The Stolen MerPrince

Welcome to the labour of love that is this fic I wrote for @billybigbang2024!

I started with the idea for a couple of scenes then had to weave the rest of the plot around it. I created the banner (below the cut) really early on, before my fic had even been claimed.

Then @akichania made the banner above for promo week. I love both so you get both!

Summary:

Billy is pissed. There aren’t many places to stretch his tail in Hawkins, and he misses the ocean. One day, he overhears his father talking about Steve Harrington and uncovers some shocking truths about the mermaid prince his mother used to tell him stories about. Now Billy needs to convince Steve that mermaids are real and take him back to California.

Chapter 1 - a beautiful baby boy

“Mama?”

Billy flicked his tail and watched the bubbles come up to break the surface. They were floating on the bull kelp canopy, Billy’s head resting on Mama’s belly, the sun shining down on them.

“What is it, Billy Blue?” Mama asked, running her fingers through his curls. Spending time in the ocean with Mama was Billy’s favorite thing to do in the whole world. They’d found a small cove away from the tourist areas and it was their secret spot. There, they could let out their tails and forget about the human world for a bit. 

Sometimes—when they had more time because Billy's dad was away for work—they would swim down to the city under the sea, where they met merfolk like them and Mama would show him the history of their people, painted on large murals in the library.

Billy knew Mama used to work at the palace, but then something bad happened and Mama left her job. They didn't talk about it. The people they met in the deep of the ocean didn’t mention it either, but they were always happy to see Mama and Billy. 

They didn’t seem to like Billy’s dad very much, though. Billy wondered if it was because his dad was human, and sometimes not very nice. He felt bad thinking such things, but he’d heard tales about humans who did horrible things to merfolks. Mama said that was why they needed to hide the truth about their tails.

Billy flicked his tail a few more times. He liked how the sun reflected on his scales. Mama had told him the colors of his tail would change as he aged, going darker. He hoped his tail would look like hers, dark red and gold, with spots of black. Mama’s tail was so pretty.

“Can you tell me about the stolen prince?”

“Again?” Mama said with a laugh.

“Please, Mama.”

“Alright,” she said, dipping her fingers in the water and letting the drops fall on Billy’s cheek. “It was a bit over a year before you were born. After years of trying and hoping, Queen Titania finally had a child. A beautiful baby boy—”

“Like me!” Billy exclaimed with glee.

“Yes, my darling, like you.” Mama smiled and picked up Billy’s hand to give it a kiss. She kept it as she continued the story. “He had big brown eyes, and equally brown hair, and he was named Stephanos. The whole queendom rejoiced and merfolks came from all over the ocean to see the little prince. There was enchanting music and endless dinners with fancy foods, and a lot of dancing. It was such a happy time.”

“Then the bad men came…”

“That’s right. When Prince Stephanos was a few months old, two men sneaked into the palace and stole the baby. The palace guards looked everywhere but they couldn’t find the men or the little prince. The queen was so heartbroken that she refused to leave her chambers for a long time.”

“Poor lady.” Billy didn’t like that part. He had seen the queen a couple of times when Mama had taken him to the underwater city, and she had looked so sad. He hoped Mama and him were never separated like the queen and her baby had been.

“The high council sent the royal secret service to look for the prince everywhere, even on land. But it’s been over ten years, and they still haven’t found him. A few weeks after the prince was taken, I found out I was pregnant with you, so I left my job at the palace to be with your father, up here.”

Mama stopped talking then, and Billy looked up at her. She looked sad, a bit like the queen. He wondered why, since he was still there with her.

“I love you, Mama. I always want to be with you.”

Mama smiled down at him, but he could see the tears in her eyes, even if they didn’t fall. “I love you, too, Billy. No matter what happens, you will always be my precious boy.”

Shortly after, Mama decided it was time to go home. They swam to shore where she waited on the sand for him to focus enough to switch to two legs. He was still learning how to control the transformation, finding, like many other merchildren, that going from two legs to a tail was easier than the reverse. 

“It’s too hard, Mama. I can’t,” Billy said, frustrated and tired. Mama shushed him, her soft hand brushing his cheek as she kissed his forehead.

“It’s okay, baby, it takes time. It will come to you with more practice. Here,” she handed him the enchanted necklace that prevented merfolk transformations on land. Billy would need to use it when bathing and swimming around humans, until he could control his tail.

Harringrove Mermaid AU

Thank you so so so so much to @lemonhitsu who is the best partner in crime ever and let me use this beautiful piece of art as an inspiration (thank you SO much!).

