“Come on, Marinette,” said Kim, “You’re only cold because you aren’t getting your blood pumping. Race me to the end of the bridge and back!”

“She can’t run in all those layers,” Chloe laughed. “You’re just looking for an easy win.”

Marinette didn’t protest. It was hard to run in her coat and boots, and she was really tired. A river excursion is the last thing she wanted first thing in the morning.

“I think we should take a photo!” Said Lila, “for memories! It’s not every day we get out of the school building with our friends!” Marinette was instantly suspicious.

But it seemed like no one else was. “What a wonderful idea, Lila! See? The Seine can bring out so much inspiration in us. I hope everyone is tapping into this goldmine!”

Everyone organized themselves by shortest to tallest, with most of the boys in the back and most of the girls in the front. Lila, being unnaturally tall, and wearing huge wedges, was among the boys in the back.

“Marinette, you should sit on the railing so you don’t get lost in the back,” said Lila.

“I���m good,” replied Marinette, cautious as ever.

“No no, that’s a great idea!” Said Rose. “You’re just a little too tall for the front, and too short for the back. Sitting on the railing would be perfect!”

Before she could protest, Marinette was lifted by Ivan to sit along the rail. “Just be careful,” she warned. “You know how my balance is.”

“We won’t let you fall, Marinette!” Kim assured. She wanted to believe them. She wanted to trust them. But too many times, luck just wasn’t on her side. So when Miss Bustier yelled “cheese!” And Lila raised her hands to pose, Marinette found one of Lila’s hands smacking her in the face. She reeled backwards and no one was quick enough to stop her fall. Marinette plummeted down into the frozen water. Her back hit the ice, which knocked all the air from her. If that wasn’t enough, her puffy jacket and other multiple layers absorbed water like sponges. Even kicking kept her from moving. She was going to drown here, from a cruel prank from a classmate. She would die at the bottom of the stinky, sludgy river. Warmth caressed her face, and tender softness pressed to her mouth. Something moist parted her lips and air rushed into her lungs. She blinked then, realizing that she wasn’t going to die. Huge green eyes stared back at her. Eyes of a strange creature, with slitted pupils and lime sclera. She let out all her fresh air in a gasp of bubbles.

"-!" Riddle Roseheart? He knows he's in Octavinalle, but even Adrian can be impressed by one of the top students who isn't involved in his dorm.

The merman took his hands, shaking them to tell him that he was excited to meet him. However, it's clear that his voice was completely gone as he mouths the words 'hello!' as if on instinct.

When manners got to him, he reached for his notebook to write in it and show to him.

"I can't believe I get to work on this project with a Houswarden! I'm Adrien, it's very nice to meet you!"

Yan GB Little Mermaid who is obviously the youngest merman prince of Atlantica amongst his six older brothers. He is the pride and joy of Queen Tritania, with his enchanting beauty and melodic singing voice. He would be titled the best singer in Sebastian's choir if he ever showed up to the practices and concerts. His aloof nature keeps him plenty distracted to ever participate in things that happen around the kingdom.

Yan GB Little Mermaid who collects trinkets from ship wrecks especially anything that was shiny. He absolutely adores the treasures left behind by the humans. His seagull friend tries to tell him what things are, but nothing the bird brain ever says is accurate. It doesn't matter to Adrien though. As long as something he's found has a name and an explanation for its use then he doesn't mind.

Yan GB Little Mermaid whose wonder for humans is endless like the sea's horizon. Even his secret treasure trove of abandoned human items could encompass this boundless curiosity he harbors. Even when his mother finds out about his surface visits, ending up with him being banned from ever doing such things in the future, he couldn't be stopped.

Yan GB Little Mermaid who finds you one night when you were on a ship with pirates who he assumed were your friends. His same seagull friend had pointed you out of the group. Seeing you dance around and the music being played was enchanting. Your smile was infectious and put him into a daydream like state. Maybe if he sang, you would be just as enchanted by him.

Yan GB Little Mermaid who finds himself getting caught up in a small fantasy of him impressing you with his voice that he's been praised for endlessly. The very voice that was the pride of the very Queen of the Sea. He is so stuck in his daydreaming that he doesn't notice or hear the loud splash of something entering the deep ocean.

Yan GB Little Mermaid who realizes that you're not on the ship anymore. He looks around frantically, wondering if you were just a hallucination he made up. But when he sees bubbles rising up to the top of the sea, he knows exactly where you are. His heart drops, and he frantically dives under the water to swim after you. He tries his best to bring you up to the surface as quick as possible so you don't drown. The whole night he's focused on you and swimming you back to the closest beach he knows. Which happens to be the beach of your kingdom. Your palace is sat on the seaside cliff off in the distance.

Yan GB Little Mermaid who admires your beauty as you're unconscious on the warm sand. His fish friend, Flounder, and Sebastian watch with great caution. His seagull friend, Scuttle, also joins as he tries to assess if you're still alive or not. Adrien watches you with amazement. He's always wanted to be close to a human. He's never seen one as beautiful as you, and he saved you. He's in love with you.

Yan GB Little Mermaid who brings a gentle hand to brush back your wet locks. He opens his mouth and starts to sing sweetly. You blink slowly, and you think you see a man in front of you with vibrant red hair singing to you. As Adrien sees that you're waking up he hurries off back into the ocean, leaving you confused. As you arise, you look out at the large ocean in front of you. You were humming the tune that you had awoken too. In your mind, you thought the song was sung to you by angels. Little did you know the merman that saved you was all giddy that you were humming his song.

Yan GB Little Mermaid who becomes love struck and lovesick all at the same time. All he can think about is you. All his dreams involve you. He swims around everywhere with a half lidded dreamy look. His brothers immediately caught on to what was wrong with him. Adrien was always humming to himself with a dazed look. When Queen Tritania see's her youngest son acting like this she becomes worried. His brothers had to explain that Adrien was in love.

Yan GB Little Mermaid whose fish friend helps with Adrien's infatuation with you by finding things that you had drunkenly dropped over board when you were partying with your pirate friends. How did the two know that these objects were yours? Your initials, or last name, were carved into everything. It was mostly due to your boredom. He handles everything with care and has a special spot in his secret cavern for all your items.

