What do you think constitutes as a 'monster'? In the scary monster Halloween event mummies, vampires, werewolves, skeletons and dragons seem to be monsters but there was also the ghost pirate, so do ghosts constitute as monsters? Is 'monster' a term used for creatures that aren't part of the main four species (humans, fairies, merpeople, beastpeople)?

I honestly don't think what counts as "monster" and "non-monster" is a huge distinction to make, nor is it strongly defined in the world of Twisted Wonderland. I also don't think it's something as simple as "these specific 4 races are not monsters and anything outside of these 4 are monsters" because that's just a really arbitrary decision. The labels themselves (if this is the case) are also extremely unfair, as it implies negative things about the non-dominant species when they really haven't done anything to warrant it and can't control the population of their species to come "out" of that monster label. I think it's much more likely that what makes something a "monster" is how it compares to a human in terms of life functions. For many of the "monsters" listed (vampires, mummies, skeletons, ghosts, etc.), they have unnatural means of coming into existence. These creatures are not "born" like a normal living creature would be. Rather, they "turn" or are "made" somehow. In the case of the werewolf, they're also "unnatural" in a magical sense because people are not able to shift into different forms on their own. Even beastmen cannot just assume beast form; Jack's the exception due to his UM. Merfolk need to take a special potion to maintain their human forms, and can only shift in cases when they want to revert back to their merforms from their human forms. They'd need to take another transformation potion to gain legs again. Because a werewolf defies these constraints, that may be what makes them "monsters".

Finally, we come to dragons, which is a particularly special case. We learn that Malleus himself, being a dragon fae, has ancestors who are real dragons. We also learn that beastmen are descended from real animals, and, from this, can probably also deduce that merfolk are also descended from various sea creatures. For this reason, some fae, beastmen, and merfolk are "monstrous" in some regard. However, the label "monster" is seen as derogatory, and is meant to be clearly distinct from just "animal" (see: Malleus's reaction to Rook saying he is "more monster than animal" in Rook's PE vignette). Therefore, beastmen and merfolk are off the hook for this discussion, since their ancestors are animals and not "monsters".

I also considered intelligence being a factor for the monster/non-monster distinction, but that doesn't seem to hold up when you consider that Phantoms and Grim are also called monsters or beasts. Buuut there are cases of intelligent Phantoms, and Grim himself is capable of human speech which is incredibly remarkable. We also don't know enough details about dragons themselves to know if they are "wild" and incapable of human speech. The one thing I could say about dragons that makes them different from humans (and thus fit into my earlier proposal) is that they probably produce eggs that have to be incubated to hatch (similar to chickens, I guess??), if Malleus's birth is anything to go off of. This creates a distinction between human reproduction and dragon reproduction--and since Malleus and other dragon fae have elements of both, it supports the idea that it can be difficult to reconcile with one's humanity vs being seen as something inhuman from the start. This could explain why Malleus takes such offense when Rook comments in the vignette I indicated: it's questioning his humanity.

ask game where Yoichi who lives in a small cottage on the beach one day finds an injured mermaid (which is AFO) on the shore and decides to help it. It turns out to be the biggest mistake of his life.

Poor Yoichi, once again doomed after foolishly inviting AFO into his life:

Yoichi is a marine biologist. When he finds an injured merman with white hair and red eyes washed up on the beach, he immediately takes him home. Yoichi tends to the injuries and keeps him in a bathtub filled with saltwater. He does not tell anyone, because he assumes if merpeople have not revealed themselves to humans then they don't want to be known. Although Yoichi cannot speak the merman's language, he uses pictures to figure out that he eats raw fish.

As soon as the merman is well enough to swim, Yoichi sneaks him back to the beach. The merman grabs Yoichi's head and drags him under. Unbeknownst to Yoichi, he saved All for One, the King of the Mer. All for One is a cruel and tyrannical king who got injured in a battle against rebels. He feels grateful to Yoichi for saving his life, and has decide to express that gratitude by turning Yoichi into a mer.

Merpeople have no reproductive organs, so they reproduce by drowning humans. This process transforms humans into their own kind. Usually merpeople pick children, who are easier to make forget about their past. Sometimes merpeople will fall in love/lust with a human and decide to drown them. It's unusual to adopt someone as old as Yoichi into a family but not unprecedented.

