Look, I know that shorter transformations are nice change of pace but to me Cure Wonderful's henshin is too fast-paced in my book that we almost barely know what's going on for its 14 seconds length. And we have DeliPa-style roll call with some Sailor Moon vibes on it.
And not to brag about another anime here but even Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS is an improvement. Despite being shorter than Wonderful by only taking 7-8 seconds to finish, I like how they concentrate on one part to another and how the second half goes cause otherwise Playmaker and Soulburner's henshin might end up being too stiff (yes, I'm talking about you, TMMN's Mew Mint).
But at least Cure Wonderful's henshin isn't as worse as Healing Stick users from HealinGood because she did have some energy for it. I wish the process is longer, though. And can we have another henshin where hair is done midway or at the end of the process in future Pretty Cure series, please?

Posted these OC fun facts on discord, so I'm posting them here for preservation :3
Thistle:
Favorite Color: (of all time)Mauve Pink and (currently) Acid Lime Green
Favorite Flower: Cactus Blossoms but uses, uh, Thistles as a signature flower. He likes them because it reminds him of him and Surge together (it's pink, green & spikey)
What they would take on a deserted island: A laptop & a classic romance novel (he's a sucker for the classics & old hollywood, he wildly misinterprets them, but he loves them)
Idea/Inspiration for them: based on a bumblekast question/description about a Glitch ver. Amy, but I liked the idea of Surge just having a rabid fanboy (different from Kit) and gave him a more eccentric flair. Design wise I wanted him to look like a punk version of a normal schoolboy, and tried to make his personality more feminine & extroverted (since Surge leans more masculine & Surge & Kit are both more introverted). I also pulled inspiration from few obsessive characters like Kish from Tokyo Mew Mew & Lum from Urusei Yatsura
Quake:
Favorite Color: Coral Red, but any jewel tones she think are very pretty
Favorite Flower: Shepherd's Purse, she likes it for it's medicinal values and also thinks it's cute and simple
What they would take on a deserted island: She would think it'd be a great time for meditating so probably a sketch diary to keep track of her thoughts/draw anything neat she finds
Idea/Inspiration for them: I like powerful ladies, I'm also plus sized so any plus sized rep in my favorite media is welcomed, and noticed that Blaze doesn't have a powerhouse lady companion (aside from herself) so I just kinda took it as a challenge to see if I could make it work and I think I found the right balance.
Pop & Crackers:
Favorite Color: Navy Blue & Off-white, it reminds her of her favorite sports team
Favorite Flower: "Why would I care about lame things like flowers?" - Pop. Crackers likes Gardenias, they smell nice.
What they'd take to a deserted island: Stuff to play beach volleyball
Idea/Insp: Also based on a bumblekast question lol (glitch Cream), since Cream is sweet & supportive & brings out the best in people, I wanted Pop to just have a total bratty sibling vibe. I like baseball and thought a team sport angle would be a great way to incorporate a chao teammate. Since she's also an opponent for Kit, I thought it'd be interesting if she shared personality traits with Surge. Like it's cool when Surge acts like a braggart, but anyone else I think he'd find much more annoying & be able to show no mercy to
Mimi Mint:
Favorite Color: Mint Green XD but any shade of green she likes
Favorite Flower: Any fruit tree blossoms (Apple, Cherry, Peach, Lemon etc.) she's a farmer girl, she loves any kind of spring flower, it's a sign of good things.
What they'd take to an island: a boat to leave. she would not have a good time after the first afternoon
Idea/Insp: she's based on my Forces oc so she's basically an idealized me :'D but I like characters that are just normal people doing their best
Opal
Favorite Color: Hot Pink, the brighter and gaudier the better
Favorite Flower: Pink Peonies, anything big and explosive looking like Dahlia or huge Roses she likes too
What they'd take to a deserted island: "Oh how fabulous, is there a resort there? A spa?....not even a hotel? ...oh. you mean deserted deserted, how quaint. No thank you, I'll pass" - Opal. (She would have some giant trendy sunglasses on her though)
Idea/Insp: If I don't make a magical girl fit somewhere in my favorite media I'll die

Not even joking, I think Tokyo mew mew new is building up a lesbian romance between Zakuro and Mint, and I’m afraid to even write that, because I’ve been burned so many times. BUT.