Yan GB Little Mermaid who becomes even more absent from his duties and events than before. He's too busy swimming up to the beach in hopes of catching even just a glimpse of you. If you aren't there, he'd just rat to Flounder about things he wanted to do with you.

Yan GB Little Mermaid whose mother tries to use Sebastian as a babysitter for her youngest. Sebastian tries his best but Adrien avoids and evades the old crab way too well. It doesn't take Sebastian long to discover the merman's secret human treasure trove, however. Adrien catches the crab and has him swear to secrecy not to tell his mother.

Yan GB Little Mermaid who has a huge fight with his mother once she found out about his human obsession. She had thought she told him not to go to the surface anymore but of course Adrien didn't listen. Even when his brothers heard the fight going on they did nothing to intervene lest they face the wrath of Queen Tritania. Angry, Adrien swam out of the palace with his mind full of upset thoughts. Luckily, the Sea Witch's trusted pets saw and decided to “help” this poor unfortunate soul.

Yan GB Little Mermaid who is ignorant as he is led to the Sea Witch's liar. The eels promise him that the Sea Witch will make all his fantasies and dreams come true. Adrien is so excited, he doesn't realize that he's being followed by Flounder and Sebastian. Once Adrien is approached by the Sea Witch, he is offered quite a deal. A pair of human legs in exchange for his beloved voice. He is very quick to agree, he doesn't even take into consideration the consequences.

Yan GB Little Mermaid who is so happy and excited abuot the possibility of meeting you properly that he completely forgets that he doesn't have his gills anymore. Sebastian and Flounder are quick to help Adrien swim up to the surface so he can breath. He ends up washing up on the very beach he met you on. He sat on the sand, naked. Scuttle flies up, noticing the familair red head. The seagull helps give Adrien some advice and helps dress him in a torn sail.

Yan GB Little Mermaid who sees you running along the beach. He's so excited he practically runs to tackle you ina hug. You're startled by the sudden contact, but the familair red hair catches you offgaurd. Vague memories of the day you were saved from drowning resurface in your mind. You help him off the sandy ground and offer to take him to your castle, thinking he was a victim of a shipwreck nearby. He nods excitedly and takes your hand. Sebastian decides to go with Adrien by riding on his shoulder.

Yan GB Little Mermaid who is so grateful that you're being so kind to him. The maids give him a bath which is so fun. He didn't know humans could make artificial bubbles. He was also so flustered when the maids give him clothes you used to wear. He shows Sebastian with a huge smile on his face. At dinner, Adrien is quick to take a seat next to you and flaunts the clothes he's wearing to you.

Yan GB Little Mermaid who clings to your arm as you try to eat. He's so fascinated by all the familiar items he had found in shipwrecks. He wonders if you'd be fascinated by his treasure trove. He reaches for his fork and starts to brush his hair with it like he had been taught by Scuttle before. He pauses when he hears your laughter. He felt so embarrassed that you were laughing at him. He was going to stop but much to his excitement you started to copy him. He's so happy. Please let him brush your hair, it's like a dream come true to him. He foes to bed so happy that he completely forgets the curse.

Yan GB Little Mermaid who spends the next day with you. He clings to you and tries to quell his jealousy when other people look at you or even try to talk to you. He chases them off with a glare, however. You take him to a secret river that had a wooden row boat. It was a private boat ride with just the two of you. You row him to a private cove hidden by the leaves of a huge willow tree. Here you learn his name from an unknown whisper in your ear. Then you slowly start to talk about things you liked. He so badly wants to respond. All he can do is nod. When the two of you are knocked over, you're quick to scoop him into your arm and carry him out of the cove.

Yan GB Little Mermaid who's all blushy when you two get back to the castle. You carry him to his room, dried him off with this fluffy thing called a towel, got him new clothes you commissioned just for him, and offered to stay with him for the night. He felt so special as you personally cared for him rather than sending the maids too. He fell even harder. You two ended up cuddling that night. He only had one more day to kiss you.

Yan GB Little Mermaid who tries his best on the final day to woo you and get you to kiss him. He needs you too so he can be with you forever. So he can be a human forever. He dresses all cute. Well he tries. He follows you around all day, clinging onto your arm and refusing to let go whenever you ask him too. It ends up working in his favor really well because you do end up giving him a small peck on his lips. You told him it was a reward for his help that day.

Yan GB Little Mermaid who becomes all flustered and lets out a verbal squeak which makes you startled. So he can talk? He's so happy that he got his voice back and can finally tell you EVERYTHING! He starts with how he saved you and that he was a merman that was cursed into being a human with a deal. He played into the damsel in distress bit hard!

Yan GB Little Mermaid who ends up staying with you after his huge confession. He's just a roommate now. He didn't quite understand the concept, and he desperately wanted to marry you right away, but you had a desire to build a meaningful relationship with him. It confused Adrien so much. It also had upset him. No matter how hard he tried to push, you were firm in your boundary. He reluctantly accepted your terms. He wanted to understand human customs and this was a good way in doing so. That's what he told himself.

Yan GB Little Mermaid who sees you with another man. He doesn't know why but this man is so familiar to him. And he's just as helpless as Adrien was when he first became human. He watched as your hands held the arms of this filthy stranger. It should be his arms that you're holding on too. That's when it hits him. He knows this man! He won't let this stupid Sea Witch ruin his promised happily ever after with you.

ML Fanfic Recs for 2023: 5K - 10K words

So I’ve been going through and adding particularly good fics I’ve read throughout the year. Only Complete fics, of course. Enjoy!

Plagg eats Destruction while Tikki eats Creation. They choose not to tell their Holders exactly what that means.

Ladybug’s partner joins with Hawk Moth and she can’t figure out why. Not at first, anyway.

Adrien had started expecting the family breakfasts. He had NOT been expecting his father to collapse in the middle of one.

Adrien and Marinette both vaguely remember young playmates from when they were kids. Their first friend. Shame they didn’t remember each other’s names.

Marinette’s itching to win a prize for beating a merfolk in a race. Thankfully, a merman, Chat Noir, decides to challenge her. Pity that Adrien was busy that day.

Adrien finds a tiny, mousy guest in his new home, and makes a new friend.