All for One brings Yoichi back to his castle and announces that Yoichi is his new brother. Using magic, All for One erases Yoichi's memories. But it does not work perfectly because Yoichi is too old.

For many years, Yoichi lives with his overprotective brother in the underwater castle. Yoichi keeps having terrifying dreams of drowning. He also clashes with his older brother over his cruelty toward those he considers lesser.

One day a mer expedition brings back a microscope from a shipwreck, and it triggers Yoichi's memories of his past. He tries to run away. All for One locks Yoichi inside a dark trench to break his spirit so it will be easier to remove his memories again.

Second is a Cecaelia (half octopus-half human) and Third is a neried (sea nymph). Both of their people are enemies to All for One. They find Yoichi while investigating what All for One is hiding in the trench, and rescue him.

Yoichi never had any family to return to in the human world, and so much time has passed that the most of the people he knew have died of old age. But he finds happiness with two new loves, living in freedom.

I’m not even gonna try n conceal the fact that this is all 100% self indulgent and self catered but ok. Merpeople reproduction.

You can forget everything you may or may not know about fish reproduction cuz in my world it doesn’t take place entirely internally or externally but a bit of both. The female ovulates, but instead of just one, it’s a whole clutch of eggs sitting in her uterus. Then the male with his sharky retractable claspers comes and fertilises them. After about three months or smth, the eggs have developed shells and they get lain by the female (which is a whole sexual experience in and of itself)

Here’s the real beauty of it tho— once they’re lain, the parents get to give them up to the communal nursery/school that merfolk traditionally have, and they don’t have to have anything to do with their offspring ever again. It’s breeding minus the responsibilities of parenthood ✨

There are ways to give validity to pretty much any reproductive method, and it all depends on what works best for the story you’re trying to tell. Reproduction can be as diverse as the creatures we dream up, as it’s all present in the animal kingdom. Hell, if you’re ever looking for creative repro ideas, look no further than insects. You’ll find everything and it all serves a specific purpose.

That’s why I can get opinionated about merfolk repro sometimes, because narratives forget how reproduction serves a purpose. Defaulting to “oh they’re fishes” doesn’t always enhance a narrative and can sometimes make it lose fidelity.

“Fishy” repro makes sense on the surface because…fish scales? But internal reproduction has a lot of evolutionary purposes. How a species reproduces can tell you a lot about how they live in general. We can define these specific reproductive methods which I’m borrowing from mammals:

Yuneva Little Mermaid AU, for you 💚

Hiya Little fan 🥰! Of course, and I actually started working on this the moment it showed up in my askbox abwjwjs. This is actually the second fic I wrote with this AU in mind, the first one actually came out as more of a first chapter to a series and is at 4.8k words sooo…that one I’ll have to post seperately 🤭. But I hope you enjoy~!

Neva gasped as she raised her head above the water and looked around wildly. She wasn’t in the Sea Witch’s cave anymore; instead she seemed to be on some sort of beach…

“ Isn’t this… the beach that Prince Yuno comes to?” She wondered as she took in the sights, smells, and sand beneath her fingers and toes.

Wait, toes?

Neva blinked and suddenly looked down; instead of seeing her purple tail, she saw a pair of human legs.

It worked…it really worked!

“ I can’t believe it, I’m a human!” Neva thought in excitement as a smile appeared on her face. “ I have toes, feet, ankles, legs, thighs…I’m really a human!”

She had to admit; there was a part of her that had thought that the Sea Witch, Vanica, was full of it when she told her that she could turn her into a human. But as she wiggled her toes and raised her leg, she realized how wrong she was!

“ Oh my, what do we have here?” A voice called from above, causing Neva to look up.

Circling above her was a seagull, who also happened to be a friend of hers, named David. The young bird flew down towards her and landed on her knees.

“ Well if it isn’t the diamond of the sea, Princess Neva!” David said cheerfully as he looked at the young woman.

“ Hm, something seems different about you,” David muttered as he stared at her, a hand rubbing his chin as he thought about it. “ But what could it be? Your hair? Nah. Your…teeth? Nope that’s not it either.”

Klaus sighed in irritation, and he couldn’t stop himself from facepalming.

“ Legs. The girl has legs, you idiot!” Klaus shouted. “ Neva traded her voice to the Sea Witch for a chance to become human!”

