notes / thoughts on Terzo's characterization (Terzo is so disappointed and depressed and i love him)
Tumblr media
a few weeks ago i saw this post from slavghoul which has snippets of TF describing the Papas. it includes this quote:
“He represents this frustrated old guy who hates everyone, especially himself. But despite his wounds and his darkness, he has a sense of humour and is endearing, like most of my heroes. The late actor Christopher Lee was an inspiration to me. In many ways, he is Papa.” (Metallian 7/2015)
i thought this quote was really interesting because i'd never seen anyone talking about that side of Terzo before. Terzo hating "everyone, especially himself" felt at odds with the charming personality he typically displayed. i wanted to know how that developed and where his "wounds and darkness" came from. so i did some digging for quotes on Terzo's history and characterization. here are my notes + thoughts:
something that came up again and again in my research is that he is actually quite antisocial when he's not performing. it seems like he didn't want people to know anything about him past his stage persona.
TOUR MANAGER: No one in the crew really gets to see or speak to Papa, ever. Only Anna and myself have access. He is not in the building and then he'll just be there, just for show time. The only thing you really need to know about Papa is what you see of him on stage. Ghost - The Devil's Hands (Documentary) (2017)
he almost never interacted with any of the nameless ghouls or the tour crew. in fact, he really went out of his way to avoid them. he traveled separately, would appear right before the start of a show, and then he would disappear as soon as it ended. in "The Devil's Hands", it showed they sometimes had trouble locating him when he was needed.
With this new era, can you introduce Papa Emeritus III? NAMELESS GHOUL: I don't know him very well yet. We haven't really done our mileage with him, so I am sure that we will find out. But he seems nice. He seems okay. Obviously, he's very close relatives with Papa number two, who was a little bit of a hmm. I'm sure that he isn't like, completely different, but we'll find out. He's a bit of a recluse, and he sort of travels on his own. And he sort of appears when we're due onstage and then he disappears when we're offstage. So yeah, I guess we have a little bit of a social disconnect there, but I don't see a big problem with that. I mean he seems to be doing well on his own, and I don't know if he has a little harem somewhere that occupies his time offstage, I guess. I'm assuming that. Loud TV (July 2015)
INTERVIEWER: How has it been working with the third Papa? How is he fitting into the group? NAMELESS GHOUL: We like him, actually. He seems to be quite nice. Obviously, we haven't really done our "miles" with him yet, so we don't know him that well. And he doesn't travel with us- he sort of goes separately everywhere, and he appears just before the show and then he just disappears. So we haven't really had the time to sort of fully get to know him. But overall, he seems quite a joyful chap. Metal Injection (September 2015)
predictably, his bandmates did not know him very well. but they always remarked that they liked him and that he seemed like a nice, chill guy. (they also assumed he had a harem that he spent time with when he wasn't performing, which is probably not true, considering how much effort he put into avoiding people whenever possible.)
NAMELESS GHOUL: We don't really socialize with Papa, so… But he seems nice! But he's very occupied in his harem. [...] He's a little bit cooler. He seems to be the nicer of the two brothers --I don't know if there are two-- but he seems to have, I don't know, a kinder mother, probably, or something that makes him slightly.. INTERVIEWER: A little different. NAMELESS GHOUL: Yeah, he's a little bit different. AMBY (October 2015)
i don't think his charming, pleasant demeanor was just an act, though. i think it did come from a genuine part of himself... he wasn't always an antisocial recluse.
before he became Papa, he was a cardinal in Krakow, Poland. Bishop Necropolitus Cracoviensis (the character representing Zbigniew Bielak, the artist who does the album art for Ghost) characterized younger Terzo as having enthusiasm in all his endeavors. he was always a very devoted member of the clergy who had big dreams of progress and modernization for the Ministry and the world. he had a strong interest in Futurist art and philosophy.
