Basics

Students are separated randomly into specific departments and classes sectioned by the letters A-K.

These departments are:

Department of Heroics (A - B): Students in this department learn everything they need to know in order to become excellent heroes in service to the community. They are trained in battle, first aid, rescue, support, and all manners of heroic-related lessons.

Department of General Education C - E): Students who don’t make it to the hero course are included here. This department supports students aiming for college and other pursuits. It’s also possible for students with good grades and exceptional strength and quirk skills to be transferred into the hero course (And either the support or business course mind you). Basically regular HS but they get to say that they went to UA on their resume.

Department of Support (F - H): Students here focus on developing support equipment that helps heroes out on the battlefield. With a workspace stock to the brim with all sorts of special tools and their own studio to build things, this department provides an unmatched creative environment.

Department of General Management (I - K): This department focuses on all aspects of heroic business, from the founding and managing of hero agencies to the promotion of public opinion regarding heroes. They even do hands-on lessons in venture capitalism. They have a lot of free time.

Each class is usually comprised of 21 students. That means that the total student population at UA would be 693.

We stay in the same class with the same teacher for all 3 years.

Since UA is a highly prestigious school, we get a lot of funding and benefits for the dorms and when we go on trips and whatnot. (Food we buy for the dorms is paid for, we get free snacks/concessions in the sports festival, free hero costume updates and renewals)

The school curriculum is way less loaded than here. The school system is much better.

The Hero Teachers are actually good at teaching.

Since U.A. is famous, it has many sponsors with support and hero merch companies, so some hero course students (usually 3rd years) have their own hero merch already. Students are sometimes sponsored and do photoshoots and are invited to red carpet events. (Following the School Festival, Class 1-A gets loads of sponsors and stuff!)

The teachers and students are encouraged to decorate their classes and most of them do so.

U.A. has a popular school website.

Staff and students are recommended to have Twitter to update the public events, the majority of the students obviously don't take this seriously, there's always someone who has beef and makes it public (Monoma) and it always ends up like those MHA Tweets, it’s the funniest thing ever.

Schedule

School is Monday - Friday and starts at 8:25 and finishes at 15:10. Regular classes take place during the first half of school, then the afternoon (for the Dept. of Heroics) you will have hero training. Only Dept. of Heroics students have an additional 7th period.

The teachers move between classes while the students stay in 1 class (besides electives).

Wednesdays are half days and only consist of hero training (so no typical school work), though sometimes it's replaced by FHS. You also don't have to wear your uniform on Wednesdays.

We will always have some kind of free time for school despite our somewhat busy schedules.

Not all school days are the same (emergency drills, other schools coming to train with us, etc.).

Core Subjects for Dept. of Heroics

Homeroom: Taught by Aizawa. Acts as a study hall. The class reps will often give a small meeting with the class about important events during this period.

Japanese: Taught by Cementoss. Focuses on reading, writing, and literature.

Mathematics: Taught by Ectoplasm. Covers algebra, geometry, and calculus.

English: Taught by Present Mic. Emphasizes reading, writing, and conversation skills.

Home Economics: Taught by Midnight. Cooking and other aspects of household management.

Foundational Hero Studies (FHS): Taught by All Might, Aizawa or Midnight. Hero related studying: hero laws, safety precautions, first aid, jsl, media training, dividing hero and civilian identity etc.

Hero Training: Taught by various teachers, usually Aizawa or All Might, it changes every week and we are informed about the activities during homeroom. For example: Quirkless Combat, Rescue Training, Combat, Quirk Training etc.

Elective Subjects

Thought by various teachers. This is the only class where students move instead of teachers, these are shared, so you could end up with classmates from other classes. Students get to completely choose what electives they have. If they don’t choose, they are placed in extra training or study hall.

Class 1-A Timetable

Around UA campus

The updated UA security system is really good. The sensors are so good, you don't even need to have your ID out. They can scan it anywhere on your person. If you lost or misplaced your ID, the gates also have facial recognition software, so it's fine. If you're not a student or staff, you NEED a visitor pass or the school will go into lockdown on you.

We can use our school IDs to get snacks and drinks from vending machines around the school hallways. It’s free and they are replenished daily.

UA has a courtyard where we can eat outside. Most of the 2nd and 3rd years get food from places outside of the school campus and eat outside in the courtyard. Because of this, the cafeteria isn't as crowded and when we eat lunch we can sit and enjoy our food comfortably. The cafeteria is also luxurious and looks like a fancy mall café.

The library is huge and has many resources with much to explore. There are many different levels with varying types of quiet floors and study halls. It's also open 24/7 so students who are fighting to finish a project can pull all-nighters.