“ Ooh, that’s what’s different!” David said as he looked down and noticed Neva’s legs that he was perched on. “ They look great on you kid!”

Klaus grabbed a stone and threw it at the bird, effectively hitting him on the back of the head.

“ What did you do that for?!”

“ Because apparently you don’t understand how dire this situation is!” Klaus said seriously as he glared at the bird. “ Neva sold her voice to the Sea Witch, and now she has three months to get the Prince to fall in love with her in order to keep her legs!”

“ What’ll happen to her if she fails?” David asked hesitantly.

“ If she fails, she’ll be turned back into a mermaid and she’ll lose her voice forever!”

David gasped at the crabs words.

“ Oh this is bad.”

“ You think?!”

As the crab and the seagull bickered, Neva rolled her eyes and shook her head; this wasn’t really the time or place for this. But what could she do? She couldn’t tell them to stop since her voice was gone.

“ Maybe I should try to stand up?” She thought with a small frown. She placed her hands at her sides, pushed up and off the ground.

Her legs began to quiver, and she began to wobble one way and then another as she tried to walk. Eventually she reached out and braced herself on a nearby boulder, a huff of annoyance escaping her as she glared down at her trembling legs.

Walking was a lot harder than she initially thought!

“ First things first; we need to find the Princess some clothes! Because if she tries to meet the prince looking like this, then I’m pretty sure she’ll end up spending the next three months behind bars for indecent exposure!” Klaus said quickly as he averted his gaze, Neva looked down.

Ah that was right, humans and merpeople were anatomically different; at least when it came to their reproductive organs. A mermaids was hidden by their tails, while a human had to cover theirs up with what Klaus called ‘clothing’.

“ Pfft that won’t be a problem! Just give me a few minutes and I’ll find the best dress in this entire kingdom for our Neva!” David said quickly before flying away towards the kingdom, Klaus sighed heavily and shook his head.

“ I have a bad feeling about this.”

A few minutes later

“ Well, what do you think? It’s pretty nice right?” David asked with a proud smile. Klaus groaned and once again facepalmed.

‘Nice’ wouldn’t be the word Neva would use to describe this…dress?

It was a loose, purple colored fabric that was wrapped awkwardly around her with white rope tied around it in order to keep it from slipping off.

This…this wasn’t like the beautiful dresses that she had seen other humans wear…

“ What do you think?” Her purple eyes asked Klaus hesitantly, but he just shook his head.

“ It’s not the best, but it’ll have to do for now,” He said in dismay. Neva felt her shoulders slump slightly in disappointment.

Would the Prince feel the same way once he saw her?

Meanwhile, on the other side of the beach, was Prince Yuno and his loyal sheepdog Belle. The two were running around playing as they normally did, when she suddenly stopped.

“ Belle, what is it?” He asked with a frown as he began walking over to her. “ Did you hear something?”

But before Yuno could reach her, Belle turned around and began to run quickly down the beach. The young man cursed under his breath before he ran after her.

Back behind the boulders; Neva, Klaus, and David were all discussing where to find Prince Yuno, and how to approach him, when suddenly a flash of gold flew around the boulder and looked at them.

Everyone stopped moving for a moment and just stared at each other to see who was going to make the first move; when the creature suddenly took a deep breath and rushed towards the trio.

“ Neva, run!” Klaus shouted as he ran off towards the ocean and David flew up into the sky.

Neva quickly looked around for something, anything, to hide behind or to use to get away from this creature. But the only thing there was an elevated stone that sat in the middle of this small beach.

It would have to do!

She quickly ran towards it with the creature close behind her. Neva ran around, and around, and around the stone a few times before finally managing to climb on top of the stone. A sigh of relief escaped her as she stared at the disappointed animal.

“ If I didn’t have these legs, I probably would have been caught by this animal. Legs really are convenient!” Neva thought with a small smile.

As she looked at the animal, she couldn’t stop herself from thinking how cute it was! It had long, golden hair and green eyes that stared at her with a perplexed look. But as Neva looked at it more, she noticed the dog looked very familiar…and after a moment she gasped.

This animal belonged to-!

“ Belle, there you are!” Prince Yuno exclaimed, his golden colored eyes narrowed and a stern expression appeared on his face.

So, this animal was called Belle? Interesting.