1. They went the effort to state that Mint and Zakuro are same age. Manga and anime have a long history of toying with lesbian vibes that get in the end denied with the “she’s the older sister that the other girl wants to emulate” card. But Tokyo Mew Mew New went the extra mile to remove that element by stating that they both are the same age.
2. instead of Zakuro being an inspiration to Mint, they both inspire each other. Zakuro gets an entire character arc where she is a teenager trying to be more mature than she is, and is impressed by Mint, which prompts her to join the team. The inspiration goes both ways in this version.
3. Mint has her own storyline and struggles. As does Zakuro. They are both treated as girls with their own shit to deal with, and they help each other to deal with it. The equal respect and help just vibes with a romantic relationship in a way that it does not with the “big sister taking care of little sister” that the original liked to defend itself with.
4. It just feels like the new adaptation threw away the aspects that were used to deny the homosexual undertones and I am a fool that lives in hope.

tokyo mew mew new thoughts
so tokyo mew mew new wrapped up its first season yesterday and i was too tired to post my thoughts then so now that i have gathered my thoughts, i have quite a bit to say.
i appreciate how tokyo mew mew new put more care into developing the mew mews, even though its shorter than the original anime. we could really see the girls grow. and one character this show really made me appreciate more was ichigo momomiya herself.
now i always did like ichigo but i felt like the original anime focused a bit too much on her. i get it, she's the main character, she's the one with the romance so of course she will have the most focus. but it felt like they wanted the spotlight to be placed on her as much as possible. but here, i feel like the girls got their time to shine. one change i appreciate was how in the original anime, it was only ichigo who delivered the final blow to the enemies. but here, the other girls get the chance to do it as well.
and on to ichigo's character development, we really see her grow. we see how she goes from being upset about being a mew mew and wanting to turn back as soon as possible to genuinely caring about the earth and doing everything in her power to protect it as a mew mew. that scene in episode 11 where she monologues about how even though she knows being a mew mew is dangerous, she doesn't regret it because she met her friends and came to appreciate life more really put into perspective just how much she's grown.
another character i've come to appreciate is mint aizawa. again, i always liked her, but i feel she was a bit mean in the original anime (though its been a while since i've seen the original anime so i'll have to rewatch it). even here she has those "proud rich girl" vibes but she's a lot more mellowed out. she genuinely cares for her friends and she'll not forgive anyone who hurts them, as seen when she threatened kisshu when he was bothering ichigo.
and lettuce midorikawa.... god i relate to her so much. her debut episode really hit home for me. her episodes are the most relatable to me. she's such a sweetheart and i'm glad this anime gave her more spotlight.
i feel like pudding and zakuro haven't had the chance to shine that much aside from their debut episodes but i'm sure season 2 will give them that chance. i'm also hoping we get a detailed zakuro backstory in season 2.
and as for the romance between ichigo and masaya, they spent a lot more time developing them. we see masaya slowly falling for ichigo. he's never had those feelings before so he's nervous around her, but he soon realizes leading to the rain scene in the last episode.
and speaking of the rain scene
i love love LOVE that they used the opening of the original anime in the lead up to that scene. it was a beautiful homage to the original anime and it also made the scene more emotional.
so anyways these are my tmmn ramblings. can't wait to see my little mew mews again in 2023.

Hadn't realized they were remaking Tokyo Mew Mew. Twas my first manga, so redesign thoughts:
Ichigo's og dress design was better, specifically the skirt. The bottom of the new skirt looks awkward and a little cluttered. This is more apparent in the below picture. Could take or leave her hair not changing colors because I don’t think any of their hair changes colors in the new show(?), and that is slightly more consistent than the 2002 anime where only Ichigo and Lettuce had hair changes, and I do agree that should be an all or nothing deal.