Marinette helps lead a revolution to overthrow King Adrien with the help of her most trusted ally, Chat Noir. 

Ladybug and Chat Noir find a toddler wandering around during an akuma attack. Who could her parents be?

Chat Noir wrote a tweet mocking himself as Adrien. This totally does not come back to bite him in any way.

An akuma swapped Marinette’s and Chat Noir’s bodies. Marinette AS Marinette, not as Ladybug. This causes some problems.

They didn’t remember each other. The hospital told them there’d been an accident—brain damage—but Alya had told them the truth, later. Who’d they’d been to each other. What they’d given up, and why.

But even with their memories of each other gone, Adrien and Marinette are still inextricably tied together—by law, by their social circles, and by their hearts.

And in the apartment they share, there's only one bed.

Yep, it’s the “there was only one bed” trope XD! I especially love how it was used here, how Adrien and Marinette are strangers now but they had a whole life together, and they pine for each other even without remembering, and how Marinette just can’t believe how in love with her Adrien is even though he doesn’t remember her. I loved the emotional turmoil the two of them went through together in the fic, and the resolution, it’s great!

They don't explain that to their holders.

I just found the whole idea here fascinating. Basically, Plagg and Tikki prefer to eat things that align with their concept somehow, and even get boosts from them. They decide not to explain the details to their Holders though (just to mess with them I think) which prompts Adrien and Marinette to both do a lot of experimentation to figure out what their kwami likes to eat the most.

Working their way up to a settled adulthood, Marinette and Adrien, now 23, gain a reason to believe that they are expecting—way earlier than they ever planned. Still unwed, it evokes a revelation on Adrien’s behalf.

Was it time to take the next step forward?

I loved the emotions here, how Adrien and Marinette reacted to the results of the pregnancy test, how complicated their feelings about it were - and how it prompted Adrien to take action. It’s a really sweet fic!

When the superhero duo takes on another exhausting fight against an akuma, Chat Noir does what he never hesitates to do and takes a hit for his partner. The problem being: neither of them knew what power the akuma possessed.

That is... until he is transported into the future. More specifically, to his friend Marinette's wedding.

Ah I love time travel fics! Older!Marinette’s surprised, Younger!Adrien’s bewildered, and Older!Adrien is off knowing exactly what happened and giving his younger self some subtle heads-up. 

It gives Adrien something to look forward to, to cling onto, through bad days in the future at least!

I’m shocked I haven’t seen more of this sort of thing, with Adrien finding out his father’s Monarch via seeing the Cataclysm wound. I love that Alya gets involved in this, being the person Adrien runs into after fleeing the room, and then Adrien getting to talk things out with Gabriel and Nathalie. Thankfully Gabriel is at least not completely incapable of being reasoned with here, or things could have gone worse than they did. It’s a nice little read, though with an ambiguous ending (at least at the time when I write this).

Marinette and Adrien give up their Miraculous. Ladybug and Chat Noir never meet again.

This one’s an angsty fic with a happy ending (though there is a little fluff in there as well.) Adrien and Marinette get together and have a family together, while Scarabella and Kitty Noire continue to fight Monarch for the next decade. But it still eats at Marinette that she never found out what happened to Chat Noir, that he never said anything before they both vanished, and Chat reappearing during an akuma attack when Kitty Noire was taken out of commission doesn’t help with that - especially since he won’t leave her head and she needs to commit herself to her family, doesn’t want to be torn by his presence. She cares about her family too much. 

Ladybug and Chat Noir never meet again... but there are other ways for them to meet up and talk things out.

She thought “you and me against the world” had sounded like lopsided odds before, when she hadn’t even dreamed “you against me” was a possibility. Or maybe she had dreamed it, but at least in those dreams he’d had cold blue eyes and a stark white mask.

The villain she’d fought today had looked at her through her partner’s own bright green eyes.

It wasn’t meant to be this way.

Short and sweet Sentiadrien enemies canon divergence fic here! I adored Marinette finding out why her kitty seemed to have “betrayed” her, and the righteous anger on his behalf once she figured out that it wasn’t of his own free will. Her comforting Adrien about it was just... really good. It’s a Hawkmoth Defeat fic too, so the immediate aftermath gets covered as well. Adrien needs a hug.

Ever since the last Mr Pigeon attack over nine months ago, Hawkmoth has fallen off the face of the earth, seemingly for good. There’s never been a better chance for an identity reveal—but after keeping her identity a secret for so many years, Marinette feels incredibly nervous about one.

When Chat Noir accidentally finds Ladybug working at a café, Alya comes up with a brilliant idea. If Ladybug and Chat Noir interact regularly in a civilian setting, surely they’ll move towards an identity reveal without outside interference?

Adrien Never Goes To Public School Coffee Shop AU here! It’s funny how he clocks Marinette as being Ladybug IMMEDIATELY. And then after discussing it for awhile, decide to make a bit of a game of the identity reveal, having Chat come in on pre-determined days and seeing whether Ladybug can figure out who she is, all while they get to know each other, even if in passing. 

Love the other Miraculous heroes making cameos as well, Marinette seems annoyed that Nino cosplaying as Carapace actually doesn’t tip anyone off XD.

Nothing Else Matters by LiquefiedStars

Marinette couldn’t figure out Chat Noir. He was supposed to be her partner, but instead ended up working for Hawk Moth. Still, her heart betrayed her and when a strong connection forms between them, Ladybug goes to Chat looking for answers, finding out more than she bargained for.

Sentiadrien enemies AU fic! He never wanted to fight against her, but Gabriel caught him before he could transform for the first time, and with his father using his Amoks against him, he had no choice. 

I like that there’s a solid explanation for why Fu let Adrien keep his Miraculous even though he’s been working against Ladybug, I don’t often see explanations for that that I’m satisfied with.

An akuma that transfers people's consciousnesses into other universes hits Ladybug, sending her into a world where everything is the same... but instead of earrings, she's wearing a ring on one hand! She's only just arrived in this universe, but already Plagg seems to have gone missing. It's up to Marinette to figure out what happened before she's sent back home!

This fic takes place in the future, after Season 5, but it does not contain any leaks or major spoilers. Please keep the comment section spoiler-free, too!

