Who Waits For Love {Ongoing}
Chapter 1: Set In Stone
The ambiance of the city managed to penetrate through the thin walls of the almost quiet apartment. A thin trail of smoke rose up from the lit cigarette that lay in the ashtray. The sounds of the long forgotten television, stuck on the news channel, played in the background as a body lay on the worn out sofa. Thick, dark locs covered the arm rest, one hand spilling over the edge, loosely holding onto a pair of gold framed glasses. Soft snores filled the apartment, drowned out by the sudden shrill sound of a telephone. As the sounds got too loud to ignore, a groan left the mouth of the couch’s occupant, a lazy hand reached to shut off the cursed device.
“It’s—“ They checked the time on the small watch. The ticking sound was ever so quiet that one would have to strain their ears to hear it. “Three in the morning, what do you want?”
“I think we might have found a lead.”

Closing the closet door with a soft click, Uchiha Sasuke fixed the jacket of his suit as he gave himself a quick look over in the mirror. Grabbing his satchel and his car keys, he walked out of his room with everything he needed for the day. Stopping in the kitchen, he filled up his work tumbler with steaming hot coffee and grabbed a plain cinnamon bagel. The sound of his phone ringing filled the small bachelors apartment, making him roll his eyes at the familiar ringtone.
Slipping on his shoes and resting against the wall, Sasuke answered the phone and pressed it to his ear as he worked with both hands. “Good morning.”
“Someone’s awake very early; how uncharacteristic of you.” A woman’s voice rang in his ear. He could hear as she closed a microwave and got out some plates. “I’m usually the one who has to wake you up every morning.”
“Consider it a break for today. I have to be in the office earlier than planned.” He locked his apartment and made his way to the elevator. Whilst he waited, he switched on his bluetooth earphone.
“A break?” She laughed, “that’s a good one, Uchiha. Anyway, my father was wondering if you’d like to have dinner tonight with the rest of the family.”
“What time?”
“Don’t make excuses, I know what you’re like, Sasuke.” She chided before she answered his question.
“I wasn’t planning on doing anything, Miss Hyuga.” His voice dripped with slight sarcasm and playfulness. “I wouldn’t dare miss the dinners your father keeps inviting me to.”
“You know you’re part of the family now. He thinks of you as the son he never had.” She paused, “and it’s at eight tonight.”
“What about your cousin, technically he’s blood related but I barely see him at those dinners.” Sasuke opened his car door and placed his satchel on the passenger seat as he buckled his seatbelt.
“Neji has been busy abroad, ya’know, always traveling and taking care of the family business since I didn’t want to do it. Neither did Hanabi.” She licked the jam off of her finger as she put her sandwich together.
Picking up her plate, Hyuga Hinata sat at the table with her laptop open and a cup of steaming hot tea beside it. She placed her phone on speaker as she filled out some documents and listened to him drive.
“Are you working from home today?”
“Mhm, the shop is closed and I need to take inventory to figure out what we need to order. Lee is going to pick those things up for me at the warehouse.”
“Lucky you.” Sasuke grumbled as he listened to her eat and talk.
“I told you that we could have opened our own bakery when we were younger but you refused because it was too ‘mundane’ for you.” She stifled a snicker as she heard him groan at the reminder.
“Good on you for finding something you like.” He came to a red light and tapped his fingers against the steering wheel as he waited. “So, dinner at your father’s place tonight. Is that all you called to bother me about?”
“I’ll drop by your office for lunch. I have another idea that I need your opinion on.” Hinata fixed her glasses and brushed her bangs out of her face. “Don’t worry, it’s not something silly like ‘what color should I make the frosting this time?’.”
“You might not find me there at noon. I have a meeting then; some statistics, a few proposals and business modules — Itachi has been working me to the bone since we graduated.”
“I can tell since you sound old.” She laughed.
“I’ll talk to you later.” He interjected, his eyes narrowed at the car in front of him as he listened to her.
“I’m sorry.” She apologized, “it’s just fun teasing you.”
“You’ve been doing it for years.”
“And I’m not planning on stopping. How about you focus on driving and I’ll see you later?”
