Chapter 65 Status Checks

Now that we're well into the arc, I want to take stock of where our major players are.

All Those Guilty MFers and the Hishaku

Chihiro: still doing MC things with the plot, nothing's happening without him any time soon (probably). Beat up and tired but still going. He's guilty over a few things, namely 1. being a "murderer" that ignored the adults who wanted him to avoid their mistakes and 2. Hakuri being out of commission in the hospital. Vowed to become Hakuri's samurai, protect Iori, and learn the Iai White Purity style in 24 hours.

Hakuri: recovering off-screen in the Kamunabi hospital by getting special treatment to heal the nerves he damaged, as far as we know. Not likely to appear soon but he's definitely not forgotten. Guilty over what happened with Ice Lady and Uruha, feels like he needs to measure up to Chihiro's assessment of his "value". Asked the Masumi to protect Chihiro in his stead.

The Hishaku: John, Hiruhiko, and Worst Jeanist are holed up in what passes for the Hishaku's HQ it seems, letting Kuguri and Toto do the dirty work of capturing Iori. The whereabouts and status of Hatshaku, Jane Hishaku, Samurai Hishaku, and the other two core members are unknown.

Iori: Successfully rescued by Chihiro and the Masumi and safe for at least the next 24 hours. Told to make her choice about keeping her memories or returning to blissful ignorance once she gets them all back.

The Kamunabi: Observing the situation by letting Chihiro and the Masumi handle it on their behalf. Doing something shady with Uruha's corpse too, no doubt. No updates on what Hiyuki and Tafuku are doing at this time.

The Masumi: Protecting Chihiro because they feel indebted to Hakuri after he saved their lives. Letting Chihiro steer the course while they devote themselves to protecting him and Iori. Want to re-apply the seal on Iori's memories but will likely respect the choice she makes.

Samura: Hiding out somewhere in Japan waiting for someone to try and use an Enchanted blade so he can teleport to their location and murk them. Guilty as fuck over whatever The Incident was during the Seitei War, killing in general, and being a bad example for Iori to follow.

Shiba: Doing offscreen things as usual probably. Guilty as hell about not doing enough to steer Chihiro away from the path he chose or being able to stop him from risking his life.

Where Are All the Blades, Anyway?

Enten- with Chihiro, but he can't use it right now. Unknown if he bonded to it again or not yet.

Kumeyuri - with Hiruhiko, but he can't use it right now. Bonded to him and he intends to master it purely on instinct, much to Kuguri's disgust.

Kuregumo - broken by Chihiro. The hilt was used up and crumbled into dust, but Chihiro still has the tip of the blade in his possession (per Word of God in an interview).

Magatsumi/The Shinuchi: resealed and with the Kamunabi.

Tobimune - with Samura, who is using the Owl power to suppress the usage of other enchanted blades.

Unknown Blade 1 - implied to be with Kuguri. Likely belongs to the Sushi Chef bearer, with whom its bond is still active.

Unknown Blade 2 - presumed to be the Girlish Bearer's blade that she's still bonded to; with the Hishaku.

Who Are/Were the Bearers?

Chihiro Rokuhira: Kunishige's son and the main character. We know who he is.

Hiruhiko: A member of the Hishaku that's the same age as Chihiro, but with way more screws loose. Enjoys killing and thinks friendship means trying to kill each other over personal differences. Has a father-son like relationship to John.

Misaka: Kuregumo's former bearer; the first to die to the Hishaku three years ago before the rest were rounded up into the sanso. All other details unknown.

Seiichi Samura: Seitei War veteran who blinded himself out of guilt over killing. Iori's absent father who wanted her to forget him. Assistant Master of the Iai White Purity style and Uruha's former instructor. Intends to kill both the Hishaku and the rest of the living Bearers then himself. Current obstacle for Chihiro to overcome this arc.

Genichi Sojo: Parasocial obsessive fan of Kunishige's who worshipped his headcanon of the man instead of the real thing. Child torturer, murderer, and the genius who provided the Hishaku with usable datensenki shards. Fought Chihiro with Kuregumo and died explosively.