Bp. Necropolitus Cracoviensis remembers: "...our relationship goes a long way back to the times before his papacy, that is when he was still a cardinal in my hometown, in Cracovia...(...) Although we had our share of juvenile recklessness - be it indulging his beloved cream pies - allegedly verging on six hundred sixty six portions a year but that must be a rumor I believe, or wild parties at the attic of seminary school (laughs) - even in his formative years, he remained a focused man of vision, looking far into the future, always addressing his people's needs and longings to keep our church together in those turbulent, rapidly changing times (...) there were so many temptations to syndicate among our good people (...) (...) We would sit down to studying exciting Futurist manifestos, sketched the blueprints of utopian metropoles, spiked with shiny skyscrapers stabbing at the heavens belly... Wantonly swollen zeppelins would to carry our gospel of indulgence to the farthest corners of the globe to summon and enslave. (...) Forged in nostalgia of steam and fire, this brave new world of ambition, vice, lust and greed - all so inherent to the enlightened modernity, was always with him through all these years. And it is now - when our church continues to grow stronger and wealthier under wise reign of Papa Emeritus III - that these visions may finally be witnessed and embraced in the preachings of 'Meliora' - his most contemporary and humane Encyclical." (https://www.facebook.com/thebandghost/posts/994031900615606)
those core values of ambition, vice, lust, and greed stayed with him when he became Papa. though he had a revolutionary spirit, he's actually described as "less rebellious" in Metal Myths. Terzo took his job as Papa very seriously, and he cared about being successful and achieving his goals. while he and Secondo certainly had vice, lust, and greed in common, it was Terzo's ambition that truly set him apart.
"It felt like the goal was to take Papa II's sense of modernity and remove the recklessness." Metal Myths: Ghost Pt. 2 (April 2022)
How would you describe the personality of Papa Emeritus III compared to his predecessors? NAMELESS GHOUL: "First of all, Papa Emeritus III is an entertainer! He loves projectors, he loves the public, and he loves success. The first Papa Emeritus was someone very rigid, very strict, and very solemn. A real son of a bitch! (laughs) To be honest, we don’t miss him at all! Papa Emeritus II was a pervert a little bit sadistic, and, in hindsight, I think he wasn’t very at ease on stage. He wasn’t a showman, unlike Papa Emeritus III! Him, he’s the guide we missed to rise up the quality of our shows, to reach the step above and communicate with our fans." (MyRock #44 (2017) translated from French by @ a-wandering-ghoulette)
unfortunately, his ambition eventually led him to become disillusioned and depressed.
Terzo looked forward to becoming Papa. he worked so hard for it his whole life, only to be confronted with the realization that his time as Papa --and therefore his achievements-- would be limited.
he was a nice guy, but he was also was egotistical. he was a showman and an intellectual, and he thought very highly of himself.
NAMELESS GHOUL: He's a little bit more chill. But obviously, all the Papas are definitely pompous assholes. INTERVIEWER: That's part of the job. SPECIAL GHOUL: That's one of the criterias, the prerequisites, that you have to be this sort of flamboyant diva, know-all, show-off. Metal Injection (September 2015)
his self-hatred came from his inability to be the person he wanted to be. it's not that he felt like he couldn't measure up, it's that he felt like he wasn't allowed to express his full potential. Terzo's mindset was "i know i'm good enough. and i could prove it if they would just let me." but he wasn't really in charge, and his vision was at odds with the goals of Sister Imperator.
Terzo felt so stifled, it makes sense that he became a "frustrated old guy who hates everyone, especially himself."
and i think this is the reason for the paradox of him having a kind, charming personality onstage and being unsociable offstage. he still gave it his all. he did the best he could with the time and resources he was allowed. that zealous man of the people was still in there somewhere. but he felt betrayed by the clergy, the organization he dedicated his life to. his career ended up being unfulfilling and he was ultimately really bitter about the way things turned out.
he was good. he never got to be great.

