You know that two characters are your OTP when you have a dream about a perfectly plotted fanfic of them (even though I’m only on Windwitch and they’re making me sad).... do you know if Merik and Safi have a ship name among the fandom?? I love them and I love your books!
I am so glad you like them!!
I think the ship name is Safik, though I’m sure Witchlanders can hop on here and correct me if I’m wrong...

Merik, after trying to ask Safi out: I was completely flustered. I came off like an idiot. I mean, at one point, for no reason, I just took off my shoes and held them in my hand.

*during the storm in Lejna*
Iseult: It’s a bird!
Safi: It’s a mountain bat!
Merik *devastated*: It’s Kullen, cleaving.

I feel like we need to come up with some ship names for all the ships in the witchlands... Should we all band together and come up with some? It could make it easier to track and then bring more notes to the witchland posts
I AGREE, WE NEED UNIFORMITY.
That being said, I am the actual worst at coming up with ship names, so...
I guess the first place to start would be deciding the format? The different formats I can think of are:
Name-mashing
Witchery-mashing
Or we could steal from the Pokemon fandom and do symbolshipping
Pros and cons for each of those:
Name-mashing:
Pro: Ensures the ship name will be unique
Con: Some names do not mash well and it's HARD DSGUHSUIGHSD
Witchery-mashing:
Pro: Easier to do and usually sounds ok no matter what
Con: What about characters without witcheries???
Symbolshipping:
Pro: Usually sounds good
Con: Is it unique enough not to overlap with the pokemon fandom lol
SO LET ME THROW OUT SOME OPTIONS FOR EACH FORMAT, and then people can decide which format they like best and throw out more options for those, and then I can gather people's responses and make another post (since reblogs don't show up in searches) with what seems to be everyone's preference?
THESE ARE MY THOUGHTS BUT....again..............I am terrible at naming ships, so please, please, please add to this :)
Safi x Merik:
Name-mashing: Safik, Same (lol), Serik, Mesa, Mefiya, Meriya
Witchery-mashing: Truthwind, Windtruth
Symbolshipping: Fourstepshipping, Contractshipping
Iseult x Aeduan:
Name-mashing: I think Baeseult is what Twitter decided on before for this one
Witchery-mashing: Bloodthread, Threadblood
Symbolshipping: Lighthouseshipping, Amonrashipping, Fireflyshipping
Vivia x Stix:
Name-mashing: Stivia, Vix
Witchery-mashing: Tidewater, Watertide
Symbolshipping: Firstmateshipping, Pinshipping, Damshipping
Ryber x Kullen:
Name-mashing: Rylen, Ryblen, Kullery...? (These are terrible, I am terrible)
Witchery-mashing: Airsight, Sightair
Symbolshipping: Smileshipping, Paladinshipping, Rookshipping
Leopold x Vaness (YEAH IDC IF I'M THE ONLY ONE WHO CARES SOB):
Name-mashing: Leoness (ohhh), Vapold, Valeo, Leova
Witchery-mashing: ...Leopold doesn't have a witchery right...unless he's a heretic... we can put Ironcharm here because Leopold's charm is his witchery
Symbolshipping: Gownshipping, Dateshipping
Safi x Vaness:
Name-mashing: Vans, Saness, Safess, Savan...
Witchery-mashing: Irontruth (ohhh), Truthiron
Symbolshipping: Flailshipping, Choiceshipping
Caden x Safi (AGAIN IDC IF I'M THE ONLY ONE...I ship everything):
Name-mashing: Saden, Cafi, Cadensa
Witchery-mashing: ...Truthhell? Truthbard?
Symbolshipping: Nooseshipping, Hereticshipping, Hellbardshipping
DID I MISS ANY SHIPS?? Tell me what I missed below and what your favorite format/ship name is for them.@stdennard Maybe you could tell Twitter to come here to vote?

What happens to "enemies next to lovers"?!? I don't want to criticize but in today's YA books the "enemies" part is cut off entirely. She thinks he is the most handsome man since the.first.time.she.saw.him. And he wants her from the moment he lays eyes on her?!? And I ask what's going on? I don't see at what point in the book they are enemies. And the fact that I read the same male main character in every YA book, I don't think to comment on it at all.
But, look, Susan Dennard is the Queen of ,,enemies to lovers". Safiand Merick had a fight the first time they met and continued to fight for quite a long time before they decided they liked each other. Aeduan and Iseult....well Aeduan tried to kill her and Iseult's first words to Aeduan are something like beheading him. In both couples, sympathy emerges with difficulty slowly, and during that time at least there is chemistry.
This is how enemies become lovers.
Without stereotypes and clichés.