The Sword Master: Magatsumi's weilder, currently imprisoned in Kamunabi HQ. Doesn't seem wholly sane.

Unknown Man: A sushi chef with one blind eye. A Seitei War veteran who really likes making sushi. Bonded to the blade Kuguri's carrying.

Unknown Woman: A young-looking woman. Bonded to the other unknown blade in the Hishaku's possession.

Yoji Uruha: Kumeyuri's former bearer; a Seitei War veteran who was killed by Samura. User of the Iai White Purity style, Samura's former student. Body is currently in autopsy at the Kamunabi's medical facilities.

Iv got a ton of headcannon RD thoughts in my head right now so under a cut (since I can be long winded lol) here I’m gonna talk a lot about them. Mostly pertaining to all of the characters

So to start off

Intern (and my own thoughts on them):

My own version of the intern would probably be pretty static- very simple humanoid looking robot, uses wheels to be pushed or roll around so going up elevators is how they get up and down. Still controlled by a remote intern and due to being pretty prototyped they can’t do much other then what the robot it’s built for (pushing buttons!) They do have a simple display that shows a heart rate on their arm and a face display for basic emotions.

Samurai and Insomniac

These guys are weird so their backgrounds get to be just as weird. Samurai and Insomniac both came to Middlesea from Japan (Samurai) and Korea (Insomniac) to compete in a worldwide tournament of katana sparring. Insomniac ended up losing to Samurai after getting no sleep the night before and admittedly got a bit peeved about it. They had a run in when Samurai was celebrating at a nightclub and had a rematch on the dance floor. One drunken fight later they ended up at the hospital and have to be there awhile to sort out the paperwork. They’re on much better terms now and respect each other’s skills.

Bonus stuff: Samurai is bad at speaking English but is very good at writing it, Insomniac is vice versa this. Samurai due to the struggle to show emotions through words usually emotes things physically and doesn’t mind stuff happening as long as he gets to be included. Insomniac has insomnia because of the time difference and not being able to adjust

Logan and Hailey

I feel they’re probably about 15? Old enough to be highschoolers but still pretty childish at times. They’re also both in dance! (I mean com’on two kids being able to just break into slow dance together is pretty impressive) Hailey loves to talk about said fact but Logan is pretty self conscious about being one of the few boys in it. Big baseball fans but didn’t ever play it before lucky as they were a bit scared of being demolished. Met through the before mentioned dance class and hit it off very quickly. Other then that, they’re pretty typical, optimistic and overly energetic teens.

Cole

He’s not originally from Middlesea but instead a few towns over. Got kicked from home as a final choice by his parents when he kept avoiding to get a job and hyper focused on music making. They gave him 1500$ on the way out and still wanted the best for him but in his emotions, cut them off before jumping all the way to Middlesea by train. Shortly after arriving, Cole had his first very bad SVT attack from stress and trying to chug energy shots to stay awake after a very long train ride and got taken to the hospital. Now can’t decide if he wants to get out of the hospital already for music inspiration and to be free or try to stay longer for the sake of having a place to stay and see the new friends he’s made.

Nicole

Gave up on music only a year after highschool when her less well off family couldn’t support her musical ambitions and chose to leave it behind for the sake of a career. Despite not having the title, basically acts as the cafe manager after most her team got laid off. It’s how she can get away with locking up early sometimes or just chilling in the cafe after hours. Dyes her nearly black hair green constantly and learned how to do it herself.

Mr and Mrs Stevenson

Mrs Stevenson is the owner of a bird sanctuary while Mr Stevenson has been retired for awhile due to previous injuries. He always called Mrs in the mornings as she had to always leave early in the morning to take care of her birds. The ones with bow ties are all rescues who were taken in since they were babies and lived at their house. Taught them all how to sing with her and Mr.

