Per Neil’s request Billy stands on a ladder stringing up Christmas lights with a reddened nose and ears from the Hawkins winter. He grumbles as he reaches up to hook the strand into place. This was a waste of time and was the last thing he wanted to do. He’d much rather be inside where it was warm.

Max rolls her eyes as she stands below him bundled up as she quietly passed him the lights. She’s been listening to him curse about missing California like it was her fault he didn’t want to wear a hat because it would ruin his hair.

Afterwards they silently stood in front of the house inspecting the multicolored strand lining of the roof.

“This is stupid,” Billy complains as he smokes a cigarette. He thought they helped provide warmth.

“You’re stupid,” Max automatically replied. She could see the nearly hidden smile on his face as she glanced up at him.

They wouldn’t admit it but the house looked nice with a slightly crooked string of lights.