There’s a little shop that has U.A. and hero merch and school supplies including books for courses. You can also buy the merch on the online website.

UA has extracurricular groups and clubs for those who aren't in the hero course such as other sports and things like cheerleaders, debate, theater, music, cooking, ballet, and much more. I mean, hero course students CAN do those things but they WILL have a hard time doing so all while dealing with said hero responsibilities. As mentioned before, business course students have a lot of free time and general ED students are basically regular HS students who just so happen to be going to UA and for support course students, it really depends on how much work you choose to take on for yourself.

There is a study center where students who need extra help can go. Students with failing grades must go here for a set amount of hours to get the help they need. It’s strictly work, and talking about anything other than school is basically prohibited. It’s usually run by Ectoplasm and his clones or Hound Dog.

Work studies & Internships

All first years do an internship, it’s required. This is usually after the sports festival when students have had a chance to show off their skills.

Work studies are basically experience-oriented off-study programs that allow students in the hero course who have Provisional Licenses to work with pros at their agencies. Students will be able to use their quirks under the guidance of a pro, and can even be dispatched to fight villains and help out in disaster areas. If you do well, you can be scouted to become the hero’s sidekick.

Work studies are a more serious version of internships. They entail helping pro heroes on the streets and with investigations. They are usually reserved for 2nd and 3rd-year students, who usually have their licenses. 1st years didn't do them in the past. However, with the rise of villain activity, the school decided to open up work studies to 1st years as well, albeit a very small and select few of them. If they didn't find a good agency with a proven track record they wouldn't do it at all.

If you’re standing at the front of the classroom looking out at the desks, the seating arrangement starts at the leftmost side of the room (“A” names), going front to back and then going to the next row to the right, and so on.  keep in mind that the alphabetical order here is based on the Japanese alphabet. My number is 10.

Since we stay in the same classrooms for most of the days we can leave out stuff at our desks. They have shelves underneath with 2 outlets and lots of space.

Everyone is actually really close, but those are what groups spend the most time together. Of course we hang out in different groups or all together too.

We have frequent movie and game nights, 1-A has a group chat and it’s always active, there’s always someone wanting to do something. Sometimes we invite people from other classes.

Another day, another discourse comparing and contrasting Shoya and Shoko’s relationship in A Silent Voice with Katsuki and Izuku’s relationship in My Hero Academia.

At the end of the day, you’ll never get a 1:1 comparison with these two cases due to the fact that 1) They belong to vastly different genres, 2) One is far longer than the other and 3) One is a grounded character drama and coming of age tale.

But…

I think that A Silent Voice provides a fairly good basis for judging the way MHA handles the relationship development of two characters, where one used to bully the other and an arc of atonement occurs. More importantly, comparisons to A Silent Voice highlight the shortcomings of Katsuki and Izuku’s relationship development and allows me to understand and actually communicate what I don’t like about the way the story handles it.

In my opinion, what sets these two stories apart in the way they handle the atonement arcs of their respective bullies is the way they portray consequences. The big “C” word tends to elicit a hostile reaction from certain fans, who assume that your idea of consequences must necessarily involve the bully character being gratuitously punished and made to suffer as retribution for their past actions. But a consequence is just the “result or affect of an action or condition” and can range in severity, it can have many different effects.

A Silent Voice uses social consequences to prompt change from its main character. Shoya’s bullying results in him being shunned by his classmates and friends, and the story goes to great lengths to show how his actions not only hurt his victim, but that they also hurt people he cared about. His mom has to reimburse Shoko’s mom for the damaged hearing aids (when she is already short on money) for example. Furthermore, the knowledge of his past is something that impacts the way others perceive him, and that change in perception is essential to his arc.

More importantly, A Silent Voice makes it clear to the viewer/reader that despite Shoko generally being a kind and forgiving person, the bullying still hurt her deeply enough to leave a long lasting impression. Shoko is receptive to Shoya’s will to change, but the story doesn’t ignore that Shoko suffered greatly and that the bullying made her sad, frustrated and even angry. Her negative emotions are not overshadowed by her desire to see Shoya become a better person.

The thing that holds me back from enjoying Katsuki and Izuku’s relationship development is the lack of consequences Bakugou receives for his bullying (which is directly connected to the way the narrative denies Izuku both agency and introspection) The hard truth is that Bakugou faces little to no consequences for his past behaviour, and one would think that such a topic would have to be brought up at some point because, ya know…he goes to a hero school. A HERO school, a place where people train to be role models, help people on a large scale and protect those who cannot protect themselves.

