Even though I grew up in America and have traveled throughout Mexico, this was my very first time ever having a chimichanga which is basically a fried burrito. Enjoyed this tasty Mexican dish in the heart of Kuta at a famous place called Don Juan.

Covid March 2024
Covid? Really? After dodging this disease since it began through 4 countries , I got it on a mexican plane. Only one on the plane wearing a mask, which proves the conspiracy theory.. Masks give you Covid.
I had no symptoms until arriving in Corozal, then accelerating from a dry cough to sneezing, low fever, lethargy. Hard to tell lethargy from laziness, but the fever was the tell tale. Tested positive(hot red lines instantly 2 days in a row), rats. So, self isolate for 10 days from 1st symptoms, which may be more than needed, but folks here are mostly not vaccinated, so best be safe.
Luckily I'm staying in a little house, with hot plate, tiny fridge, and choice of fan or AC. Comfy bed, airy porch with Adirondack chairs, hot shower. Air B&B, and the landlady lives in the big house, so she checked on me daily. She runs a dog rescue center here, currently 6 dogs as well as her own fat German shepard and even fatter Staffordshire. These are all friendly dogs and I'm one of the pack, giving neck rubs and pets equally. like all tropical dogs, they sleep most of the day, saving up for the nightly barkfest, when all the dogs in the neighbourhood(and everybody has at least one dog) bark out the news, scaring imaginary thieves, making a racket and generally having dog fun. Earplugs.
Being sick away from home is boring. There,s nothing to do except watch old movies and veg out. I do have a food delivery service, ordering on Whats app and getting stuff dropped off by motorcycle courier. Small fee, and way easier than shopping my self in a series of tiny stores. I can get lots of fruit, especially citrus for vitamin C, and chicken fully frozen. All commercial chickens in Belize are factory produced and frozen. Sanitary I hope. Potatoes, onions, peppers, all are here. There is a tiny fruit stand one half mile down the road who had one of the best papayas I,ve ever tasted. So, eat, doze, internet. Sounds like a winter at home except it's 32 degrees.
Bloody hot, pretty humid, with a strong trade wind to stir the air. Days a re 12 hours long, with happy mosquitoes at night (screens) which means no sitting out in the tropical evenings. That's a travel agent myth. Everyplace I,ve been has mosquitoes, from Bali to Hanoi, Costa Rica to Mexico. That's how Dengue spreads as well as Malaria. Never had malaria despite so much tropical traveling, and never want it!
Corozal is flat, hot and boring. there are no beaches, just muck, and no scenic attractions. There are some tiny ruins, but having climbed most of the pyramids in CA, so what. Seems like a place where weary travelers crossed the Mexican border and stalled. Mostly blacks with some chinese, and an increasing population of Mexicans and central americans,. Supposedly an English speaking country, lots speak only Spanish, and the locals have an accent that needs google translate. Friendly enough, but crime is rife, and there,s no safe nightlife. A typical 3rd world mix of very poor and very rich with a thin layer of rising middle class. The traditional wooden homes raised up on pilings are being replaced by the more durable, bug proof cement block shacks. These vary from simple cubicles to 3 story palaces, depending on the owners wealth. The handyman here tells about earlier times when he had a Dory(rowboat) on the New river which divides Belize from mexico and had a thriving trade, moving bales of grass into Mexico and illegal immigrants into Belize. Boats would anchor offshore to drop off goods. Were there police? Yes, he said, but only 3 of them, and they wanted no trouble. Then came cocaine, big money, gangs, and cartels.Guns and gang wars. He quit in time, but now there are shoot outs, contract killings, and , trouble. Parts of the highway are no go zones at night, and chopped up bodies get dumped into the cane fields to be burned beyond recognition. Ugh!