Not sure I did this right, but here we go. I saw your book rec game and I'm always down for more recs. I love enemies to love, redemption arcs, morally grey characters and am a sucker for a good slowburn. Fave ships: Kaz/Inej, Nesta/Cassian, Will/Elizabeth, Roy/Riza, Tella/Legend, Lorcan/Elide, Jane/Bingley. I'm in my early 20s, a libra, and gravitate towards fantasy thriller/suspense. Any recs? I'll take any and all
@emenem17
Ok you made this really easy because if I’m being completely honest, those tropes are all I read haha. So my top five recs for you, because you haven’t mentioned them so I’m assuming you haven’t read them yet, are:
The Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden, which is based on Russian mythology, and features a suspenseful enemies to lovers slow burn between a powerful young woman on a mission to save her homeland and her demon adversary ; )
The Witchlands Series by Susan Dennard features TWO enemies to lovers pairs, an innovative and original concept of magic, morally grey characters, and a complicated, fantastical adventure centered around ending an inevitable war before it begins. And since you mentioned Elide and Lorcan, I have to mention that there are parts in this series where our favorite enemies-to-lovers pair reluctantly embarks on a long trip through wilderness together ; )
The Serpent and Dove Series by Shelby Mahurin is a playfully written story featuring a very natural enemies to lovers romance between a sassy, hot headed, witch on the run from her coven and a level headed, rational, and sometimes all too moral, witch hunter.
The Folk of the Air Trilogy by Holly Black is probably the first series that comes to mind when I think of good enemies to lovers slowburns. Faeries, riddles, mysteries, strategizing, adventure, sword fighting, drunk pretty bois, murder, coups, fairy feuds... what more can I say? It’s not quite as... mature of a series if I’m being honest, but in the sense that it’s really straight forward and the writing is easy to read, not that... mature things don’t happen, if you catch my meaning, or that there aren’t a thousand plot twists and a thousand more puzzle pieces to the story that Holly Black puts together seamlessly by the end.
And if you’re into dark stuff and also have infinite patience, I recommend the Something Dark and Holy Trilogy by Emily A Duncan. I loved it because it features a tall, dark and handsome villain you can’t help but love, and a painfully slow-burning enemies-to-lovers romance between said villain and a powerful young woman bent on bringing down the enemy kingdom. However, this series is not for everyone as it is not exactly plot heavy for a good bit of the books. Duncan spends a lot of time developing the characters, politics, and magic concepts. Personally, I liked those slower parts because they allowed me to enjoy the characters’ banter and budding relationships, so I’d say give it a try!
Also, go read my review of the House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J Maas from her new Crescent City series. It is primarily a mystery set in an urban fantasy world that happens to feature an enemies to lovers slow burn, and is also very mature in both the writing and topics tackled in the story. My review goes into more detail though, so give it a read for more info.
I hope you enjoys these series if you haven’t already! If you want more information on any of them, Goodreads has great descriptions and plenty of reviews to help you make up your mind. Let me know how it goes!
And as always, happy reading, love! ❤️ 📚 💖

the witchlands ships: merik & safi
Iseult’s jaw slackened as she watched on. The Threads over Safi’s—and Merik’s heads—throbbed with a harsh, urgent need. Safi’s Threads grabbed for Merik’s, and his wrapped and twined into hers.
Right before Iseult’s eyes, Safi’s Threads were changing from those that build into those that bind.

The witchlands ships on a movie night
Safi x Merik - Chapter 24 of Safi, No
Aeduan x Iseult - constant agonizing over whether they’re sitting too close or glancing over at each other too much to be plausible
Vivia x Stix - about halfway through, Stix reaches out and holds Vivia’s hand.  It’s not at a particularly scary or tense scene, she just does it.  And Vivia certainly isn’t going to let go, so they’re holding hands for the rest of the movie
Ryber x Kullen - for them, watching a movie is basically just an excuse to sit super close and cuddle for two hours.  The Rook watches the movie from Kullen’s shoulder
Safi x Caden - they don’t get to actually enjoy the movie because Caden spends the whole time relentlessly criticizing the actors
Vivia x Vaness - they rarely have the time to watch movies together, but when they do it’s just a calming way to rewind for both of them