The first scene we see with Bakugou depicts him as the opposite of a hero. A mean bully who beats up people weaker than him, and this is emphasized by the fact that he targets Izuku, who has no means of defending himself. Despite this, he gets into UA, which isn’t necessarily a problem because it communicates a major flaw in the system that cultivates heroes (Overlooking certain problematic traits in favour of innate talent and strength) BUT, the information that he used to be a bully never comes up among his classmates in any major or lasting way. We saw his classmates, and even his new friends discuss or think about how much they abhor bullying. The students of class 1A do not like it when people abuse their strength to pick on those weaker than them…yet that never seems to connect back to Bakugou’s past as a bully.

This issue is exacerbated by the lack of attention given to Izuku’s side of the story. In stories that involve the atonement or redemption of a bully, it is CRITICAL that the victim’s side of the story is treated as something equally important to the bully’s side. It’s not something that can just be overshadowed by the bully’s side, it must be focused on in order for the atonement arc to work.

It’s disappointing that Izuku lacks the introspection that Katsuki gets, and very unsatisfying that it effectively lets Katsuki off the hook for literally every bad thing he’s ever done. The ways the bullying might’ve impacted Izuku for the worst is hardly ever discussed because every time the narrative approaches the topic, it always pivots to Izuku praising Katsuki for the things he did right. This is a big problem, because it silences any discussion that focuses on Izuku’s feelings and shines the spotlight on Katsuki instead.

Before I end my little tangent, I also feel the need to say this: Pointing to any instance of Katsuki’s suffering throughout the series IS NOT EVIDENCE OF CONSEQUENCES! Any bad thing will happen to Katsuki and people will proceed to say: “SEE?! Did you see that?? Katsuki HAS faced consequences! How can you say that he never faced consequences for his actions? Why do you want him to suffer?” It’s so disingenuous and it’s a terrible argument that refuses to criticize the text.

As much tokoyami wanted him to do it but he didn't want him to be responsible for him he's focusing on you being safe and sound "LADIES PROTECT Y/N's HONOUR"

"OH IT ON" Mina yelled determined to beat Minets down for your honor, Ochako and Mina nodded to themselves, and while Mina Jumped in the air she slapped ochakos hand to make her float to the top of the wall to drop kick Mineta You stared at the chaos that was in front of you the yelling the screaming honestly it was pretty hilarious to you and you wanted to join in beating Mineta's ass cause why not you wrested out the grip of momo and Jirou and use your telekenies to make yourself float, tsuyu to tried to grab you by using her tongue but you dodge you went and grabbed mina's hand floating her up with you when Mineta made it to the top you both dropped kick him so hard he lost his balance and fell right on top of iida

Safe to say you were praised for your dangerous but badass stunt the girls were all over how amazing that love was and Mina even suggested you be her training partner even iida praised you but still lectured how unsafe that stunt was for the boys (including Bakugo) was shouting how compliments of how badass or manly it was even Aizawa heard about it and praise you for it and also gave mineta 48-hour detection and gave you extra credit all the teachers heard and gave u praises as well and hawks gave you a high five for it they're never living this memory down

Also, the class planned to pay Mineta a visit when they got back to the UA dorms

If MHA ever got any kind of sequel this is how I would want it to be…

It would follow an MC with a C-D Tier quirk that is goofy & borderline useless.

Instead of being a Student at any Hero School, they would be a Sidekick at a Low Ranked Hero Agency.

They wouldn’t awaken any special power or receive an extra quirk.

They would learn to rely on Technique & Gadgets to get by.

Due to them not getting to do anything as a sidekick, they moonlight as a vigilante.

The Antagonists would be a corrupt Hero Agency that’s secretly causing chaos so they can take credit for the saves.

I think that Dai kid from the Final Chapter would be a good fit as the MC. An aspiring sidekick trying his best to be a hero in a world that needs Heroes less and less.

The only cameos from OG MHA would be from the side characters like Class B, Shiketsu and so on.

Class 1-A and other notable Pros from MHA would only show up in random ads or would be mentioned in the background or show up in someone's Origin Flashback.

Since it'll follow a low-ranked Hero Agency they would be doing a lot more mundane tasks.

Due to their duties being more mundane, I feel like this series would have more comedic elements.

A look back at the family in ashes.

MHA has the distinct issue with the fact it's one guy writing it with a few editors chipping in, I think a lot of Manga and Anime could avoid some of their issues with just not expanding and using concepts.