“Hm.”
They had been best friends since they were children. Their relationship confused many; he didn’t seem like the type to find solace in her presence and she was too shy for her own good. In all honesty, he didn’t like her at first either.
As children, they were placed into the same martial arts class. That’s where Sasuke had first laid eyes on the pale eyed girl. Her glasses were pushed against her face and she looked at everyone with tear filled eyes as she hid behind her father.
"Now listen carefully, Sasuke," Fugaku commanded, his gaze piercing into his son. "I expect nothing less than excellence from you. Your brother was at the top of his class, and I have the same expectations for you."
Sasuke nodded solemnly, absorbing his father's words. His gaze never left the timid girl who remained clinging to her father's pant leg.
Hinata scanned the room with shyness evident in her eyes. Unexpectedly, their gazes met, but Sasuke responded with a dismissive scoff, quickly averting his eyes.
Returning his focus to his father, Sasuke noticed him approaching and starting a conversation with the girl's father, before gesturing for him to join them.
"Allow me to present my son, Sasuke." Fugaku's introduction prompted the man in front of them to smile warmly.
With his eyes still trained on the girl in front of him, he felt his father tap his head slightly to make him bow in respect.
"And this is Hinata," the girl’s father introduced, gently coaxing her away from his leg and guiding her closer to Sasuke.
Hinata's eyes widened at their proximity, she retreated, seeking solace behind her father's protective presence.
As their martial arts class commenced, Sasuke found himself observing Hinata from the corner of his eye. She appeared nervous, her small frame almost trembling with uncertainty. While he possessed a competitive spirit and thirsted for power, he couldn't fathom why his father would pair him with someone who seemed incapable of keeping up.
The instructor demonstrated a series of intricate movements, and Sasuke executed them with precision and grace, his skills honed through years of dedicated training. He couldn't help but contrast his own prowess with Hinata's hesitancy.
During their lessons, she would constantly trip over her own feet and sit in a corner with envious eyes as she watched the other children train. Sasuke thought she wasn’t fit to be in the class. She was just too shy and soft! She always apologizes too and it annoyed him to no end.
From that day forth, whenever his older brother would pick him up from practice, he would tell him all about the quiet girl who everyone laughed at.
Until one day she had approached him and asked him for help. He had never spoken to her before, and the thing he noticed the most was her stutter. Perhaps he was a little blunt, he watched her cry when he told her to shut up because her stutter was annoying.
As punishment from their instructor, he was to be her sparring partner for the rest of the year and he hated that. During their first sparring test, he had to fight her and thought with confidence that he would obviously win.
Sasuke and Hinata faced off against each other. Determined to prove herself, Hinata stepped onto the mat with a focused expression. Sasuke, fueled by his competitive spirit, launched a series of swift and powerful strikes, anticipating an easy victory.
To his surprise, Hinata's reflexes sharpened, and she adeptly evaded his attacks, displaying an uncanny ability to predict his movements. With a sudden burst of speed, she countered, catching Sasuke off guard. The impact of her strike left him momentarily stunned.
As Sasuke regained his composure, he met Hinata's gaze. Instead of fear or submission, he saw determination and strength in her eyes. The tables had turned, and Hinata's resilience and growth had become undeniable. Despite his initial disdain, a newfound respect began to form within Sasuke's heart.
Everyday since then, he would find himself striking up a conversation, guiding her through their kata, and defending her from those who made fun of her for the same stutter he had gotten used to.
Sasuke didn’t know what happened but they became close.
They went to school together, they were put in the same class every single year as if someone was making sure that they stuck together. She would come over on the weekends if she was allowed to and he would accompany her everywhere. They were never seen apart.
No one would have thought that he used to despise the Hyūga girl with a passion when he was younger.
People often joked that they behaved as siblings. She was the younger sister he never had, and in return, he [as well as his brother] became her older brothers. The Uchiha family was a second home for Hinata just as the Hyūga family was a second home for Sasuke.
“You’re late today.” The receptionist looked up from her computer and offered him a smile.
“Bite me.” He mumbled and rolled his eyes.
