Wait, I'm having angsty thoughts about Billy surviving the Mindflayer. Because by the time he gets out of the hospital, he has been violated in just about every way except for sexual. The Mindflayer took control of his body against his will, and used it to hurt and kill people. It rifled through his mind and tore right through his most precious memories and his most well-guarded secrets (it may not have understood them or cared about them, but it still went through them without his consent). And once he's in the hospital, he can't do anything by himself - not even breathe, at first - so he needs help eating, standing up, relieving himself. For a long time, there are unwanted hands on him all the time, unwanted touch, when he just wants to be alone in his own body. (And I bet you that those hands are wearing gloves, plastic or vinyl, for the nurse's safety).

He wants to shower; doesn't know why, just wants to wash away the feeling of disgust - like the Mindflayer put its mark on his skin instead of on his mind, and like he can erase the nurses' and lab people's invasive, clinical touches. But of course he can't, he's got healing scars all over, the most he can get is a sponge bath, which is worse because it's even more unwanted touch, now with added humiliation.

He pulls into himself for protection.

And when Billy finally gets out of the hospital he is hopelessly touch-starved but at the same time absolutely adverse to any kind of touch. (The last time someone touched his bare skin in kindness was when Heather reached out in worry, and she died for it.) So now, he recoils every time it even looks like someone gets too close.

Not many people visited him in the hospital, or stay in touch when he's out, but if they do happen upon him they see him recoil and they don't really know him all that well so they stop reaching out, to respect his wishes. Which is what he wants, but also not. Neil maybe still leaves, maybe Billy can still live with Susan and Max (but they don't know how to deal with this new silent version of Billy). Or maybe his dad is still around and that's worse, because either Neil is not touching him anymore because he's disgusted, or he's still hurting him which is not the kind of touch Billy needs. Or maybe Billy lives somewhere on his own now, because he didn't have anywhere to go.

Either way, he's lonely, and traumatized, and spends many a night in the shower, scratching at his own skin, until the water turns cold, which is when he scrambles out of the shower, heart in his throat, because He liked it cold.

In short, Billy is a mess.

It’s so funny when you think about Steve figuring out he’s bi and taking flirting with men like a fish to water.

Like Robin is lowkey stoked at first cuz she thinks she can finally call out Steve as a hypocrite cuz he’s always hounding on her being so awkward with girls—expecting him to fumble and be self conscious and scared like her. But nope.

She watches with a hanging jaw as Steve just goes up to a guy to flirt.

“Steve! What if he’s homophobic!? And picks a fight!?”

“Uh, I can fight.”

“But you CAN’T tho.”

And it turns into a day long argument on whether Steve can fight or not.

“Robin, I’ve fought literal monsters. And won.”

“Yeah, but none of them started swinging now did they Steve? I’ve watched you crumple on the first swing; you can’t take a punch!”

“Then, I’ll just avoid getting punched?” [does little dodging maneuvers like he’s ever boxed a day in his life]

Robin smacks him right in the face.

“Ow, Robin wtf?”

“I was proving a point. You ain’t dodging shit.”

Robin concludes Steve has no issue with flirting with men cuz he has very low risk assessment skills.
