11, 10, and 3 for your dragon age ocs?
Thank you for asking!
3. Opinion on blood magic? Rosslyn Cousland (my only non-mage OC) - she's seen the horrors blood magic can unleash, the harm it can do, and what it takes to stop a blood mage on the rampage. While her heritage and upbringing make her more tolerant of magic in general than most nobles, practicing blood magic is something she feels deserves the strictest punishment Melissa Hawke - doesn't touch the stuff. When she was younger not being a blood mage was a way she justified her family's freedom - the Chantry had no right to come after her or her sister because she wasn't a threat to society, unlike the maleficar the revered mother was always going on about. When she got to Kirkwall and life got more complicated, yes she saw the worst it could do, but being a mage herself she understands that it's just another tool and most of the time it's only wielded as an act of desperation. It's also a lot more nuanced than the Chantry likes to pretend, though that's not an opinion she goes shouting around the place. Maighread Trevelyan - Used blood magic once, when there was no other choice and she had no other way to defend herself. She hated the feeling of it, and it's a massive source of guilt, but she also hates the hypocrisy in the Chantry - the templars use blood magic for pylacteries, and there were treatises in the Circle library about its applications in healing if only it could be studied safely. Over her years with the Inquisition she gains an academic appreciation for it as a branch of magic and a source of knowledge, and while she considers the price too high to use again, part of her wonders whether she'd turn to it again if she were desperate enough.
10. Are they good horse riders? Rosslyn is a certified Horse Girl(TM). She learned to ride as part of her martial training and is extremely competent in the saddle, and before her life got derailed her plan was to start a stud to improve the Fereldan Forder breed. Melissa is... passable, if the horse isn't too excitable. She learned to ride on the farm's cob, which was used for all the heavy pulling and was very placid, but years in Kirkwall means there's not much need for horses and she's much more comfortable walking. Maighread spent most of her life in the Circle, so apart from a few very early lessons before her magic manifested, she didn't learn to ride until she joined the Inquisition. With all the travelling she learned pretty quickly, and in many cases she prefers horses to people because they're less complicated (she may also be a bit of a soft touch when it comes to her own mount). Because it was deemed necessary in case of ambush, Cullen and Cassandra made sure she was drilled in the basics of battle riding, and though she's not the best, she's pretty good at keeping her seat
11. What are their religious beliefs, if any? Rosslyn was raised with Chantry teachings, though the influence of her mother's people meant there were hints of older tales. After the attack on Highever, what little faith she had in the Maker dissolved and she turned to the Alamarri gods instead. It's not belief as such, but she keeps the rituals that show them respect, and heeds the signs they choose to give her when she needs guidance Melissa maybe believes that Andraste had good intentions, but growing up there was always a disconnect between what the revered mother preached and her own experiences so she became disillusioned very early on. She doesn't think much about religious beliefs beyond how Meredith twisted them to suit her paranoia, but then she thinks the Qun is just as bad. Maighread's perspective is that if the Maker is real, he's not worth bothering with, either because he's not powerful enough to stop bad things happening, or because he's a callous, sadistic prick. She understands that others gain comfort from their belief, but its all a bit distant, and she's allowed to be salty because religion only ever told her she was evil for existing and then put her on a pedestal when it became politically convenient.

Had some free time this Saturday thought get another review in. <3
We Move onto Episode 6 of S1 in this series re-watch.
1x06 'The Hawke'
Ep begins the ep with a Tim Test for Lucy. (It really started with a Cold open of her flipping their car with them both in it LOL) But I digress haha She’s passing his questions with flying colors. That is until he asks 'What is the most important part of this guys file?' She gets it wrong and he of course corrects her with the start of his lesson.
Tim is questioning her skills to out think a crook. Not only that but to think like one does. The goal is to see if they can’t find out where he hides his contraband. Lucy naturally is ready to prove him wrong. To get in there and find what they need. To win this current lesson of his. Tim always with the hard ass reply to her. Telling her she’s not used to being in such a mindset. That if she wants to be a good cop she’s gonna have to think like a crook a little. Or as he put it 'Outlaw'
Ahh Protective Tim. My fav. Smacking this perv in the back of the head for making lewd comments toward Lucy. Telling him to learn some respect. Doesn't even let him look at her after that. He's trying to teach her a lesson not have this guy ogle Lucy in the process. I do enjoy Tim teaching her the D.E.A.R search method. A tactic used to help find where repeat offenders hide things. Fun to watch how he uncovers everything with each letter. She’s dutifully writing it all down. She’s eager to soak it all up until they get to ‘R’ LOL
Poor Lucy at the mercy of being a rookie. Also at the mercy of this current lesson of his. She’s so repulsed at the idea of having to do the ’R’ of this method. Did her best to try and get out of it. Tim just gives her his patented hard ass look and she knows she is defeated on this one. Walks away resigned with her gloves.
Her face when she walks back out after doing ‘Repulsive’ if looks could kill....She’s so damn mad at him for making her do that. Not only making her do that but he found the stash while she did. Tells him like it is per usual, but he’s too damn giddy to let it get to him. Acting like he's done nothing wrong to her with his 'What?'