“Gladly!” She called out as he ignored her.
Making his way to his designated floor with quick steps, Sasuke picked up some files and paid no attention to the people around him. Opening the office door, he was just in time for the meeting, and he couldn’t help but mumble under his breath a quick thanks to his best friend for making sure that he wasn’t extremely late.
———— ˳༄꠶ ————
“Someone seems extremely exhausted.” She pushed a container of food in front of him with a bottle of ginger ale. “What happened in that meeting?”
Sasuke thanked her silently and opened the container to be greeted by the smell of fresh stir fried rice with tomato slices on the side and triangle onigiri in one of the compartments. “The usual.” He mumbled and picked up the chopsticks she always paired with his meals. “Itachi and his snide remarks, boring lectures about statistics and the occasional call from my father to ask if the meeting is alright.”
“That’s not so bad.”
“You know Itachi and how he can get.” He ate his tomatoes happily and leaned back against his seat with a sigh. “Always up for teasing his precious little brother whenever he can get in some stupid remark that no one would understand but me.”
“Hm, I guess it can get a little bit annoying. Once again, you can come work for me instead!” She perked up and smiled. “The offer will always stay on the table.”
“Do I want to work for my best friend who teases me or my older brother who teases me?” He raised his eyebrow. “I’m still not quite sure what changed for you to be so confident in yourself to make fun of me.”
She shrugged, “maybe Itachi rubbed off on me as much as you did.”
“Another thing for me to curse him for.” Sasuke grumbled and rolled his eyes. “About that dinner later…”
“You’re not canceling on me now, are you? I’ve already told father that you will be there and he’s expecting you.” She nibbled on her croissant, watching him eat the food she prepared.
Even if he didn’t say it, Hinata knew that Sasuke preferred her food over any take out. In fact, since he discovered that she was interested in the culinary arts instead of martial arts, he had made it his business to try whatever she made. It was why he was the taste tester for her baked goods at her little shop. A taste tester for anything not sweet. He hated sweets.
“I was just wondering if I should bring some wine.” He mumbled. “Is your sister of age yet?”
“She’s not but I don’t think she would care very much for the drinking activities we will partake in. Hanabi may be nosy, but she could care less about that sort of thing.”
“I’ll bring some apple juice for the kid then.”
Hinata smiled behind her hand and shook her head. “If she heard you, she would be very upset.
“When has she ever not been upset at me? No matter what I do, she would complain about the ‘snot nosed pompous Uchiha’ who you’re friends with.” He finished his food and closed the container as he took a sip of his drink.
“I guess you do have a point.”
The two continued talking as Sasuke prepared himself to return to the office after his lunch break. Hinata offered to drop him off in the lobby but he declined; knowing that the receptionist would once again ask him if the pale eyed woman was his girlfriend.
“I’ll see you tonight?” She thanked him as he held open the door of her car.
“Hn.”
“Don’t be late.”
“Hn.”
“Tell Itachi I said ‘hello’.”
“No.”
“I know you will.” She started the vehicle, “work hard and don’t slack off or else he’d call me and gossip as if he’s a teenage girl.”
“Goodbye, Hinata.” He closed her door before she could continue to stall her leave any longer and watched as she backed out of her parking spot with defeated shoulders. Waving lazily, Sasuke prepared for another couple of long hours sitting in his office.

Since some of you need to be reminded of this
Vampires Don't Exist
True vampires of the order Vampira went extinct in 1897 when the last specimen of the type species V. dracula was hunted by European explorers. What are now commonly referred to as vampires are an example of convergent evolution and only distantly related.
True and extant vampires do share similarities such as nocturnal behavior, hematophagy, facultative symbiosis with canids, and weakness to sunlight so the confusion is understandable.
Even with the commonalities they are easy to tell apart. The dentition is distinct; Most Vampira specimens have straight fangs while contemporary examples are typically curved.
True vampires were typically solitary and required large territories such as villas, castles, and rural cemeteries. The stress of habitat fragmentation contributed to their extinction. Modern examples can thrive in much smaller or crowded habitat such as raves and munches.
