Consumer Guide / No.80 / model Kerry G with Mark Watkins.
MW : How did you get into modelling?
KG : I got into modelling quite by accident! My husband has an interest in photography and asked me to pose for him.
When he started up his own pages on photographic websites, the response was so positive and many of the comments asked who the model was, and whether she was available to work with others. It was a great morale booster as I never had the confidence to model before.
My husband encouraged me to open up my own page on PurplePort, a website where models and photographers find each other and arrange shoots, whether paid or in collaboration. The response has been fantastic with work pouring in.
MW : Why hook-up with PurplePort?
KG : PurplePort seemed a good choice for my portfolio as it’s professional looking ; also, it’s a well known website covering national & international models & photographers. It’s a paid site. The majority of members are serious about their photography.
MW : Why is it important to have a good body of work (aka portfolio), and what’s the process involved in selecting particular shots that best represent you as a “brand”?
KG : That’s a hard question to answer! Its been a learning process, which in truth I’m still trying to get right. I think it’s important to show versatility in looks, poses and style of photos so as to appeal to a whole range of photographers (who are looking for their own brand). My job is to create a photo that shows off not only their photographic skills, but also their own projecting of ideas and creativity.
MW : Describe your favourite picture of yourself…
KG : I have a few favourites! I think as models we are super critical of ourselves so sometimes it takes a few days to really like a photo - some just grow on you. However, when a photo is a great capture, and I’m happy with it straight away, I know I won’t go off it.
My favourite photo at the moment is this one where I’m sitting with my legs up on the table in black stockings (pictured above). It was one of the first ones my husband and I took together. It has a relaxed feel, and my legs look long - which they’re not!
MW : Run your last shoot past us…
KG : My last shoot was actually very easy as it was with my husband, Smileyman.
Before a shoot one discusses with the photographer what they are looking to achieve, in terms of outfits, atmosphere, poses etc. We decided to do a contrast shoot. We wanted to combine elegance with shabby backgrounds so as to portray shabby chic as an underlining theme. I wore a beautiful long, blue evening dress, and some nice pieces of jewellery. My hair was cut into an elegant bob making the overall look quite classy.
We are doing up a property at the moment. We are lucky to have undecorated walls that reveal flaky plaster and distemper in some rooms, as well as concrete rendered walls in others.
We took over three hundred images in a variety of different settings i.e by a window, on a bed, a sofa and in front of a mirror, all hoping to capture THE shot. Sometimes you know instantly when something is working, but you try a lot of different poses, and sometimes they can be a bit off-the-wall but the photo just works.
Fortunately, the property is within a short drive so we completed that shoot round- trip in just a few hours. We could easily have gone on, and on, trying to get the exact shot we wanted, but our time was interrupted by the need to get home to pick up my son from school! There never seems enough time on a modelling day.
MW : What role can a chaperone play, and would you recommend having one to new models?
KG : My husband does usually chaperone me on shoots. He stays very much in the background, but is useful help to any photographers I’m working with. He assists to move props, furniture etc. He tells me its hard work!
Also, he sometimes sees good angles (for photographs) from where he is sitting. so if a photographer is comfortable with input - he will give it. Otherwise, he is happy just to sit and watch and add to his own learning of photography.
Would I advise new models to have a chaperone, yes! why not? Although 99% of photographers on PurplePort (and other sites) are professional and lovely people, it only takes 1% to destroy the trust a model has built-up.
Also, if model is a nude model, then they are in more of a vulnerable position, so if a chaperone gives you that extra peace of mind then it can make you relax more while working.
For me, it’s nice to have somebody to chat and relax with pre and post-shoot on the drive either there, or back.
MW : Where would you like to take your modelling?
KG : Now that is a great question! I’m still in the whole learning process so I haven’t really thought about how to advance my modelling career in a commercial way.
Truthfully, I don’t know how to go about opening those doors. I would love to do magazines etc., but as yet, no offers have come my way - does it even happen like that?, we shall see!
I’m also lucky to not have to rely on modelling for an income, so in that way perhaps I’m less focused on having to achieve publication, but of course, I think any girl doing modelling always has an aspiration of being published.
In truth, I really love just modelling for people (being in front of the camera comes naturally) and I love seeing the finished images. Knowing that photographers are pleased with the pictures that we produce together is a good feeling, so even if nothing more comes of this hobby, I’m more than happy to continue this way.
MW : What TV shows do you never miss?
KG : I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m a soap fan so Coronation Street is one I never miss. I also enjoy The Chase quiz show, and I have a fascination with airplane disaster documentaries! However, as a 100% tv show I mustn’t miss, it would have to be any live Chelsea game. I’m a massive Chelsea fan, so any game being shown, I’m right there in front of the screen.
MW : What was the last film you saw?
KG : The last film I saw was Bohemian Rhapsody. I have always loved the music of Queen, and think Freddie Mercury was an incredible talent lost too early. I was really interested to watch the rise of the band from very humble university gigs to obviously that amazing Live Aid (1985) performance where Queen stole the show. Good film, and I would recommend it to others.
MW : Tell me about music…
KG : I enjoy a really varied range of music. When I was younger, I was into rap and r&b. I went on to listen to a lot of country stuff, and now because I go to Zumba twice a week, I’m into Spanish-style pop music! I also download a few classical pieces, and some older stuff like Simon and Garfunkel as well as Billy Joel, now and again. Depends on my mood as to what I listen to and at what time!!
MW : How does your garden grow?!
KG : I really don’t like gardening!
Luckily, we’ve just employed a gardener to help us out with ours. We live in a 16th century house which has a large courtyard at the back and various sections of garden surrounding the house. It’s become a little overgrown, and unkempt recently, so it’s so lovely to have someone come in and sort it out.
We are designing the courtyard area at the moment. It will have some hedges, and trees, and seating areas. All with a slightly Spanish feel using blue and white tiles, subtle lighting, and mostly white and green plants and flowers.
Hopefully, when it’s done, it will provide some good backdrops for photos too - once you start modelling, you look at everywhere as a potential venue!
MW : Tell me about your last holiday…
KG : My last holiday was a fantastic family holiday in Spain. I have in-laws who live in the Costa del Sol. Last year, as so many of the family were over visiting at the same time it was a real family, bonding break. So many barbecues and constant laughter. I really loved it. We usually like to squeeze in a holiday to Majorca if possible. Puerto Pollensa is our favourite destination, we love it there.
MW : Can you play a musical instrument, - what?
KG : No, I can’t play any musical instrument, but I can sing. I even have a claim to fame…a cover song I sang -  “Silly Games” (Janet Kay did the original in 1979).  My cover version was played on BBC Radio 2 a few times. Also, the track was played at David Lloyd leisure centres on their piped music system to members working out.
MW : Where can we find out more?
KG : Well, I haven’t set a website up yet, as I said I’m very new to modelling, but so far so good. If it continues, yes, setting up a website has to be something I will look to doing in the coming months.
So for now, if anybody wants to know more about me, make bookings, offer commercial or non-commercial work they can do so on PurplePort.
My profile name is Kpg.