Like there is so much in MHA that could have more done with it, there are more characters then there is time, there are 20 Students in the class, but I don't think we even know the reason they wanted to become heroes, what are the motivations for half of them?

Heroism has become this sort of sport in a way, competitive and there are so many of them, they have a ranking system, from memory, No Other Series Has a Ranking System For Heroes, because they don't need them, all other series have your Listers, A, B, C, D, there is no numerical title, and what the fuck does it mean to be No.1.

See that's what I want to see, why the fuck does being No.1 matter? And who better to ask that question in verse by Shoto, a victim of this sport, him and his brothers breed like Pokémon for their fathers selfish ambition to a title that in the long terms is really meaningless, a target really, what is being No.1 if anything but a status symbol, a don't fuck with me sign, the get out of jail free card. Like seriously did anyone ever explain what the fuck being number one even meant?

Why the fuck do Katsuki and Izuku even want that title, they just want it to be the best?

What I would have loved to see but I am so disappointed that we didn't get was MHA's version of Young Justice's Disordered, a final reflection and dissection's of the characters, the Todoroki's are their worlds version of the Wayne family.

Show me why Shoto is the better version of Endeavour, not just in power but who he is as a person, someone better, he wouldn't want anyone to endeavor what he and his family went through, he is MHA's Dick Grayson so desperate to become nothing like his father, taking the best parts of him making himself better, stable not one to create his own legacy through a child. He doesn't want another him, another Natsou, Fuyumi or Touya, he doesn't want another Endeavour as that name isn't a symbol of Enji's desire to become No.1 to Endeavor through everything that life throws, but no.

Endeavor isn't his title, it is badge of shame, it's not his. Endeavor is the title of the family, to hold out against him, Rei was endeavoring so much pain from seeing her family burn around her, eldest burning.

Fuyumi was holding out for the hope of a normal life, one she could enjoy and share with her family.

Natsou was holding out for the day he could leave to become his own person as far away from his family as he could.

Shoto Endeavored to even become himself he lost his childhood, but you can't lose something you never had.

And Touya, that poor boy so wide eyed and simply wanting his fathers love, his father to save him, but he burned his father frozen watching him, only to be saved by a demon who walked out of the flame.

This is MHA's Batfamily, and Touya has so much in common with Jason it hurts, they both just wanted their Father to save them, but they burned, Bruce tried to save Jason but he couldn't Enji froze, the two were brought back by demons, and had no qualms about murder, to kill to get that attention after they lost a portion of their lives.

But they never explore that, Horikoshi has had several chances to ask, how does it feel to die and be revived, to lose that time, but he never has.

If he had a few other writers to conifer with, you'd get something truly interesting, MHA needed more time in the oven, it has the hallmarks of a truly interesting story, but really didn't get the time to develop, so much was left unanswered, unwritten and unresolved, the status at the end of the series is the same, yeah it gets slightly better, but does it.

We still have people wanting to become heroes, we still have the rankings we still have people gunning for first, and what's that going to do?

Create another Todoroki family, and with Quirk Singularity that oversight of Hubris is going to start festering again, it may not be from the demon in the shadows, but rather the man in the mirror repeating the same mistakes that one man driven by the selfish desire for first made.

And this time they won't be facing Touya with an equal, but they might be facing Magneto with no answer.

So… how would YOU rewrite MHA?

Well, a lot of the things @doodlegirl1998 said are true and are what I would do if I did rewrite MHA, but as @anastasian-dreamer says I do think that the death of Midnight and Eri's stuff are good for the story. Midnight dying alone and off screen is a moment that can really emphasis with the audience that death is a common thing in this world for heroes, and while she gets remembered it becomes just another headline affect a week.

Of what I would change though is:

1) I would want Bakugou to be removed from heroics after the final exam. I would have a build-up that really emphasizes both 'big fish from the small pond moving to the ocean' and the emphasis on flashy quirks alongside discrimination. By this I mean I'd dig out my fav headcanon: Aizawa thinks Bakugou was a bully victim from his peers and his attitude is a reflection of it. Bakugou still gets a strike his first day for nearlya attacking Izuku but it's somewhat brushed off because at the time I think Aizawa has read a basic file on his students but doesn't know everything.

Which is actually something I would have be the norm rather then just Aizawa. The hero teachers all have a test the first day to actually get a feel for their students and to judge them if they're good for heroics. There's another tract at UA called 'Secondary Heroics' where students are put if A) they missed the cut off for heroics, B) they failed the entrance exam BUT have a useful Quirk or C) they were part of the heroics program and removed due to a lack of ability, reliance on their Quirk or a general attitude. Something like my Red Flag program. Aizawa doesn't expel the kids, he sends them to secondary heroics in order to shape up. However often times the kids don't make it out of secondary heroics because they end up washing out. It's never held against them because being a hero is HARD. You can move back to the heroics program if you prove yourself or if you place high in the sports festival compared to a hero student.