He proceeds to soak up this moment some more. That smile on his face. God he genuinely loves getting under her skin so much. Teaching her a lesson while enjoying himself on the side. Look at that man’s face LOL he is legit so happy she’s disgruntled about this. This is so much fun for him. You are enjoying yourself way too much Timothy haha
No gif for the scene with them chasing Hawke in their shop sadly, its too bad it's a good one. It sets up their final scene of the ep. Tim/Lucy are chasing Hawke with the others. Talking about how they’re gonna find him and take him down without his son being harmed. Tim mentions how they’ve turned all the lights green. Which means they’re funneling him toward them and he won't realize it till its too late. She calls him the D.E.A.R method incarnate. Which I’m sure Tim is taking as a compliment.
Lucy tells him he must have a tactic for everything. He replies to her "Yeah probably' She then grills him on how he would handled being robbed at gunpoint. He tells her he has a fake empty wallet. He would drop that first before pulling his piece. She’s intrigued and asks where he keeps his actual money and cards. Tells her in a money clip behind his belt. Lucy is bemused and calls him weird haha They’re so cute.
Mini moment here. Lucy trying to help Tim’s wounded pride (or so he thinks) with a sweet touch and a look. He’s clearly embarrassed Hawke took him and John down so quickly. We find out later why she really did this. To gain access to his money clip. But I shall take the touch/look none the less. haha
Best part of the episode right here. Once again Lucy returning fire on Tim in the best way possible. By taking what Tim taught her and frankly tortured her with earlier to prank him back. Now it’s her turn to be enjoying herself too much. The amount of enjoyment she's getting out of teasing him is glorious.
He's genuinely so confused at her response. Wondering why she is telling him about him cleaning the dishes. It cracks me up so hard. He's not sure where she is going with his and he's annoyed she's one taken his clip and two is taunting him. Then she delivers the one two sucker punch of a line to him, and it all becomes clear.
Throwing back his words at him once again. She is so damn proud of herself when she tells him might want to ‘glove up.’ The sass and fire she throws his way is unreal. Regardless of where Tim is emotionally still with Isabel. This is a work flirt on top of getting him back that just happened right here. Eric/Melissa's chemistry on full display.
Tim can’t decide if he’s angry or just really damn impressed with her. I’m leaning more towards impressed. She took what he taught her and got back at him for having her ‘glove up.’ This is brilliant and it’s written all over his face. He’s more impressed she pulled this off than anything else. She’s the clear winner of the day and all he can do is smile and concede that she got she got him real good. Adorable. I love them so much.
~~~~
Side notes I do love Tim questioning when Nolan does anything remotely cool like hang out with Hawke LOL Tim seems slightly underwhelmed with him at all times haha makes me laugh. Sorry John hahaha
I love any and all Capt. Zoe scenes. I forget how much I love her every time I watch her scenes. They gave her a rich background and solid important scenes whenever she graced our scenes.
Cracked me up Talia just walking in and pepper spraying Hawke while he tries to school Tim and Nolan. Lucy backing her up with her taser after Hawke took both down LOL Got too cocky and the girls made him pay ha
"The Hawke"
Original Air Date: November 27th, 2018
Written By: Frederick Kotto
Directed By: Timothy Busfield
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If you are reading this, that means for some reason, you are sticking around with me and all of my happy thoughts and I cannot thank you all enough!
Happy Sunday and Happy Fathers Day to those who celebrate!!
Onto the next one shall we…
We have a new cold open, it is short and sweet with our favorite Rookie and T.O duo…Chen and Bradford! I think this is the shortest]cold open we’ve seen so far, and I think the first one between Tim and Lucy as well!
We are introduced to a random, yet important for this episode, character, The Hawke, who trained John Nolan as a recruit! Hawke is a police officer as well, as his current position is a trainer in the police academy; He seems to be jealous of John, or at least of Johns position, which is one of a soon to be patrol officer. Mayne Hawke is done with the academy life and is envious of what John has.
Can you say fishy, which is the vibes I am getting from “The Hawke”.. what type of person he is, or even yet, what type of cop is he?
After a morning roll call room, Tim and Lucy get the leftover jobs that were incomplete from night shift and have been sequestered to serving and completing a search warrant. They head over to the apartment complex and Tim immediately starts giving Lucy lessons in how to properly serve a search warrant and succeed at one as well. This is definitely not the first one Tim has done and it won’t be the last either, but with that being said, Tim is doubting Lucy’s skills, which is understandable as he has never seen her properly serve a warrant and search a house. This deadbeat of a guy hits on Lucy as she is searching his apartment, Tim does what any respectable guy would do and puts this kid in his place and comes to Lucy’s defense because she’s oblivious to it as she is in the zone.
We are introduced by Tim to the D.E.A.R method: Deception, Elusive, Access and Repulsive. Lucy is trying to take down everything Tim is telling her as she pulls out her pad and pen to jot everything down until she basically gets told she has to continue her search in the repulsive category "You might want to glove up” he tells her as she storms off into the bathroom (Best belie we will circle back around to that later”.
A pissed off Lucy comes out of the bathroom to see Tim at the table with the stash of the stolen objects that he sent Lucy to go find, anger arises even more for Lucy yet a bit of gloating surfaces for Tim. He knew what he was doing the entire time, and where the stash was hidden but he couldn’t let Lucy off the hook that easily. Tim’s “Tim Tests” are becoming a normal occurrence for Lucy, what else can Tim throw at Lucy?!
