A lot of talk about the ethics and legality of fanfiction on the dash lately, but don't worry Erin Hunter came to me in a dream and told me that any and all fluff involving the warrior cats is a-okay.

person (perhaps one of multiple idk) who submitted the watchers here, laughing a little because that was like. A few days ago but also i just barely submitted starclan from WC a couple hours before seeing that post
(to be clear: if starclan does get in I am fully expecting them to lose the bracket but i will find great satisfaction in watching it happen)
Ah so you were the first submission. Hello there!
I am counting Starclan because they do fit the exception to the no groups rule. Yes, I know its basically kitty heaven but listen. The cats frequently treat Starclan as a collective and when they pray they pray to Starclan, not any individual dead cats. So it counts.
Also I don't want people submitting individual ghost cats. There are so many, please don't.

join the clanning. join the gen. become the clan of gens...
(also, it's really fun for art exercise and there's no deadlines! you can be as freeform as you like. if you decide to, i'd say go in with the motto of, "let's have fun with other people!" don't rush or force yourself to do things. just enjoy the silly cats for whatever they become to you!)
thank you wise clanon..........

the protagonists of the broken code. who's rootspring
i am tbc's number 1 hater! negative thoughts below
shadowsight: other characters sometimes acknowledge that he was manipulated by ashfur, but the narrative puts all of the blame for the ashfur situation on him, neglecting that (a) he did exactly what he was supposed to do as a healer (obey and take messages from a starclan cat), and (b) the codebreaker hysteria was far more a product of clan culture than the actions of a single apprentice. he isn't treated like the victim that he is, and it is frustrating and not cathartic.
bristlefrost: what the hell does she even do. what does her spy arc accomplish or contribute (like mother, like daughter). she finds out that bramblestar isn't bramblestar far too early. she's so perfect and she has no flaws and she's so empty. i want her to be worse. how much more interesting would she be if she was sneaky and selfish? if she was loyal to the imposter because she truly believed in what he was saying? not to mention how she reciprocates rootspring's feelings with literally zero warning, and ceases to have what little character she'd had to begin with. i genuinely don't care that she dies, they did nothing to make her an engaging character. miss bristlefrost, i'm sorry they did you so bad.
rootspring: first rootpaw thinks he's weird because of his father. i hate this because i hate tree. later, rootpaw thinks he's weird because he can see ghosts. so they give him this "i just want to be normal" deal, and the clans suddenly pretend that ghosts are silly and not real. sure, rootspring and tree are the first clan cats with this specific power. and i get that the clans have very rigid beliefs, and they are afraid of anything that contradicts those beliefs, and that's interesting! but ghosts have been appearing to clan cats all the way back to tpb. fireheart tries to kill clawface at one point and he senses spottedleaf's spirit beside him, there to avenge her death. so rootspring's issue is stupid and he's nothingburger to me.
bramblestar: the arc really depends on me giving a shit about what happens to him. which i don't.
i think bramblestar is unintentionally a bad person and a great character. he proves himself by rejecting tigerstar, but he's still deeply insecure. he makes mistake after mistake (conspiring with tigerstar; hesitating to save firestar from the fox trap; forsaking his children after finding out they're not biologically his; using his power over squirrelflight as a warrior, deputy, and leader to control her), and for none of these mistakes is he held accountable (no thunderclan cat except leafpool learns that he plotted with tigerstar; he is allowed to remain deputy; his children think he was the best father ever; in every situation, squirrelflight seems to bear the consequences of his actions).
in other words, bramblestar gets chance after chance to redeem himself, and he keeps fucking it up. again, that's interesting! there is a story here about how difficult childhoods affect adults, and how powerful men are not held responsible for hurting people. except that's not how he's written. he's written as a completely good person, a brave and noble leader, and all of the clans respect him and they need to get him back.
there's a crazy amount of bramblestar worship in this arc. even rootspring, a brand new skyclan apprentice, thinks about how important bramblestar, the thunderclan leader, is, and how all the clans wouldn't be the same without him. i can't take it seriously.
graystripe: graystripe also got a crazy amount of worship. i couldn't stand reading every few paragraphs about how great he is.
side note: shadowsight, bristlefrost, and rootspring all want the same thing. they advocate against killing bramblestar's body. wouldn't it be more interesting if the protagonists had different perspectives and opinions? if they wanted different things? for example, it makes sense that shadowsight wouldn't want bramblestar dead. he feels like the only way to make up for his mistake is to recover bramblestar alive. but bristlefrost could be in favor of killing bramblestar, because the only way to make up for her mistake (supporting the imposter) is to get rid of him. putting our protagonists at odds would generate some interesting conflict.
conclusion: i also have problems with ashfur (why does ashfur try to stir up trouble with codebreaking which will certainly get him caught when he could just take over bramblestar's body and live quietly with squirrelflight), tigerheartstar, mothwing, starclan, the dark forest insta-death water, firestar possessing rootspring, the pacing (oh my god! they were debating whether to kill bramblestar for like three books! and for three more books they were running in circles in the dark forest!), etc. but i've already written a lot and i'm out of steam lol.
let me finish by saying these are kids books, and i'm not expecting them to be the cream of the crop, but there are a lot of writing choices which are incredibly misogynistic and/or completely baffling from a narrative standpoint. i still have a soft spot for this series though. dammit. okay bye