I recall 20 years ago meeting a nice local guy in Placencia who had built some beautiful hardwood cabins for rent. Financed by bale fishing. What's that i asked? Drug runners chased by coast guard boats would dump their sealed bales of pot(50 pounds each), and locals would recover some for resale. my friend found 3, and sold the first one to the dealers for $5000. Second time they told him 2500,and when he brought the 3rd one they flourished guns and said he had to work for them. He said take this one for free and I no longer have a boat, goodbye.. Made enough cash to build his resort and retire. While we were chatting a gorgeous woman came bleary eyed out of the cabin, Miss Belize 3 years before. She was there with her boyfriend, shaved headed and wild eyed. Just out of Belize prison, one of the worst in the world. He did 4 years for manslaughter. Hey, my friend asked, how's Jimmy doing in there? Oh said Mr convict. He got the chop! What? Yah mon, we standing side by side in the morning count line when somebody behind him reach around and cut his throat. Nobody say nothing. Literally: Hey mon, how Jeemy do dere? Oh, heem. He done got da chop.Say wha? Yah mon, we all standin in da mawnin count line and some foker dey reach about and slash him troat. Nobody say nuttin, yo knaow?
I do meet interesting people! Makes covid sound like fun!

First 5 Days in Bali
Following our trip to Bromo, a third person joined my brother and me in Malang, Steve Larson. We all met in the late 1970's, when we were in our early teens. My family had moved into the neighborhood Steve lived in and we've been close ever since. When my brother said he'd come to visit for two weeks, I invited Steve as well and then I went into travel agent mode - something I'm gaining experience at here in Indonesia. Back when we started making plans, I'd told Steve that Malang was not worth spending much time in. I've since discovered more (as recent Tumblr posts suggest) of interest. But the plans were made back then, and they were solely concentrated on 10 days in Bali. This post will focus on the first 5 days. But first, Steve did spend three nights in Malang, and we were able to show him around a little bit. We walked in the neighborhood of my university. And then later we went to Alun-Alun (the central park in town), Kampungs Warna Warni and Tridi (Jodipon), and finally to the circle at City Hall, where we dined at the Hotel Tugu, and afterwards wandered through the endless rooms of the family's art and furniture collections. It was a nice taste of Malang - but indicative of the limitations of the place. Our travels began with a car ride from Malang to Surabaya, where my brother and I had our most serious tussle (over the speed and recklessness of our driver). The plane was late and the general anxiety of traveling was manifest. But we gratefully arrived in the Seminyak neighborhood of Denpasar at about 10 pm. Our driver, Ahmad Barman, is both a fine driver and tour guide. The accommodations in Seminyak were ideal, three comfy bedrooms with air-con (the sweaty heat never ends in Denpasar). The living area was all exposed to the open air, and there was a sizable pool and (for Martin and Steve) a pool table. We sampled some of the tequila we'd bought at the Denpasar airport, and then went out for dinner. We found a local Mexican food place, and ordered margaritas and fish tacos. It was lovely, and then we wandered the main drag in our neighborhood, trying to find the beach and another place to relax and enjoy. There were some night clubs, blasting music and spilling revellers onto the street, but these weren't enticing. We did sit in a couple of places for beers, but it was late and there wasn't much to observe. So we went back to the place we were staying in. We listened to Marquette win their first NCAA tournament game. Martin and Steve started playing pool, and I played some guitar and swam naked, and we drank until 4 a.m. for me, and 5 a.m. for them.  That set us back for the next morning, but I had a date with my landlord to meet for brunch. So I met Pak Barman and went out with a pretty strong headache, while Martin and Steve slept until mid-afternoon. My landlord, Jany, is a very nice person and we had a nice conversation about life in Bali and the future, while I ate a fine smoked duck salad. Then she took me shopping for a new shoulder bag, and I bought Alice a colorful cloth, for a scarf or whatever she likes. When I returned the boys were barely moving. But we gathered ourselves and had Pak Barman bring us to the Kuta beach, where we watched a perfectly acceptable sunset and had a sushi dinner. Back at the airbnb, we took it easier and prepared for our next stage of the journey - Ubud. I've been to Ubud before, and I made our accommodation near the center of town, but in the Kajeng Rice Field, an oasis of pastorality in the hurly-burly of a small town