Jackson and Angela respond to 9-1-1 call of a woman who called the police the previous night. She called because of her unruly, drunk, soon to be ex-husband who was at the brink of assaulting her, and she reveals that said soon to be ex-husband is the character we were introduced to earlier in the episode, Jeremy Hawke. Things seem to be getting a little dicey for this guy, how do they proceed with going about arresting a fellow police officer?
Jackson and Angela’s side storyline seems insignificant this episode compared to what everyone else is dealing with. What we have seen so far in the past 6 episodes, there is always more than 1 storyline, conflict in every episode of The Rookie, so even thought Hawke is the main arc of this episode, there has to be a secondary storyline, which is for Angela and Jackson. They end up dealing with what they think is a drive-by shooting at first, then a suicide call, but Jackson figures out it was a shooting out of anger: an angry so over his dad not accepting him as gay and allowing him to be with his boyfriend. “Look, we can’t choose our fathers but we can choose how we let them shape us”. The quotes that this show gives us have been some top tier stuff, let me tell ya!
Grey calls into John and Talia, to speak to John to see if he can figure out how to proceed with dealing with Hawke. We are reminded by the John from the very first episode and how he reacts to situations like the one he is currently in. He is quick to think on his feet and he knows how to relate to others, and especially those of his age as well. The Hawke situation escalates quickly for everyone and it becomes one of questioning. How do they go about proceeding with him when he is a police officer.
It is obvious he’s friends, or at least acquaintances, with some of the other officers at Mid-Wilshire. So not only do they have to figure out a way to go about arresting another officer, but now a friend as well. I don’t think the decision is that hard because we find out that he is quickly turning into a criminal “Anything you can do, I can do better” comes to mind; how do you outsmart a cop, or a quick approaching crooked cop at that as well?
I think that we have seen Captain Anderson in this episode the most. We still don’t know very much about her at all, but her time will be coming, I am sure of it!
I like watching Jackson and Angela work together, you can already tell the type of relationship and friendship that is going to form between the two of them. John and Talia are a steak difference from everyone else and it has been an odd number of weeks/months into their training days, but I still don’t find them meshing well together, there is something missing in that professional relationship.
Chen and Bradford find Hawke’s truck sans a Hawke. Tim confirmed my suspicions, Hawke is quickly becoming a criminal cop and is now going to do anything to avoid an arrest which includes outrunning everyone looking for him by any means necessary. John saw all the signs wrong with Hawke when he met him out the previous night, but did nothing about them. He just chalked it up to Hawke having a “bad night” whereas I think that if he had a bit more training, he would have acted on his instincts and at least maybe reported Hawke to someone higher up, things could have turned out a little bit differently. Talia knows that Hawke is trying to outsmart everyone just like Tim knew as well. Hawke is taking no chances in getting caught. It’s a no holds bar in getting Hawke and arresting him, everyone is on his tail and John and Talia announce that he has kidnapped his son and has put him at risk, which just made this situation that much more dire.
Tim devises a plan to get Hawke to fall right into their trap. Lucy thinks it won’t work but Tim knows it will because he thinks that he is going to outsmart Hawke but yet again Hawke has the upper hand because he still has his police radio on him, much to everyones frustration. They all realize that Hawke is going to one of the most public places he could go to: the mall. We are always reminded that John is to be the big hero of these episodes as he starts to confront Hawke in the mall. Hawke lays it all out for John; he is angry, desperate, and humiliated. He thought he had no other choice but to act the way he did. He has nowhere else to go and he is at a loss but that still doesn’t stop him from continuing to run but this time he leaves his son. He doesn’t need to be brought down with him.
The gang put their heads together to figure out just what Hawke is going to do next. What is his next move, his next target? Is he really going to be able to outsmart this group of cops? Turns out everyone knew exactly what he was going to do next, which is stay exactly where he is at the mall, even though he hopes that they vacate and search for him elsewhere. Its a bit of a renaissance that John and Tim are the ones to corner Hawke as he was the one who trained both of them: “one in the field and one in the classroom” but Hawke is not going down without a fight and as punches are thrown, and mainly at Tim and John, it is Talia with a little help from Lucy that gets the job done and finally arrest Hawke.
We end the episode on the highest note, a very memorable #Chenford scene..
The episode ends with Tim hanging out in a bar, answering a phone call. It is Lucy on the other end of the call, and I think that this is the first time that we hear Tim call her by her first name and not, “boot” or “Chen”. This is also one of the first times that we see them interacting outside of work. It’s a small moment, but it is one none the less; it’s a scene that solidifies that maybe there is a friendship forming between Lucy and Tim, albeit a very very small one, practically noting, but baby steps. Lucy reveals to Tim that she swiped his money clip from him when he was “getting his ass beat”- but hey he wanted her to act and think like a criminal so…
Before Tim hangs up, Lucy ever so reminds him that he might want to "glove up" before he finds a way to pay for his tab, most likely by washing dishes. I love this for Lucy, not only is she giving Tim payback for how he treated her earlier in the search, but she is also showing and telling Tim that she is not standing/backing down to him. She can handle anything he throws at her, any "Tim Test" he decides to put her through and I love that for her. I already see an improvement from Episode 1 Lucy to Episode 6 Lucy, in demeanor, confidence and on patrol. Tim smirks as he hangs up the phone is nothing short of amazement and bewilderment. He is impressed to his core that Lucy swiped his money, and his little smirk proved it. It’s a moment where we see another crack in Tim’s hard exterior and it’s because of Lucy. I think it is safe to assume that as much as Tim should be mad at Lucy for swiping his “wallet”, he really can’t be. She just did exactly what he told her to do, and even better than he could’ve imagined. He is training her a little too well!