Tumblr media
I wish they'd done shorts or bloomers for Lettuce instead of a skirt to sort of keep more of the swimsuit vibe that the og costume had. The skirt also makes the costume look very similar to Ichigo's (Again, more apparent in the above pic) especially with how different the og costumes were from one another. I understand the choice to do a large rework of her costume despite my personal attachment to the og one. Middle school Anon hardcore went "She just like me fr." I like the choice to give her outfit two main tones instead of just one and the accent to help distinguish her costume a little more. Despite changing the antennae position from on top of her head to behind it, we still have no idea what Lettuce is supposed to be. Weird bug vibes as always. Love it.
Mint's redesign is almost perfect. Love how her wings are more detailed. The extra length of her dress and the trim on the bottom are elegant and suit her personality. I like her og hair a little more, but the dangos are cute.
Not sure why Zakuro needed a hair ribbon? It doesn't really add to the costume, and that's pretty much the only large change to her costume. Also not sure why it’s a drastically different color than literally everything else on her costume.
Big dislike for Pudding. Bring back her leotard. We stan her little acrobat costume. It fit her personality better. And we run into the "Ichigo and Lettuce's outfits are really similar now" except worse. That's the same dress as Mint except with a different neckline. No reason for the huge redesign for Pudding. Hatred. Malice even.
The new trim is fine. I especially like it on Mint's costume.
The bow ties are also fine, although the choker collars are iconic and I sort of wish they'd kept them. However, I do think with the new trim, the chokers would look busy.
New charms are eh. I get that they're more visible on the new bows, but I liked how the og charms were a good deal different than other magical girl charms. This is also part of my general ambivalence about the bow ties. The chokers were really distinctive.
Don't care for the leg ribbons. Wish they matched the neck ones to look slightly more cohesive, but surprised they kept the garter element of the costumes at all. I like the idea of the ribbons better than the garters, I just wish they weren't trimmed.

Hi! I am a big fan of the Tokyo Mew series, and I was wondering if you could do an analysis on the Mew Mew's projected elements and animals and colors, and how they all tie into their powers as magical girls?? I've always wondered if there is a certain mythology or reason behind it, but it seems like the girls' colors are mostly based on their names(Strawberry- red and pink, Lettuce-green, etc), but what about their powers?
Tumblr media
Like you said, TMM colors are much more based on their food names than on their animals. (Although, based on that one 4-panel side comic in volume 1, it seems that the colors came first, then the characters were given food names that matched.) There are two seeming exceptions:
1) Mint, but it is relatively common for mint flavored candy and gum to have blue packaging.
2) Berry, whose theme color doesn’t seem obviously related to her fruit. There are a few plants with white berries (snowberries, white beautyberry, etc.), but none that are very common in cuisine or native to Japan as far as I can tell.
Actually it seems to be the opposite (at least for the manga), with characters’ animal parts being colored as to fit with their food/theme color! Zakuro’s ears are colored much more purple than on an actual wolf, and Berry has pure white ears and tail despite neither of her animals being that color irl.
Tumblr media
I guess it’s possible she’s supposed to be based on albino plants and animals? Her Mew form does pointedly have pale blond hair and red eyes…
Anyway, as for their powers/elements…
The Mews don’t really have defined elements, with the exception of Lettuce! They more so seem to have different methods of using generic light/emotion-based attacks.
Lettuce obviously has water powers in both the manga and anime. She’s introduced telekinetically controlling a swimming pool, and her attacks are always drawn/animated as water. (Except possibly in ReTurn? It’s hard to tell if LettuSniping Shot is a jet of water.)
Tumblr media
Her power is clearly based on her animal and not at all on her theme color. She’s actually one of the few water powered magical girls who isn’t blue! I guess you could also make a connection with her name, in that Lettuce tends to have a lot of water in it (at least Iceberg does), but I’m not convinced that’s relevant.
Tumblr media
Ichigo seems to have the power of love/heart/purification, in that her attacks can purify the Chimera Anima. You could also argue something to do with harmony/friendship, as she tends to get upgrades by receiving power from the other girls. Also, maybe healing, considering she brings Masaya back to life? In a way, it seems like the Mew Mews powers are very analogous to the Mew Aqua. As for her animal…. I guess people do love cats? But again, it seems more based in genre conventions than exclusive to Ichigo. Pink is classic love, but it’s also classic magical girl leader.