overwhelmed by tourists. The hotel wasn't so great (Martin and I had to share a bed for the first time since we were 10-11 years-old), but the outside was fantastic. It has a pool which is almost medicinal in cooling off an aging, over-heated body. The light on the rice paddies, golden and green, palm trees interspersed throughout the field, and fringing the edges, the shadows, the multiple species of birds, the clouds gathering and swaying overhead, all convened to offer a continuing display of nature's beauty. We sat on our porch for hours and hours each day, watching the light change, the birds fly, the clouds pass, the stars come out. It was bucolic. And then we'd walk 5 minutes to Ubud, a place being developed to accommodate the hundreds of thousands of tourists who come each year. The restaurants serve quality food. There are temples galore. But the sidewalks are small with foreigners swarming. Martin stayed at the hotel recovering from our indulgence of the previous days. Steve and I wandered the streets and came across a football field where several neighborhoods were constructing their Ogoh-Ogohs, for the upcoming Nyepi (New Year's) Festival. Nyepi means "Silent Day." So, comparable Mardi Gras before Ash Wednesday, the neighborhoods build monumental chicken wire and papier-mache monsters. They parade these through town, making tons of noise to stir up the evil spirits of the island, they then burn the ogoh-ogohs and hide in their houses for Nyepi, while the evil spirits roam around and realize that nobody is actually there, and are fooled into leaving the island. The monsters are pretty terrifying. Half-human, half-beast, with wild eyes, sharp, long teeth, and every manner of mythical bizarrity, vagina dentata, eyeless, winged-lions, gigantic tigers, Gene-Simmons-like-demon-tongues, dagger-like-nails and teeth.. So Steve and I were impressed and we found ourselves very much anticipating both the day before, and Nyepi (which is taken most seriously, and woe to the tourist who won't stay inside). More on that next posting. We had a lovely dinner and brought some food to the hotel for Martin, and we stayed up late, watching the night sky, playing guitar, singing, talking.  The next day, Steve was dealing with a head-cold, but we trudged on. We went to the Dalem Agung Temple, the grandest in town, but it was closed. It was interesting to see it so quiet, compared to the last time I was there (a holiday with hive-like activity). We explored the river-confluence where the temple is located. The whole place exudes spirituality. I dig it. It was hot, but that didn't stop us from hiking the Campuhan Ridge Trail. We sweated, and Steve had to overcome his sinus pain, and the grass was much longer than when I was there last, so the wind didn't cut any of the steam. But it's a lovely walk and we were happy to come upon the rice fields at the top, where we had some drinks, enjoyed the breeze, and cooled off.   Back down at the hotel, we prepared to return to the Ubud Water Palace (Pura Taman Saraswati) for dinner and a gamelan and dance show. The Water Palace is a photographer's dream, two lotus ponds in full bloom on either side of a walkway which leads to the gates of a temples with dozens of sculptures, of dragons, of warriors, of garudas, of musicians, and at the end of the day, it catches the sunset's colors in a startling manner. We arrived and took our seats at the Lotus Pond Cafe, where we watched the show and ate a fine dinner. The gamelan had some strings and horns, which is a bit unusual, and was nicely restrained. The dancing was graceful and multi-faceted -  a warrior dance and a flirtation dance among them, which ended with the dancer pulling members of the audience up to flirt with.  Then back to the rice field for a quiet night among the bats and bugs. We saw lightning in the distance, heard some thunder rumbling around, and felt a bit of rain, and it was all in character for Ubud, as spiritual a place as I've ever been. And, dear friends, that was just the first five days! The second half of the journey comes in the next posting. Make sure to look at my Instagram account (D. Selby Fing/Bugs Pacino) for the pics.

Okay bear with me as I try and pick through this, but something I've seen over the last few months in ofmd fandom, and more often as of late, is the idea that "Izzy's Revenge" is meant to act as a reference to "Montezuma's Revenge" as a clever way of aligning Izzy with a colonizing force facing retribution. Which I just think is bullshit I'm sorry 😭
Montezuma's Revenge is a term used to refer to "Traveler's diarrhea" where the basic definition is:
Tumblr media
The idea is that "Izzy's Revenge" is a reference to it, and specifically that this is a way of showing that Izzy is a colonizer facing consequences due to his racism. I feel like I see this brought up most often in convos explaining why Izzy is a racist?