______________________________________________________________
Honorable Mention: The Cold Open; a classic.
Episode Peak: Captain Anderson, we are getting to see a bit more of her each episode!
Episode Pit: Jeremy Hawke
Quote of the Episode: “I think you were raised to analyze bad guys not be one and to be a great cop you’ve got to have a little outlaw in you” ~ Tim Bradford
Episode Rating: 6/10. Personally, this episode was just okay. It kind of felt like a filler episode, with really not much going on really in any storyline for any character. There was really no advancement in the storytelling for anybody this episode. One of the only positives that this episode gave us in one of out beloved and classic #Chenford scenes, but besides that, really just an okay episode. I mean they all can’t be a 10/10 and that’s okay!
___________________________________________________________
Another episode for the books! Can't wait to hear everyones thought and opinions on this one. Like I just said, I personally didnt think that was a WOW episode, much much more of a filler one, but to each their own! I want to thank you all again for coming along for the ride!
Until next time in, "Get in the Shop"...
I see u sometimes reblog stranger things stuff, was wondering if you can share some opinions on it? Any strong opinions on the mileven vs byler war
Lol I knew somehow when I put on my Stranger Things sweatshirt today that I would get this ask lol. Super fun question, thanks for asking! I love talking about any of my other fandoms. I've been pretty involved in the Stranger Things fandom from the jump, I liveblog every new season which you guys do not have to worry about for a while but you can totally backread my ST tags (melissa liveblogs st and melissa on stranger things) for my content or feel free to blacklist if you don't want to see it. I was also active in a few discords for Stranger Things and It, so if you were in any of those you might've seen me around. Met some great people, a few of which are still active on here @sorenserotonin and @milfnightshade loyal mutuals 🫡 who I always appreciate. I'll tag them in case they feel like returning to discussing Stranger Things with me like old times lol.
As for byler and mileven, I don't have super strong opinions. The two mutuals I tagged are both byler shippers (actually I forget if Deidre is, I'm pretty sure). EDIT: DEIDRE IS NOT! I personally have always been into mileven, they were the heart of the first season to me in a way that's really unmatched. The following seasons they have had their really moving moments, particularly for me the third season, but never the same spark as that first season. I do think they are endgame though, because that's just the path the show is on. I don't think the narrative makes sense without them, and wether that is effective writing is a whole separate post. That being said, I will always always never have beef with an lgbtq ship in any fandom, unless it's with a very unhealthy character and I think the ship is straight up abusive. Fandom is a largely queer space because we create the content we lack. That's important and should be respected regardless of ship wars (and I'm a person that gets into those lol). I have a dear friend who will ship anything as long as it's two women, even if they never interacted. I've never understood this. I want the writing to be strong and the relationship to be healthy. But I understand why she feels the way she feels and I'd never judge her, that's what fandom is for.
Some other Stranger Things opinions; I think the writing really has suffered since the first season. It is still a great show, but they struggle with consistency in their characters which is a huge issue for me. They also cave to fandom, which is another huge pet peeve of mine.
I also think Billy Hargrove is one of the most damaging popular characters in a long time, in terms of fandom and the impact on culture. I might just be biased however, I'm on some Billy fans blocklists.
This season was the best one by far since the first. I know that's a hot take, but I think it's true.
Max and Lucas were the only characters who were effectively developed and utilized this past season, which was a breath of fresh air for them to not waste Caleb McLaughlin again.
I do not like Jonathan Byers, but that being said the time for stancy has long come and gone and returning to it is insane.
Oh, final take, we've been giving the Duffers far too much credit for Robin as a character when a lot of it should go to fav nepotism baby Maya Hawke.
#hope that was what you were looking for anon#it was a fairly open ended question so idk#hi old friends :) no pressure i just haven't used tumblr this often in a while and it has me thinking of u guys#mike wheeler#eleven#mileven#billy hargrove#max mayfield#lucas sinclair#jonathan byers#stancy#robin buckley#maya hawke#caleb mclaughlin#byler#stranger things#melissa's asks#melissa on stranger things#melissa is an english major
@firesign-18 @cheeseofmysteriousorigin FINE I'LL JOIN BUT I'M KINDA BASIC NGL. I'm not sure how many of these count is rare ships but here goes nothing I guess!!!
HatsuMelissa because of that TUM where they both redesign Deku's hero outfit THEN proceed to canonically work together for the next 8 years to do the same thing. I love how they have contrasting ideals for how to design, how they challenged each other but both high respect each other's works (Mei saving Melissa's suit while endangering herself was SO CUTE). Melissa is born and bred in a super high class high tech sci fi island with the best education, while Mei looks like she grew up shoving random junk together in a garage. I love the potential of two polar opposite genius STEM girlies.