This is really cute, Marinette gets transported into a world where she’s married to Adrien and is really confused as to why and how they got married at sixteen. Adrien’s just an adorable puppy who thinks his wife is the most amazing person in the world!

Adrien, Marinette, Nino and Alya have a group assignment about how the past has shaped them into the people they are today, but they’ll make a discovery that’ll send them searching for answers.

This fic is adorable, Adrien, Marinette, and Nino uncover that they all went to the same preschool together, with Adrien and Marinette immediately latching onto each other, Adrien being the knight to Marinette’s princess, and also making friends with Nino. Sadly he was pulled after two weeks, but it made quite an impression on him.

A Friendship Not Abandoned (Just Delayed) by @nomolosk

Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrien Agreste first met as tiny little kids, but then Adrien had to move away. When they finally meet again, will they even remember each other, much less become friends again?

Poor Adrien keeps on saying or doing just the wrong thing to give Marinette the impression that he’s a bully like Chloe when he’s not, and he keeps desperately trying to fix it. So a bit of an enemies au in that way, since Marinette doesn’t like him much. He does gradually manage to convince her that he’s a good person though.

It's Adrien's birthday, and there's an akuma attack. Luckily, Ladybug and Chat Noir are there to save the day! Even if they're not the heroes that we're familiar with...

Not so much a kwami swap as an another au entirely.

Same title as one of my own fics, funnily enough! Though entirely different premise. This is a Gabenath fic, with Gabriel as Chat Noir and Nathalie as Ladybug, complete with a lovesquare and some unspecified other person as Hawk Moth. In this version, Gabriel and Emilie had some terrible fights and were separated, with Gabriel realizing along the way that he’d been a distant father and working to rectify that, he’s a pretty decent person here. I could actually kind of see this being a feasible path Gabriel could have gone down, if he wasn’t so desperate to revive Emilie and hadn’t gone so far to try to distance himself from who he was and where he came from back before he met Emilie and started changing to fit in with the upper class.

He clutched his chest, feeling his lungs burn  as his body started to give out beneath him. No. Not now. Not this time, when he was so close.

He wrenched his arm back, striking with the other as he called his sword to his hand, fire and lightning and ice tearing through his nerves as he did, but finally, finally, the resistance gave way and he stumbled backwards.

Without looking, he turned and ran, calling a portal to appear before him. He fell through it, landing on a cold, hard floor in utter darkness. He could still hear shouting over the rushing in his ears, every part of his body failing at once, and before he could be pursued, before he could collapse any further, he forced raspy words through his torn, aching throat.

"Plagg, Tikki, unify!"

The world went blessedly, eerily silent.

Emotional Mountain Ranges by @liiinerle

After Zoé's attempted romantic confession to Marinette is interrupted by an incensed Chloé and Audrey Bourgeois, she's left distraught and adrift, a crying mess in an alleyway far from home. Ladybug saves her from the incoming akuma, and tries to help her back on her feet - and Zoé wonders what she could possibly have done to earn this much attention from a superhero...

Lovely Zoenette fic here! I especially like how Marinette talks to Zoe, reassures her that she’s good enough, that she (as Ladybug) isn’t as perfect and composed as she thinks, and just... tries to get Zoe to have more confidence in herself. It’s mostly from Zoe’s perspective too, which I like since there aren’t a lot of Zoe POV fics.

The Mer-Human Race by @rosie-b

Bringing her hand closer to his lips, Adrien tried to plant a kiss on it, but Marinette pulled away before his lips could touch her.

“Save it for your girlfriend,” she said teasingly. “Or do you still not have one yet?”

Adrien smirked and crossed his arms.

“It’s a girl,” he said. “And I know her in real life. That’s all you get. Now, let’s get back to planning, shall we? We have a mermaid to beat.”

Lovely world-building here! Merfolk and humans have had a treaty for a long time, so there’s a tradition where merfolk can challenge humans to a race, and whoever wins gets to ask for a reasonable sort of reward (in Marinette’s case, she wants to be allowed to captain a ship at a younger age than is usually allowed). Alya, Nino, and Adrien are naturally very encouraging towards Marinette, and luckily for her, a nice merman going by the name of Chat Noir shows up and challenges her to a race...

Yeah you can see where this is going XD. It’s fun, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I love the description of some of the plants involved, and what they mean, what they represent. If you want a fic that delves more in Sabrina’s character and her relationship with Chloe, this is a solid choice.

“You’re looking awfully deep in thought today, minou.” Ladybug’s gloved hand stroked over his hair and Chat Noir closed his eyes with an unstable breath.

He got like this sometimes. Lately, it had been getting worse.

Or: Gabriel likes using the rings to order his son around. After a while, it starts having effects on Chat Noir as well. (The more often Gabriel commands Adrien to act a certain way, the more it gets ingrained in his mentality. He suffers because of it.)

This is a gorgeous fic. Adrien’s been puppeted around, forced to obey orders for reasons he doesn’t understand, for so long, so often that a lot of times his own body doesn’t even feel like his. A lot of residual orders keep on bubbling up and stopping him from doing what he wants to do, and he just... doesn’t understand why. Considering how Adrien looked in Pretension when Gabriel forced him to go to his room so he could talk to Marinette alone, and how desperately Adrien tried to head back there but couldn’t make himself open the door, how terrified and confused he’d seemed, I think his feelings here, his mindset, is pretty close to canon.

I love Colt’s characterization here, how we see his mindset, his beliefs, and even what made him the way he is. We have a limited amount of knowledge about him in canon, only having the play Felix and Kagami put on to go off of, but myladynoire made good use of it! I’m glad Felix got some closure here as well.

This is really cute, with Emma and Isaac being worried about Adrien supposedly cheating on Marinette and wanting to talk to Ladybug to stop her from dating Chat Noir. That’s not all that’s going on here, though - Isaac’s actually adopted, but he and Adrien are still related, which puts an interesting twist on the tale. There’s a reason he’s especially sympathetic to the fact that Adrien being Chat Noir means he would have had to fight his own father...

Ladybug and Marinette have both been acting strangely since Monarch's defeat, and Chat Noir would give anything to know why—to be able to help them. He just...didn't expect his answers to come when Ladybug drags him to his father's statue in the middle of the night along with a bag full of spray paint.