Tumblr media
My issue with this is that like,,, this kinda just straight up ignores the fact that Montezuma's Revenge isn't a clever joke created by Latines to mock colonizers, but is a lowkey racist terminology white people use as a way of saying that other countries' foods will give make you ill. Like just absolutely zero acknowledgment of this in any capacity!
The term first showed up in the 1950's and was used by white people as a way of presenting Mexican food as unsanitary.
Other forms you see the term in are: the Aztec two-step, Gandhi's Revenge, Delhi Belly, Bombay Belly, Gyppy Tummy (Egypt), The Cairo Two-step, Pharaoh's Revenge, Mummy's Tummy, Bali Belly
Like are we noticing a theme here?
It's completely nonsensical to suggest that it's an anticolonialist term, and it feels like a reaffirmation of racist stereotypes to assume that this is what Izzy's suffering from.
One explanation of the racial implications behind it that I thought was well explained:
Tumblr media
Javiar Cabral actually references it explicitly when discussing the internalized shame he felt around Mexican food as a child:
Tumblr media
(Also, weirdly enough, found it on a list of a character's top 25 most racist jokes??)
Idk! It's so weird to me to see it brought up multiple times, completely decontextualized and pushing this fake "legend" as a way of coding a character as a colonizer facing comeuppance for his imperialism, and furthering the normalization of the term.
Really the joke can just stay as "sounds like an intestinal condition" since "food comes back to hurt you" is a pretty straightforward explanation without having to do some weird fake woke thing of explaining how this is actually a harsh criticism of Izzy as a colonizer.

Tanzania stole my heart 🇹🇿
My dad has been traveling to different countries since before I was even a thought and he told me to “pick somewhere, anywhere” I want to go
I said Zanzibar, Tanzania 🇹🇿
It’s so beautiful
I feel so ignorant though because all of these years I’ve wanted to travel and I never even considered Africa (in my defense I like cheap and tropical destinations like Bali, Thailand, Philippines over ritzy expensive non beach places like Paris) mainly because when you(Me) think of Africa I used to think of really poor or the Serengeti, no In between, I didn’t think “vacation” I have, however, always wanted to get involved with going to third world countries and feeding and clothing the kids/locals but like I said I didn’t think of it as a vacation spot
This past year with all the racial issues and corona I found this Instagram page @chakabars and he always posted about how no one on his island (Zanzibar) has coronavirus and he showed how healthy he eats and all the stuff he was eating he would just be picking from the earth, skin glowing, jumping from waterfalls, swimming with turtles, just a chill vibe, and I’m just like WHERE THE FUCK IS THIS FAIRYLAND? Found out it was Tanzania did research and WOW 😳 I found so many other countries and region in Africa during my research and now I’m SOOOO hype to go, not just for the beaches (although the ocean is what really draws me to a place) but for the culture and experiences. I don’t wanna stay at fancy hotels I want the home stay/hostel/cheap air bnb feel.
Zanzibar is known as spice island and it’s pretty self explanatory why. Me with my culinary background is so hype to buy all the spices and see how they are grown and just live like a local.
So then a couple days later my dad tells me to pick somewhere closer to America (Carribean, Mexico or Europe )😩 becasue he won’t be able to get off of work for that long (I want to stay 2 weeks minimum) so now I’m just like ugh 😣 Europe is far down on my travel list solely because I’m a beach bum and I like a more chill laid back vibe, Mexico also never really appealed to me but you know ME I did some research and there are definitely some cool swim holes, waterfalls, and marine life so I wouldn’t be opposed to going there but I’m not a fan of Mexican food AT ALL so that would be hard because the other reason I want to travel is for the different cuisines, sooo I guess the carribean somewhere it is which is totally fine but I had my set on Africa so now I can’t get as hype about like Jamaica or something😩
HELP! I need suggestions on where I should tell my dad I want to go!!
