But Arthur died in winter. So, I imagine there weren't many flowers around.

And I imagine that Merlin couldn't bring himself to bed Arthur in flowers made of his own magic because of what the dragon said. This isn't a goodbye. It's a see you later.

With Freya, he buried his first love who died because of her curse. Lancelot was also cursed. His burial was a second dearth. Both of them had closure.

Merlin wasn't ready to let go. And I agree with you, OP, there isn't enough flowers Merlin can put into that boat to represent how he really feels. And without Arthur, Merlin's life will be dull and grey.

This also implies that Freya's and Lancelot's death served a purpose, while Arthur's didn't.

Merlin gave Freya roses.

He filled Lancelot’s boat with flowers.

He didn’t give any to Arthur, because there would never have been enough or the right kind to represent his feelings towards Arthur.

The bare boat, with nothing but kindling, nothing but the bare bones of what is needed, perfectly reflects Merlin’s life without Arthur. No joy. No beauty.

I believe it’s called the red string of fate.” “Fate?” Arthur said incredulously. “What, is he going to be the one to kill me?” “Getting more likely by the minute,” Merlin supplied. “Shut up, Merlin.” Gaius held up a weary hand. “Legend has it that the string connects people to the person with whom they are most compatible.” There was a beat of silence. “You have got to be kidding me.”

this fic? absolutely hilarious. Arthur and Merlin find themselves tied together by the red string of fate, and figure that attempting to fix it by having lots of sex probably isn't the worst thing they can do. it's one of the only fics I've read where Arthur knowing about Merlin's magic and the drama about that actually winds up taking a back seat to the rest of the general shenanigans, and it's really good fun to read.