ShojiKoda BECAUSE OF KODA HAVING A FLASHBACK OF HIS MOM SAYING THAT HER HUSBAND DID THE SAME THING FOR HER??? HELLO??? WHY HAS NO ONE PICKED THIS UP??? How Koda summoned all his courage to protect and defend Shoji during the final war, and looking up to him is just so so sweet and I think Shoji would adore someone as kind and caring as Koda to be by his side T__T. ITS JUST ADORABLE OKAY
TsukaToshi from reading Vigilantes because this detective is one of the few people who witnesses firsthand how All Might and Toshinori changes and grows throughout the whole series. How they have secret lunch dates together, sharing personal and government secrets, exchanging souvenir gifts, all while being their happiest and natural real selves- not a superhero or a detective just friends. Additionally Toshi admitted that hearing Naomasa call to him felt more personal, further driving him to save them??? Always side-by-side but never quite having the time just yet to settle down, but after the war they could finally relax more and maybe be happy together??? Come ON that's some good old man yaoi material right there!!!
HawksTwice purely for angst, not necessarily romantic. Twice was the friendliest and happiest guy in the LoV. I really believe that Hawks started to develop feelings for the LoV with how close and free they are together. Him being especially close to Twice because he saw through his mask of being a "chill and free guy", instead being someone trapped in a cage. Hawks seeking comfort with someone so "weird" but also so openly caring. These two also being direct parallels to tgck, Ochako choosing to understand and save Himiko while Hawks chose to kill Twice because its all he knew at the time...oh the peak tragedy of what could have been.
Not really rarepairs, but old stuff I used to ship too since I'm a massive multishipper:
I was a big Todomomo fan because my younger bisexual heart found them so cute and pretty together. I saw a lot of myself in Momo when I was younger and Shoto believing in Momo made me so so giddy! I also liked Inatodo too because it was hilarious from just how much they contrasted each other.
Like firesign I was lowkey a kacchako stan too because of how they challenged each other. Their fight was genuinely life changing to me as a kid, and I still love it to this day. I do personally see Kats as homosexual tho, but him leaning in different ways is also cool to me.
Krbk being into each other but never properly dating, Rodydeku LDR after movie 3, Shoto having a crush on Izuku, Jiro being confused abt both Momo and Denki, and other little silly things like these are also really fun to me.
Miritama and Erasermic are also my comfort ships because...they're basically almost canon to me atp even if they technically aren't. Like, yeah these guys have loved each other for a long time now. They're always together in their biggest highs and lows. They make out, share an apartment , and think about each other all the time. It's developed, beautiful, and natural I love it.
The last ask you got made me curious! I obviously know (or at least have a decent sense of) the main MHA ships of yours from ISYH. But I want to know: what are your *rare* MHA ships? Who do you ship that you don't see many other people shipping?
Ooooh fun question!!
Writing it made me enjoy Nejire x Ochako quite a lot but there is virtually nothing out there pairing them - to be honest, in AUs where Himiko doesn’t exist (weep, howl, rage at the moon) I can get behind most people x Ochako (I just want my girl to be happy). For yuri Mina and her make heaps of sense (and much as it’s not a rare pair I’m also a bit of a kacchako stan 🫣).
Like you and I were discussing kinda liking Izuku x Kendo’s dynamic too, even if it’s barely in my fic. Momo x Kendo are also fun, but is that a proper rare pair? 🤔
My lil one shot loml (which is probably going to become more than a one shot) has Tsu x Kinori and they are cottagecore perfection 🥰
All Might x Inko is also kind of adorable!
…what about you??
#tsu x kinoko is smth i never thought of tho thats super cute#at first i thought u were talking abt Habuko her reptile friend lmao#the real ship is Ochako x Happiness#srsly i love tgck to bits but if himiko really is Dead dead then my babygirl needs love another way T__T#also being such a fervent aoyama stan is so real alkdjalkjl#hes such a silly little guy who deserves to be loved and comforted! The poor boy has gone thru so much just let him have his cheese alsdkfk#evelynpr bnha#bnha#mha#my hero academia#mei hatsume#melissa shield#mezo shoji#koji koda#naomasa tsukauchi#all might#yagi toshinori#hawks#jin bubaigawara#not sure how else to tag this uhh#miritama#erasermic#thats it lol im too lazy for All of that
ableism in mha
okay so i was scrolling and i came across this post and it helped me reorganize a lot of thoughts ive been thinking sense i first started mha. ive always been not a fan of izuku getting ofa in the first place as it felt to me as it almost completely erased any meaning of his backstory. it felt like such a plot armor/mary sue moment but in the end i got over it, assuming that most likely he would loose it at one point (i was right but we'll get to that later).
after he enters UA its almost as if his entire past is just like- not important?? i have plenty of hcs about his suppressed trauma and if you read into a lot of the situations he goes thru in the manga i can see it but is not blatantly said/expressed that he struggles with a complex from how he was treated as a child.
in the end mha becomes a manga mostly focused on some sort of version of not judging a person by their cover. The fact that a technically "villainous" quirk does not make someone a bad person.
now ofc this is totally true. no one should be overlooked or declined rights or decency because of the quirk they have. this lesson is a valid one.
the analogy i have made up in my head is this.
people who are born with "hero-like" or "useful" quirks, for example: bakugou, todoroki, hawks etc are beautiful people
(for the context of this metaphor ignore the fact that beauty is complex and is in the eye of the beholder just roll with me)
and then you have the people with "useless" or average quirks that are just average people
and then you have people like toga or shinsou with quirks that are seen as inherently dangerous. quirks that are unable to be used for good. those are the ugly people.
now obviously we shouldnt discriminate people just because society says they are ugly. there is no doubt in that and it is a tragedy that it happened and still happens.