Yuno’s eyes traveled from Belle to what she was barking at and his eyes widened and his brows raised slightly in surprise.

Sitting on the rock, looking just as surprised to see him as he was surprised to see her, was a young woman.

“ Oh…hello,” He muttered softly as he stared at her.

The woman with platinum blonde hair, and bright purple eyes, nodded in greeting.

Yuno tilted his head a bit; this girl, why did she look so familiar? As he opened his mouth to ask, Belle suddenly barked at the woman.

“ Oh, I’m sorry,” Yuno apologized as he rushed over to grab Belle. “ She’s not normally like this, she’s usually a good dog.”

Neva tilted her head, so this was a dog in the human world? Huh. She thought they would look closer to the ones they had in Atlantica.

“ Are you hurt?” He asked after he calmed Belle down, his eyes quickly giving her a small once over as she quickly shook her head. He softly sighed in relief, the last thing he wanted was for Belle to get in trouble for accidentally hurting someone…

“ Have…we met before? I feel like I’ve seen you somewhere before.” He asked her softly, his brow furrowing in thought as he tried to rack his brain.

“ He remembers me?” Neva thought in surprise as her eyes widened. “ I…can’t believe it. I thought he would have forgotten by now since it’s been weeks since that day. But if he truly remembers me then this might be a little easier than I thought!”

With that thought in mind, she nodded eagerly at his question. Yuno’s eyes widened and a soft gasp escaped him.

“ Are you…are you the angel that saved me?” Yuno asked, and Neva blinked in surprise.

The angel?

As he realized what he had said, Yuno’s face turned a bright shade of pink and he averted his gaze as a hand reached up to rub the back of his head in embarrassment.

“ I-I mean; are you the woman who saved me after the shipwreck a few weeks ago?” He corrected himself after quietly clearing his throat. Neva bit her bottom lip in order to suppress a giggle that bubbled in her throat.

He looked…really different when he was embarrassed. He always looked so serious whenever she saw him, or he would have a cool, aloof aura about him. But right now he looked like a normal twenty year old man who had accidentally said something embarrassing in front of a stranger.

“ So I was right; there is more to him than meets the eye,” Neva thought softly as she stared at the embarrassed young man in front of her.

“ I…want to see this side of him more.”

Neva once again nodded, confirming Yuno’s suspicion that she was the one who saved him.

“ I thought so,” He said with a small grin. “ I’ve been looking for you.”

“ He’s been looking for me?” Neva’s brows raised and her lips parted in surprise.

“ I wanted to meet you, and thank you for saving me that day,” He explained as he moved closer to her. “ Can you tell me your name?”

Neva opened her mouth and told him her name; but nothing came out.

Her eyes widened and her hands immediately went to her throat. For a moment, she had completely forgotten that she no longer had a voice, and now that remembered her heart sank into the pit of her stomach.

Yuno’s brows furrowed in confusion and in slight concern.

“ What's wrong? Did something happen to your voice?” He asked, and she nodded a bit before tapping her throat with her hands and made an X shape with her hands.

“ You…don’t have a voice?” He asked, and she nodded.

The grin slipped from Yuno’s face and a disappointed look appeared in his amber eyes, and that only made Neva’s heart sink further.

“ Then, there’s no way you could be the woman that saved me,” He muttered softly as his gaze moved from her and towards the ocean. Neva frowned for a moment before she realized why he was saying that; she had sung to him that day, and that was probably what he remembered most.

The two sat in an awkward silence for a moment, both lost in their own thoughts. Yuno glanced at the mysterious woman for a moment before his gaze shifted across the area; it wouldn’t be right for him to leave her all alone out here, especially after learning that she didn’t have a voice. But there was another reason why he didn’t want to leave her here:

For a reason unbeknownst to him, he felt drawn to this woman even though she wasn’t the one that saved him, and because of that…he wanted to get to know her more.

So, he held out a hand towards her.

“ You can’t stay out here by yourself,” Yuno told her softly as a confused look crossed her face. “ So, I think you should come back to the castle with me. That way you can get checked out by the doctors, and then…you can tell me your name.” He added as his gaze once again moved away from her.

Neva stared at his hand for a moment, he wanted her to come back with him? Then, did that mean he wanted to get to know her too? Or, was it just because he was concerned about her safety?