If you felt unsatisfied with Adrien being left in the dark about Monarch, with Ladybug lying about Gabriel being a hero, this is a great fic to read. Marinette’s breaking down keeping this secret, seeing people treat Gabriel as the hero she told people he was, until she finally snaps and has to do SOMETHING, has to tell SOMEONE the truth. 

Which Chat takes pretty well! He knows how persuasive his father could be, and he’s mostly just relieved at finally hearing someone say that Gabriel wasn’t a hero. It’s still a lot to cope with though.

So this is a multimedia type fic showing various online conversations and things that would likely be going on in Miraculous Paris. It doesn’t really have a coherent narrative per se, and is more like a series of vignettes. It’s a lot of fun, like there’s a section going over Andre’s ice cream reviews, Alix talking with Max about how she’s worried about Alim falling down conspiracy rabbit holes, an image of the most popular google search terms for Adrien, all sorts of things! It must’ve taken a lot of work and I think it’s worth a look.

This is an intriguing story, with a somewhat open ending. I don’t want to spoil too much about it - the plot hook in the summary should already give you a pretty good idea of the premise. It is a little strange seeing LADYBUG pushing for an identity reveal and making jokes during akuma fights, but given what’s happened, I could see why she’d try to do things that made her think of Chat.

He shouldn't be hesitating when a chance of a life time presented itself to him. He should not be looking for excuses and reasonings as to why spending another twenty or so years fighting this woman rather than pleasing his father and giving his mother another chance at life was not such a bad idea after all.

Ah, I love a good enemies au! Even when they’re enemies, Chat is unwilling to hurt Ladybug. Though honestly, he makes himself out to be more of a villain than he actually is, it’s pretty obvious to everyone that he’s not trying as hard as he could to get her earrings. There’s very good reason for that.

This is adorable. Ladybug and Chat Noir find a toddler wandering around and try to find her parents, to no avail, so they decide to take care of her (well Ladybug said she was gonna leave her with Marinette, but you know what that really means). Of course Bunnix had to come to collect her since she was displaced from time, but neglected to say who her parents were...

Anyway this was adorable, and I loved the explanation for how, exactly, the little girl ended up in the wrong time period.

I love this glimpse at what might have been going on with Felix back in Shadybug and Claw Noir’s world, I did wonder what might have been going on with him. Poor kid, he managed to have it even worse than he did in canon. I really loved seeing his interactions with Luka, the Couffaines rebel through kindness it seems!

This one’s a pretty unique follow-up to the season 5 finale! I love Alya and Nadja investigating to try and figure out what happened with Monarch and exposing the truth, people deserve to know.

It’s been about a week since Shadybug and Claw Noir’s goody-two shoes alternate universe counterparts convinced them to betray the Supreme and join the Resistance. And while they are determined to be better… It hasn’t been easy. While both Shadybug and Claw Noir have a lifetime of problems to untangle if they want to be good people, they realize a new look doesn’t magically make you a nice person. As if that weren’t hard enough to deal with, the two ex-Villains struggle with defining what their new relationship might be.

I love the two of them talking things out, and struggling. Shadybug in particular is still very prickly and prone to making snide comments about Adrien, even though she doesn’t really know him, and she still hasn’t totally come to terms with her own true feelings about Claw Noir. Though by the end they um. Figure that out, I guess you could say XD.

Tomoe keeps telling Kagami about the importance of her heritage, but refuses to tell her what that heritage is. When Kagami looks it up for herself, she finds a lot of interesting information, a lot of frustration, and a deep and burning question - which Tomoe refuses to help her answer.

This is a Kagami character study, with Kagami questioning her mother’s actions, but knowing that standing up to her is a no-win proposition. It doesn’t help that D’Argencourt’s mirroring some aspects of her mother’s behavior, with being upset if she doesn’t fight well, but also being upset if she beats him. There’s no right answer here, which leads her to take out her frustration on others. Luckily, Marinette’s there to calm her down, to talk things out with her.

I love the focus here on how people just assume what Adrien’s thinking and feeling and act on his behalf, without actually waiting to see what HE wants, and Adrien’s growing frustration. How they create a version of him in their heads, but don’t care to check with reality to see whether he actually wants their “defense”.

When the bottle cap comes to a stop dead center on Nino, Adrien’s both relieved and somehow more anxious.

His first kiss - not his actual first kiss, but still kinda his first kiss - the first kiss he will remember, will be with someone he deeply cares about.

But Adrien also cares what Nino thinks of him, so what if he’s a terrible kisser?

Nino offers him a reassuring smile, and he relaxes. Adrien glances at Alya for permission, and she just shoos him towards Nino.

Adrien turns to Nino, leaning closer. If his stomach had been squirming before, it now feels like a half dozen Kwamis have taken up residence in his gut. But Adrien doesn’t hesitate. He blocks out the presence of all of his friends watching, and instead focuses on Nino - like Nino is a stage partner in a photoshoot.

Except kissing Nino is nothing like a photoshoot.

Adrien kisses Nino in a game of Spin the Bottle, and then neither can stop thinking about it. Alya really likes how flustered her boyfriend is by all this. Marinette though, can't handle it and keeps running away.

This is a great Alya X Adrien X Nino X Marinette poly fic! I love them all talking out their feelings and realizing new things about themselves. Alya’s instrumental and bringing everyone together, though she, herself, is also nervous about confessing to her longstanding crush XD

This is a really good glimpse of this AU, I really love the Ladrien (Lovedrien?) especially, with her talking out her conundrum with Adrien.

Bad news: the akuma’s power meant she was now in Chat Noir’s body, and Chat Noir was in her body. Her body, which was currently still Marinette.

Ah, I love a good body swap. This is set while Adrien and Marinette are dating, so he can’t help flirting with Marinette a little, even in these circumstances - which is a bit of a problem since Marinette doesn’t realize he’s her boyfriend. And also they’re in each other’s bodies, which makes it feel weird.

And then there’s the whole “someone is gonna need to use the Ladybug Miraculous” problem. It’s not as if Chat KNOWS that he currently has her Miraculous in his earlobes...