however
20% of the population cannot even fall onto this scale. the quirkless. aka the disabled. they are not even seen as being worth a label on the scale because they are so disgusting and strange that no one wants to remember yhey exist.
i wouldnt be as upset by the lack of talk about quirkless people if izuku wasnt quirkless, if the first arc of mha wasnt izuku struggling with the fact that no one in the world cares about him but his mom and that not even her believes he can achieve anything because of his disability.
the whole set up was izuku wanted to be a hero DESPITE his disability. even though truly he thought it was impossible. he didnt work out, he didnt try and do anything to become a hero because he believed everyone was right. that what society had been telling him his whole life was true and he couldnt be a hero. but he wanted to despite that. that was the hook of mha. at least for me.
a bullied lonely boy with a disability achieves his dream despite society. despite being told at every turn that he couldnt do it. he said he can and he does.
but thats not what happened at all.
instead some pillar of all that is heroic drops down from the sky and magically cures his disability. and suddenly hes just a normal kid.
and suddenly we forget all about midoriya izuku and how hard it is to be quirkless. how much quirkless people struggle. how many of them must commit suicide because of yhe seeming completely normalized harassment of them in everyday life.
and i dont want to blame izuku for this because in the end hes a kid with trauma who just wants to fit in. its frankly quite obvious that he whole heartedly agrees with bakugou and everyone else from his past that yeah quirkless people are useless.
the way he treated Melissa in the movie broke my heart. he belittled her like it was second nature and while he obviously had no malicious feelings toward her because of her quirklessness he sees her as a second class citizen. hes surprised that she is able to achieve things despite her disability. that she manages to be happy in a world where she isnt "normal".
and again in the long run i dont truly blame izuku for feeling this way. like everyone he is a product of his environment.
again, however:
i do blame horikoshi
do we need to be nicer to people with villainous quirks: yes ofc
but your manga isnt about that. your manga is about someone whose seen as even less than that. you can address both issues.
having bakugou break down about izuku becoming quirkless was good but that was pretty much all we got.
and what happenes when izuku looses ofa?? he gives up on being a hero.
how the hell does that make sense
everyone in japan knows this boys name. he is considered a top hero. and he just drops off the face the hero scene?
hatsume exists??? izukus face has been in her boobs TWICE for gods sake. yaoyorozu can make things out of thin and are they had to wait 8 years.
izuku is too smart to not think of that.
it would take hatsume 3 days max.
and ignoring that whole point again hori is pushing the idea that bakugou and everyone from aldera were CORRECT. that yeah u were right to think the quirkless of useless cause like they cant do anything :3c
izuku has had NO growth this whole manga. all hes learned is how to hit things how to kick things and awww kacchan sad :(((.
nothing about believing in himself. nothing about how he can be a hero despite the odds. nothing even about the power of friendship helping him to overcome.
im just like wtf hori.
JL mission gone wrong
Wally: I want to go with auntie Diana, what's so hard for you to understand that old man.
Bruce: I need someone fast to get me out of there once I get the data we need. You are the fastest man alive, aren't you?
Wally: fast? Yes, clearly I am if I need hearing aids from breaking the sound barrier almost daily. *Put hands on Bruce shoulder* but I can't pick up your heavy ass and Mr. Kent and auntie can, have, and will carry you and just faster than regular people. Think about this Bruce.
Bruce, and his bisexual panic having ass: but you can carry my son just fine, and Harper, Rayner and Hawke, you should be fine and able to pick me up.
Wally, left eye twitching: let's break this down for you moron, you are built like a brick shit house, Dick and the other you listed are lighter than you, I can't pick you up because of I could you would have been thrown out that window six months ago. Do I need to draw this out for you or do you understand.
Bruce: I don't want to hear excuses, you're going with me. End of discussion.
Wally, sigh: whatever you say your highness, don't say I didn't warn you.
Hours later
Bruce: can't believe you couldn't pick me up let alone go through walls. Your name is Wally, this is sad.
Wally, done: and I can't believe you couldn't fit your fat ass through that vent, majority of your kids can. It's just pathetic if you ask me.
Bruce:
Wally:
Bruce: I'm still not firing you.
Wally: and I'm still gonna be difficult for your stupid decision. Now suck it up and start being a pathetic wet meow meow for Mr. Kent and auntie, I want to go home, watch real housewives of Star City with my hubby, and forget I was tied to you for an hour.
Bruce:
Bruce: there's a new episode?
Wally: yep, uncle Oliver fighting with Melissa and Melody this episode.
Bruce: ah, that's what last night text about twin bitches was about, okay yeah let's get out of here. *Active babygirl mode*
The other day, I came across a post by @thejakeformerlyknownasprince talking about, among other things, rarepairs in Animorphs shipping. And one that was mentioned was Melissa/Tobias, which somehow grabbed onto my brain and won't let go. So here's the concept I've come up with, because I have to do something with it and no way am I confident enough to try writing Melissa.
This would be a fic from Melissa's POV. Ideally in first person like the canon Animorphs books, but I'm not picky about it.
It's Rachel who introduces them, naturally. The boy looks vaguely familiar; Melissa never really paid attention to him, but was he always so... confident and alert? When she talks, he looks at her like she's got his whole attention. (For the purposes of this fic, Rachel and Tobias wouldn't be in a relationship. There may be a story there, but it's not this one.)
