Brisbane Powerhouse’s Kate Gould to head up Adelaide Festival Centre
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/brisbane-powerhouses-kate-gould-to-head-up-adelaide-festival-centre/
Brisbane Powerhouse’s Kate Gould to head up Adelaide Festival Centre
The Brisbane Powerhouse has announced that its CEO and artistic director Kate Gould is departing for a new role as CEO of the Adelaide Festival Centre.
Gould, who has taken the Powerhouse to new heights in her four years at the helm, will move to Adelaide in mid-2025.
The new role will see Gould begin a five-year contract at the iconic Festival Centre in July, taking over from Douglas Gautier AM, who has held the role for 19 years.
Gould’s many achievements
Kate Gould is leaving the Brisbane Powerhouse on excellent terms, having transformed the much-loved arts venue into one of Australia’s major contemporary arts and entertainment precincts.
Brisbane Powerhouse chair Valmay Hill was effusive in her praise for Gould’s initiatives over the past four years.
“On behalf of the Board, I congratulate Kate on the incredible impact she has made at Brisbane Powerhouse – both artistically and in reshaping the organisation,” Hill said.
“Under her leadership, she has secured significant funding to launch new festivals and events that have enriched Brisbane’s cultural landscape,” she said.
“She has introduced innovative year-round ventures, including Vertigo, Australia’s first vertical restaurant, suspended 17 metres above ground; Pleasuredome, a semi-permanent hand-crafted sailcloth venue; Powerhouse Store (P.S.), a maker-led retail space showcasing artisanal creations; and Dendy Powerhouse Outdoor Cinema, offering quality outdoor film experiences with hi-fi headsets.”

Lord Mayor praises Gould
Brisbane’s Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner also praised her achievements.
“I thank Kate for delivering on her dynamic vision for Brisbane Powerhouse, elevating it with landmark annual events and creating more to see and do for residents and visitors,” the Lord Mayor said.
Schrinner said Gould’s accomplishments included Night Feast, a festival of food and art that attracts 160,000 people; the reimagined Melt festival, which has become one of Australia’s premier celebrations of LGBTQIA+ arts and culture; and the introduction of the OHM festival, which showcases innovative music, light and performance.
“Brisbane Powerhouse is a vibrant precinct that now welcomes one million visitors and stages 1,500 performances annually, generating a significant cultural and economic impact for our city,” he said.
“Kate has been an outstanding leader in Queensland’s arts sector, propelling Brisbane Powerhouse to the forefront of Australia’s cultural scene.”
‘It has been a privilege’: Gould
Reflecting on her tenure, Kate Gould said: “It has been a privilege to lead Brisbane Powerhouse during this exciting period of growth.
“I am grateful to Brisbane City Council, the Board, and our exceptional team and partners, who have fearlessly embraced bold ideas and helped bring to life new festivals and events unlike anything the city has seen before,” she said.
Gould said that among many highlights, “seeing 5,500 naked bodies on the Story Bridge for Spencer Tunick’s installation at the inaugural citywide Melt Festival 2024 was unforgettable”.
“I will miss the sparkling river city,” she said.

Additional art for Under the Winter Moon, my contribution to the Frozen x Beauty & the Beast 2024 Yuletide Gift Exchange. Created for @true--north.
Christmas can be a wonderful time of celebration and giving, but sometimes gifts aren’t the only things that come unwrapped. Will Elsa and Anna get their hearts’ true Christmas wishes? Rated T, 3412 words.
Also thank you to @lovewillthaw-j. I used your amazing analysis of the Arendelle castle library extensively to plan the above illustration.

Zutara Week 2024 - Festive
This year I partnered up with the legendary @demaparbat-hp for this prompt response. Please check out her corresponding post and artwork! I am literally still so shaken by the incredible artwork that goes along with this story! No, seriously, this is absolutely incredible! Give her praise!
Y'all, this is the fluffiest thing I've ever written. Enjoy!
-------
Zuko decided to make the next Winter Solstice memorable after his and Katara's first one together lacked a certain magic.
On their first Winter Solstice together, Zuko shared a simple dinner with Katara in the Palace. Foods from her home mingled with spiced Fire Nation dishes, filling the table with a plethora of vibrant colors. He tried his best to find all of the best ingredients, and while she smiled, there was a vacancy in her eyes when she looked across the spread. Just the two of them. She assured him that she loved the thought and the food was exquisite. Perhaps too much so, he added in his head. It was made with perfection, not love. The kitchens were incapable of adding that ingredient. He knew what was missing. He knew what he couldn’t fix that night. Everyone had been so busy in that first year that there wasn’t a chance for friends. He was the Fire Lord and was busy, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t take some time away from the world’s affairs for someone who gave him his world. Even as the meal ended and they retired for the night, he began plotting. It wouldn’t be easy. No, compared to his normal responsibilities, the plan that rapidly formed that night was doomed without the most meticulous preparations. Luckily he knew just the person to contact and swore on his honor that he’d write a letter to Sokka the next morning. Early? Yes. Without reason? No. Even starting this soon he knew it was likely that everything may only line up more than a year from now. He hoped Katara was patient. He’d try.

