Scotland Yard could be called in to investigate an alleged breach of the Princess of Wales’s private medical data.
The world-renowned London Clinic in Marylebone where the Princess of Wales underwent abdominal surgery in January, launched an investigation amid allegations staff attempted to access her private medical records.
After The Mirror’s world exclusive was picked up around the world this week, sources have said tonight that “up to three people” could be involved in the alleged accessing of Catherine’s medical records.
In a further bombshell, it can be revealed that the alleged breach took place after the future queen was discharged from hospital on January 29, as social media exploded with outlandish and hurtful conspiracy theories relating to her surgery.
Sources said the criminal investigation, described as “unprecedented” and now being run by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), could run alongside an additional probe by the Metropolitan Police.
Accessing someone’s medical records without cause or consent can be a criminal offence.
If the ICO investigates and finds evidence that medical records were accessed illegally, it can take action, including prosecuting and fining the person responsible in court.
The development came amid a new statement from the CEO of the The London Clinic, who said:
“There is no place at our hospital for those who intentionally breach the trust of any of our patients or colleagues.”
A source said:
“This is such a unique case that a police investigation could run alongside one by the Information Commissioner's Office.
The IOC will deal with anything as a criminal matter, which could end up in a Magistrate’s Court, but if there were further claims of wrongdoing such as a conspiracy to distribute illegally accessed information, then that could be a matter for the police.”
Scotland Yard has also been urged to launch an immediate investigation, alongside the IOC probe, over fears of a potential royal blackmail plot.
Dai Davies, the former chief superintendent and head of the royal protection unit, said:
“Anyone accused of this most serious breach of trust should be interviewed under caution at the earliest opportunity.
The implications for the royal family are far and wide, and there must be a full probe by Scotland Yard to determine if any further crimes have been committed.”
The Met Police said it had not yet received a referral, but Health Minister Maria Caulfield said today that she understood “police have been asked to look at it.”
Speaking to Sky News, she said it was "pretty serious stuff to be accessing notes that you don't have permission to."
She added:
"I say this as someone who's still on the nursing register, that the rules are very, very clear for all patients.
That unless you're looking after that patient, or they've given you their consent, you should not be looking at patients' notes.
So there are rules in place and the Information Commissioner can levy fines, that can be prosecutions, your regulator.
So as a nurse, my regulator would be the NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council), can take enforcement action….and can strike you off the register if the breach is serious enough.
So there are particularly hefty implications if you are looking at notes for medical records that you should not be looking at."
Asked if the police should look into the matter, she said: "My understanding is that police have been asked to look at it - whether they take action is a matter for them.”
Fears that the King’s private medical information had also been compromised were dismissed tonight, after Charles spent three nights at the hospital during the same period as the Princess of Wales after undergoing an operation for an enlarged prostate.
Sources confirmed bosses at the hospital had informed Buckingham Palace that the alleged breach being probed did not involve the monarch.
Charles and Catherine were discharged separately just hours apart on January 29.
The King was subsequently diagnosed with “a form of cancer,” announced by Buckingham Palace on February 5.
Senior bosses at the hospital notified the IOC within 72 hours of the alleged breach of Kate’s records, in accordance with the watchdog’s guidelines.
Despite global speculation over the nature of the princess’s surgery, which has sparked wild conspiracy theories across social media and international news outlets, Kensington Palace has gone to great lengths to protect her privacy.
The palace said when Catherine was admitted that she would spend two weeks in hospital and not return to royal duties until after Easter as she continued her recovery at home.
Sources suggested the princess may decide to join the royal family on a scheduled walk to church on Easter Sunday, but no decision had yet been taken.
As the crisis intensified today following The Mirror’s revelations, Al Russell, the CEO at The London Clinic, added:
“Everyone at The London Clinic is acutely aware of our individual, professional, ethical and legal duties with regards to patient confidentiality.
We take enormous pride in the outstanding care and discretion we aim to deliver for all our patients that put their trust in us every day.
We have systems in place to monitor management of patient information and, in the case of any breach, all appropriate investigatory, regulatory and disciplinary steps will be taken.”
The General Medical Council (GMC), which regulates doctors, also said patients must have confidence that their personal information is protected "at all times."
A spokesman for the Prime Minister said:
“Clearly there are strict rules on patient data that must be followed. I think we all want to get behind the Princess of Wales and Prince of Wales and we wish her the speediest of recoveries.”