So the two start to hang out more and more, and gradually those hangouts become dates. Tobias' home life remains a complete mystery - any time she offers to walk him home, or have her dad pick him up for something, he seems so uncomfortable with the idea that she backs off, and sometimes he vanishes the next time she looks away. Sometimes he talks like he's got a brother or two, but one of them seems to be Jake's friend Marco, who's definitely an only child, so she must be misunderstanding something.
And Tobias does vanish, a lot, actually. They'll say goodbye and go their separate ways, and Melissa looks back and he's nowhere to be seen. Between that and the fact that he doesn't seem to have a phone number, she sometimes wonders if he's even real. (I'm picturing a phone conversation with Rachel where Melissa goes "be straight with me, is my boyfriend a ghost?")
And then they kiss, he completely disappears, and Melissa doesn't see him at all for over a week. When he does show up, he's blatantly worried, showing more emotion than he's ever displayed before. After frankly excessive checks to make sure they're totally alone, he tells her that he has to confess something, and she can't tell anybody, like no, anybody at all. (I want some kind of "what, are you a vampire?" here, but I don't think that was a significant thing in mainstream consciousness before Twilight in 2005.) And then, before her eyes, Tobias' body starts to change, compressing into itself, sprouting feathers...
(It is essential to my concept that, up to this point, the story be strictly slice-of-life, with no clear indication that any of the events of canon are happening. Tobias' disappearances could be parkour or camouflage or something, and the hawk that's often mentioned when he's not around might just be a coincidence. Melissa's parents are distant and stressed, but it could just as easily be because of their jobs or something. The canon Animorphs - including "Phillip" - recently started hanging out together, and sometimes they all go absent at the same time, but who knows what's going on in other people's heads? Any indication that they're suffering from escalating stress and dissociation should be within levels reasonably attributed to the middle-school experience. The Sharing probably shouldn't be mentioned more than passingly.)
And so Melissa hears his voice in her head, explaining that he met an alien who gave him morphing powers, and that some things went wrong and now the hawk is his base form, so he can't live a normal life. If pressed, he admits that it would be possible to make his human form his base again, but then he wouldn't be able to morph any more at all, and he "can't" do that but won't explain why not.
I think that's where the story should end, although I do have thoughts about a couple of story threads that would need at least an epilogue.
If I Ran The Zoo (or how I would plot out an Animorphs TV/streaming series if I had the time/ability/resources)
So this is something I've been kicking around in my head on-again, off-again for a couple years now, and I thought I'd put it out there, just for the lols (do people still say that?)
My thought process is for a 5 season arc, with each season being somewhere in the neighborhood of 13-15 episodes long, give or take. There would be a few changes with the order of things, and a few minor characters would play a bigger role. I'm not going to go episode by episode, but just sort of outline the big arcs for each season. I'm not in any way suggesting that this is the best way to do it, just that this is how I would do it.
Season 1
This season obviously would start the events of The Invasion and would primarily incorporate events/plot points from the first 10 books, including finding Ax in his crashed ship (though I would move that to either take place in the first episode, or in the second half of the two-part premiere), Tobais getting stuck in his hawk form (and getting an episode or two dedicated to him coming to terms with that), and introducing Erik and the Chee (Erik would be introduced as a friend of Marco's early in the season, with his identity as a Chee being revealed in the second half of the season).
The only major plot point from that run of the series I wouldn't put into play just yet is the reveal of Marco's mother as Visser One (although I would be very much establishing her through flashbacks, dreams, etc., so people will recognize her when Visser One does show up).
The main arc of the season would involve the Kandrona Ray and the events of The Stranger, with the team meeting the Ellimist and learning about the ray and its significance and plotting to take it down to try to end/expose the invasion. Erik and Ax tagteam providing info about the ray and its use, but it's the vision from the Ellimist that gives Rachel the final clue, again, as in the book, with that occuring at the end of the penultimate episode. The season finale is solely focused on devising and executing the plan to destroy the ray. The plan would succeed, which would prompt Visser One's return, revealing her host to be Marco's mother as the cliffhanger for the season.
Obviously, we would be exploring the kid's home lives more, with the relationship with their families and friends and the whole 'work-life balance' thing that comes with fighting a guerilla war against an alien invasion. Not to the point where they're having to fake illnesses to skip school every episode, but enough to show that it's putting a strain on their relationships. I would also explore Rachel's relationship with Melissa Chapman more and have Melissa be a bigger supporting character in the show. We'd also introduce Karen and Aftran in this season, revealing her to be a controller early on, but something that Cassie doesn't find out until the end of the season
Season 2
Season 2 would pick up a few weeks after season 1, as The Alien did with The Stranger. The kids learn that their hope that the invasion would reveal itself with the Kandrona ray destroyed were in vain and that Ax knew that. The premiere would largely follow the plot of that book, with the Animorphs attempting to integrate Ax into society and attempting to take the fight to Visser Three with the help of a Yeerk traitor, and Ax telling the others about the Law of Seerow's Kindness. Ax would get a lot of development this season, with the events of The Deception coming into play.
Tobias would help free the Hork-Bajir as in The Change and get his human form back as a morph, and the reveal that he is Elfangor's son would be included in this season as well (Obviously we're tapping into the Andalite Chronicles for flashbacks in at least one episode this season to help set that up).
