Ashes Review - A 'Bored Wife' Affair
A wealthy married woman's liaison with a rugged carpenter leads to dangerous consequences in Netflix movie "Ashes" (Kül).
⭐⭐ Rating: 1.5 out of 5. A wealthy woman who owns a boutique becomes obsessed with a draft manuscript titled “Ashes” (Kül) submitted to her husband’s publication. She starts visiting places mentioned in the book and encounters a carpenter who matches the description of the male protagonist, leading to an affair that culminates in a not very happy ending. I know, right? Even then, late season 2 Mustafa is much more animated than season 3-4 Mustafa! Honestly, in hindsight, watching Mehmet in Magnificent Century is kinda surreal, because it makes me want to ask my past self - is this your God? I can only attribute my early crush for this dude to my teenage lack of taste, because while Mehmet Günsür is fine af, Mustafa as a character has the charisma of a box of paper tissue. Hell, even the stylist is trying his darnest to make this attractive man as mid as possible. Now, having seen him in Love Likes Coincidences and the five minutes he was onscreen in Red Istanbul, I know Mehmet is in fact capable of being pretty charming. And of course Mustafa being charismatic would go a long way towards explaining his hype among janissaries, because otherwise we have a dude who doesn't go on campaign ever and is at best nice to them sometimes, yet they are willing to give their lives for him.
As for Mustafa's personality change - in season 3, he was just kinda bland, whiny and made stupid mistakes, but wasn't completely unbearable; honestly I was just there for Muslicali, natch. In the first episodes of season 4, he's clearly much more reasonable, but also surprisingly cynical and also kind of a jerk. The guy clearly has some trauma from Rumeysa's murder.
Mustafa
So I've been watching a new Turkish show with Mehmet Gunsur, who plays Mustafa and was kind of taken aback by how effortlessly charming he was in it, even though the character he plays is very much an asshole.
Considering how popular Mustafa is supposed to be among essentially everyone, I'm surprised at how rarely they actually allowed Mustafa to display any charm (IMO). But I guess they choose to represent him as the "silent brooding type" because it's a more "masculine" archetype and perhaps it would have been more popular at the time as stoicism and the capacity to hide your emotions were considered (and still kind of are) desirable traits in a man, especially as a leader.
But I also find it interesting because as a kid Mustafa was pretty exuberant and as he grew up he became more guarded and impassive, to conform to expectations but also probably because seeing his mother so sad all the time heavily impacted him and he hardened up