It was only a matter of time before I joined this trend. I absolutely love how many Clangen blogs have sprung up, each with unique stories, characters that rip my heart out, and art I can and will stare at for ages. Here are six I particularly enjoy. (Specifics under the cut.)
Cats, in order:
Partridgechaser from @whispering-clan -- I'm super interested to see what a connection to the Dark Forest means in this context (where the good vs. bad associations of StarClan and the Dark Forest are blurred). I had the hardest time choosing who to draw from this Clan of all the blogs, but ultimately her DF association and cool design made me want to draw her!
Brackenshine from @glitterclan -- she's been through so much and deserves a break, but I feel like prophecy cats don't have much luck with that. I'm interested in seeing how she and her siblings interpret StarClan's message, and what they'll do next!
Dropletsplash from @splinterclan -- I love this story so much, especially seeing the unique relationships every member of SplinterClan has with each other. I often overlook Droplet in favor of the kits or their parents, but she deserves everything and is trying so hard. Congrats on the apprentice!
Petuniapaw from @clansofafeather -- I wish for their sake they had a better family, but I love a character who tries to be a good person (...or cat) despite being dealt a bad hand. I loved seeing them bond with Amber and the kits, and seeing them be so protective of them despite just being an apprentice. (This is technically not a Clangen blog but the artist/writer has done several of those too!)
Honeypaw from @the-exiled-comic -- technically not a Clangen comic, but I wanted to include someone from this one anyways! I love Honeypaw for his design, enthusiasm, and kindness, and I've enjoyed seeing more of him in the recent chapters.
Wildfirecry from @loudclan-clangen -- the last few updates have been rough, but I absolutely love the character moments and seeing Wildfire get his revenge. Such a cool artstyle, too! Please get out of the crude oil
I'm nervous I mistagged or misnamed anyone, so apologies if that's the case! All of these blogs are such inspirations to me and I'm excited to see where their stories go.