Original Romancing anon here! I just wanted to add to the conversation that I also LOVE seeing kink portrayed in a fluid and normalized way!! Like it can just be part of the characters' sex lives, you know? Just a thing they enjoy sometimes. Some nights Copia wears panties and maybe he wants his ass ate and maybe he even wants to be topped. But it doesn't always have to be a 'scene' with someone being 'the dom' and someone being 'the sub' you know? Of course that sort of kink is great as well! But fan works so often fall into that trope that it's super refreshing to see kink written in a more "real" way 💖💖
Hi! Glad to see you back. :)
Yes, I absolutely agree. It doesn't have to be a big production. "Bottom" has unfortunately become synonymous with "submissive". And in that submissiveness, characters are portrayed as these feminized two-dimensional objects there for the "Top's" or "Dom's" pleasure.
Which we see a lot in the portrayal of Terzo for instance. You can write a character that loves to receive. You can write a character that is unapologetically queer. And as a character with not much background, but some, anyone can weave a tale exploring his sexuality, his relationships, and how they shape him as a person. But the integrity of a character is equally as important. We have learned that Terzo has a lot of internal struggle.
“He represents this frustrated old guy who hates everyone, especially himself. But despite his wounds and his darkness, he has a sense of humour and is endearing, like most of my heroes" (Metallian 7/2015).
We have learned that he had big plans for his papacy in leading his flock toward Meliora - the pursuit of something better.
"...even in his formative years, he remained a focused man of vision, looking far into the future, always addressing his people's needs and longings to keep our church together in those turbulent, rapidly changing times" (Source).
And through performances, the unplugged tour, etc., Terzo has made himself clear as a man who looks after the underdog, who has a sense of humor, who encourages the indulgence of pleasure, particularly a certain feminine one, and is very much a complex character in his own right.
So often you see him portrayed as this bed warmer. As someone whose only purpose is to take what he's given because he's the fandom twink. I think it's a disservice to the character. Which might earn me some frowns, but...
We have four old Italian men at our disposal to craft stories around. Which you can take anywhere and do anything with. I am just of the opinion that they should be allowed to remain old Italian men (other than stories set in the past, of course). With all the complexities that the source material we do have, gives us.
I apologize for my essay lol But thank you very much for your ask. I would absolutely eat Copia's ass.

Pairing: Papa Emeritus III / Reader (gn) Genre: angst, fluff Warnings: mentions of death. Also, I don't speak Latin, so forgive me for the rough translations.
Oh, so many ideas for drabbles. I'm getting back on track this time I promise. Chapter 4 of my series is in the works but in the meantime, my account needs a little reviving, take this Terzo drabble I've had in my mind for a bit.
“He represents this frustrated old guy who hates everyone, especially himself. But despite his wounds and his darkness, he has a sense of humor and is endearing, like most of my heroes. The late actor Christopher Lee was an inspiration to me. In many ways, he is Papa.” (Metallian 7/2015) (x)
1.7k words
Through the lens of the world, many would see the utter disgust ripping from the seams. Thread, tinged red with passion and a wave of fuming anger, began to tear, unable to safely retain his truth. It could only hold back so much, he was close to tipping toward the breaking point. After all these years, you'd think he'd at least open the gates, sharing his frustration with a tussle. No, he was trained better than that. Living in constant need of praise from his deadbeat father while trying to uphold the terrifying role of the papacy molded the mind to take whatever criticism was handed to him. He would no longer argue, for it proved to be useless in the past.
So, there he sat, his ears actively shunning every grim word spewing from his father's mouth, the presence of his brothers not helping his case. They said nothing, faces solemn and gazing to the floor. They've all learned their lesson when it came to barking back. It's hard not to when Nihil clearly doesn't know what he raised if he raised them at all. Nihil was an open book; air-headed as they come, narrow-minded, and worst of all, regardless of his power, he's just a submissive toy to his lover, whom he remained unfaithful to and still expects something in return for his hard work. What a sad, old fart.
Well, like it was any of Terzo's business anyway. He'd much rather see his own father suffer in the hands of Sister Imperator, who was much more present in his earlier years than he ever was. She was the one to encourage Terzo to pursue the "Papa-Path" (as he referred it to) like he had a choice. Nevertheless, he would've declined upfront if he had one.
