favorite part of work today was when i told the kids to get into two lines, n this one guy was like "i don't want to" n then started talking to his buddy in mandarin, n so then in chinese i was like, "hey, come here."

n he n his buddy looked at each other n then looked at me with like that faintly displeased expression that means they've realized they can't get away with not being that good at english (or feel terribly isolated from n indifferent to the adults bc they don't speak their language) anymore

and then when i told them to line up in mandarin they groaned abt it for sure but they did drag themselves into a line

So every summer I have a Stress Relief Story that writes itself 99% inside my head during down moments from work. (The fact that Crowbar was one of these says a lot about the time over which it was written)

This summer's, since I'm very pleased with my work but also incredibly busy, decided to manifest all at once the moment I had breathing space and now I have 25k words in 5 days about a Horse Girl deciding she can ~bond~ with the nasty stinky wild dragon no one else can touch. It's actually been a lot of fun to just slam out a rough draft again, been a while since the story lived outside my head as well as inside of it.

My Horse Girl Vessa is a mid-twenties horse trainer in a Stock Fantasy World where she has an entry-level job training knights' horses for use in fighting dangerous creatures, including dragons. When beast-trainers haul in a half-dead young dragon and torture it to make it accept a mind-wiping magical seal, she intervenes the only way she knows how - with consistent kindness, a calm voice and an incredibly risky magic of her own. "Everyone says" there's never been a 'tame' dragon before, and every dragon-riding knight in the Five Kingdoms knows their spell-enslaved dragons will kill them eventually, but as she grows closer to the dragon she learns there's much more to the dragons and the magic they share than what "everyone says." She's taking her first steps in a long and hidden tradition of true partnership between humans and the magical beasts that surround their world, a tradition her own sovereign queen is dedicated to destroying. There is no bloody revolution or overthrowing of the sovereign who holds the Five Kingdoms in her hand, but there is endurance and in the long journey together, there is great peace.

Vessa is a complete non-action farm kid who pretty much stays a plucky horse girl the entire time. No swords, no rebellions, the queen doesn't die, no one has any sex, and there's no singular antagonist, just them navigating each other, their friends, their magic and the other stuff happening in the setting. We'll see how far we get before the ball stops rolling.

Ethos horrible little DIY shack monstrosity with a room full of discarded CRT monitors, clear plastic Mac and already-yellowing pc ones. half of them are plugged into something or other and if you accidentally bump into anything your skin crackles with the electricity. bdubs cut his teeth doing restoration work before getting yoinked by Scar and if you ask him about it he starts talking about that one bio incident with the multi-house deer bloodbath*. nobody asks anymore. etho does have him over for second opinions on structural soundness the answer to which is always a NO at full volume and lectures on fire hazards and the consequences of electrical fires (again in great detail). etho nods and smiles through most of it as he starts moving parts around and revealing new horrors that set bdubs lecturing again and not noticing that the ugly lamp got put back in the trunk of the crastle in the middle somewhere.

sometimes i think if everyone collectively decided to wait on graphics in the early 90s because they correctly decided its not quite there yet we wouldnt have amazing pieces of incredible visuals back then that looking back is like. iconic for their bizarre uniqueness

thinking about this white girl in high school who got everything handed to her and her bland most boringly “conceptual” artwork Highly Praised All the Time, and my bby sister came across a tiktok where she showed off a painting of a still life with a disco ball (like wow! totally havent seen THAT ten thousands time before *eye roll*) and said something about “to all the people in hs who said my work wasnt good look at me now” and loads of other very bland yt ppl in the comments dissed us and praised her bullshit…..so naturally i looked over all her socials and this girl. has barely done any shows or exhibitions, much less any art related internships or jobs, much less any art or creative related community work either since we graduated….. she’s constantly and Very Obviously networking with her wealthy peers at that little gentrified ass university and it doesnt even serve her. and i just thought to myself yup! im still better than that white girl LMFAO 😉🤞🏽

I actually looked the study up last time I saw this (with some difficulty, will reblog if I can find the links again) and this graphic is very misleading.

The survey data just recorded one of "pointed to Iran", "pointed to Iraq instead", and "pointed literally anywhere else". The people who made the graphic chose to illustrate this by distributing the other dots around the globe according to… something. Artistic choice? It's not just population, but it's not evenly and it's not randomly… But it's not according to the survey data because alternate location wasn't recorded.

I'm not 100% certain no one thought Iran was in Australia, Oklahoma, or the middle of the ocean — but don't take this graphic's word for it, because it doesn't have that data!

Dawg I work in automating email-job-type-tasks and my coworkers - fellow elder millennials - were STUNNED at my solution to create a dynamic folder name. Not the method of making it dynamic, the part that stunned them was the "run cmd.exe: '/c mkdir [filepath]'" and at the point where I was going "yeah no its not wizardry its just like... a vestigial recreation of MSDOS..." I had to confront that frankly computer literacy has never been more in the toilet.

Telling young zoomers to "just switch to linux" is nuts some of these ipad kids have never even heard of a cmd.exe or BIOS you're throwing them to the wolves