Clan Culture Illustrations
So I've been mentioning this in passing, and I think now is a good time to start collecting info from people who are interested!
I'm seeking artists who want to draw stuff for my Clan Culture series.
I often write very large guides for things like tools, ecology, medicine and treatments, etc, which then get held up by the fact that they're big blocks of text without any fun pictures. I usually collaborate with friends and family, but I could put out more quicker if I had some artists on standby.
If you're an artist who would be interested in illustrating, here's the details;
Everything I make on this blog is tailored towards WC fans, but free for anyone to use and reference for their xenofiction worldbuilding projects. You do not have to be intimately familiar with the Warrior Cats books. This offer's open to anyone above 18.
Fans of Better Bones are preferred, because Clan Culture and BB often intersect. I might ask for help with some BB stuff at some point, too. (for example i have a guide on types of StarClan spirits that needs illustration)
To re-iterate, please only inquire if you're 18+
Price range is 20 - 50 USD and turnaround time can be up to 6 months if you just keep me updated. (I am sorry that I can't offer a higher price for these, but this is coming from my own pocket. In return, this is meant to be low pressure)
Half payment upfront, the rest after completion.
I will never "assign" you a surprise mystery topic (unless you ask for that I guess?), I'll either present you with a list of posts that need illustration (yes this means you get to read stuff early), OR float some ideas that play to your strengths and interests. (for example: if I'm approached by Spider-Enjoyer-9000 who's willing to draw a ridiculous number of spiders, I will draft, write, and research a Clanmew Expansion in the style of Deer and Co or Moths and Butterflies.)
Either way, there's usually a lot of creative freedom here unless I need a specific technical drawing, which I will discuss with you and provide references for. (As an example, if we were talking about a post on declawing, I might ask for you to illustrate the muscles within the paw.)
The nature of Clan Culture means you will probably be asked to draw plants, food, objects, and/or scenery
Still interested?
I'm hoping to make a personal "list" of people I can call on, so send me your commissions info or details in a DM, an ask, a reply to this post, or anything else you'd like. Tell me about stuff you like drawing, topics you're interested in, if you can draw backgrounds, etc
Also, please tell include in that message if you're comfortable with illustrating these particular sensitive topics. These are opt-in only;
Medical Gore (Woundcare, stitching, blood, vomit, urine, parasites and bug bites, etc.)
Reproductive Care (Abortion, birth, pyometria, inducing lactation, possible revamp of the HRT guide including simple surgeries, etc)
Hunting and Butchery (Humane killing of prey, skinning, disembowelment, cutting meat, making sausage and blood pudding, etc)
Funerals and Animal Death (Sad kitties, dead battle cats, scavengers and grave desecration, tombs and burial rituals, concealing decay, etc.)
The end art will always stay tasteful, but I might need to give you references in the form of real images or tutorials that might be upsetting if you're sensitive to these topics-- so it's important to me that I consider those four things "opt-in."
I have plenty of other posts that need illustration, it's just a huge plus if you're able to do these too.
(You should also mention any other specific triggers or phobias you have, so I don't unwittingly come at you with something else upsetting)
"I still have questions!"
Putting a big list of answers beneath the cut;
"Would everything have to be colored?"
Nope, as long as there's pictures to break up the text, you can do sketches, black and white, flat colors, only put color in the header, etc. We'll discuss expectations with the post in front of us, and then agree on price.
I have ONE requirement; it's gotta look good on Tumblr darkmode. Because I use Dark Reader.
"Do you have a Discord?"
I do, I just try to be exclusive with who I give it to! When we're discussing details, we'll probably move over there if you'd like. This is a reason why I only want to work with 18+ artists, I'm not always SFW on main.
"Can we do an entry together about (specific topic)?"
Probably yes, so feel free to ask! The worst that will happen is that I say no, or maybe later. For example, I've got a post on Sweetness Tolerance reserved for my partner (they like to draw sweets), so I would say no if you asked.
Just keep in mind that researching, outlining, and writing is unpaid labor I'm doing completely for free. I have posts mostly done that just need art, and topics I've done some research on. Please only ask for special collaborations from scratch if you're serious 🙏
"Does it have to be digital?"
You'd have to have a WILD idea for me to say yes to anything non-digital, but I am a queer of whimsy. If you can whimsify me with an idea, hell yeah.
"Will I be compensated if you need any changes?"
Yes. If I spring anything on you after the details we agree on, I will first ask you, then ask how much that change would cost, and then compensate you for it.
As fair warning though, I am trying to stay within a budget and writing the posts themselves is unpaid work I do (plus occasional helping hands during research stages, I consulted a friend who is an irl wetlands expert for ShadowClan's environment). I can't pay more than what we agree on.
"Can I link my info in the post?"
Yes. "Guest Artist" is going to be named in the opening paragraphs, along with any fundraiser, shop info, carrd, etc, you want there.
"Boosty?"
Yea I got Boosty. Paypal, too.
"I have some other question about pricing"
Feel free to ask, but my hard budget is 20$ - 50$ US. Please only inquire if you're willing to charge within that range.
"What if I'd do it free or I want to do this anonymously?"
I'll donate to a charity of your choice and link to it in the post. If you have no charity preference, I will link to RAINN, Anera, or The Trevor Project.
(Naturally this comes with an anti-ghoul caveat or two. If you try to get me to donate to something like Autism Speaks I will rotate every bone in your body by 45 degrees.)
"I like checklists, can you give me a checklist of info you want in a DM?"
Sure!
Your info; socials, carrd, shop, etc
General interests and strengths. Stuff you'd love to work on, or have insight to. If you like fishing or drawing bugs, I want to know that. If you particularly want to practice flowers, tell me. Be as detailed as you want so I can pair you with a relevant subject!
Your examples
General asking price (or charity)
Which, if any, of the four Opt-In Subjects you're opting in for.
Anything else I should know (triggers, phobias, things you dislike drawing, if schooling or disability means you need a particularly long turnaround time, etc)