The room had gotten silent as Nihil finished his unnecessary rant, and all Terzo could do was sit there and take it. He felt a strand of thread stretch thinner, bound to break. Slowly he breathed in, easing the enhanced discomfort of his mind. There was a slight ringing in his ear, substituting Nihil’s booming voice. Terzo peered up through his brows, fingers placed on his temple to further show his disinterest. His brothers awaited a response, though they were more invested than he ever was. Instead, he dropped his hand, hoisting himself up from the wingback.
Nihil and Terzo were closer in height as the old man's back curled toward the grave. Give a few years and he'd be with the rest of the family underground, lost in the dark halls of sacred catacombs. His mind cursed him, a sense of relief at the thought.
He glanced over to his eldest brother, who always wore a somber expression for as long as he could remember. Primo, being the first, had to experience the burden of becoming Papa as soon as he could think. At first, the idea of holding so much power to influence others felt, ironically, like a blessing. Until he'd gotten older, he realized and regretted being delivered to the blackened hands of his father. Then, he was burdened, not once, but twice more as Secondo and Terzo arrived around the same time. Primo raised his brothers involuntarily. He wanted them to be better than Nihil, and the rest of the clergy.
Terzo loved him dearly for the tender memories, and it pained him to know that Primo wanted more than to be Papa.
As for the middle child, who knows what he really wanted? Secondo kept to himself most days. He was a studious man before his reign, fishing for attention from anyone of a higher status. Then, during his time, he only lasted a few years after dedicating most of his life to fully understanding the responsibility of being Papa. Not only that, but he wished to share his love with the world.
That left Terzo, who was quite troubled for some time before becoming a puppet. There was nothing left for him now. His time is coming to an end. No fights. Just acceptance.
His brothers glanced back over at him, along with his father. Terzo said nothing, robes draping delicately over his legs, getting caught in the wind with every step forward and out of the conference room.
The thread continued to stretch thinner as he made way through the familiar corridors. He'd taken a longer route back to his room, traveling through the silent garden Primo would spend the rest of his days in. He always appreciated beautiful things. Terzo copied him, deciding he too would cherish the grace of well-kept flowers. Even as the days grew colder, the petals managed to bloom brightly.
Centered in the whimsical garden, down the short flight of stairs, an osier surrounded itself with a ring of stone, beckoning Terzo to sit underneath its bowing arms. He found the right space to rest on, thoughts quickly rushing to his head in the silence of the night. He shuddered thinking of the opportunities that could've been out there for him if his blood wasn't damned.
The early autumn breeze slipped through the hedges, earning a ripple of bustling leaves which calmed the tightened nerves. It was a drastic change in setting; from rising tensions to a quiet life of nature. However, he was too into his stirring thoughts to notice another troubled neighbor wandering behind where he sat. Until he heard the dragging of feet against the graveled floor, his head whipped over his shoulder. There was a sign of embarrassment through his words,
"I didn't realize this place was occupied. I will go then." You wanted to laugh at his proper behavior. It was very unseen when you were with him. He hadn't registered that the presence was familiar because the moon had been shielding itself. He turned again, jumping ever so slightly upon realization.
He breathed out heavily, "Oh, gratias Satanas." Terzo pinched his nose, frustrated, yet relieved. That's when you laughed.
"Is all well, Papa?" He scoffed.
"I wish I could say it was." You walked over, sitting closely at his side, bringing a hand to rub softly across his shoulder blades.
"Do tell. It's beneficial to let these bottled feelings loose." Terzo looked at you, straightening his posture to seem more collected, though you could tell he was not. He looked into your soft eyes, so full of passion, so alive, and so very kind. There was never a moment where he doubted his love for you, and he wanted so badly to live in your arms forever, forgetting all his responsibilities and the rest of the world who expected too much from him.
You felt his eyes look up and down rapidly at your lips. Taking his hand with a small, reassuring squeeze, you kissed him. It was a short one, light in the way he hated. Terzo desired to kiss you heavily, letting you feel his frustration with the burning heat of his body merged against yours. But you were persistent, wanting to hear his words in order to help him truly overcome his worries. Terzo, when upset, could never formulate the right sentences.
