down at Midoriya Izuku and said, without a trace of irony and with all the gratitude he could muster, “My hero.”

Deku was spared from having to answer by the sound of frantic barking. Both he and Tomura looked across the battlefield and saw a brown and white dog charging toward them, barking its head off and running as fast as its short little legs could go. It got a bit closer and recognition punched Tomura right in the gut. Recognition followed by incredulous joy.

“Mon!” he screamed. “Mon! Mon-chan! Mon! Mon!” Without a second thought, he jumped to his feet and raced to meet his dog. Behind him came a soft, relieved sigh that sounded like his own voice, but Tomura couldn’t have cared less about what was behind him. He was five again and Mon-chan was in front of him. 

He stopped suddenly, remembering the last time he’d held his dog, but Mon-chan had no such compunctions. As soon as she was close enough, she leapt into his arms, bowling him completely off his feet with her ecstatic greeting. Tomura fell back onto something soft that smelled like sun warmed grass and flowers, but only for a moment before everything smelled like puppy breath because Mon was licking his face, whimpering and whining, her whole body vibrating with eagerness to show him just how much she loved him.