Either way, this was a good thing right? This meant she could spend more time with him, and maybe get him to fall in love with her…

She reached out and took his hand. He helped her off the rock, and when she tried to stand again, her legs began to shake before collapsing beneath her weight.

“ Hey! You okay?” Yuno exclaimed as he quickly caught her and pulled her close in order to keep her from falling.

The pair's eyes widened and their faces turned bright red. Neva’s hands gripped his shirt tightly, and Yuno’s arms were wrapped around her waist securely. The closeness of their bodies didn’t go unnoticed by either of them; and it only made their faces turn even more red, and their hearts to quicken.

“ Let’s…get you back to the castle,” Yuno muttered softly, clearing his throat but keeping his arms around her. “ Don’t worry, I won’t let you fall. So just lean against me.” He added, his voice still soft but holding a serious edge to it. Neva’s heart skipped a beat for a moment before she nodded in agreement.

As they, along with Belle, began to make their way back to the castle. Neva glanced over her shoulder at Klaus and David, giving them a sheepish look and a small shrug.

This hadn’t been quite the meeting any of them had anticipated, but it worked. Now she just had three months to get Prince Yuno to fall in love with her.

No pressure, right?

Did I just spend 30 minutes on a scientific website, reading about the reproductive system of merpeople?

Yes.

Scientifically, it turns out that merpeople won't lay eggs.

They would mate just like how humans do and the mermaid would give birth from a 'urogenital' opening in their tail.

I know you get weird-ass biology fanfic in any fandom, but the stuff for Minecraft/Hermitcraft/Traffic Series/DSMP etc is all extra-funny to me because hey...

You never know!

I mean, Minecraft is a game that leaves a lot to the imagination when it comes to all the sciences. Physics, schmisics, amirite? But it does the same thing with biology. We only know a few things about how the block people of Minecraft work, but they clearly are not operating exactly on human hardware.

Everybody can lift thousands of times their own body weight with no trouble. Injury is common but goes away almost instantly if you have food. Everybody eats but nobody poops, the food just evaporates inside the body. Sleeping is possible, but only in a bed, and it does not make you feel better or last any amount of objective time, it just makes the sun move. (Schmisics!) There are no canonical primary or secondary sexual characteristics for any creature. If there are two Minecraft genders, they appear to be Thick Arms or Thin Arms, but this is speculative at best. Reproduction does not happen among PCs, but in the closely-related villagers, it happens randomly and apparently through some variety of food-related negotiations process.

So where does that leave the fanfic author except with an absolutely wide-open field for whatever? Two genders? Sure? Three genders? Ten genders? Zero genders? Infinity genders? All equally canonical! Which genders can get pregnant? Dunno, you're making all of this up anyway, go nuts! Sleep until true love's kiss? Sure, sleep is just suspended animation anyway, right? Biologically-bound Soulmates? Why not, there's even mods for that! Cough up flowers from unrequited devotion? Do it! Who knows what your lungs even look like! Hybrids with animal characteristics? Merpeople with underwater cities? Different species of player character from different world dimensions? Sure, that's all well within the realm of possibility. When nothing is canon except what individual characters say about themselves and each other, there's a lot of room on the table for experimentation.

Which is just to say, I guess, that weird-ass fanfiction has a special place in these fandoms because technically it is just as plausible as anything else that people are writing about. Mostly it just amuses me because sometimes I'll be reading a fic and something will happen that makes me say "humans do not WORK like that!" and then I'll think it over again and realize "Well, that's actually literally as likely as anything else in this world" and move on. And it's very funny.

I suppose merpeople genitals would be covered by a thick layer of skin so when they get horny, the tentadick or the slit would gradually come out if stimulated enough. It's like a peekaboo.

Merpeople AU

Live in secret at the bottom of the ocean, too deep for their bodies to get to the surface for discovery. Humans consider them legends.

Some are born with powers, such as hydrokinesis, shape shifting, and ability to control animals.

• Biology

o Gills in necks

o Claws

o Raccoon-like teeth setup.

o Eyes are developed to see in pinch dark, sunlight nearly blinds them.

o Hair is actually thin tentacles like a jellyfish’s. No facial or body hair. Starts growing after hatching.

How does a merman reproduce?

Thank you for this question, because it gives me the splendid opportunity to elaborate on merman reproduction.

Ths short answer is: it depends on the species of ocean life form they are.