Tumblr media
Berry seems to have the same powerset as Ichigo (logical, since she’s her replacement), at least at first. Her powers seem to be emotion-based, as she’s able to undo mind control with Ribbon Loveberry Check, but the other girls’ words (plus the fact that they attack her classmates first) imply this is true of all Mew Mew powers, not just hers. In ReTurn, however, she seems to explicitly have healing powers, which does seem like a natural direction to go from purification/love. Same as Ichigo for the animal connection. White does seem very associated with purity and healing (at least via association with nurses/doctors). Plus white mage.
Tumblr media
Speaking of healing, Ringo pretty much exclusively has healing powers, plus her ability to grant power to Ichigo. Very appropriate for a Mew Aqua powered character! She also has a little bit of a music theme since her mini attacks are named after solfege and involve music notes. Penguins aren’t really associated with healing or music (really, you’d expect ice), nor are red or apples (really, they’re more associated with poison!), plus Ringo was explicitly designed to be a healer so your party wouldn’t get wiped out in the RPG. So, her powerset came first, then her design…
Tumblr media
Next up is Pudding! Her element, as it were, seems to be… pudding! Sort of… It really looks more like gelatin than crème caramel. In the anime, she does raise up the ground to protect herself in her first appearance, and her attack animation does show it tunneling through the ground, so I can see why you’d make the argument her element is earth, but she never really does anything with this again. Even when it could really come in handy, like when she's trapped underground. And her attack is edible, as per the manga, so it can’t be clay or something! As for an animal connection, I guess you could say that monkeys are kind of known for eating things, I feel like this is clearly based solely on her name.
Tumblr media
Zakuro…. sort of has an element? Her whip is called a “whip of light” in the anime, and in the manga it’s literally a glowing cross-shaped whip. This plus the “Cross” and “Pure” give it definite holy/purification/light vibes. But, in my opinion, this isn’t unique to Zakuro! Mint’s arrows are also pure light/energy, Ichigo’s attack is also very glowy, and Pudding’s… puddings(?) seem to form from light/energy. It seems like rather than a unique light element, she has the normal Mew powerset but used in a way that can cut or tie up the enemies. I can’t say wolves are particularly associated with light. Really, I’d assume dark, if anything, since they tend to be cast as villains? Same for purple…
Moving on to Mint! I’ve seen it claimed that Mint’s element is sound, but she never really does anything sound-based. Sure, her weapon has “Tone” in it, and her attack has “Echo”, but Pudding’s attack has “Inferno” despite having absolutely nothing to do with fire. “Check”, “Surprise”, and “Pop” are also seemingly unrelated to the attacks they describe. As for her weapon being lyre-shaped, yeah! All of the anime-style weapons are based on instruments!
Tumblr media
As a a ballerina, she has an association with music, but she isn’t particularly useful in the fight in episode 6 vs Mary McGuire Chimera Anima, who really does attack with music. When she fights the ballerina bird Chimera Anima in episode 9, she doesn’t use music, or even really dancing! She defeats it with the power of Kicking Really Hard. And she does hear the Mew Aqua swan calling for help, but that’s just an extension of the generic “can talk to animals closely related to their infused genes” power that Ichigo and Zakuro also demonstrate.
Tumblr media
Really, it seems like her power is just “arrow”. Like Zakuro, she doesn’t have an element; she’s just the one who’s able to aim the best from a distance. I guess when Lettuce steals her thunder in ReTurn, she's forced to upgrade to “a whole bunch of arrows all at once” and hit everything.
All Mew Mews basically have light and emotion based powers that they use slightly differently, with the exception of Lettuce, who seems to actually just generate water out of nowhere. But her powers are obviously connected to her emotions still (see how they manifest when she first awakens them). Them all having the same base power is supported by the way the manga will often not depict each attack individually, instead having each girl say her attack name and then showing the Chimera Anima exploding in a collective burst of light.
In short, rather than individual elements, I think it’s more like:
Ichigo: big finishing move
Mint: long range precision attack
Lettuce: knocking back the enemy? area of effect? (water)
Pudding: holding the enemy in place
Zakuro: cutting through small fry or holding the enemy in place
Berry: big finishing move, healing
Ringo: healing (music)
So, none of their character traits (color, animal, power) are that related? There’s some stuff that seems linked, but overall it seems like they’re most informed by genre tropes. (Also, a lot of the details of their powers were hammered out by the anime.)