Miner

Small town mfer, always took care of his injuries at home and hasn’t really ever been to a hospital till now. Around 35 yrs old and works as a sulfur miner for a team of geologists. Has been mining since 20~ but that time has seriously been taking affect on his body now. Likely won’t be returning to his work after the hospital when he finds out the ramifications of his work. Everyone’s friend, even friendly and kind to Edega.

HE WAS FINALLY CONFIDENT ENOUGH IN HIMSELF AND HIS PLACE IN THE GAANG AND THE WAR AND THE WORLD THAT HE KNEW HE COULD REDIRECT IT AND WIN.

Think about it: Katara and Zuko get trapped together. They bond over the fact that the fire nation took their mothers away at a young age. Katara offers to heal Zuko's scar, thinking, hoping, it will heal HIM and get him to stop chasing them. And in a way, it eventually does. Do you think anyone other than Iroh has shown him that much kindness? Looked at his face without pity or disgust? And then he betrays her, but he also betrays himself and he KNOWS IT. So to make up for all of his mistakes, he sacrifices himself to save her. He knows the lightning will kill her. He tries to redirect it, but it gives him another scar. A scar that holds no shame, no disgust, no anger or rage or disappointment or hatred for a man's only son.

It's a scar that shows bravery, sacrifice, and strength. It's a scar that will remain for the rest of his life, but it is a reminder of what he was willing to risk to protect the person who showed him kindness, and to save the rest from having to grieve such a loss. The group who showed him forgiveness and friendship and love.

THINK about it. Zuko has a scar from speaking up about something he disagreed with, a scar to show the fire lord's unforgiving nature. We KNEW the WHOLE TIME just HOW BAD ozai was BECAUSE of Zuko's scar. And then after choosing not to heal it, choosing to betray katara (which inadvertently SAVES AANG BTW), he also CHOOSES TO GET ANOTHER SCAR TO SAVE HER

I found it interesting that both question him, playing Devil's Advocate to him in a sense.

It feels less like Kyoshi is like "I found killing to be more humane than imprisoning people" and more that she's just.......testing his logic.

Of course they don't go as into detail as Disha's conversation. (Kyo why you so tight lipped? ;w;)

This might be because Kyoshi's conversation feels more like..... She's trying to comfort Roku. Try to set his mind at ease about how he killed someone. As well as assure him that he is a good fit as the Avatar (the whole "look within comment later" because mfer keeps doubting himself).

Both conversations revolve around his duties as the Avatar. Disha's trying to get him to shed the one nation mindset. Kyoshi about his self doubt. (Ironically in Kyoshi's convo, he is in a conflicting mindset of two nations, wanting to reject the Fire Nation side of "yeah you had to kill" vs the Air Nomad way of "no you should find a different alternative. Which reminds me a lot of her, how she was trapped between two mindsets. Something she doesn't want to do vs what she wants to do. Her Earth Kingdom and Air Nomad heritages conflicting within her. Her morals from Rangi and Lao Ge conflicting within her).

I dunno I found it REALLY INTERSTING but.... I'm also not sure how deep I should read into it. (All in all I found Roku's change over the novels a bit too sudden and rocky and just not handled well. This combined with Disha trying to be like "Kyoshi I guess looked within and that's why she chose to die" BS......esp considering we had two novels of Kyoshi yapping non stop when it came to analyzing herself and her actions. So while I think the novel wants to be like "she's imparting words of a mistake she failed to make"....I just don't buy the mistake cause it's not well written, so instead I see it more as "Kyoshi sees what Roku needs to hear" because it makes more sense and lines up more with her comforting him in that scene).

Sorry for the side rant, it's just hard reconciling the canon of this book with both Kyoshi novels and what we know of her char in ATLA/LoK.

Side, still related, take: (gonna be honest, looping back to Kyoshi's convo and the prison thing. I'm surprise they didn't bring up "rehabilitation," I feel like that's something Kyoshi would've tried to do esp since she's aware of the concept in a way when she comments on how "She could see Jinpa trying to convince Kirima/Wong into leaving the daofei lifestyle, they probs would steal his bison." I dunno, maybe this'll be something that we see in the next novel. I def think Kyoshi would've tried rehabilitation, esp since she saw how Te changed. If she didn't, it'd feel weird ngl.

