I’m obsessed with the Thai mango salad from Mendocino Farms. So I tried to create it at home. I marinated chicken breast in oil, vinegar, soy sauce and honey and grilled it. For the salad I used cabbage, little gem lettuce, carrots, peppers, purple onion, mango, cilantro, mint and sweet and spicy pecans for a crispy topping. The dressing is the tricky part. I used a lime, soy sauce, honey, garlic, ginger and oil. It was good but the dressing didn’t match Mendocino Farms. I’ll work on it.
Made a new dressing today: lime juice, brown sugar, soy sauce, sweet chili sauce, olive oil and cayenne pepper. I didn’t measure the ingredients but more lime juice than anything.

Mendocino Farms, 769 Americana Way, Glendale, CA 91210
Tumblr media
Mendocino Farms at The Americana is quite new (it opened in July 2023). The menu is the same at all their locations, with some seasonal, limited time offerings and their standard array of sandwiches, salads, soup, deli sides, cookies, and beverages.
I’ve tried many things over the years and definitely prefer the salads to the sandwiches. The salads are big and satisfying. They’re made with fresh, high quality ingredients. It’s easy to order online. They have an area where you can pick up your order without needing to talk to an employee. Or if you order at the counter, they’ll give you a buzzer that goes off when your order is ready.
Avocado & quinoa superfood ensalada w/ chipotle vinaigrette ($12.35): Our usual pick, lots of interesting textures and fresh ingredients, including chopped romaine, curly kale, quinoa & millet, housemade superfood krunchies, succotash with roasted corn, black beans & jicama, red onions, cilantro, cotija cheese, grape tomatoes, sliced avocado and a chipotle vinaigrette. Love the creamy avocado and the housemade superfood crunchies. The dressing is very tasty too. They don’t skimp on any of the ingredients. However, they no longer include the whole wheat tortilla. Wish they’d provide a choice of bread and offer a nice roll or piece of focaccia.
This location has indoor seating and a covered outdoor patio. Curbside pickup isn’t available.

Past few days recap :)
1/28/22
✨ nothing too eventful has happened the last few days, started my last semester which I’m actually excited for!
I also finished my whole Veronica Mars rewatch and I feel so accomplished lol! It’s been a Kristen Bell, like month and a half lol! Veronica Mars, then I watched the first three episodes of her new show, The Woman Across the Street Who Saw the Woman in the Window (I thiiiink that is the title haha) and it was SO GOOD!! I got to preview it! So tomorrow when it officially comes out I’ll get to watch the rest of the first season!! So excited!! And then now I’m snuggled up reading and have The Good Place on in the background! I’ve seen the episodes for this show so many times but it’s such a comfort show so having it on is nice!
✨ my mornings have been going on a run or long walk, then coming home and going to my zoom classes! We’re in person starting Feb 12, but the first two weeks are online for Covid purposes. I’m nervous, but so excited to get to be on campus (and use the gyyyymmmm) for my last few months of school!
✨ I juggled doing class work and finishing up Veronica Mara (lol) which I was proud of!
✨ lots of yummy food was had the past few days! Dates with pb/chocolate almond butter and chia squeezes have been my go to snacks lately!
✨ then today I had vans blueberry waffles with melted chocolate almond butter melted as a dip! Then I went on a long walk afterwards which was so nice! It ended up being 8.5 miles of happiness :’)
✨ I had class from 10:30am-11:50am and afterwards spent a few hours with a friend and hung out with her and her pup!
✨ then I came home, ordered mendi’s for dinner (Mendocino farms haha) and got my usual, spicy couscous and then the impossible chorizo salad! (Both so damn good!!)
✨ now I’m snuggled up in bed, sipping on hot cocoa I made while watching The Good Place! Perfect night tbh :)
✨ tomorrow I work (ugh I am so excited to only be working one day a week at work in two weeks time! I am privileged to be able to not have to work and go to school, I have done that all through school up until this semester and I am so relieved to get the break from juggling both!! So after working tomorrow and Saturday and then next week working Thursday-Sunday I will only be there Saturdays and I. Am. Stoked!!
✨ I hope you all are having a good night (or day depending on where you are in the world) ☺️