@beatingheart-bride
"That would be such an honor."
As they left the theater arm in arm, Susannah elaborated a little further on her feelings regarding the idea, saying, "I don't see people wearing my work very often, but when I do, when I see them wearing my hats and bonnets out in town...there's nothing like it. It gives me a-a sorta...a feeling of pride, I guess you'd say. A job well done."
Of course, no one knew the name of the maker of the hat; all who made them were anonymous. Those who shopped and bought from the haberdashery usually just cheerfully told their friends, "Oh, I got it from Mickey's!" giving no thought to the people who really made them. But even so, when Susannah saw her work out in the park, people donning her top hats and sunhats and the like, and to see others compliment her handiwork without knowing it was hers...it put a little smile on her face.
"I know they don't know it's mine, but...it still feels good, knowing they're so happy with it," she smiled softly, cheeks pink as exited back out onto the street. "So to think about people seeing my work on a stage night after night and loving it, admiring it, actually knowing that it's mine? It...it would be nothing short of an honor to me."

Bernadette Peters coming to Brisbane’s Melt Festival
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/bernadette-peters-announced-for-brisbanes-melt-festival/
Bernadette Peters coming to Brisbane’s Melt Festival
Brisbane’s Melt Festival has unveiled the first artist for its 2025 program – and it’s a big one.
The annual LGBTQIA+ arts and culture festival has announced it will feature an exclusive performance by none other than Bernadette Peters!
var googletag = googletag || ; googletag.cmd = googletag.cmd || []; googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.defineSlot('/20603802/postads', [300, 250], 'div-gpt-ad-1522809410699-0').addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.pubads().enableSingleRequest(); googletag.enableServices(); );
googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1522809410699-0'); );
It will be the US actress and singer’s first Australian show in over a decade.
The concert will be exclusive to Brisbane – the only show of her upcoming Australian trip.
The event will be held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on Friday, 24 October as part of the Melt Festival.
In a special local touch, Peters will be supported by Camerata – Queensland’s critically acclaimed chamber orchestra.
Bernadette Peters’ incredible career
Bernadette Peters is well-known to any serious lover of music or theatre – but it’s worth recapping what a landmark she is in the entertainment world.
Renowned for playing The Witch in the original Broadway production of Into the Woods and Dot in Sunday in the Park with George, Peters is synonymous with the Great White Way.
She’s also had an enviable career in film and television.
Her on-screen work includes film appearances in The Jerk, Pennies from Heaven and Annie, as well as television roles in Mozart in the Jungle, The Good Fight and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.
Her queer icon status led to her appearance in the Will & Grace episode ‘Whatever Happened to Baby Gin?’, where she played Karen Walker’s fabulously entertaining, sharp-tongued sister.
She’s also released six solo albums and numerous singles over a career spanning more than six decades.
During the course of her incredible career, she’s worked with the likes of Woody Allen, Cher, Carol Burnett, Stephen Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Clint Eastwood, Judy Davis, Hugh Jackman, Peter Allen and many more stage and screen luminaries.
Along the way, she’s picked up three Tony Awards (including the honorary Isabelle Stevenson Award), three Drama Desk Awards and a Golden Globe.
var googletag = googletag || ; googletag.cmd = googletag.cmd || []; googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.defineSlot('/20603802/300x250_AFTERPOST', [300, 250], 'div-gpt-ad-1551357911742-0').addService(googletag.pubads()); googletag.pubads().enableSingleRequest(); googletag.enableServices(); );
googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1551357911742-0'); );
She has also been nominated for three Primetime Emmys and four Grammys.

21st century diva
Despite being a 20th century icon, Bernadette Peters has managed to stay relevant in the 21st century, in a way that few ‘old school’ stars have.
In recent weeks, she’s appeared on both The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel Live!
Peters is currently performing on Broadway, in the critically acclaimed production Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends.
The Broadway season follows its acclaimed runs in the West End and Los Angeles.

Get ready to Melt
As an icon of the LGBTQIA+ community and tireless advocate and fundraiser for HIV/AIDS charities, Peters is a perfect fit for the Melt Festival.
Melt is one of Australia’s largest LGBTQIA+ arts festivals, celebrating queer culture through theatre, music, visual arts and performance.
Hosted annually in Brisbane, it brings together emerging and established artists from across the world to showcase diverse and groundbreaking work.
Full details of the 2025 Melt Festival will be announced in the coming days, while tickets to Bernadette Peters’ show will go on sale later this month.
For now, fans can sign up for exclusive pre-sale access, to ensure they don’t miss the opportunity to see Bernadette Peters live in Brisbane!
Bernadette Peters will perform at 7.30pm Friday, 24 October, 2025 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, as part of the 2025 Melt Festival. Visit www.melt.org.au to sign up for pre-sale access and for more information on the 2025 Melt Festival.