It's strange, this all started out normally—just curiosity making its rounds. But it never did go away, it stayed, festered in his hidden desires until one thought was left: just once.

The first kill is always the messiest, you're an amateur who's hungry for experience. But William Afton strived for perfection, and besides, it wasn't like he was in this alone. As William bled out the voice of Henry rang out in his head, there's so much emotion in his voice yet it all muddied together to rid William of any understanding. There's a heavy feeling in the air, the words of William ringing true. Every thought Henry will have, every action moving forward William will be there for. Dead as he may be the ghost of his memories will forever haunt Henry.

"Don't you... don't you see? Dear Henry, if you really didn't want her dead... you simply had to stop me the first time it happened. But you didn't... and here we are." Red splattered across Henry's face, not unlike what countless children's faces looked like the day they died. There's something so exciting, so... enticing about blood on Henry's face—it suits him.

Now Henry was going on a path much like his own, finding his own sins, and bathing in them. Allowing them to cleanse your body, tuck inside every crevice of your very being until you're nothing but the sin you've created. William's only regret is that he won't be able to watch it with his own eyes, but at least he knows one thing.

"Don't you see, dear Henry? I've won."

omg so i got 2 asks about them, so i’m gonna split my ramble into 2 asks ^_^ starting off with red and ash respectively and how they’re paradise lost coded! (get ready for a longgg post under the cut)

ok so i’m gonna. tldr paradise lost for a second but basically paradise lost is about satan’s fall from grace (but this is. literally bible fanfic so basically it explores more themes than the actual bible does) but red is soooo adam coded and ash is (semi) lucifer coded to me .

starting off with adam: the reason he ate the fruit from the tree of knowledge is because he loved eve so much that, in that moment, he couldn’t even begin to imagine the tragedy that was about to happen because of that. even if he knew it was wrong. the only thing that mattered in that moment was himself and eve and he the fact he was willing to do anything for her. and that was the tragedy of the fruit being eaten. because right after he ate it, all of the love he had for eve seemed to disappear away and be replaced with hate and bitterness. (and the love wasnt enough)

so uh. tying this back into reddoons. his guy is willing to follow people to the ends of the earth, even to the point of self destruction. so just. the idea of red being a fallen angel who just wanted to do what was right. but what he thought was right wasn’t the “right” choice because he wasn’t following the orders of god. he just did hat he thought was right in the moment, but it wasn’t really right. and as a result he lost everything he ever knew and became the thing he swore never to be. also insert team chaos parallel here and i am SOOOO bonkers over this ver of fallen angel red u DONT UNDERSTAND!!!

now. on the other hand, ash being a fallen angel is because of an entirely different reason. in my brain

i mentioned he’s (semi) inspired by lucifer and. well tbh a lot of themes Do match up with a lot of ash’s mantras and i just find it sooooo fascinating. MOVING ON basically the reason why lucifer was created even though god knew he was going to rebel and being his beloved humans into sin was because lucifer represented free will and without free will there wouldn’t be love. so like. his creation was kinda a needed sacrifice as a result. anyways eventually when gods son/jesus was created (dont. question the timing btw god is above time so Ignore the time) lucifer was extremely jealous because although he was the most powerful angel, he wasn’t Exactly on gods level. (also bc of this he invents sin and later death but that’s irrelevant to the inspiration i get for ash)

but eventually lucifer caused a rebellion and upon god INVENTING PAIN TO DEFEAT HIM, satan decided to jump off of heaven instead of facing god himself. (also bc he represents free will he Chose to fall as well as rebel against god which is very. ashswagcore. to me)

but yeah i am just. bc of that the idea of ash being a fallen angel by choice and as a rebellion against god is just. very Him i think yk? the jealously. the willingness to do the impossible because of his ego. the way he’s very tied into themes of freedom and rebellion i think. (basically all of lucifer’s only positive traits because. mfer invents sin and death and caused humanity to fall. uh)

so ya! thats the ideas of both of them i have rn. i have a Ton of thoughts abt their relationships which i will elaborate in the next ask but. man they make me soooooo. i am ill in the head abt their themes and how paradise lost plays into it . man.