Mendocino Farms, 238 S Lake Ave., Pasadena, CA 91101, Score: 38/50
Tumblr media
Mendocino Farms opened last year, taking over the old Abricott space. They offer “premium ingredients at affordable prices,” including working directly with farmers to obtain local, sustainable produce. The food is very fresh and fairly healthy but portions are generous.
Score: 38/50
Food: 5/5 – The menu includes entrée salads, sandwiches, sides, and cookies. There are seasonal specials too. The huge salads are the star. We love the avocado & quinoa superfood ensalada ($10.75). The avocado toast featured very tender turkey slices and a tangy yogurt based green goddess dressing with sprouts, butter lettuce, mashed avocado, pickled red onions and a thin, nutty toast.
Coffee: 3/5 – I don’t think they have coffee. For beverages, choose from Wolfgang Puck all natural sodas, house lemonade, and iced tea (with free refills). Help yourself to complimentary water.
Wi-fi: 4/5 – Free, no password needed, no limits. You have to agree to the terms before connecting.
Ambiance: 5/5 – It was nice during the Abricott days and it’s still nice with a covered patio and more seating inside. The walls, tables, and some chairs are white but they have one grey walled area with a huge chandelier and b/w photos.
Noise: 3/5 – Quiet but the rock music is pretty loud and once it gets busy, it gets noisy (might be because the floor is concrete)
Plugs: 2/5 –There are some outlets but not many.
Parking: 3/5 – They have a few of their own spaces behind the restaurant. There are public parking lots off Lake where you can park for 90 minutes for free.
Comfort: 4/5 – Padded banquettes, wood chairs, metal stools, a variety of table sizes. Some of the tables can be pushed together if needed.
Bathroom: 5/5 – Two nice restrooms
Art: 4/5 – B/W photos of farms
Tips: Online ordering available. Ask for free samples of their side salads and soups. Order at the front and get a buzzer.

Monday- walked to breakfast at the Beach House Inn’s sister property (Beachcomber) 1/2 mile north, and then took a walk along the oceanfront for pictures. Drove to Van Damme State Park for a 3.5 mile walk in Fern Canyon Trail. Lots of ferns and redwoods- gorgeous and wind protected! At the recommendation of the park ranger, headed to Patterson’s Irish pub in Mendo for a beer. Drank Pliny the Elder from Russian River Brewing (hoppy!), fried clam strips and a wild salmon Caesar salad.
Drove to Mendocino Headlands for pics of the sunset and the wild Pacific waves before heading back to our place to soak in hot water.

Zinburger, 1865 E River Rd, Tucson, AZ 85718
Tumblr media
Zinburger is a local Tucson gourmet burger chain that elevates the burger experience. I was surprised by how large the space was and how busy. It’s a place for gathering, relaxing, and eating. It has a polished, chain feel. It reminded me of Mendocino Farms only for burgers. It’s full service.
The menu includes appetizers (fries, wings), salads, burgers (including a build your own burger option), cocktails, wine, beer, and shakes. They have some gluten-free options, including gluten-free buns, but nothing on the menu was labeled vegan.
Portions were smaller and burgers did not come with sides. A classic burger is $9.75 and the priciest burger was $13.95. Burgers are made with certified Angus beef. They also had a turkey burger and a veggie burger.
Zucchini fries ($7.75) with Parmesan and Ranch dressing. The portion was small. The fries were generously dushed with Parmesan but didn’t have much cheese flavor. The zucchini was julienned into thinner strips than I’m used to and the batter was lighter (panko crumbs) than LA zucchini fries. Tasted good and healthier but wasn’t crunchy. Also, Ranch is a boring dressing to offer on the side.
Farm salad ($11): quinoa, corn, avocado, carrot, cabbage, radish, cucumber, tomato, feta, and champagne vinaigrette. It looked good and had a lot going on. Ingredients were fresh.
Service was friendly. It did live up the image of being an elevated burger place. Parking was easy (it’s in a strip mall).

