Hinduism
Traditional Hindu women's dress consists mostly of the sari (saree) and the salwarkameez. The sari is a brilliantly coloured textile that is twisted and folded around the waist to cover the legs, with a matching underskirt or petticoat beneath it. A short, tight blouse (choli) with or without sleeves is worn with the sari ends draped over the shoulders, leaving the stomach naked. The salwar kameez is a long tunic (kameez) that partially conceals loose-fitting pants (salwar). The clothing code for Hindu ladies is simple. While saris are still popular in India, jeans and t-shirts are entirely acceptable in most regions, especially for Hindus living in Western culture. An Indian-style tunic coupled with Western bottoms, such as jeans or leggings, is a more common look these days. Most women would generally wear a sari or salwar kameez to a temple, however there are no official dress rules. The fundamental goal is to dress modestly, and your major fear if you wear Western apparel is that you will stand out. In this case, it is best to wear Western-style pants with an Indian-style top. Women love long skirts that are loose enough to allow them to sit cross-legged on the floor. Some ladies prefer to wear headscarves to church or on special occasions. Shoes should be easily detachable since they will be removed either outside the temple or right inside the entryway. The last rule is ahimsa: because of the Hindu believe in non-violence, it is frowned upon to wear animal skins or leather.

Make-Up & Accessories
The Bhindi's
The bhindi/bindi, which is mentioned in the oldest Sanskrit scriptures, is typically a crimson dot of make-up between the eyes on the forehead. The red dot, which was originally worn as a symbol of married ladies, became popular with young and unmarried women, who frequently changed the hue to match their dress for the day. Widowed ladies would occasionally wear a black dot. In Hinduism, the bindi is also known as the "third eye" and is said to ward against ill luck. The bindi can be supplemented or replaced by a jewelled stick-on dot for special events. The design, size, and significance of the bindi vary by country, although it is most widely used in India, Sri Lanka, and Nepal.

Bangles
Bangles, like bangles, were initially worn as a sign of a married lady but have now gained popularity among young and unmarried Hindu women. Bangles have been worn from the inception of the Hindu faith, and one of the earliest artefacts discovered in India was of a dancing female figurine wearing bangles. In Hindu mythology, all of the goddesses are pictured wearing bangles. Bangles might have simple bands or be ornately carved, and royalty was known to wear bangles encrusted with gems.

Henna Body Art
On important occasions, Hindu ladies customarily wear henna body painting (mehndi). Fine brushes or feathers are used to create the complex lines on the hands, arms, and feet with a specific paste. Henna is very popular during Hindu weddings. Because of its popularity, modernised henna is now available as markers, pencils, and pastes.

Jamie Locke - Mandala research
Jamie Locke is best known for her intricate hand-carved mandalas on wood, metal, glass and leather. A self-taught artist, Jamie is adept at taking a vision and turning it into reality. Her strength is in her hunger for creating, and exploring different methods and mediums, always bearing in mind that in the creative process the vision sometimes evolves into something completely unexpected. “For me, the process of creating a mandala is always one of inspired revelation, elemental surprise, and pure bliss.”
Tumblr media
Whether she is carving, drawing or painting, her desire is to always breathe positivity into the world and hopes that her creations will inspire, encourage and uplift. Jamie predominantly works creating one of a kind commission works. You can actually visit Jamie in her studio, a place called Red Barn Arts collective where she has been a resident artist and founding member since 2019. As a self-taught artist and maker in many mediums, Jamie discovered a love for creating mandalas in 2007, inspired by the traditional Indian art form of mehndi and mehndi designs. Over the years, her work has evolved from creating henna designs on skin and then ink on paper, to carving intricate designs onto wood, metal, glass and stone using a handheld rotary tool. What began as an exploration in 2007 turned into a full-time career in 2014. Over the last 7 years, Jamie’s work has found its place in homes all around the world. This continues to be a work that inspires & thrills her and it brings great joy to see carved. Her work can also be found around Indianapolis through a series of public art projects such as The Harmony Mural, partnering with The Department of Public Words, featuring my mandala designs along the Monon Trail and most recently, #IndyAngelWings, a collaborative mural project with artist Megan Jefferson and Indy Mural Fest.
