Benge - The View From Vega - all space music for his new solo LP on DiN
Ben Edwards, better known by his pseudonym Benge, has been exploring the sonic possibilities of electronic instruments since he was a young boy, in the1970s. After graduating from art school in 1990 he set up his own music studio and started recording his unique blend of experimental electronica, culminating in his debut album "Electro-Orgoustic Music" and the formation of Expanding Records in 1995. Since then he has released dozens of albums as Benge, as well as collaborating with various luminaries from the electronic music world on many other album projects. He has formed several notable and ongoing bands such as John Foxx & The Maths, Wrangler (with Stephen Mallinder / Cabaret Voltaire and Phil Winter / Tunng), Fader (with Neil Arthur / Blancmange), and his most recent project Creep Show (Wrangler + John Grant). Benge's creative output now centres around his Memetune Studio Complex, located in one of the UKs remotest moorland locations, writing and producing his various music projects as well as making video art and TV programmes about his activities. “The View From Vega”, his debut solo album on the DiN imprint, is primarily an ambient suite of tracks inspired by the space-music typically produced in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It uses a selection of vintage synthesisers, sequencers and FX units to provide a fertile sonic landscape to explore. The idea was to use simple sequences (using both analogue and digital units), sustained synthesiser pads and electronic piano improvisations, alongside various ancient delay, flange and reverb units. The beautiful, warm quality of the tones that exude from such instruments are very evident on the six tracks that slowly unfold their oscillations in organic, melodic soundscapes. An unashamedly vintage sounding album in all its analogue glory, “The View From Vega” is released both as a 180g Vinyl edition and a Digipak CD with stunning artwork from Wendy Carroll that matches the music perfectly. Synthesisers: Moog Modular IIIC Polyfusion Modular Roland SH5 / System 100 / Piano-Plus-70 Yamaha CP30 / SS30 EMS VCS3 ARP Chroma Sequencers: Roland MC4 Moog Dual 960 (Cloned) EMS TKS FX Units: Dynacord TAM21 Stereo Flanger/Doubler Dynacord DRP16 Reverb Dynacord DRS78 Reverb / Delay Polyfusion Modular Phase unit Electro-Harmonix Smallstone Phaser

[News] Creep Show veröffentlichen ihren neuen Song „Uneffable“
Creep Show, das Projekt von John Grant und der Band Wrangler veröffentlichen mit dem Track „Uneffable“ einen weiteren Song. Stephen Mallinder, Teil der Band Wrangler, beschreibt diesen als “a track built from bits of electricity and static, shaped in Icelandic lava and Cornish granite. Sprinkled with love and irony from the honey tones of John Grant. Creep Show are a group made of impeccable taste and technology who live far clung corners of the world, seriously challenging the capabilities of sat nav, and mysteriously come together by casting spells [...]”
„Uneffable“ wurde in Cornwall im Memetune Studio von Stephen Mallinder, Phil Winter und Benge produziert und in Island fertiggestellt. Dabei wurden ältere Drum Machines und modulare Synthesizers verwendet.

Stephen Mallinder - Contact - from his forthcoming LP “tick tick tick”; a shoo-in for the “sounds like Cabaret Voltaire” list ;)
Cabaret Voltaire co-founder Stephen Mallinder’s second solo outing for Dais further distills his signature fusion of minimal synth, oblique wordplay, and “wonky disco” into a riveting rhythm suite ripe for our Age of Escalation: "tick tick tick." Channeling the temporal malaise of lockdown through a lusher palette of modular electronics and stereo strings, the songs embrace ambiguity and plasticity, loose systems of percolating circuitry and airless funk. Recorded across a handful of sessions at MemeTune Studios in Cornwall with frequent collaborator Benge (aka Ben Edwards), Mallinder cites no guiding aesthetic premise for the collection beyond “cowbell on every track, and entirely no reverb.”

Stephen Mallinder - tick tick tick
Cabaret Voltaire co-founder Stephen Mallinder’s second solo outing for Dais further distills his signature fusion of minimal synth, oblique wordplay, and “wonky disco” into a riveting rhythm suite ripe for our age of escalation: tick tick tick. Channeling the temporal malaise of lockdown through a lusher palette of modular electronics and stereo strings, the songs embrace ambiguity and plasticity, loose systems of percolating circuitry and airless funk. Recorded across a handful of sessions at MemeTune Studios in Cornwall with frequent collaborator Benge (aka Ben Edwards), Mallinder cites no guiding aesthetic premise for the collection beyond “cowbell on every track, and entirely no reverb.” From the first coiled cybernetic groove of opener “Contact,” the album’s spatial dynamics are disorienting and asymmetrical, alternately cold and sensual, opiated and claustrophobic. But, throughout, “rhythm is the default, the bedrock, the building block – even the melodies are rhythmic.” Across 40-plus years of electronic musicianship, Mallinder’s sense of timing and tempo has honed into a rare tier of mastery, limber and fluid but knotted with strange frictions. Shades of Detroit technoid industrial (“ringdropp,” “Shock to the Body”) crossfade into no wavy punk-funk (“Guernica Gallery,” “Galaxy,” “The Trial”), bad trip IDM (“Wasteland”), and jittery vapor house (“Hush”), at the threshold of modes both familiar and foreign. Lyrically the record is equally evasive, rich with allusions and associative linguistics, surveying liquid notions of societal noise, ecological ruin, art world pretension, and the trials of daily life. But the lack of fixed meaning remains Mallinder’s main muse: “Music should draw you in; lyrics should make you think. Most interpretation is misinterpretation.” This is music of countdowns and comedowns, fleeting pleasures and opaque futures, observing the great decline while dancing on its ashes. Flux is deathless and forever; the rest, illusion: “I will be a constant figure / Flickering a moving picture / Turning in your head forever / Split apart but held together.”

Benge - Forms 6 - Works On Paper
With this release Benge continues his series of albums composed and recorded on a single synthesiser system The unit utilised here is a Serge Modular system composed of modules made in the early 1970s, the first generation "paper-face" editions. These were so named due to their distinctive livery, printed onto paper sheets that were then applied to the modules. These early devices are unique in their use of graphic symbols rather than written descriptions of the module's functions. Thus they have a somewhat oblique appearance and require an unusually steep learning curve to discover the system's many hidden functions The range of modules contained in the system used here can be configured as follows: 18 VCOs, 6 multimode filters, 18 envelope generators, multiple noise and random sources, 14 VCAs, 8 mixers, 4 phase shifters, two 8x3 sequencers, complex delay and stereo reverb units. There are also many voltage processors and logic modules On this record Benge set up elaborate sound generation and manipulation patches and then multi-tracked several passes of audio to create two highly abstract long-form pieces