The redcoats are coming!
I’m not sure how the Commissioner of the London Metropolitan Police can extradite US Citizens for breaking a UK law while the “Perpetrators” committed the “Crime” on US soil. It isn’t our law. However, if their law applies here then our Constitution must apply there. I am looking forward to our cousins exercising their 2ND Amendment rights. :)

“So much for Britain sliding into civil war, eh, Mr Musk? Pretty much a whole nation was braced yesterday evening for the worst civil disorder in a decade or more. Fair to say, too, that some were also hoping, for their own malign reasons, for chaos, mayhem, and even death.
But it did not turn out like that, or anything like it. In fact, it was a rout for the far right in the best possible way – a peaceful one where they were overwhelmed by folk who despise what they stand for, as much as their incoherent claims make any sense at all.
Britain really is not what we saw over the last week, and the reasonable, tolerant, democratically-minded centre held.
The fascists were, frankly, humiliated, often a handful marooned in a windswept roundabout or in a corner of a High Street, surrounded by their fellow Britons demonstrating that “we are many, you are few”. Indeed they are, and a criminal few as well. The Metropolitan Police commissioner Mark Rowley says that 70 per cent of those arrested have criminal records.
In his words: “They are not your average man on the street. They are thugs and criminals, they are not patriots or protesters and they are being held to account.”
It was a bad night for the likes of Tommy Robinson and Elon Musk.
The far right have emerged from these events weaker, not stronger, their cause exposed for the nihilism it is.”

by Lorin Bell-Cross
She recalled the incident where Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) Chief Executive Gideon Falter, who was wearing a kippah, was threatened with arrest and an officer said that his “openly Jewish” presence might cause a reaction from pro-Palestine demonstrators.
“If they weren't hateful, why was a Jewish person unable to cross the road in front of them?”, she asked. The Metropolitan Police later apologised to Falter for use of the phrase “openly Jewish”.
Braverman slammed the Metropolitan Police and commissioner Sir Mark Rowley for what she described as their “wholesale strategic failure” in dealing with the marches. She added that, “we've got a situation where extremism is a real feature of British life today”.
She was equally scathing about Sir Keir Starmer, describing him as “weak”. She said: “He has not offered a very clear plan on how to deal with some of the challenges that we're facing as a country. Instead, he has retreated to the mealy-mouthed equivocation and ambivalence that I'm afraid too many politicians are guilty of these days.”

In New York City, there are concerns about the water supply because all of the city’s reservoirs are in the drought zone, which encompasses the southeastern quarter of the state. “We need six inches of rain to recover what we are missing,” Rohit Aggarwala, the city’s environmental protection commissioner, said this week. Repairs being made to one of the aqueducts that connects to the Catskills region, the source of most of the city’s drinking water, mean that access to four major reservoirs has been cut off until the spring. A half-inch of rain was expected in the New York metropolitan region on Sunday, but that amount would do little to end drought conditions, said Brian Ciemnecki, a Weather Service meteorologist.
The city has been under a drought watch since Nov. 2. New Yorkers are not required to conserve water under a drought watch, but they are urged to, Mr. Aggarwala said. New York City’s last drought watch was more than 20 years ago.

Seoul Police Identify 52 Suspects in 'Deepfake' Sex Crime Cases... 79% Are Teenagers
2024-09-09
The Seoul police, having formed a "Task Force for Focused Response to Deepfake Sex Crimes," announced that they have identified 52 suspects in their crackdown on illegal deepfake sexual content. They are also conducting a pre-investigation into the corporation and representative of Telegram for allegedly aiding and abetting related sex crimes.
At a regular press briefing on the 9th, Kim Bong-sik, the commissioner of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, stated, "As of September 6th, we are investigating 101 cases related to deepfake sex crimes. We have identified 52 suspects so far." Among the 52 identified suspects, 39 (79%) were teenagers and 11 (21%) were in their 20s. Commissioner Kim noted, "In cooperation with the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, we are educating students through resource officers (SPOs) to raise awareness that deepfake sex crimes are serious offenses."
Additionally, the police are conducting a pre-investigation into Telegram's corporation and representative on charges of aiding and abetting the distribution of sex crime videos (violations of the Youth Protection Act and the Sexual Violence Punishment Act). A police official commented, "We are currently reviewing the facts and legal issues regarding Telegram's involvement. We are determined to investigate and are collecting cases of criminal punishment against Telegram users and examples from abroad."
When asked whether domestic criminal procedures against Telegram would be feasible even if the company were indicted, Commissioner Kim responded, "If the charges and facts of the crime are established, an arrest warrant can be issued, and through that, an Interpol warrant is possible. We can also consider cooperating with overseas investigative authorities."