Steve sighs as soon as his alarm goes off. He has been working at the Birch Aquarium for a couple of weeks and all his enthusiasm has already died. He was so happy when they called him back to take the place of the actual mermaid trainer, but two weeks of working with Billy were enough to make him regret his choice. The blond merman is the biggest pain in the ass ever. He never does what the trainer requests of him and is always glaring and hissing at Steve like a feral cat. The boy has learned on his skin that there is a reason why everyone tells you to not go near an angry mermaid without wearing protection. Mermaids are rare but not uncommon, the biggest aquariums in the world have at least one, and Steve’s aquarium was so lucky to have a baby mermaid that now became a beautiful merboy. Steve remembers the day he decided he was going to become a trainer. It was the day his parents brought him to see the baby mermaid that was the main attraction of the aquarium. If he closes his eyes he can still see the little mermaid hiding behind some big black rocks, his little red tail barely visible between the rocks. A kid has punched the glass, trying to get the attention of the little mermaid and Steve has seen for a moment a pair of ocean blue eyes big and terrified, and from that day on, every time his parents left him with a new babysitter he has asked to go to the aquarium until finally, one day, when Steve and the babysitter were the only visitors of the aquarium, he has caught a glimpse of the little merboy. They stared at each other through the glass for a long moment and then a man called a name and dragged the merboy away with a big fishnet. Steve turned toward his babysitter, Angela, and asked her who that man was and she told him that he was the mermaid's trainer. “So he plays with mermaids all day?” “It’s a job, Steve, I don’t think that he plays a lot, but yes, he spends his time with the mermaids.” Now that he is changing in the locker room, Steve is regretting for the umpteenth time having been so adamant about wanting to become a trainer. He sighs. He can’t quit. His father told him really clearly that if he is not able to keep the job he will cut him out once and for all. Fuck.

Sometimes his mother would even bring back humans—dead ones, of course. One’s that she’s lured to the water's edge with her siren's song before pulling them under and holding them tight until the bubbles stop coming out of their noses and mouths.

Females need their meat to survive—males don’t. His sharp claws and teeth are only to crack shells and defend territories, while the females’ attributes are more equipped for the seduction, luring, and the breaking of the bodies of human men. To mate with them, if they wanted to.

Billy knows this is how he came to be; his mother sang her song to some dumb human who fell face first into the waves, then she’d drug him down to their cove and meticulously tore him open in order to fertilize her eggs. So far, Billy was the only offspring she’d bothered to hatch. He had wondered more times than he can count if maybe she’d only kept him around as long as she did to alleviate her own loneliness.

And even though his mother seemed perpetually disappointed over the fact, Billy’s always been sort of relieved to have been born a male. Because the truth is… he likes the humans. Likes the strange things they drop, likes to way they ride on waves, and then he likes to watch the way they kick and flailing their skinny limbs when they get knocked, trying to stay afloat. Humans are endlessly amusing—Billy’s glad he doesn’t need to consume their flesh.

It seems like something akin to fate that Billy would find his mate in a human.

WIP Wednesday - Harringrove Mermaid AU

When the training ends Steve brings Billy back to his tank. The merboy is tired and he has red bruises where Neil hurt him “You ok?” It’s a stupid question, Steve knows that, but he can’t avoid it. “Are you worried about me, Harrington? How sweet.” the merboy replies, licking his sharp teeth “Maybe next time you’ll get into my tank I’ll keep you.” “Fuck you, Billy!” “Are you proposing, pretty boy?” It’s just their usual bickering but Steve can feel that his cheeks are blushing. “Oh, so you do have a crush on me. That makes so much sense. That’s why you are obsessed with me. Don’t worry, pretty boy, I’m not going to fuck you… at least not as you are thinking, but I’ll keep fucking with you because it’s the funniest thing that I can do in this stupid place.” Billy replies and then he gets underwater, while Steve stares at his big red tale covered in shimmering scales. “He has an attitude, I’ll give him that.” Hargrove says appearing from nowhere “But stay away from him. He is still a mermaid and even if he hasn’t had the time to learn the songs from other mermaids he is still capable of convincing you to kill yourself in his tank. It would not be the first time.” Steve stares at the old man “Did he… Did he kill someone? For real?” The man nods, walking Steve toward the lockers “You are too young to remember, but there was another girl who trained with me years ago, pretty thing, red hair, sweet smile, the name was Susan. She was even more innocent than you are, she treated him like a kid, not like the monster he is, and one day when I got to the tank to feed him, he was underwater, holding Susan’s body into his arms. He attacked me when I tried to take the dead body from his arms, and the authorities had him sedated and they were ready to put him down, but there was a petition against it and he was still the biggest attraction of the aquarium, so, in the end, they decided to keep him but they move him to the tank where he is now, in a more secluded area and where no one else could get in a part from me and you, so pay attention if you don’t want to get killed during your first month of training.” They are changing together for the first time and Steve sees many claws signs on Neil’s body “Did he…” “Mermaids are like that. You have to pay attention every single second.” The man gets up “Listen, boy, I know that you don't like my way of training him, but you have to understand that he is not a pretty pet, he is a ferocious monster and our luck is that he was taken from his family too young so he doesn’t really know what he can do and how easy would be for him kill everyone.” He closes his bag “I don’t pretend that you agree with my method, but I want you to be conscious that he is a menace and you are the only person that stays between him and the visitors. Think about yourself like a sort of paladin. That’s what I do.” They are looking each other in the eyes when Neil asks him “Wouldn’t you do what you can to protect the people you care for?” and then he leaves Steve alone with even more questions.