I prefer making OCs for original projects rather than fan OCs so Mew Cherry is just vibes and aesthetics! All that I’ve got for her personality-wise she’d be similar to Mew Mint but less snobby and more grumpy?? But I love designing Mew Mews so I am considering making a team for Mew Cherry, partially based on my old TMM OCs from when I was a child. I don’t know if this will ever materialise as all my brain power goes into my original story projects but I’m ruminating on it and making pin boards!

tokyo mew mew commentary 💖
Tumblr media
For the first time, I am reading a manga and its corresponding anime ( spoiler : it’s Tokyo Mew Mew ) side-by-side, and I think it’s so interesting to see the differences between the two, especially seeing which what scenes are removed and which ones are in turn added. Of course, anime makes way for more character development by adding small scenes and general animation, voice acting, etc., I am always really annoyed by the fact that anime series always have countless filler episodes and then remove important or simply good scenes / plot points.
(( SPOILERS !!! Tokyo Mew Mew and Cardcaptor Sakura ))
For example, in the very beginning of the Tokyo Mew Mew manga, the entire main cast of Mew Mews are gathered in the same place by chance. Different situations brought each one of them there, and, without as much as knowing each other’s names, they are thrown into a conflict. It’s at this time that they are all accidentally injected with the Red Data Animal DNA. Now, while this does definitely give the sense that we are hastily being thrown into the plot of the story, it still gives off a vibe of unity, fate, destiny ( for lack of better words ), and.... common sense. It also deeply roots each of the characters’ major personality traits and, because they are introduced so early on, allows room to  develop their characters before even being formally introduced.
There much of an opportunity for them to be inconsistent, to our luck ( ? ), because neither of these two details, the gathering of the protagonists or the accidental injection, even occur in the anime. Instead, Shirogane and Ryō scout Ichigo and decide she’s the best candidate to be injected with the Red Data Animal DNA.
( Side note :  there actually is a plot hole regarding this however. This implies that all of the other Mew Mews were also chosen to be injected with the Red Data Animal DNA, and they still force Ichigo to go look for them )
Tumblr media
(( Ichigo encounters the upper class ))
My favourite, or rather least favourite, example of this is probably the entire ending of the original Cardcaptor Sakura series. I can’t even tell you how many random filler episodes there were, but they managed to break down the entir ending ( Sakura admitting her feelings for Xiaolang and him returning to China ) down to like idk an episode and a half ??? and only included a fraction of the actual content from the manga while the manga dedicated at least a whole volume to it. I might be exaggerating a little, but really.... I didn’t go through the entire series like that just for them to butcher the ending
Anyways !!! I’ve also noticed that, in the Tokyo Mew Mew anime, the majority of the suggestive / sexual content ( Ichigo stalking Mint , Shirogane revealing Ichigo’s marking , and More! ) and honestly... I am a fan of this decision. Part of me was disappointed because, as an adult, I found all of that entertaining as all hell, but the truth it that these are all underaged characters aimed at an underage audience and there is literally no reason for them to be exploited like this or even, hypothetically, this sexually aware at that age.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m not yet finished with either the manga or the anime so ! maybe expect more ???

I'm so mad right now. So, Tokyo Mew Mew was the first anime I ever watched (not counting Love Live since as an 8 year old I barely got through one episode before I got bored and turned it off) and I'm rewatching it because I never finished it when I first watched it (because I was watching the dub and I couldn't find the rest of the episodes so now I'm rewatching it with subs). I noticed that I really hate the blue knight dude. I haven't finished the series obviously but so far I think he's unnecessary. I'm on episode 32. It's the one where Mint invites all the Mew Mews to a fancy tea party and there's this one girl who thinks she's Mint's rival there. I was so happy with that episode until that dude showed up. I HATE him. I was hoping one of the other Mew Mews would save Ichigo from that blast (because team bonding) but THIS DUDE ALWAYS SHOWS UP. I WANT TEAM BONDING GOD DAMN IT, STOP MESSING IT UPPP. (Also I got gay vibes from Mint and Kanna but that might just be me)