As you probably have already read in my previous headcanons, there is a merman species for every sea life creature, and they peacefully coexist within a society

Actually not THAT peaceful, seeing that merpeople can actually eat other merpeople if they are too weak, too defenseless or a tasty species

But back to the question

Most species lay eggs.

In warmer climates, the female lays the eggs and both parents protect them (so that they aren’t devoured by another merman or another sea creature) until they hatch; then the merbabies stay close to their parents until they are capable of living on their own.

In colder climates, the female lays the eggs and then adheres them onto her husband’s stomach, so they are warmed by his body heat and for protection. If there are many eggs, they carry them half and half.

Species of merpeople who are like sea mammals reproduce like sea mammals; hence the female gives birth to fully developed merbabies, which she breastfeeds, until they are old enough to learn how to catch pray by themselves. 

Usually that kind of merpeople are considered “higher class” in mer societies because their babies are much less vulnerable than helpless eggs which can be prayed upon more easily.

Finally, there are some species of perpeople who don’t even need to have sex to reproduce. At a specific time period, they all gather at a specific place, they release their sperm and eggs into the water and the eggs are thus fertilized and carried away with the tides. If they are lucky, some of those millions of fertilized eggs will survive predators and become adult merpeople.

Using the same logic, that is the lower class of merpeople. 

Now, when it comes to sex, the same principle applies: they reproduce like their fish species counterparts.

It is possible for two different species to have children together, granted that they have the same way of reproduction. There can be no offsprings if a egg laying merperson mates with a child bearing one, for example. If the two merpeople have the same way of reproduction, their babies won’t be a “mixed species”. Some will be of the one parent’s species and some of the other’s.

Speaking of sex and reproduction in mer societies, homosexuality is a huge taboo at best and a criminal act at worst. 

Things get even more complicated when it comes to intersex/hermaphrodite merpeople. Although some species might have both male and female reproductive systems, they are rare and mostly deep sea creatures since finding a mate is way more difficult and there is a greater need for reproduction if two deep sea merpeople cross paths. However, they are typically not acknowledged in mer societies due to their rarity and their disabilities when it comes to live closer to sea level, and since homosexuality is frowned upon, it can be exceedingly hard for them to have a healthy relationship and a family.

Does Mer Ezra age the same way as a human does?

This is something only God (aka the author) knows 😆 None of the characters in this AU are sure how Ezra ages, especially since he’s the first and only merperson the world (aka Rex, Wolffe, Gregor, and eventually Kanan) has ever seen, and his uncles aren’t even really sure what his actual age is. They estimate he was between 3-5 years old when they first found him, given that he had all of his baby teeth and could talk in his native language, and had reached other developmental milestones equivalent to human children. He is roughly 15 when this story takes place. 

What I know is that merpeople are highly intelligent and experience physical development earlier than humans, due to the dangerous underwater environment they live in. Merbabies are born with excellent eyesight and much more developed brains than a human infant, but they’re also born smaller than human babies, typically averaging between 4-6 pounds for a healthy child. (Bigger brains = bigger skull = more difficult to pass through the birth canal, even for merpeople who don’t have to worry about the size of their pelvic outlet.) Because merbabies are born sooner, they are instinctively wired to run and hide, and are much quieter than their human counterparts. Crying would attract predators, you see, and merpeople have 10x more sensitive ears than humans, so the merbaby doesn’t have to make much noise to get their parents’ attention. 

Technically merpeople are mammals in that they breathe through their lungs, make milk, and give birth to live young, but they are actually in a class all their own, a hybridization between mammals and osteichthyes. They have scale-covered skin on their tails, which they shed and regrow continuously, rather like hair, and antifreeze proteins in their blood to allow them to dive down into freezing depths. Not to mention all the special physiological features like scotopic (night) vision and being able to adjust the pressure in their bodies (controlled subconsciously by the pons and medulla of the brainstem; humans don’t have to consciously think about blinking or breathing, we just do it, and that’s how it is for merpeople).

Ezra has no idea just how special his body is because he’s never been given the chance to really exercise his abilities. He’s lived in “shallow” water (<100 ft) all his life. 

It’s also important to note that, in certain situations (based mostly on environmental factors, but may be preferentially induced), mermen can get pregnant and merwomen have the ability to inseminate :)

It also makes me wonder if they're closer to fish or whales, meaning do they carry their offspring or lay eggs? Anyway, I would be so excited if you got around to writing this au for lucemond!!!