discussing the writing of falconshine's death
Tumblr media
@ladyoftheoceans hi, i'm actually glad you brought this up because i've been wanting to talk about it! admittedly, i had falconshine's death planned very early on. it's very hard to come up with a plot out of vague, randomly generated events, so after establishing a rough idea of falconshine's backstory from the events and right after them getting pregnant, i started planning for their early death.
THE REASON i wanted falconshine to die so early on was because of their vengeful personality -- unfortunately the murder chances in the game are extremely high and i did not want them to go around murdering cats because i wanted them to be a heroic character with a tragic backstory. i didn't want them to end up in the dark forest!
originally i had wanted falconshine to die during the birth of their litter with heatherstar. but this didn't happen, obviously (damn briarfeather and mistswirl for being such good healers). i had already established the colony as a sort of broad antagonistic force, so i turned to this idea instead as a way to kickstart that part of the plot. i kept putting falconshine on border patrols in hopes of them getting killed by a rogue, but this never happened either. this is when i dropped the starclan message from frozenkit to sort of vaguely allude to falconshine's future demise. eventually, sootface had the encounter with a rogue at the border in moon 18. i checked the rogue's profile, and was absolutely taken aback by the sheer size of this cat:
Tumblr media
he's basically a tigerstar clone. so, obviously, i had to make him the leader of the colony. (fun fact...his original name was zeraora. like...the pokemon. i changed it to zephyr so it was kind of similar) with a leader of this group now established, i was now ready to properly kickstart the colony plotline. originally, i had only planned for falconshine to die. buuuut sootface kind of weaseled his way in there as well by provoking the leader of the colony in that event.
just for clarification, i hate going against the game, and i try to work ONLY with what the game gives me. but for falconshine and sootface's deaths, i manufactured them myself to get the plot rolling. in the end i think it worked pretty well!

An explanation of The Rift
I’m making this to give answers to things that our characters will never find answers or explanation to within the story, but things that are helpful to know (and I also just really wanna share my world building whoops)
This will not be everything, but just things I know will never be naturally revealed.
There might be spoilers to things not yet revealed or resolved in the story, so read only if you’re okay with potential spoilers!
-
-
-
-
The Rift itself:
The Rift is a mirror of the Takers world.
If you look at the map you see Chasingclan is one big circle.
Easiest way to explain it: It's one big fae circle.
The sun is cold because it's actually the moon from the Takers world, which is a world of permanent night.
As a result of being mirrored of the Takers world, The Rift is unusual, it grows plant life that's not normally or naturally occurring in those parts of the world. The climate is unusual too, with very little snow in the winter and rainstorms persist for moons with maybe a few days or weeks breaks, followed by droughts.
Pray is sometimes scarce because they too follow the laws of Generations like the cats do.
The rift, as in the chasm that surrounds the territory, is incredibly deep, littered with cliffs and caves. It's also wherein Takers were thrown into, once discovered (or cats that deserve the dark forest, cats who don't get the honour of a burial).
It is impossible to climb out of. But easy to jump as long as you're anything but a G1.
Generations:
“Generations”- meaning the amount of cats that have been born on Chasingclan land. Also shortened to G[number].
For each generation, as Chasingsky’s prophecy said, they get harder and harder for Takers to find.
See Soot and Silk, they're G6, descendants from the first group that formed the clan. Takers have a very hard time finding them. Takers have to be very, very close to even see them- This is why they've been alive so long while being able to go on solo patrols.
Then there's Dew, G7, Takers cannot see him. They can still sense him, but they can't actually see him.
Now, Moth, Crane, and Valley should be G7 too. But they aren't. They're G1.
“Generation” only counts if a cat is born within the Rift.
Everyone from the outside world, not Rift born, are G1.
Outsiders can come and go, as long as they don't stay in Chasing territory for more than 24 hours, if they do, they are stuck and are considered G1. They will never be able to leave alive. They're also fully visible to Takers, they're practically beacons actually.
This is why Quiver and Storm are stuck, and why Glowfern died trying to escape. They are/were all G1.
Gifts:
“Gifts” are mutations that can show up in G1 cats, and they're completely random.
Gifts are given by the cursed lands of the Rift as an evolutionary advantage, if they can survive and pass it onto the next generation the gift can grow stronger or become a permanent fixture in any given bloodline.
Take Silk, she can sense dead cats and has a very easy time receiving messages or visits from them while awake, though she cannot see them. This gift popped up with her ancestor, Fumble, a G1 loner- so the gift itself is only 4 generations old.
(Soot has not inherited this gift.)
Dewbat has the ability to see the dead, both starclan and not. A G1 gift he inherited from July.
Then there's the current G1 cats:
Valley is abnormally strong, but because of her size and just cats in general. Her strength puts her on the same level as a Rottweiler.
Crane has a very intense G1 gift, she lives in the living's world while only being able to see the mirrored world of the Takers. She doesn't know what reality actually looks like.
If a cat, like the triplets, is brought into the clan as G1 they cannot inherit any gifts from their parents.
It actually became a very weird tradition for some families in Chasingclan to give birth outside the Rift and bring the kits back over, making them G1s and hoping they develop a powerful gift. This practice was harshly outlawed after it was found out that G1s were not hidden from Takers.
Skychaser herself punished and banished a few cats that did not follow the rules.