"Papa, I know it's hard." You pecked him again, this time holding on a little longer. He sighed into it, hands darting to your cheeks so you wouldn't break away. He pressed hard, trying so desperately to let the moment last. He kissed you again and again in the same spot, the thread losing control only to snap. Terzo's tears didn't make it past his lashes as he blinked them away. It hurt to feel him so shut off, each kiss laced with a sadness you've never felt before. He was so tired of everything. His lips finally pulled from yours, leaning against your forehead as his hands rested where they were.
You caressed his wrists,
"Please. What is wrong?"
"I'm afraid." He confessed.
"Of what?" Everything, he wanted to answer. There was a lot to be afraid of, but what struck his heart was the fear of leaving this world with no legacy left behind for people to remember him by.
Being forgotten.
"My work. It all means nothing. I am nothing." His hands missed the warmth of you when they returned to his lap.
The confession dropped like a bomb. Questions filled the silence in the air. For how long did he feel like this? How did this happen? Why does he think this way? I am nothing. His words repeated in your mind, shattering your soul.
You protested,
"Oh Papa, that's not possible."
"I don't believe that."
"But it's true!" He stifled a sarcastic laugh. You spaced out in thought, thinking of a way to make him see. You grabbed for his hands,
"Then, we'll switch eyes."
"What?"
"Have you got a spoon?"
"A spoon?" You knew it was a silly thing to suggest, and of course, it was all jokes, but you wanted to say something that will at least bring his mood up from the pits of his stomach.
Nodding, you told him your plan.
“Yes, a spoon to scoop our eyes from the sockets. We can trade them." He laughed. It was working.
"Then what?" You smiled,
"You'll wear mine, so you can see that you are worth more than anything in this world. You mean so much to everyone who ever crossed your path."
“And what about mine?”
The wind ruffled the leaves again. September's wind could not be mistaken for October's. It was much gentler, a soothing introduction for the wilting that was to come. Colors die as the months move on before new life is reborn in April when rain is gifted across the land.
Terzo felt the ticking strike in his eyes. Sand drained to the bottom of the bulb hanging over his head. Time was nearing to an end.
“I’ll get rid of them.” The answer got caught in your throat. He’d warned you about his last moments so long ago. At first, it was too far in the future to even consider. Now, you felt the reaper crawl closer.
“But then you won’t be able to see.”
“You see yourself as nothing. I’d rather succumb to the void than wear your eyes, because at least I’ll know you’ll be here, as something.”
As silly as this conversation had ended, Terzo felt lucky. Even in his grave, the fear was replaced with peace. You'd remember him always, not by his role, but by the sputters of white in the sky and the cold wind in the garden, where you offered every part of your warmth that would stay in his still heart forever.

Today in Priest History:
Defenders of the Faith is released on January 4th, 1984! The album charted at
#11
on the UK Albums Chart and at
#18
on the Billboard 200 in the US, where it remained on the charts for a whopping 38 weeks. Its highest charting position was on the Swedish Albums Chart, where it reached
#2
! The first single released from the album was Freewheel Burning in December of 1983, followed by Some Heads Are Gonna Roll in February of 1984. The last single released was Love Bites in April of ‘84. Both Freewheel Burning and Love Bites had a music video made for them, which you can see above!
The album was produced by Priest and by Tom Allom, who produced all of Priest’s 80s albums. As for the artwork of the album, Doug Johnson returned from his work on the Screaming for Vengeance cover and designed a similar creature for this album, this time known as the Metallian. As with Screaming for Vengeance, the back cover of the album contains a message:
“Rising from darkness where hell hath no mercy and the screams of vengeance echo on forever, only those who keep the faith shall escape the wrath of the Metallian... master of all metal.”
Additionally, on this album the Priest logo remains in the same style as it appeared on Screaming for Vengeance. This version of the logo is probably the most well known variation of the Judas Priest logo!
Additionally, of course, this album landed Priest in trouble with the infamous PMRC in 1985. With its suggestive lyrics, “Eat Me Alive” earned itself the
#3
spot on the PMRC’s Filthy Fifteen list, as it was deemed inappropriate for its lyrical content. Priest, of course, responded with “Parental Guidance” a year later on Turbo!