Izuku and Bakugou stay in regular heroics because Aizawa in this AU does think both deserve the regular hero course. He sees how Izuku figures it out and goes: Oh, bad teaching and again he thinks Bakugou probably just needs to learn he doesn't need to protect himself. Still, he gets a strike as a warning and because they can't have students hurting each other.

After this, Aizawa gets the full files and learns Izuku is a late bloomer. He still thinks Bakugou is a victim because it's full of teacher praises, so he goes: ah, his peers thought him villainous though. We get todl this, we get shown this. And then it slowly is torn apart for Aizawa as he sees signs that point towards bullying. As Bakugou shows it's all about him facing actual consequences he's upset about, not that his peers don't like him. Then, I would have the final exam. I think in this one, they would know better then to put him and Izuku together, so instead I'd switch Izuku and Todoroki. Bakugou fails his final exam after getting mad Todoroki wouldn't listen, assaulting him ala how he punched Izuku. Bakugou is removed from the program as this is his third strike AND he failed his exam. Meanwhile, the other students who failed got a note that they will take the exam again before the next semester after summer school. If they fail, they get moved to secondary heroics.

How is this discrimination showing? Mostly it's because of Aizawa's assumption and we would see evidence that this happens frequently.

2) As an addition to the above, I would have the class reject Bakugou after some time due to his attitude. I would have a few hold outs who assume the same as Aizawa but they would eventually reject him to. They would band around Izuku, and frankly lay out how awful Bakugou is and Izuku shouldn't keep trying to be his friend. So Izuku gets dragged away from Bakugou and slowly begins seeing what was wrong with how he was treated by society, with flashbacks. Which then leads me to Inko.

3) Give Inko her own character. She's just a plot device in canon, and I would love to explore her as a character to give us more. Right now, as a lot of people agree, she reads as a neglectful mother who never supported her son because we BARELY see her unless she's freaking out about something her son did. Either play into that or have her be different.

4) Endeavour and Dabi time. I said before that I prefer Endeavour's redemption to Bakugou's and I stick to it. But I would also kind of... hmm... okay so Endeavour is convinced he was in the right. However because he gets to be number one, he ends up going: Oh I didn't need to do that, so I'm sad now, you have to forgive me. I then want Shouto and Natsuo to go: No we don't. Fuyumi and Rei... I'll admit I like the idea of Fuyumi being very much: yes we do and we can be a family again!! I also though want this ideal broken for her and her to understand her brother's don't have to forgive their dad.

As for Rei, I said before that we don't know the full story with her and while Horikoshi is scrambling to make Endeavour less bad I do find that the idea Rei wasn't completely innocent is an interesting idea. Rei's pushing for more kids is something I would want to keep, tying it into their marriage and having her want Shouto to be like: hey so it worked, I didn't suffer this for nothing. I would also though have her be slightly neglectful of her elder kids. Not intentionally though. Her mental health is something I would also focus on. Staying years in a mental hospital isn't as far fetched as some think, and I would really have it be adressed. Which then has Shouto being confronted with how society messed up his family because his rosy view of his mother and her protecting him gets shattered by Natsuo. I want Shouto to have to face the fact there was a lot going on because in reality that's what abuse is like.

This would then tie into Dabi who I'd keep mostly the same. I want Dabi to know he's in the wrong and not care. I want him to want revenge KNOWING it's fucked up but wanting it anyway. Because I love just a complete dick and the idea of it being Dabi is fun because I want him to have a sympathetic past but be unsympathetic. I would then though also focus on the idea of him being a villain and I would show his victims so we're aware of it. His arson cases would be discussed from the first chapter as a 'hey so this guy is shady'.

5) which brings us to all the LOV. Give us reasons they're villains and show us their crimes. Show Toga stalking and killing, show Spinner being shunned and resorting to crime, give us them as criminals. I'm firmly no redemption if only because I think it's more interesting but I still want to see more. (Also Magne needs to live).

6) Overhaul should have been in the news and his drugs should have been known to be a thing. It builds him up and then we get a gut punch when we learn Eri is the one whom the drugs come from.

7) Iida and Uraraka needed more spotlight as Izuku's friends and I would have Todoroki stay a friendly rival to Izuku. Shiggy is his big rival though.

And... that's what I would do that's different i guess.
