A huge fish in the Mekong River thought to be extinct has been spotted three times in recent years. "The giant salmon carp is like a symbol of the Mekong region," said Chheana Chhut, a researcher at the Inland Fisheries Research and Development Institute in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The predatory fish can grow up to 4 feet in length, and has a conspicuous knob at the tip of its lower jaw. A striking patch of yellow surrounds its large eyes.

A huge fish in the Mekong River thought to be extinct has been spotted three times in recent years. “The giant salmon carp is like a symbol of the Mekong region,” said Chheana Chhut, a researcher at the Inland Fisheries Research and Development Institute in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The predatory fish can grow up to 4 feet in length, and has a conspicuous knob at the tip of its lower jaw. A striking patch of yellow surrounds its large eyes. With the last confirmed sighting in 2005, “this species of fish seems to have disappeared from the Mekong region for decades,” said Chheana, who is a co-author of a study published online Monday in the journal Biological Conservation that documents the recent sightings. Since 2017, biologists tracking migratory fish species in Cambodia have developed relationships with local fishing communities, asking them to alert any unusual sightings. That’s how the three giant salmon carp found in the Mekong River and a tributary in Cambodia between 2020 and 2023 came to the attention of researchers.

Day 14 Ho Chi Minh City
Our last port of call before Singapore was Ho Chi Minh City or Saigon. A very hot day too hot to explore, so just chilled out.
After another relaxing day at sea and 480nm (888kms) we arrived in a very hot Ho Chi Minh City our last port of call and an overnight stay. As I am frequent visitor to Ho Chi Minh City for work so decided to chill for the day and overnight just enjoy a day and night doing nothing in the city. Arriving in Saigon is a bit of a task for the crew as the transit from the South China Sea is about 50nm…

Six critically endangered Mekong giant catfish – one of the largest and rarest freshwater fish in the world – were caught and released recently in Cambodia, reviving hopes for the survival of the species. The underwater giants can grow up to 3m (10ft) long and weigh up to 300kg, as heavy as a grand piano. They now are only found in south-east Asia’s Mekong river but in the past inhabited the length of the 3,044 mile-long river, all the way from its outlet in Vietnam to its northern reaches in China’s Yunnan province. The species’ population has plummeted by 80% in recent decades due to rising pressures from overfishing, dams that block the migratory path the fish follow to spawn and other disruptions. Few of the millions of people who depend on the Mekong for their livelihoods have ever seen a giant catfish. To find six of the giants, which were caught and released within five days, is unprecedented.

A Personal Collection of Vietnam War Poems
Photo by Mike Warlick Here’s a collection of several short poems by a Brown Water Navy Lieutenant summarizing his year-long tour. Poetry is new to this website, so I’ve added a dedicated category to the main menu where you’ll find this post and others in the future. Worth a look! Paul F.