So while Reshiram and Zekrom are still kinda dicks to Hilda and Hilbert, I feel like they’re still kinda chill with them after a while. Like they’re not fighting for control 24/7 like Kyurem is to Iris, but they’ll still try once in a while. Like maybe they’re still healing after that fight Ghetsis caused

But I was thinking about why Kyurem would chose a 10 yo instead of waiting for someone else to show up. And like what if he chose her because he thought it would be easy for her to relent and let him take over her body once he threatens her with death. But Iris probably has a shit ton of will power if she’s kept control up until this point

Ough but yeah, would Drayden (and the rest of the League) even know it’s Iris that’s Kyurems new host? Cause she was used for Kyurems power by Team Plasma. Also Kyurem was practically tortured in Bw2 to make it use its power to attack cities. Can’t imagine the pain Iris feels. And if I’m remembering correctly, Kyurem was electrocuted or something to make it fire a Glaciate

So they probably did the same thing to Iris just in a smaller scale to not kill her, but still fucking painful. She can never catch a break, first tortured by Kyurem then by Team Plasma

One last thing, but imagine how the League is feeling. Their Champion was attacked and then kidnapped by Team Plasma which is bad in itself. But now they don’t know if she’s being held in the Frigate or another unknown location. So when the Frigate got destroyed after a few icy attacks, it’s like a 50/50 chance their champion was involved in that attack so now they don’t even know if she survived

Imagine how much that'd fuck up Drayden tho, having to see his granddaughter go through hell and back, being tortured by Plasma, imagine if Ghetsis made Drayden watch as they electrocute Iris tho, and using her and Kyurem's powers to freeze Opelucid over

Man imagine how much that'd fuck up Drayden tho imagine him just wanting to kill Ghetsis on the spot but he can't bc everything's frozen over and he's trapped and he's fighting off Zinzolin, but that mfer was just a distraction, and Ghetsis and the rest of Plasma flew of somewhere else

But also imagine if that really was the final trigger for Iris, like this concept led to this maybe?

Anyways yeah the league bcmdnd idk, imagine them trying to look for her too, and ofc the people of Lacunosa had said they last saw the Frigate near the Chasm, so they went there, searched every nook and cranny, but they never found Iris. Maybe she really hid herself from them, maybe she's really dead, either way,, well,, the E4 has to tell Drayden of the loss, how they never found Iris or any trace of her.

And just ncmxnd ough Iris showing herself to Nate bc Kyurem still needs the Splicers, and maybe Drayden gave Nate the Splicers still, hoping that Nate would track down Plasma and save Iris from Kyurem, but now that he found her, she's probs too far gone already, she's like, trying so hard to stop Kyurem from hurting Nate, and while they were both weak, Iris knew not to underestimate the boundary pkmn, as he's so so fucking determined to get the Splicers

Now tho would Nate even tell the League where Iris is, or maybe Kyurem got him trapped too?? Or maybe,, Iris and Kyurem really became one,, like, idk how the describe this sorry my braincells are so dead I just got home from my class, but like, do you see my vision for this?? Iris managing to fight off Kyurem that their souls or smth clashed, and it got to the point that they really became a singular being, one without any of its memories anymore, an empty husk. 2. their first kiss - i've said this before but for my personal headcanons abt sevenbella they kiss for the first time on arabella's 21st birthday bc he got her a really thoughtful gift that she wanted for a WHILE and just that feeling of someone completely understanding you inside and out they know you better than you know urself etc. anyways she thinks abt how that arabella would feel if she knew how it all played out .. would she still kiss him? would she still date him? the answer is yes ofc but it eats her up LMFAO

3. when they first met - just two middle schoolers who had no idea the impact they would have on each other ..