"Violence against women a 'national emergency' in England and Wales, police say (Vikram Dodd, The Guardian, July 23 2024)
"Two million women are estimated to be victims of violence perpetrated by men each year in an epidemic so serious it amounts to a “national emergency”, police chiefs have warned.
Crimes including stalking, harassment, sexual assault and domestic violence affect one in 12 women in England and Wales, with the number of recorded offences growing by 37% in the past five years and the perpetrators getting younger. (…)
Louisa Rolfe, the national lead for domestic abuse and an assistant commissioner in the Metropolitan police, said the real figure for victims was probably even higher as many offences were not reported.
“I think it is more, more like 4 million,” she said.
Part of the increase was being driven by extreme material on the internet, police said.
Rolfe said there had been an increase in non-fatal strangulation among younger people, with men believing it was part of a normal sexual relationship, without women’s consent, which she described as “really frightening”.
She added: “All the academic research will tell you that the difference between non-fatal strangulation and fatal strangulation is millibars of pressure.”
Blyth said the police counter-terrorism command and those tackling VAWG were discussing the influence of influencers and how to counter it.
“We know that some of this is also linked to radicalisation of young people online … we know the influencers, Andrew Tate. The element of influencing, of particularly boys, is quite terrifying,” she said.
“Misogyny is inherent in some of the ways of working that are behind these crime types, behind boys growing up and their use of violence. This is why the online threat is so significant for us.”
Other data shows the fastest-growing groups of domestic abuse offenders and victims of domestic abuse are those aged 16 to 19. (…)
Police now say VAWG should be treated as seriously as terrorism."

IHRC writes to UN over UK crackdown on pro-Palestine activists
This week, ten counterterrorism police officers raided the London home of the prominent journalist Asa Winstanley, who eventually was neither arrested nor charged with any offence, but his electronic devices were confiscated by the police. According to a letter addressed to Winstanley from “Counter Terror Command”, he resulted in being investigated for offences under the Terrorism Act connected to his social media posts. This was carried out as part of an ongoing investigation into suspected terrorism offences contrary to section 12 of the Terrorism Act (TACT), 2000 (support of a proscribed organization) and sections 1 and 2, TACT 2006 (dissemination of terrorist documents). It said the raid had been conducted as part of an operation codenamed “Operation Incessantness”.
[...]
Last month, the general secretaries of the UK’s National Union of Journalists and the International Federation of Journalists wrote to Metropolitan Police Assistance Commissioner Matt Jukes, the head of Counter Terrorism Policing in the UK, to raise concerns about the use of counter-terrorism powers against journalists. Accordingly, Michelle Stanistreet, NUJ general secretary, and Anthony Bellanger, IFJ general secretary, said that the use of counter-terrorism powers against journalists would have a “chilling effect” on journalists in the UK. IHRC believes that governments’ strategy of quelling civil dissent, arresting and/or charging pro-Palestine advocates has the twofold objective of drawing a line for freedom of expression that is inconsistent with international law, and seeking to hide the ongoing slaughter in Gaza and now Lebanon from public view so that it can continue apace and unopposed.