I love this. Adrien needs very little prompting to jump out of windows, heck he’ll do it with NO prompting, it’s hilarious XD. It’s really not that surprising though, considering how we’ve seen Adrien dive from the top of his rock-climbing wall onto his couch.

So Adrien discovers he’s a sentimonster and immediately runs to Marinette for support. It’s as cute and angsty as you’d expect. She is, of course, very supportive of him. Also some discussion of Gabriel being abusive, since both she and Nino had been trying to get Adrien to see that. Especially with how, exactly, Adrien found out he’s a sentimonster. He can relate a little better to Felix’s experiences now than is healthy, I’ll just say.

But sometimes Tigress is surprised just how close she is with her partner. Sometimes she tries not to feel too guilty thinking about it.

There’s some nice Julerose here! I love them kinda getting into a lovesquare with each other, though it’s not as much of a problem as it is in canon since it’s reciprocal in every relationship and they’re both down for a poly. It’s fun, and I love the “Luka attempting to woo some of his love interests” plot going on in the background XD.

Adrien is the youngest of 7 sons by his parents, his mother dying when he was a child due to an attack from unknowing humans who were hunting fish. His father grew furious of humans and banned all merfolk from going above land again, aside from the annual ceremony for all merfolk - the land ceremony.

To learn of the outside world, merfolk once they reach teenage years were to swim to the surface and watch how humans live from afar. Although, his father had taken this as propaganda to expose how horrible the human world was. None really opposed this, except his grandmother who tried to teach Adrien that the human world was a fascinating place.

Exploring the land for the first time from his ceremony, he came across a ship full of bright lights shooting into the sky and music he'd never heard before. Ignoring his father's advice to see specific humans, he climbed atop the ship to watch everyone dance and sing to their hearts content.

It was while watching with curiosity that he spotted a handsome human prince. His heart skipped a beat at the sight of him, and he swore that he'd never met anyone so gorgeous in his entire life.

Yet tragedy would strike when a storm began to brew in the sky, and this storm would take down the ship. Not wanting to see this human male die, as he watched him sink into the water, he rescued him by pulling him to shore. In awe of him, he vowed that he would someday see him again and be a part of his wonderful world. Except he fled the moment the man began to wake up on the beach.

Desperate to be a part of the human world, especially after seeing how carefree humans could live compared to the strict or dangerous seas, Adrien began to look for a way to come to land.

He personally found a seawitch within a shady coral cave. The witch made an offer all too familiar to residents of the sea who practiced magic, he would have to exchange his voice for the ability to walk on land. Although Adrien had always posessed magic, specifically through water manipulation, he wasn't strong enough to make a spell or potion to turn him human like students at magical schools. The full deal was that Adrien would exchange his voice for human legs. Should he fail to find love, he'll turn to sea foam the morning after his love proclaims he loves someone else.

He would agree and made the journey to join land, leaving behind his family. Coincedentally found by the man he saved, he found out he was a prince and he was kind enough to offer him a place to stay. Unable to talk, he desperately tried to tell the prince who he was, but something had always come up. Even worse? No matter what Adrien did, the prince did not return the affection.

Due to his skills in water magic, he would be appointed an apprentice mage in the palace, learning from the head mage. At least it'd meant he'd be close to the prince, except he still would only treat him as a friend.

The worst would come when the prince announced he found the one who rescued him by the shore, a pretty shy and sweet village girl. Adrien was devastated, and hurt that the prince really wasn't the man he thought he'd love forever.

Invited to their betrothal party, Adrien looked out onto the deck and played with the water on the sea until he managed to create sea foam, realizing he'd become that in the morning. Suddenly, his brothers would pop up from the ocean.

All six of his brothers had bald or short hair, explaining they all sold their hair to the sea witch in exchange to turn the terms of the contract. He wouldn't turn to sea foam in the morning, but the only way he could have his voice back is if he found true love again.

Unable to thank his brothers, he cried upon hearing he would be allowed to live. Feeling defeated at love, at least he'd take this as a second chance to find other ways to get his voice back.

On land, and doing his best to ignore the prince, he flew himself into his studies to learn about other types of magic. It was his hard studying that the mage in the castle informed Night Ravens College about Adrien, where he was accepted and placed into the Octavinelle dorm.

Adrien currently attends Night Ravens College as a student. He is completely mute so the only way he can communicate is through sign language and letters. Although his marks are not particularly high compared to others, he studies hard and truly does hope he'll be able to get his voice back. He doesn't know if he can realy believe in true love anymore, but maybe a part of him hopes that he will someday.

Adrien is a very sweet man who will do anything for anyone. He's especially curious of human life and knowing that other worlds exist beyond just the one he grew up in and the college he's attending. To communicate with others, he'll often either sign or keep a notebook on hand to write to people. This does leave him with quite a large notebooks he needs to talk with others throughout the day though.

Due to his loss of voice, Adrien is unable to properly develop a signature spell. This is particularly what makes him lacking in contrast to other students. However, if Adrien were to regain his voice and practice a signature spell, it would be called Under The Sea. The spell allows Adrien to manipulate a large mass of water to bind someone into a bubble. Although weak, it's a great spell for apprehending others for a short period of time and specifically land creatures such as humans and animals.

Something shimmered in the alcove, between the old bottles and broken ship parts. Curiously Marinette squinted into the darkness . . . an . . . Orb?

The glass surface was just catching the light of the afternoon sun. Reaching forwards she plucked the fist sized sphere from its nestled perch. The second it passed into the light there was a flash of frantic movement and she nearly dropped the orb in surprise. Sparkling black and green scales spun wildly within the glass before two tiny black clawed hands slammed onto the inner surface. A face with bright green eyes, framed in a halo of golden hair, stared up at her in slitted suspicion.

Land and Sea- Chapter 13

It was five days of water-breathing before Adrien could manage even the air-breathing transformation again, and in that time he’d gotten very tired of the confined space of the Dupain-Cheng’s bathtub. The aerator and industrial sized filter Marinette had bought kept his water clean and breathable (he did manage to manually filter the, uh, larger waste and deposit it in the toilet himself), and she checked the water levels twice a day to see if he needed a top-up, and of course they were giving him plenty to eat… but it was so cramped. 