That's certainly interesting! In this AU, I would say they're like dolphins and have either a retractable penis or a vagina. They carry their offspring. 😊 When they transform into human form, their reproductive organs transform too. It's dangerous and can result in a deformed baby if they shift during pregnancy. Also, shifting hurts (both ways).

Mer!Otto AU masterpost

I have to admit that I made this au specifically for spicy purposes, but it quickly turned into something much more extensive in my mind, so here it is!!

I got inspired to make my own Mer!Otto by this art and this fic. The idea was playing around my brain for a while, then someone asked me to draw something I’d been wanting to but hadn’t found the time to do yet and I said “bet,” and then my mer!Otto happened. He’s gone through a few little updates as I’ve continued to write, but I’ve more or less solidified his physical design at this point.

The Info

History/story:

This particular au Otto has a super long lifespan, upwards of a few thousand years

He’s one of only a few remaining merpeople of his particular species, most of whom died out fairly soon after he reached maturity

He’s been around long enough that he was once revered as a sea god, and people painted him on pottery, most of which has been lost to time

He began his life quite innocent, just learning about the world on his own

Was amused and unbothered by the groups of people who thought he was a god, mostly because he was still fairly young at the time

He became more aggressive as he got older, and had a few phases of about 50 years each (first in early sailing history, then maybe in the early 1600s, and then later in the 1700s) where he fought a lot of whalers/sailors/general seafarers, and was even known to terrorize smaller ships for fun

The seafarers of all kinds who mistook him for either a whale or were hunting him specifically during those times usually didn’t return from their voyages

He has had a decent amount of interactions with peaceful land-bound humans during his lifetime, mostly from people who had heard the myths, who were trying to make some sort of sacrifice to a sea god, or who plain stumbled upon him by accident, his dealings with these types of people have mostly been pleasant

In more modern times he has mostly retreated to one particular hidden cave, in an attempt to live in peace and avoid modern recording and hunting technology, though he’s a little magical so cameras don’t really pick him up properly

Physical stuff:

He’s BIG and incredibly inhumanly strong

His human skin is a very pale blue/green/grey color, his octopus skin is a dark blueish-green

His eyes have black sclera, orange and gold irises, and horizontal pupils (like an octopus lmao)

His teeth are bone-colored and very sharp

He’s got half-inch long dark green claws on each of his fingers

His hair is brown and wavy just like canon Otto (more like NWH Otto)

His octopus half connects to his human half just below his tiddies, and a trail of octopus skin leads part way up over his sternum

He has three hearts (and other as of yet undetermined strangeness in his organs bc of the human/octopus hybrid business lmao)

His blood is blue, which makes his mucus membranes (inside of his mouth, etc) blue-green in color, and also makes him blush the same blue-green

He’s cold blooded but can still function totally normally in water of any temp including freezing deep sea water

His skin can change colors for camouflage purposes and it also sometimes does randomly when he’s asleep and dreaming

He doesn’t need to sleep as much as humans do but does anyway sometimes just because

The tip of his hectocotylus (reproductive tentacle) is shaped a bit like a rounded bud, with six segments that open like a flower, allowing the tentacle to lodge inside a host for better egg-transferring success

His body makes eggs constantly, so there’s always a fresh supply, and any that are over a few days old just get absorbed back into his system

He can also produce several different types of goop, mostly for reproductive uses

Personality:

He’s very similar to how I imagine canon Doc Ock, aka suave, jaded, with a slightly more prickly exterior, but on the inside he’s got a heart(s) as soft as the squishiest marshmallow.

He is initially a bit aggressive toward anyone who finds him, mostly to figure out what they want, but if the person takes long enough to explain themselves and is nice, he softens up quite a bit

He likes music, tasty food, and pretty things

He doesn’t like people who want to hunt him

He doesn’t fall in love often, but when he does it happens fast and hard

When he does love someone he wants nothing more than to absolutely smother them with affection of various different kinds, physical and verbal

Extras:

He eats mostly meat, but won’t turn down the chance to nibble on a variety of other things

He’s ticklish

He has three biological children, carried to term by 2 humans

He has both ear lobes and both nipples pierced, and has several nautical tattoos