"Yes, but he hadn't truly revealed himself then. You know the cat he was pretending to be, but I know the evil cat he is. He deceived me and made me believe he was giving me messages from StarClan. And even when we found out how evil he was, I had to listen to him the whole time I was his healer. Every word was poison, like snake venom dripping into a pool, but it's helped me understand him." ― Shadowsight

War with ShallowClan? Feels more like theres an internal war about to break out!! Raven’s public violence has been “excusable” so far but cold blooded murder of a cat who’s never not been loyal for roughly 8 years??? I can’t see how this could be seen as a fair punishment for Snap’s refusal to forget their past omg omg I’m so scared and excited to see where this goes!
So! Here's the thing.
(I'm gonna use this ask as a stepping stone to explain the clan's thoughts on all this)
Way back in moon 196, Ravenstar had just been given the name Ravenshade, becoming a warrior not one but TWO moons ahead of schedule, due to how talented and hard-working he was. The clan loved him--he was their newest little prodigy, charming and quick-witted, and pretty much everybody expected him to be a fantastic warrior when he grew up.
Then, that very same moon, Feathersight recieved an omen while he was out gathering herbs--a pawful of shiny raven feathers falling from the sky. Could it have been a natural phenomenon? Sure. But he knew instinctively (as anyone that close to Starclan does) that it was an omen, and though he couldn't parse the meaning of it, he, like most cats, assumed it had something to do with the freshly-named Ravenshade, and brought the message to Cherrystar. News traveled fast about the omen--naturally, it was assumed to be Starclan telling them "hey everyone! see this kid? he's going to be something special!"
Fast forward. Poppyfeather and Ravenshade go out on patrol, and only Ravenshade returns, with remorse written on every bit of his face. He tells everyone how hard he tried to save her, how he wasn't enough. He sits at her vigil alongside everyone else, head bowed and ears back. It's then that Flamefall, Ravenshade's friend and his old apprentice, shyly approaches Cherrystar to remind her of that omen. "Of course!" everyone thinks. "He's not just going to be a great warrior, he's going to be a great deputy! Maybe even a great leader!" And so Cherrystar appoints him as her newest second in command.
Ravenshade serves the clan well as deputy. He's smart, skilled, and good with the apprentices, who think that he's the coolest cat to ever grace Fallenclan with his presence. He remains deputy for many moons until one fateful day, when he goes to visit her in her den and she's dead on the floor. It's a tragedy, but still, the clan celebrates. Not just for Cherrystar's life, but for Ravenshade--now Ravenstar--'s leadership! He truely will be a fantastic leader, if he was chosen by Starclan.
And he is! He's a bit harsh, maybe, but he keeps a tight ship, and the clan has never had so much prey, or had so little trouble keeping rogues and other clan's cats off of Fallenclan territory.
And then... he kills Sandsnap.
Yes, it's... harsh. To put it lightly. But Sandsnap had said, in front of the whole clan, that he still considered himself a part of another clan!Such a thing just couldn't happen. It was unheard of, disloyal, and maybe Ravenstar was right to enact such a punishment. In fact, he almost certainly was! If he was Starclan's chosen one, that meant that everything he did was just an extension of Starclan's will.
Right?