some 2018 things I want to remember
In a lot of ways I had a good year. This is not a list of Best Things so much as it is a list of memories I want to take note of, so it’s heavy on the moments as opposed to, like, life events.
January: Going to an exhibit of Japanese lacquer art at the MIA that absolutely blew my mind. I’ve never felt so acquisitive in a museum, or so badly wanted to touch the art, but even without being able to own or touch it the lacquered shapes as big as me were just. So cool. I looked at one for a good while called “Inner Side--Outer Side” by Tanaka Nobuyuki and went from back to front to back and, in a way that’s hard to explain, felt heartened about the endeavor of physicality.
February: Watching the men’s free skate in the Pyeongchang Olympics on my parents’ enormous television while they were in South America and I was dogsitting, and reacting as loudly and physically as if anyone else had been there with me.
March: There were of course a bunch of amazing moments at the wedding this month, but some of the smaller ones I like to recall are when @lionteacher tried to go set up the “““surprise””” bach party and got stuck on a balcony and we had to rescue her (we then played a rousing round of Slash and I played a Bach playlist I’m still rather proud of); and at lunch in Mendocino, the day of the rehearsal, when I spotted a flier for an event called Rockin’ With Barn Owls and had to point it out to everyone I was with and @ars-amatoria was like “I thought you’d like Mendocino”; and swapping makeup tips with nearly everybody else there and finding out that half the time the makeup I liked was from a Yuri on Ice fan collection on ColourPop; and being at brunch the morning after the wedding and saying “But I don’t want to leave.”
April: I’m going to put another memory from (fine, I’ll say it) Mia in this list because I made it to Art in Bloom this year and it was incredibly lovely; there were some arrangements made to pair with a set of woodblock prints of a boat in the harbor that I still think about sometimes. Also my writing group threw a Paris-themed surprise birthday party for one of our members, complete with salade Niçoise, prop cigarettes, and a couple of husbands pressed into service as waiters in striped shirts.
May: Choir held a gala at a swanky hotel in downtown Minneapolis; we sang a bunch of songs on the theme of togetherness and on “We Go Together” the alto section took it upon ourselves to do the hand jive even though nobody else was doing it, and then a friend and I noticed an unoccupied table and sat there for the rest of the night pretending to be paying guests, and the New Standards played a set at the end of the night for which those of us who hadn’t left yet stood up by the stage and danced around. Also the Saturday I spent going to the Festival of Nations, shopping for a book to give my mom for Mother’s Day, and poking around in the big central Saint Paul public library nonfiction stacks while a saxophone ensemble played jazz in the Fitzgerald Room nearby.
June: My life got briefly taken over by many pounds of strawberries. Fortunately a friend threw a midsummer party that same weekend, where I was able to share a bunch of berries and talk with a French woman who doesn’t like cheese.
July: The first two thirds of the tragedy tour, plus sitting in the sun over the July 4 weekend and figuring something out about the year’s biggest writing project and having the next several thousand words go on like jam.
August: Sitting with my brother and sister-in-law outside the cabin where we were on vacation and seeing a fox and then, very shortly afterward, a mama bear with her three cubs. When the bear arrived we went inside, because that seemed like the best course of action, and watched through the windows of the cabin while they loped around and one of the cubs raced to catch up and then they all calmly retreated into the woods.
September: Riding in the Saint Paul Bike Classic for something like the eighth year in a row, and running into the same friend at every rest stop, though the first time was when I announced my tires were full by clownishly saying “I am pumped! up!” and then he was five feet away and said “Hi Marjorie, I’m glad you’re pumped up.”
October: After teaching my first class at the Loft: going to have lunch at the café downstairs, running into someone I knew who'd been using the Center for Book Arts facilities to do some paper marbling, and having lunch together while talking about fairy tales, creative nonfiction, and the McElroy references in Hamilton. Also a hundred different things from this month’s wedding, including (maybe least importantly but again, moments not life events) the rainbow that showed up over the parking lot while we assembled for the rehearsal; and me earworming @ars-amatoria with the Inspector Gadget theme song immediately before the ceremony and trying to pass it off as a don’t-cry device; and the bachelorette party where a friend unpacked the Moana-themed party supplies, noticed we had little bags for party favors but no favors to put them in, left and came back with a dozen rum nips, so the attendees all got a bag containing one of those and a face mask. The next day we found four of those bags and turned them inside out to wrap around the stems of the bouquets.
November: Going to choir rehearsal on election night, waiting nervously around before rehearsal started and checking for results that mostly weren’t there yet, yelling to someone across the room “The Democrats flipped the governorship of Guam!”
December: These get harder to choose the more recent the month is, but I do want to remember the night I borrowed a car to drive to a committee meeting, gave someone else a ride home afterward, and got invited up to meet her new cat, and we both sat there telling the cat how amazing she was for a good twenty minutes.

Mendocino Farms looks to Santa Clara for next location
Mendocino Farms looks to Santa Clara for next location
Here’s an early heads up: Mendocino Farms is coming your way, Santa Clara. The 13th Northern California location for the seasonal sandwich, salad and soup specialist is tentatively expected to open this fall at the new Mission Park Marketplace in the city’s northern tech corridor. Owners Ellen Chen and Mario Del Pero (they’re NorCal expats, and she’s a native of Lafayette) began expanding their…