Marco's main character arc would revolve around learning that his mother is Visser One, keeping it a secret, only to have the others find out later, thus incorporating The Predator and The Escape. Also Visser One is the big bad for the season, delving more into her conflict with Visser Three. The season would end with her supposed death following the Animorphs' thwarting of her plans
For Cassie, we cover the utilize adapted versions of The Departure and set up for The Sickness, with Karen/Aftran and Cassie perhaps getting trapped somewhere and forced to work together to get out of it, laying the groundwork for Aftran to be captured by Visser Three. The season finale would also center around the efforts to rescue Aftran.
Jake and Rachel will have arcs and roles to play in each of these stories as they each start to fall into their respective roles as leader and fighter, respectively. If they get their own arc, it would be around trying to save Tom specifically.
Additionally, Melissa is still around in her expanded role, but with a new friend: David, who would be introduced fairly early in the season in a recurring role (Melissa is also recurring at this point). She and David will have a B-plot where they become friends and are together when David finds the morphing cube, the discovery of which also occurs in the finale.
Season 3
Obviously, the primary source for the main arc of season 3 is the David Trilogy, with The Discovery in particular serving as the source for the season premiere. It plays out mostly the same, with the Animorphs learning that David and Melissa have the cube and plans to sell it online. They try to retrieve the cube before the two of them can attract the attention of the Yeerks, but ultimately fail, leading to the battle at David's house. They manage to get Melissa and David out of the house before they can be captured, and are forced to reveal themselves and tell them what's happening, essentially recruiting them into the Animorphs.
The events of the rest of the trilogy, with the threat to the UN summit or some similar event involving world leaders as a target that they have to keep the Yeerks from taking advantage of -- as well as with David and Melissa's reactions to being Animorphs -- would take up the majority of the plot this season. Obviously Melissa becoming an Animorph opens up some new potential for her arc, especially around her relationship with her dad and trying to come to terms with him being a controller (and the fact that Rachel has been keeping this a secret all along). She and David would have similar arcs around their parents being controllers, but while David ultimately turns against the Animorphs, Melissa does not (although David tries to convince her to). The season ends with the gang trapping David in a rat morph, as the books do.
One of Melissa's major character traits is her interest in technology, something she used to bond with her father over (working together to take things apart and then put them back together before be became a Controller to try to keep her safe) and I imagine her and Ax developing something of an awkward friendship as she tries to ask him about the morphing technology and other Andalite technology, with him being reluctant to share due to the Law of Seerow's Kindness. But, as he's grown closer with the Animorphs, he would eventually acquiesce and they would begin to bond. The two big relationships (Rachel and Tobias, and Cassie and Jake) also take major steps this season
The other major arc for the season involves other Andalites, incorporating The Arrival and The Other, with the reveal that other Andalites are on earth and some are there to help...or are they? The season would also end with Tobias getting captured by the Yeerks to begin the laying of the groundwork for the discovery that the Animorphs are not, in fact, Andalite bandits.
Season 4
The events of The Illusion and The Test would be adapted for the season premiere, including the introduction of the Yeerk resistance (led in this series by Karen/Aftran) and Tobias's capture and torture, with the main difference being that it is Tom (who has largely been a secondary or tertiary villain thus far) being the one who conducts the torture. During the interrogation, Tobias lets something slip that most of the controllers in the room don't pick up on, but Tom does, leading him to investigate and setting up for the finale, which would be largely and adaptation of The Diversion, with the race against time to save their families taking up the majority of the episode. Melissa is able to save her parents, her father proving to be an asset in the final season with his knowledge of how Yeerk technology works.
This season as a whole would focus on escalating the war between the Animorphs and the Yeerks. The stakes become higher, as are tensions following David's betrayal. Visser One returns, learning that Marco is one of the Animorphs and we incorporate the events of Visser, seeing the Animorphs rescue her.
Following Tobias's capture and torture, Rachel becomes more angry and vengeful, setting up for her arc over the final season (we've seen hints of her violent streak over the series up to this point, but it gets more intense this season).
Season 5
With their secret out, the Animorphs regroup in the Hork-Bajir valley and try to figure out their next move. The final arc of the series would play out largely how it does over the course of the final books, with the team recruiting more Animorphs to help them with their mission, and even trying to recruit government and military officials to aid in the fight. Tom gets the morphing cube, adding controllers with the ability to morph (other than the newly appointed Visser One) to the threat against the Animorphs. The final battle would be a multi-pronged attack, with the bombing of the Yeerk Pool being part of the final assault and not a separate battle.
Rachel gets aboard the blade ship and kills Tom before being killed herself. In an effort to make up for the harm he caused, Hedrick Chapman sacrifices himself to both ensure the Yeerk Pool bomb goes off and to save Melissa one final time (the pair of them were in charge of building/detonating it, along with Ax), and Jake orders the flushing of the Yeerk Pool on the the Pool ship, alienating Erek and the rest of the Chee going forward. All of this is in the penultimate episode.
The series finale follows the aftermath of the war in The Beginning, and, as the books did, the series would end with Jake, Tobias, and Marco (and probably Melissa) being recruited to help save Ax from an as-yet unknown threat.
And there you have it, my outline for how an Animorphs series could/should play out. As I said at the start, this is just my idea and others might have different thoughts about what order the arcs should go in and what significant changes (if any) would be made. Please be kind with any criticisms, and if you'd like to share your thoughts with me, my inbox is open. I also did a fancast for the series a few years ago if anyone's curious about who would play who
