i got an ask asserting that amy sequenzia was fraudulently being manipulated by her carer and thus can't be credited for her contributions to autistic advocacy, which include significant work against the idea that nonverbal people should be pitied or presumed not to have thoughts.

i didn't want to let this sit in my askbox without a response.

you should always ask yourself what someone's goal is when they tell you that a prominent nonverbal activist—one whose entire body of work is about presuming competence and advocating for nonverbal people's agency and dignity—is in some way fraudulent.

you could also ask yourself: if it's true that this autistic person's caregivers are deliberately manipulating their words (or, as in related conspiracy theorizing I've seen about other autistic activists: if it's true that this person is faking being nonverbal...), who would be materially benefitting from this very effortful fraud, and what would be the goal of orchestrating such a complex fraud? if there's no clear benefit or goal to this kind of fraud, this should give you serious pause.

conspiracism about prominent nonverbal autistic people being fraudulent very frequently occurs alongside a reluctance to believe that a nonverbal person who uses communication supports can genuinely have and communicate thoughts, and doubt that such a nonverbal person could ever have thoughts as complex as a verbal person's.

ask yourself: what is the goal of asserting that a prominent nonverbal activist's words are not their own and that they've been manipulated by their caregivers?

is it to draw attention to legitimate harm done to the nonverbal person by their caregivers?

is it drawing attention to harm done directly to nonverbal people by the activist's work?

or is the assertion meaning to discredit the idea of presuming competence at all in nonverbal people who need assistance communicating?

be wary of people who wear their skepticism as a badge of honor yet are committed to the idea that some prominent nonverbal autistic activist is either faking or can't possibly be responsible for their own words, especially if the self-styled skeptic shows no interest in figuring out ways to protect nonverbal people from harm in a way that presumes that they indeed have thoughts.

amy sequenzia is not the first nonverbal autistic person who's been the subject of conspiracy theorizing suggesting that her caregivers are using her as a puppet and that her entire body of work consists of their words and not hers. she will not be the last nonverbal person whose communication is questioned. but we can always critically examine these kinds of claims to see if they come from a place of genuine value for nonverbal people's agency and safety.

Bullies thought it would be especially fun to call me the D slur and another name that they thought was a masculinized version of my deadname. In addition to cringing whenever I hear my deadname (even when it's someone else's name), I also cringe at the other name I was called.

Yeeeeep. This is why one of my dealbreakers for dating is having any variation on my deadname. Someone could literally be my Dream Girlfriend in every imaginable way but with a name like that? Nope. 

And it’d be one thing if it were a rare name instead of one of the most common names of all for American AFAB millennials.

I will because I have a history. I am 39 its not like I am 22. Its always been this way. No one will touch me with a 10 foot pole if it involves anything more then minimum wage work. It not matter the degrees I have or my skills or anything else. Employers treat me like I have Leprosy.

you are allowed to hate aspects of being autistic, to hate being autistic, to feel like your autism is a negative thing. but you don't get to argue that it's okay for a non-autistic person to force a hypothetical cure on a nonverbal autistic person as if that autistic person will relate to their autism the way you relate to yours.

I want a cure for myself, that’s it. Y’all can feel happy, but I’m 86% sure that my suffering would be lessened quite considerably if I were cured. That’s my opinion.

Hi! You mentioned in your about that you're getting a PhD in being a tumblrina? That sounds really cool and I'd love to talk about it!! Academia wasn't for me, but something about the academic approach to things suits my mindset well, and it's not something I've been able to use lately.

I am indeed! I’ll be defending my tumblrina dissertation in May or June (then it’ll be dr. Tumblrina to you) and always happy to talk about what I’m working on!

The short version is that I’m interested in the epistemic networks that have formed among trans(/)Mad users on here, tracing back to the rise of self-diagnostic/ gender self-determination efforts in the early 2010s (tucutes and the like) and both the preceding / concurrent efforts elsewhere online and the continued impact of this knowledge work today and beyond.

Basically what I am reading for are the speculative & care-full practices not exclusive to the internet but perhaps more local here: ways we can materialize our identities outside “real worlds” hostile to our existence as trans Mad ppl, ways we traverse gender and sanity and even species / singlet subjectivity, and ways the collective pedagogical practices of digital networks help to maintain and reproduce these spaces we rely on for survival and intimacy and personal edification.

To think about this, I’ve developed the concept of transMadness, which sits alongside portmanteaus like queercrip ( @rebirthgarments ) and neuroqueer to describe not only the intersection of discrete experiences but in this case lets us think about how trans”ness” Maddens gender + Madness facilitates and gives us language for reality-crossing very amenable to trans study.

I have a bunch of publications and you can find the peer reviewed ones here. They’re not all about tumblr but many are.

Lastly, I want to mention a few colleagues I cite in the dissertation that may be reading this! @sadhoc @materialisnt @campgender @metapianycist @yesthattoo @floral-ashes.

i have to get a referral from my GP and he told me there were no local places and to just consider myself autistic