great info on the mayors / political leaders of New York - on the anti side, how about the absolute worst and most destructive , regressive, or otherwise harmful in its history?
This one is mostly covered by my first post about NYC mayors, where I discussed the mayors from Lindsay to the present. However, I can talk about earlier mayors, even though most of them were bland non-entities. One major exception to this rule was Fernando Wood.
If there was one consistent theme of Wood's career - other than fraud (Wood stole from his bank and his own brother-in-law) and corruption - it was racism and violence.
From the very beginning of Wood's political career, he distinguished himself as the most pro-slavery man in New York Democratic politics, seeking the patronage of figures like John C. Calhoun and James Buchanan. When he shifted from Congress to mayoral politics, Wood went back and forth on what variety of pro-slavery politics he preferred (variously backing Douglas' popular sovereignty position and Buchanan's anti-Douglas position), but was a consistent enemy of John Van Buren's Free Soil Democrats, "Black Republicans," and abolitionism as a concept. Nevertheless, he managed to win election in 1854 with a bare third of the total vote.
Unlike more pliable Tammany mayors, Wood believed in "one-man rule" rather than collective pursuit of power, particularly when it came to direct mayoral control of the police force. While claiming to stand for home rule, democratic accountability, and efficiency, in reality Fernando sought to remove any commissioners on the police board who stood between him and turning the Municipal Police into his personal army. In the 1856 election, Wood gave the police the day off so that the Dead Rabbits gang could engage in street violence, physical intimidation of voters and poll workers, and theft of ballot boxes. Evidently Wood needed the help, because he won with a tiny plurality of the vote and ran well behind the Democratic ticket.
Wood managed to skate from any indictment from Election Day violence, but he had gone too far politically. Tammany broke with Wood, barring him from the building and promoting his political opponents to Federal patronage positions. The Republican-controlled state legislature enacted a new Municipal Charter that ordered a new election for 1857 and transferred control over public works to state commissioners appointed by the governor, and then a Metropolitan Police Act that abolished Wood's Municipal Police and replaced them with a new force under state commissioners.
Wood refused to accept the Metropolitan Police Act or the Municipal Charter as law, ordered his Municipal Police to physically remove state commissioners from government buildings, and when the new Metropolitan Police attempted to arrest him for selling the office of Street Commissioner for $50,000, Wood mobilized the Municipal Police against the "Black Republicans," leading to the "Great Police Riot" in which the two police forces met in open combat on the steps of City Hall. 53 people were injured, the state militia had to be called out to disperse the Municipal Police, and Wood was arrested (and then promptly released by a friendly judge).
New York City's gangs, with Wood's allies the Dead Rabbits very much in the lead, realized that with the city's two police forces at war (Wood had directed the Municipal Police to stop the Metropolitan Police from carrying out arrests, leading to frequent skirmishes), there was no state monopoly on violence to restrain them.
Amid a rising crime wave, the Dead Rabbits Riot broke out on July 4th - in which the Five Points gangs under the leadership of the Dead Rabbits invaded the Bowery and went to war with both the Bowery gangs and the Metropolitan Police. At its height, the riot involved 800-1,000 armed men and women who responded to police charges by building barrricades. Once again, the state militia had to be called out to quell the violence (at least 8 people killed and about 100 injured), although fighting would continue for another week. Ultimately, the courts ruled against Wood and the Municipal Police were disbanded.
In the election that year, Wood ran on a pro-slavery platform that praised the Dred Scott decision and Buchanan's pro-slavery policy in Bleeding Kansas, while attacking Republican efforts to expand voting rights to black New Yorkers. This race-baiting failed to distract voters from the violence and corruption of the Wood Administration, to say nothing of the Panic of 1857 which had sent unemployment in the city skyrocketing. To get rid of Wood, Tammany formed a fusion ticket with the Republicans and Know-Nothings that narrowly defeated the incumbent mayor.
Learning nothing from his defeat, Wood blamed the loss on a shadowy cabal of "Black Republicans" who had supposedly infiltrated Tammany Hall and formed his own rival Democratic machine out of Mozart Hall. In 1859, Wood once again used armed violence, this time to try to seize control of the State Democratic Convention from Tammany delegates. When this didn't work, Wood once again turned to racism in his campaign to get back into the mayoralty, running on a pro-slavery, anti-John Brown, and anti-abolition platform. He just barely managed to pull out another tiny plurality victory with only 38% of the total vote.
In his next term, Wood crossed the line from mere bigotry to open treason, calling for New York City to secede from both New York state and the United States (both controlled by "Black Republican" abolitionists, according to Wood) so that it could trade freely with the Confederacy. In 1861, Wood came in third place for re-election, finishing only a thousand votes behind both the Republican and the Tammany Democrat.
Despite (or arguably because of) his vocal pro-Confederacy stance and his supporters having caused the 1863 Draft Riots, Wood became the leader of the so-called "Peace" Democratic faction against the War Democrats. Lest you think that Wood was motivated by his abbhorence of war, Wood made the reasons for his opposition clear when he pushed for constitutional amendments to protect slavery, attacked War Democrats as "a white man's face on the body of a negro," and led the Congressional opposition to the passage of the 13th Amendment. In 1868, Wood was censured by Congress for his verbal attacks on the Reconstruction Acts. This censure accomplished nothing, and Wood continued his Congressional career unabated, which culminated in becoming Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee following the end of Reconstruction.
Wood had the reverse Midas touch of turning everything he touched to shit, such that even the few good things he supported - like home rule for New York City and public works jobs for the unemployed - became tainted by association with his violence and corruption. As far as I'm concerned, they should have done him like they did Vallandigham.
Compared to Wood, the faults of every other NYC mayor seem like the most minor of venal sins.
"Gentleman" Jimmy Walker was corrupt as fuck - supporting his lavish lifestyle by taking bribes from anyone with a pulse, selling the services of the NYPD to the mob, getting in bed with Arnold Rothstein, and perhaps having been connected to the murder of a whistleblower on police corruption and the disappearance of a New York Supreme Court judge - but he was also part of the progressive wing of Tammany Hall and a talented administrator (albeit one who only worked from 3-5 so as not to interfere with his more important time with showgirls, nightclubs, speakeasies, and boxing matches). He supported social welfare policies, opposed the KKK, built municipal waterworks and subway lines (albeit through corrupt contracts), and created the Sanitation and Hospitals Departments.
Similarly, William O'Dwyer was a typical Tammany politician who oversaw a massive police corruption scandal in Brooklyn, and ultimately had to flee to Mexico to avoid investigations from the Justice Department and the Brooklyn DA into his ties with organized crime, but he was in most other respects a typical if unremarkable mid-century NYC Mayor.
Shouldn't have raised the subway fare to ten cents, tho.