Not to mention that, since it was the only bathroom with a toilet that they had access to, he’d had to get used to being even more shut in with a curtain every time one of them had to use it, and even then it was embarrassing for everyone involved. Fortunately, Marinette had laboriously explained via a small whiteboard that they had a shower cabinet installed in one of the bakery’s stockrooms on the ground floor, so at least they were able to keep clean. It had apparently been a gift or prize of some kind, given to them by her paternal grandmother.

But he felt like such an inconvenience every time the door to the bathroom opened. He wanted nothing more than to get his transformations back, but he knew it would take time for that part of his brain to heal enough that he could use it again. Even then, it would probably take more time for him to be able to hold a full transformation for more than an hour or two.

With that in mind, Adrien began trying to teach Marinette mer signs. He used first the whiteboard, and then some bathtub crayons Marinette offered him with an amused smile, to teach her greetings and thanks and how to ask where it was acceptable to eliminate waste. He also taught her the signs that were names of things, like the fish her family fed him and his own name as well as hers in sign, along with Chloe’s and his own family members.

Marinette was a good student. Although she was often too tired to do much more than sign him a greeting and the name of his dinner at the start of the evening, once they’d eaten she would perk up a bit and he could try to have a little conversation with her. He began peppering in unknown signs, to see if she would pick up their meaning within the context of the other things he said. Sometimes she did, and sometimes he would have to explain using the crayons. But the main point was that she was learning and she would be better prepared for the visit they had planned, even if that was months away.

And finally, on the sixth day of his confinement to the bathtub, he finally managed the air-breathing transformation. He’d been testing it first thing in the morning after he woke up, and it finally worked! He couldn’t hold it very long- he started getting a headache after only a few minutes- but it worked!

i’ve wanted to write merman!adrien forever. nino is his dorky friend that figures out he’s a fish. gabriel & nathalie are the ones that find him in their boat, but emilie is the mermaid. marinette is his girlfriend that’s like “holy shit you’re a fish.” i’ll have to figure the kinks out. but i’ve really been wanting to do this au forever and think this may will be when the time has come.

He was warm, a welcoming source of heat in the cool evening waves. The touch of his lips soft and welcoming. He tasted sweet and light in comparison to the salt of the ocean, the grit of sand, and the harshness of the sea battered rocks of the shoreline. Nino pressed closer, delighting as Adrien’s arms tightened around him.

Everything was perfect. Even when their noses bumped, it was just a step towards their lips meeting once more. When their teeth clattered, it was simply a reason to smile and pull each other that much closer, so close that nothing but a whisper could pass between them.

Nino smiled at the gasp that passed Adrien’s lips as he turned, pushing him against the hard surface of the rock, their rock. His hand, still on Adrien’s cheek shifted, feeling the texture of his scales and seeing the glow and sparkle of them even with his eyes closed. But after a while, his imagination just wasn’t enough and he chanced it, opening his eyes to the beauty before him.

His hair was messy, wisps of gold and sunlight in the night, forming a halo around him as they sunk underwater. The gentle ebb and flow of the ocean waves moved against each strand. His darkened ears peeked out in the brightness and his cheekbones were further accentuated by the highlights of his scales. They shone a green iridescence that sparkled a little lighter than the colour of his eyes; eyes that were now closed whereas his mouth was slightly open in a soft pout, awaiting Nino’s touch.

So when Nino leaned back in, he took his time. His thumb ran appreciatively across Adrien’s cheek and he used his hand to tilt him just right, closing his eyes slowly just in time to see Adrien’s blink slowly back at him.

A soft gasp left the merman’s lips. “W-wow,” he smiled dreamily up at Nino, before he was silenced once more by his lips.

This time not even the cold water of the ocean could cool them. Warm, and hot, and heat sparked between them burning them up as their lips moved against one another. Adrien held Nino close. That purr resonated between them tenfold and Nino hummed in response. One arm travelled up the length of his back, sending shivers down his spine until Adrien’s hand gripped the back of Nino’s neck, pulling him in as he ran his tongue along his bottom lip.

The feeling shocked Nino for a moment, unknown and new, but oh so pleasant. Instinctively he gave chase when Adrien’s tongue pulled back. And suddenly Nino found his own tongue in the merman’s mouth. Uncertain he pressed along his palate stroking his tongue with his own and finding himself pleasantly surprised by the touch. Adrien’s grip tightened and unconsciously Nino’s flippers wrapped around the merman’s slim waist pulling him closer until their hips touched.

It was quickly too much and Nino faltered, jumping slightly, immediately pulling away, even as Adrien held him. He held his flippers as far back as he could, wishing they would disappear completely, to transform his shell into a beautiful tail worthy of Adrien’s company.

“Nino?” came a soft voice.

He flinched.

A gentle hand came up to his cheek. It was all at once something he craved, but he also felt the need to recoil away, despite his heartbeat telling him otherwise. Still, that loving touch gently guided him back to the bright green eyes before him.

“It’s okay, I want you to touch me.”

The sound out of Nino’s mouth could only best be described as a strangled squeak, one that he didn’t even have the heart to try to excuse with a clearing of his throat or half-hearted cough. Instead he seemed only able to resign himself to his fate, wishing for nothing more than to disappear within the confines of his shell.

A soft kiss brought him out from his woes.

When he glanced down at Adrien, he was surprised to see the merman’s face aglow; though not due to his gilded scales, but the deep red blush across his cheeks. Nino was sure his whole face were just as red, if not more.

“I—um, that was…” Adrien paused, bringing a hand up to his hair. “That was very nice.”  

Nino pressed his lips together, glancing down at Adrien’s mouth, missing his touch. When Adrien’s hands reached for his, he melted, easily intertwining his hands in his.

“Thanks,” was all he could muster as a reply and he immediately regretted it.

But he had no regrets for the bright, slow smile Adrien gave him in return. He had no hesitations as Adrien leaned in once more, the gentle ring of his laughter spilling between them, a song that Nino soon joined in on as they pressed their foreheads against one another, pushing away their doubts as they pushed closer towards each other.