Do you ever play with the games code (change designs ect)?
Oh this is an EXCELLENT question for a slow work day…
Overall, I try not to make any major changes, but I definitely have screwed around with the code a few times. Probably the most MAJOR thing has been resurrecting Tigertoe TWICE. She died TWICE in like the first 20 moons and I wasn’t going to let her go out like that.
But here are some of the lesser things I’ve done to the code if you’re curious:
-Added Ring’s burn scars and death messages from when he lost those lives in a fire
-Added Goldmask into the game (she wasn’t there on startup)
-Made Monkeypaw the starclan guide (rip Dandelionmouse)
-Changed almost every cat’s name. All prefixes and most suffixes.
-Made Clown’s skin red so he could have a red nose
-Changed the clangen backgrounds to custom ones
-Turned off Rings kit toggle specifically, and eventually turned off “kits with unknown parent” because there were just TOO many single parents running around
-I don’t think I’ve changed any designs? I tried changing Tiger’s once but eventually decided Nahhh leave her be
I’ve mentioned it before, but the clangen rng has given me some EXCELLENT juicy lore and events, so I haven’t had to meddle very much. Most everything that happens in the comics is adapted directly from clangen events

Poolverse!Protagonists: Sunflare, Poolmask, and Ryeseed!
For those who haven't been following me since I (tried) to get this kicking, Poolverse (formerly known as a new generation/actual name pending) is a nextgen AU revolving around an alternate AVOS cast. It's set in the aftermath of a very different OotS where the Clans decide to abolish the borders and attempt to live peacefully...to mixed results. This is a soft reboot of it!
(major changes + character bios under the cut)
Major Changes
Obviously, aforementioned abolishing of the borders, but also getting rid of certain parts of the code. Cross-clan relationships are now allowed as well as medic relations, though they still face stigma from other cats.
OotS is very different, with the Dark Forest successfully capturing ThunderClan and WindClan territory. The remaining Clan members banded together in ShadowClan and RiverClan territory and fought back, succeeding in defeating the Dark Forest but losing many lives in the process.
Brambleclaw fled the Clans after the battle, opting to live as a housecat instead. Squirrelflight left shortly after, having bonded with a familiar loner and opting to live outside the borders with him. She occasionally visits ThunderClan and meets with Leafpool often.
Hollyleaf, surviving her wounds, takes the mantle of leadership at Brambleclaw's request- much to some of the members of ThunderClan's dismay. Brightheart acts as her deputy but intends to retire once ThunderClan is more stable.
A new rank has been added: courier! These cats are responsible for delivering messages that need to be sent before the next gathering. Thought of by Heathertail when WindClan cats were ordered to deliver messages between bases during the Great Battle. The role has persisted on afterwards.
Sunflare (She/Her)
Clan: ThunderClan Rank: Warrior Brief Description: The product of a brief and tumultuous affair between Heathertail and Lionblaze during the Great Battle, Sunflare is a cool, calm and collected Warrior...for the most part. Sunflare takes quiet pride in her lineage, having been nursed with stories of prophecies and grand battles, she's well aware of her father's past reputation as an unstoppable Warrior who could take on countless warriors...and secretly wonders how she can get that power for herself.
Poolmask (He/They)
Clan: ThunderClan Rank: Medic-in-Training Brief Description: A serious no-nonsense Tom who often prefers to keep silent than speak. Poolmask has a strong sense of routine and order, liking things to be just as he would leave them. While formally admiring and respecting his mothers, he finds himself grappling with a strained relationship as he grows older and begins to learn that Hollystar has been hiding secrets from him.
Ryeseed (She/He/They)
Clan: ThunderClan Rank: Courier Brief Description: A playful, mischievous, and occasionally destructive cat. Ryeseed takes her father's dry humor and her mother's boisterous spirit in stride and can often be found playing pranks on other ThunderClan cats. One of the first of a new rank, courier, Ryeseed can often be seen bounding across the lake territories, and it is how she stumbles across a sign from StarClan warning her of what's to come.