A judge on Tuesday sentenced Anjem Choudary, one of the UK's most recognised radical Islamist preachers, to life jail after he was found guilty of directing a banned "terrorist organisation".
Sentencing Choudary at Woolwich Crown Court in London to a minimum term of 28 years, judge Mark Wall told the 57-year-old former lawyer that he was "front and centre in running a terrorist organisation".
The prosecution followed a joint investigation by London's Metropolitan Police, the New York Police Department (NYPD) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
He will serve more than 26 years behind bars in total due to the time he has already spent in custody, meaning he will not be released before the age of 85, Wall said.
Explaining why he had ordered the lengthy term, the judge added that Choudary had "encouraged young men into radical activity".
Long in the authorities' sights, Choudary has already spent time in jail for supporting the jihadist Islamic State group.
His return to prison comes after a jury last week convicted him of being the "caretaker" leader of Al-Muhajiroun (ALM), which was proscribed in the UK in 2010.
The group was founded in 1996 by London-based Syrian-born cleric Omar Bakri Muhammad with the goal of establishing an Islamic caliphate in the UK.
Its members have been implicated in a number of attacks, including the murder of British soldier Lee Rigby in 2013, and attacks on London Bridge in 2017 and 2019.
- 'Important moment' -
Despite claims it had been disbanded, prosecutors said Al-Muhajiroun still exists under different names, including the New York-based Islamic Thinkers Society.
US law enforcement officers infiltrated the group and attended online lectures it hosted with Choudary in 2022 and 2023, sparking police probes in Britain and Canada.
"There are individuals that have conducted terrorist attacks or travelled for terrorist purposes as a result of Anjem Choudary's radicalising impact upon them," Dominic Murphy, of London's Metropolitan Police, said after the conviction.
Rebecca Weiner, deputy commissioner of the New York Police Department, told reporters Choudary's conviction was "historic" and described him as a "shameless, prolific radicaliser".
"It is usually the foot soldiers, the individuals who are brought into the network who go on to commit the attacks who are brought to justice," she said.
"It's rarely the leader, which is what makes this a particularly important moment."
Choudary, the son of a market trader, became a familiar media figure after staging demonstrations in front of UK mosques, embassies and police stations in the early 2000s.
His ultimate goal, he said, was to fly the flag of Islam above 10 Downing Street, the prime minister's residence.
He was jailed for five and a half years in 2016 for encouraging support for the Islamic State group, and was released early from prison in 2018.
Choudary's co-defendant Khaled Hussein, 29, from Edmonton, Canada, was also convicted of membership of ALM and was sentenced to five years in prison on Tuesday.

After revealing he was being blackmailed on grindr, conservative MP William Wragg has resigned as Vice-Chairman of the 1922 Committee (the Tory cabal that oversees leadership contests and votes of no-confidence), but, so far, has yet to resign or have the whip removed.
He also (checks notes) told MPs in 2022 that if they were being blackmailed, they should report this to the Speaker of the House of Commons and the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police.
Help us, Larry. You're our only hope.