Eventually, Nino felt the tickle of Adrien’s hair against his skin which was quickly followed by the touch of his lips on his cheek, on his nose, on his ears, and lastly, on his own lips again and again. Each kiss was followed by even more laughter as the two of them fell into a pattern of new awkward touches and happy warm smiles as together they mapped out their innermost feelings along each other’s skin.

Mermay Day Four – Prompt: Virtuoso

She was 11 when she conquered her first ship.

The question of how a miniscule girl of the uppers of upper-crust society was able to trap 47 pirates below deck and keep them there was a question that would forever be unanswered. The fact that, after the initial capture, and during the subsequent battle to keep them all there, the little princess was able to sew her own flag – from the fabric of their shirts – and then single-handedly sail herself to the nearest port to present 47 shirtless men to the kingdom for trial was, in essence, nothing short of miraculous.

"I'm just lucky, I guess!" was the girl's only response on the subject.

The captured pirates were mum on the subject. Whether this was from sheer embarrassment or from not truly knowing themselves, the people could only guess. And guess they did. The story wasn't a simple thing; the ship, a vessel of infamous history, had been long harassing people along the coastal European cities for years, building a notorious reputation that was not unfounded in dirty deeds. Princesa Marinette had been sailing with her parents to England when their vessel was overtaken, the sight already famous child causing an excitement akin to that of Pizaro's treasure to the seafaring thugs. Once she was on board with them, they wasted no time in sailing out of sight.

It was the last heist they would ever do. And though the pirates as a whole wouldn't speak of what she had done, the name "Pequeña Dama Suerte", "Little Lady Luck" became, from that time onward, the name associated with the Spanish princess.

She was 12 when she bested her mother, Queen Sabine, a renowned fighter in her own right, at fencing; 13 when she won against her father, the King, who was famous throughout Europe for his swordsmanship.

The girl was as small as she was strong…and smart. Her hands could barely grapple a longsword, but it didn't stop her from becoming adept enough with an epée to best any opponent who challenged her. They all entered laughing. They all left astounded. The general descriptions of their battles were "quick". They would tell of the way she seemed to flit around like a bug, even humming in the interims between rounds as if to round out the picture of an innocent creature who would sting at the first sign of trouble.

And sting she would.

She was 13 when she took her second ship, though it was the first one she had set out purposefully to capture.

The tales of a girl with the power of the sea and the gift of the sky became songs on the lips of sailors and lullabies to the babes of mariners. The girl they described had no knowledge that she had been painted as both a siren and an angel, an ethereal being without a name except "Ladybug". In the space of only two years, the rumors had grown into whispered myths. They transformed into stories told alongside Poseidon and Ceto, mermaids and Atlantis. Something magical to hope for…or a destructive entity to fear.

Until the ship that held Governor Bourgeois and the French colony heading to the Caribbean was recovered, Ladybug had lived in song and story. Now, though, the ethereal shown itself in corporal form; she fought like a dragon, the twin ships of the famed buccaneers downed within the hour she arrived. The ships were sunk to the bottom of the sea, along with any of the crew that had been foolish enough to stay aboard a ship set on fire. Le Grand, Bourgeois's ship, found itself suddenly armed, the colonists' weapons returned and then some. The resulting battle was short-lived; the captain was killed by the girl hero herself when he refused surrender, and the colonists found themselves neck deep in renewed heart and hope as they retook their own ship.

Marinette had sailed herself back home in Chloé's ship, explaining to her parents that she had been kidnapped and freed herself and sailed back at the earliest chance.

The only surprising part of this story was that someone would dare kidnap her in the first place.

And the fact that, somehow, she had acquired the reddest dog in existence while out on the sea.

Marinette, for her part, had to deal with being thirteen and not only experiencing the sights of war, but the repercussions of taking a man's life for the first time. It was this that persuaded the Princess of Spain to invite Governor Bourgeois and his daughter for a visit. And, when Chloé came, the only person privy to her secret, to beg her to stay.

She was 17 when she took her last voyage as Ladybug.

By now, the mask Chloé had made her on their first trip had become a staple – though the garment now had been redesigned from a torn red cloth with inked black dots into something Marinette approved of. It was leather, the side that touched her face covered with a ship-worthy canvas, the same material woven through the sides to a double tie she could fasten behind her for stability. She fingered the aged material, thinking of how the worn paint needed a touch up.

From her spot in the crow's nest, Marinette could see their last companion ship, Lady Grace, turn toward the north on their voyage home. A canon fired, the force of it resonating in Marinette's soul a little deeper than it should have. She fought the tears that came to her eyes at the finality of it.

It had been a smart outfit. After building a crew – mostly by the means of Chloé's extensive connections and ballooning from there – Chloé and Marinette (under the guise of Ladybug), took a ship, named it El Lugar de la Mariquita, The Ladybug's Spots, and became "pirates" fighting pirates in their own right.

A second canon fire.

They were "lawless" in the sense that they answered to no one, though the local governments would always turn a blind eye when the crusaders of the sea were about their business of saving souls. They never killed if it could be helped, never gleaned anything from the spoils of their battles. Within three years they had amassed two more vessels to their number. Their flagship, Ladybug's original brigantine, was more than modest in size, a merchant-looking vessel. In other words: perfect bait. The innocence of the ship was like a fishing lure for seedy sea vermin. And by the time the unsuspecting ships would realize their mistake, it would be too late. Three blasts from a canon, and then Ladybug's symbol would appear. Within moments, their companion ships, Reine des Abeilles and Lady's Grace, would come to either help, or, more likely, help clean up the pieces (Abeilles was built to pull ships, and Grace was a renovated brig with an entire floor dedicated to prison holds). Pirates grew wary of lone ships on the sea, knowing that if they came close enough, the Ladybug's colors would suddenly be hoisted, and their villainous days would be over…one way or another.

The third canon fire sounded, and Marinette – Ladybug – dissolved into the tears she had held back the entire voyage. She watched through misty eyes until Lady's Grace's dot disappeared forever into the darkness. This wasn't a goodbye to them; they would sail again, under the same spotted flag. The symbolic canon fire – their symbol – was for Ladybug herself. For when her crew next set sail, Ladybug would not be joining them.

This was Ladybug's last adventure.

But, contrary to what Marinette believed, it wasn't over yet.
